George A. Romero’s Daughter Making A Zombie Drag Queen Film

by admin September 19, 2025

Tina Romero, the daughter of the late filmmaker and creator of the modern zombie, George A. Romero, is making her directorial debut with, appropriately enough, a movie all about an invasion of the undead. But Queens of the Dead shakes up the formula by having the zombies attack an NYC party featuring drag queen performers and their friends.

Queens of the Dead is a new horror comedy mixing together drag queens and zombies, and it’s set to hit theaters in October. The first look at this upcoming flick is out now, and the movie looks fun. It also looks like a movie that might greatly upset and confuse your conservative grandpa, who loves Fox News. Here’s the trailer:

The new movie stars the always excellent Katy O’Brian, Nina West, Jack Haven, and others, and looks to split its action between a group of clubgoers and drag queens stuck in a warehouse party, and the happenings at a hospital in New York City during the zombie uprising. After watching this trailer, I’m on board for this spin on the classic zombie movie. It’s also great to see Romero continuing her father’s legacy of making zombie movies that aren’t just gory and scary, but also filled with characters and ideas that feel extremely relevant. Romero’s iconic horror movie, Night of the Living Dead, essentially created modern-day zombies, or ghouls as he often called them, and laid out the basic framework most zombie movies follow: People stuck in a place fight back the dead while dealing with each other.

Here’s the official description for the film courtesy of IFC Films:

When a zombie apocalypse breaks out in Brooklyn on the night of a giant warehouse party, an eclectic group of drag queens, club kids, & frenemies must put aside their drama and use their unique skills to fight against the brain-thirsty, scrolling undead.

In 2025, with President Trump and other Republicans cracking down on LGBTQ people and anything they deem “different,” a movie about a horde of nasty zombies trying to destroy a safe place for drag queens and queer folk seems pretty dang perfect. I’d bet George would be proud of his daughter’s first theatrical film. Before this, she had done TV and smaller projects. I’m excited to check out Queens of the Dead when it arrives in theaters on October 24. Just in time for Halloween.

The Zombie on ‘Wednesday’ Was Inspired by Klaus Kinski and Frankenstein

by admin September 9, 2025

Wednesday actor Owen Painter recently sat down with Vulture to discuss the human element he brought to his performance as Slurp the zombie—and of course, what it was like eating the disembodied Professor Orloff (Christopher Lloyd)’s brain.

As Painter stated, “I was told to act out ‘You’ve been sitting for a thousand years and your voice box doesn’t work, and water’s going to fix that, so you should have a glass of water across the room, but some stuff is in your way.’ I had so much fun messing around with that and coming up with physical gags and jokes.”

Though Slurp looks like he stepped right out of 1985’s Return of the Living Dead, 1985’s Day of the Dead, or 1985’s House, Painter said his performance was largely influenced by classic depictions of Frankenstein, as well as cult-beloved German actor Klaus Kinski.

”Weirdly, I took a lot. It feels a little funny, because you point to a performance that’s so iconic, and then it’s just what you did. But the person in my mind the most was Klaus Kinski. He is a German actor who worked with Werner Herzog a bunch, and he’s a lunatic. He delivered some of the most gorgeous performances ever. I think he had so much energy in his body. It feels like there’s a current going through his limbs all the time. So I was trying to steal a little bit of that.”

Though Kinski never actually played Frankenstein or his monster, he did play similar roles in 1982’s Android and 1974’s The Lover of the Monster, as well as Nosferatu in 1979’s Nosferatu the Vampyre, Nosferatu a second time in 1988’s Vampire in Venice, and even Renfield in 1970’s Count Dracula.

In the article, Painter stated he channeled the actor in some creative ways. “Because of all of that wandering around and looking stupid, I came up with a sheet of funny jokes that I thought could be in the choreography, and then I had some sessions with the stunt team. They’re so knowledgeable about the athletics of everything. I would be able to bring creative ideas to them, and they would help me fine-tune the movements,” he said. “A lot of it is off the cuff in a really fun way. At one point, I showed up for a day and they just handed me the camera for POV footage. I’m holding a GoPro while I’m punching myself in the face. That was like the best day of work ever.”

As any actor worth their salt will tell you, a good scene partner will naturally elevate their performance, so it’s a bit heartbreaking to learn co-star Lloyd wasn’t actually there the day Slurp ate his character’s brains. “I was bullying a robot all day. Yeah, there was a prop head, but the mechanical bot was there and controlled by people on the crew. I don’t think a lot of it’s in the actual episode, but we had so much fun shoving the robot around. It’s almost kind of tragic. The wheels start squeaking and it feels like it’s a puppy dog.”

Though Lloyd’s head may have cost a fortune, it sounds like his brains did not. According to Painter, he was eating “some Jell-O blood mixture. It just tastes like sugar, kind of gnarly.”

Cillian Murphy Is Flattered Everyone Thought He Would Play an Emaciated Zombie in '28 Years Later'

Cillian Murphy Is Flattered Everyone Thought He Would Play an Emaciated Zombie in ’28 Years Later’

by admin September 8, 2025

As soon as the teaser trailer for 28 Years Later dropped, pretty much everyone and their mom assumed the skinny zombie seen struggling through flowers looked uncannily like Cillian Murphy’s Jim, the franchise’s original main character from director Danny Boyle and Alex Garland‘s 2002 28 Days Later. The internet sleuths swiftly discovered the likeness was pure serendipity, but the Oscar-winning actor now says he was touched that fans had assumed the emaciated undead wanderer was him.

In an interview with The Observer, Murphy said that, depsite being terminally offline himself, his son had made sure that he saw the skinny zombie everyone had assumed marked Jim’s grim return to the franchise.

“That’s great people think I look like a zombie cadaver,” Murphy said, dryly, as The Observer notes. “It’s very flattering.”

Shortly after Sony Pictures debunked the rumor that the zombie was Murphy, model and actor Angus Neill revealed that he was the Murphy look-alike under all the makeup. According to The Guardian, Neill was “talent spotted by Bolye, who was much struck by his distinctive looks.” Those looks are that Neill is tall and gaunt with sharp cheekbones—all good things to have for cinematic purposes.

“Danny told me he’d always had me in mind for the role,” Neill told The Guardian. “So we met up, hit it off, and I agreed to take part … On set he has an extraordinary ability to hypnotize you, and working with him on the film was a very, very intense experience.”

But hey, just because Murphy wasn’t the zombie everyone thought he was, he is still set to come back to the franchise as bicycle courier Jim in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which also stars Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell. Though Murphy has cautioned fans to temper their expectations for his part in the film, telling The Observer, he’s “only in it for a little bit” at the end of the movie. Still, Murphy did tease that his return is all in service of setting up an even bigger role in a future film.

“Everyone’s got to go and see the second one,” Murphy said. “I’m sure they will—it’s really, really good.”

In io9’s review for 28 Years Later, we said it was an incredibly tense, thoroughly fascinating zombie tale, writing, “While the ending isn’t as strong as the rest of the film, thankfully, this is the first film of a proposed trilogy, the second of which is out in January. We can’t wait to go back. There’s still so, so much to chew on.”

In the meantime, folks can look forward to streaming 28 Years Later when it arrives on Netflix on September 20. The sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, hits theaters January 16, 2026.
