Space Marine 2’s new Techmarine class, Helbrute mode and other update plans detailed in Year 2 video

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only more bloody downloadable content for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. Developers Saber Interactive are supposed to be working on Space Marine 3, but you wouldn’t know that from all the Stuff they’ve jammed into the previous game’s year 2 content schedule. There’s a major Anniversary patch due on 4th September, just in time for Silksong. Five more patches are coming over 2025 and 2026, plus nine DLC packs via season pass. The manufactorums are overflowing! Here’s a video to lay it all out.

The standout upcoming option is probably the new playable Techmarine class, who don’t get any screentime here. What is a Techmarine? A Space Marine with a lot of spanners where parts of their anatomy should be. They’re good at fixing stuff, though one suspects that, like most Sparse Maureens in Spice Margerine 2, they’ll spend the bulk of their time murdering things.

Techmarines aside, the free updates will add new enemies, bosses, weapons, progression mechanics, PvE stratagems, Eternal War arenas, and operations. Also, the chance to play a Chaos Helbrute, which looks like a berserking tractor with a comically small humanoid head. It’s like Bruce Banner got 90% of the way through Hulking out and ran out of rage. Still, let’s see if you’re still laughing when it stands on your toes in the forthcoming Helbrute Onslaught PvP mode.

As for those paid DLCs, there will be the usual shower of cosmetics. The new battle pass kicks off with the Black Templars Champion Pack, which includes a Champion skin for the Bulkwark class and a Power Sword skin. Then there’s the Imperial Fists Cosmetic Pack, which comprises 40 new cosmetics. Future packs will include cosmetics for the Raptors, Iron Hands and Carcharodons. I’m pretty sure they made some of those Space Marine chapters up. Iron Hands, lol, as if.

The only thing missing from Space Marine 2’s roadmap, to my mind, is a mutual crossover with the Helldivers 2 universe – a prospect once dangled by Arrowhead’s CEO, many moons ago. Let us make the commodified fascists fight! Let us see whose space-bigotry is burlier! Arrowhead have already partnered with the goose-stepping Helghast from Killzone. Add Warhammer 40,000’s Space Marines to the mix and you’re basically playing an unofficial PlanetSide 3. Seriously, there’s like, at least six battle passes worth of content here.

Cheetahs Feast and Sloths Snooze in These Stunning Wildlife Photographer of the Year Entries

Can you spot the second coyote in the image above? It may look like this amber-eyed pup is peering out from beneath his own tail, but that’s actually his sister’s. The Natural History Museum in London released this illusionary photo in a sneak peek of some of the best submissions for this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

The jaw-dropping images, selected from a record-breaking 60,636 entries, feature cheetahs, jellyfish, slime molds, and so much more. But let’s not forget the humans behind the lens. Some went to great lengths to get the perfect shot. For “A Tale of Two Coyotes,” California-based photographer Parham Pourahmad tracked this pair of siblings for hours across the rocky hillside of Bernal Heights Park, San Francisco, snapping a picture at the exact moment the sister’s black-tipped tail hung low over her brother’s face.

Judges will whittle the photos down to 100 for display in the museum’s exhibition, with the Grand Title, Young Grand Title, and category winners to be announced on October 14. Here are some of the most favored images so far. Scroll through to take a walk on the wild side without leaving your seat.

Speaking of doing anything to get the shot, Ralph Pace deserves some serious kudos for this one. The California-based underwater and environmental photographer slathered every inch of his exposed skin in petroleum jelly before swimming through this group—or “smack”—of Pacific sea nettle jellyfish in Monterey Bay.

This provided a layer of protection against the jellys’ sting. What feels like a bee sting to humans is deadly for the Pacific sea nettle jellyfish’s prey. This species hunts tiny drifting sea creatures by trailing its frilly, stinging-cell-laced tentacles, paralyzing any prey they touch.

To create “Inside the Pack,” wildlife photographer Amit Eshel, from Israel, endured temperatures as low as -31 degrees Fahrenheit (-35 degrees Celsius) on Ellesmere Island in Canada, The Guardian reports. Eshel laid down on the frozen tundra and allowed an Arctic wolf pack to creep close enough to smell his breath before snapping the photo.

“Through this photograph, I wanted to highlight how the behavior of these stunning animals challenges the negative reputation and “Wolf Hate” culture that often arises from misunderstanding, myths, and folklore stories passed down through generations,” Eshel wrote in an Instagram post.

French wildlife photographer Emmanuel Tardy waited patiently for the crowds to disperse along a roadside in El Tanque, Costa Rica, before taking this photo. Traffic slowed to a crawl as a brown-throated three-toed sloth lumbered across the road and then clung to a fencepost—the first tree-like thing it saw.

Sloths usually keep to the lush canopy of the jungle, but as deforestation increasingly fragments their habitat, more of them are forced to move around at ground level. The Costa Rican government is working with conservation groups to establish aerial bridges that will help sloths navigate the thinning treeline.

Each year, red deer stags gather in Bradgate Park to compete for females. Their rutting calls are deep and guttural, resonating across distances up to two miles. The frequency and intensity of their bellowing can indicate the stag’s size and strength, making it a critical part of the mating ritual.

The molds were growing on an actual tree in Slindon Wood, West Sussex, when they caught the eye of U.K.-based photographer Kutub Uddin. His photo shows their bulbous, blueberry-like reproductive parts perched atop stalks only a couple millimeters wide, next to a tiny yellow insect egg.

Elephants are increasingly foraging for food among Sri Lanka’s open trash dumps. About 20 elephants died over the course of eight years from consuming plastic waste at the dump in Ampara’s Pallakkadu village, the Associated Press reported in 2022.

Aptly named potter wasps build tiny, vase-shaped nests of clay and stock them with paralyzed prey to feed their young. When Kalita spotted this one, he wedged a door open to allow it to fly into the room, snapping a photo at the perfect time.

Isaac Szabo, an underwater photographer from Arkansas, specializes in documenting the freshwater ecosystems of North America. To snap this photo, he wrapped his feet around a downed tree in a Florida river, capturing the moment a female spawned in the crystal-clear waters.

Google Will Make All Android App Developers Verify Their Identity Starting Next Year

Android’s open nature set it apart from the iPhone as the era of touchscreen smartphones began nearly two decades ago. Little by little, Google has traded some of that openness for security, and its next security initiative could make the biggest concessions yet in the name of blocking bad apps.

Google has announced plans to begin verifying the identities of all Android app developers, and not just those publishing on the Play Store. Google intends to verify developer identities no matter where they offer their content, and apps without verification won’t work on most Android devices in the coming years.

Google used to do very little curation of the Play Store (or Android Market, if you go back far enough), but it has long sought to improve the platform’s reputation as being less secure than the Apple App Store. Years ago, you could publish actual exploits in the official store to gain root access on phones, but now there are multiple reviews and detection mechanisms to reduce the prevalence of malware and banned content. While the Play Store is still not perfect, Google claims apps sideloaded from outside its store are 50 times more likely to contain malware.

This, we are led to believe, is the impetus for Google’s new developer verification system. The company describes it like an “ID check at the airport.” Since requiring all Google Play app developers to verify their identities in 2023, it has seen a precipitous drop in malware and fraud. Bad actors in Google Play leveraged anonymity to distribute malicious apps, so it stands to reason that verifying app developers outside of Google Play could also enhance security.

However, making that happen outside of its app store will require Google to take a page from Apple’s playbook and flex its muscle in a way many Android users and developers could find intrusive. Google plans to create a streamlined Android Developer Console, which devs will use if they plan to distribute apps outside of the Play Store. After verifying their identities, developers will have to register the package name and signing keys of their apps. Google won’t check the content or functionality of the apps, though.

Google says that only apps with verified identities will be installable on certified Android devices, which is virtually every Android-based device—if it has Google services on it, it’s a certified device. If you have a non-Google build of Android on your phone, none of this applies. However, that’s a vanishingly small fraction of the Android ecosystem outside of China.

Google plans to begin testing this system with early access in October of this year. In March 2026, all developers will have access to the new console to get verified. In September 2026, Google plans to launch this feature in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. The next step is still hazy, but Google is targeting 2027 to expand the verification requirements globally.

A Seismic Shift

This plan comes at a major crossroads for Android. The ongoing Google Play antitrust case brought by Epic Games may finally force changes to Google Play in the coming months. Google lost its appeal of the verdict several weeks ago, and while it plans to appeal the case to the US Supreme Court, the company will have to begin altering its app distribution scheme, barring further legal maneuvering.

Among other things, the court has ordered that Google must distribute third-party app stores and allow Play Store content to be rehosted in other storefronts. Giving people more ways to get apps could increase choice, which is what Epic and other developers wanted. However, third-party sources won’t have the deep system integration of the Play Store, which means users will be sideloading these apps without Google’s layers of security.

It’s hard to say how much of a genuine security problem this is. On one hand, it makes sense Google would be concerned—most of the major malware threats to Android devices spread via third-party app repositories. However, enforcing an installation whitelist across almost all Android devices is heavy handed. This requires everyone making Android apps to satisfy Google’s requirements before virtually anyone will be able to install their apps, which could help Google retain control as the app market opens up. While the requirements may be minimal right now, there’s no guarantee they will stay that way.

The documentation currently available doesn’t explain what will happen if you try to install a non-verified app, nor how phones will check for verification status. Presumably, Google will distribute this whitelist in Play Services as the implementation date approaches. We’ve reached out for details on that front and will report if we hear anything.

Sony is taking steps to avoid another Concord

How did Sony slow-walk its way into a live service debacle that cost it over $200 million? A year after Concord launched, PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst explained what the company is doing to avoid releasing another expensive game that no one wants to play. “I don’t want teams to always play it safe, but I would like for us, when we fail, to fail early and cheaply,” he told the Financial Times. He promised more info sharing between studios and executives and said, “We have since put in place much more rigorous and more frequent testing in very many different ways. The advantage of every failure is that people now understand how necessary that [testing] is.”

What about Sony’s live-service plans moving forward? Hulst didn’t say the company is backing off its online multiplayer push, but he did hand-wave away prior commitments to launch nearly a dozen live-service projects by 2026. “The number is not so important,” he said. “What is important to me is having a diverse set of player experiences and a set of communities.” FairGame$, expected to be the next multiplayer game in Sony’s pipeline, recently lost its studio head after a bad internal review.

Ubisoft’s CEO has been summoned to appear in court

The French publisher faces a fresh lawsuit from the same victims who recently testified against former senior members of the company over sexual harassment allegations, including ex-chief creative officer Serge Hascoët. “This new case is being brought by the same plaintiffs, a union and four people, and is based on the same facts at those for which three former employees were tried and convicted this past June, following an investigation by the public prosecutor’s office,” Ubisoft executive vice president Cécile Russeil wrote in an email to staff on August 22.

CEO Yves Guillemot was subpoenaed to testify on October 1, though it’s unclear if the new litigation will be able to compel any new information to surface about the company’s workplace culture reckoning five years ago. “Ubisoft will continue to cooperate with the justice system in this matter, as it has done over the past five years in the review of the facts related to this case,” Russeil told VGC in a statement. Guillemot’s son was recently made co-CEO of a new business group within Ubisoft that oversees its most profitable franchises, including Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry.

The 2023 game has new content coming on the horizon. It takes place in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. The new story update will arrive before the end of 2025 and comes after a report that Ubisoft received funding from the Saudi government-backed Public Investment Fund, which has recently been flooding the games industry with cash.

Switch 2 games with only game key cards won’t be eligible for preservation in Japan’s National Diet Library

The archival body will only take “physical media that contains the content itself,” according to a new report from Famitsu, translated by Automaton. “Since a key card, on its own, does not qualify as content, it falls outside of our scope for collection and preservation,” a representative of the library said. While all first-party Nintendo games are contained on the physical Switch 2 carts, most third-party releases have opted for the game key card solution, meaning most will no longer be accessible if and when the servers eventually shut down sometime in the future.

Peak is finally Steam Deck verified

The summer Steam hit, which has already sold over 10 million copies, received a new update that fixes some bugs and gets the game working on Valve’s handheld. Hollow Knight is skyrocketing up the Steam charts

Silksong is out in less than two weeks, and everyone who never finished Hollow Knight is busy catching up. The game currently has over 35,000 concurrent players on Steam, nearly double its April 2022 peak. Not bad for an eight-year-old game that’s already sold over 15 million copies. If the sequel sells another 15 million, it will officially be a bigger franchise than Metroid.

Crypto Trader’s $2M social pressure campaign claims MEXC froze $3M for a year

A cryptocurrency trader launched a $2 million social media pressure campaign against MEXC, claiming that the digital asset exchange had frozen more than $3 million worth of his personal funds for no clear reason.

In July 2025, centralized cryptocurrency exchange (CEX) MEXC allegedly froze $3.1 million worth of personal funds without any terms of service violations, according to pseudonymous crypto trader the White Whale.

In response, the trader is launching a $2 million social media pressure campaign against MEXC, claiming that the exchange had requested a one-year review period before unfreezing the user’s funds.

“I’m Putting a $2M Bounty Up For Grabs (half can be claimed by YOU),” wrote the White Whale in a Sunday X post, adding:

“What kind of review takes 12 months – without a single update, document, or charge?”

Numerous other traders are affected by similar account freezes, the trader said, adding that the industry’s most successful participants are “punished for winning.”

In response to his account suspension, the trader launched a social media campaign, requesting that users mint a free non-fungible token (NFT) on the Base network, tag MEXC or its chief operating officer’s X account with the “#FreeTheWhiteWhale” tag, and change their profile pictures to the above image.

For completing these tasks, $1 million of the bounty will be equally divided among the first 20,000 NFT holders, awarding each holder $50 USDC (USDC), provided that MEXC releases the frozen funds.

Another $1 million worth of USDC will be allocated to “verified, carefully vetted charities,” with the trader promising onchain receipts after the donations.

The trader claimed to have previously completed the exchange’s Know Your Customer (KYC) verification process.

Cointelegraph was unable to verify the frozen account independently. Cointelegraph has approached MEXC for comment on the matter.

“White whale” claims to surpass MEXC market makers before $3 million freeze

The trader claimed that his funds were frozen due to being more profitable than the exchange’s crypto market makers, firms or individuals who provide liquidity by placing consistent buy and sell orders to ensure smooth trading.

“My only conceivable offense? I was too profitable,” wrote the pseudonymous trader, adding:

“I consistently beat their external market makers – the firms they quietly partner with to be the counterparty to trades (this is public record).”

Crypto market makers are among the most misunderstood participants of the digital asset market, often blamed by traders for deliberately manipulating cryptocurrency prices, despite a lack of evidence.

Still, research from Acheron Trading suggested that 78.5% of new crypto launches between April and June 2024 were conducted in a manner that disrupted fair price discovery, detrimentally affecting both end-users and the projects themselves.

Moreover, 69.9% of primary token listings were “Parasitic,” meaning that market makers were exploiting premarket conditions by creating artificial scarcity and sentiment around the token.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage will get fresh content later this year and it’ll be completely free

The Assassin’s Creed fanbase may be waiting for the first DLC for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but Ubisoft instead confirmed new content for its previous title, Assassin’s Creed Mirage. The studio announced on the official Assassin’s Creed X account that there will be a new story chapter and missions for protagonist Basim, who will venture into ninth-century alUla. More importantly, the DLC will be free.

According to the post, Ubisoft will bring gameplay improvements to both the new content and the base game, which revisits the franchise’s roots that emphasize open-world design and stealth combat. The announcement from Ubisoft comes after a Les Echos report earlier in the year said that new content for Assassin’s Creed Mirage was created thanks to a partnership between Ubisoft and Savvy Games Group, a gaming and esports company that has backing from the Saudi Arabian government.

The upcoming DLC sheds more light on what Stephane Boudon, one of the Ubisoft developers for Assassin’s Creed Mirage, teased during a Reddit AMA following the game’s release in October 2023. In the thread, Boudon said the game was designed “as a standalone experience without any DLC plan,” only adding that the team had “ideas of how we could extend the story of Basim.” Ubisoft didn’t specify exactly when the DLC would drop, only revealing that it would be “later this year.” In the meantime, Microsoft updated its included games for the Xbox Game Pass for August, which include Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

Hyperliquid Grabs 80% of Perp DEX Market in One Year, Analysts Say

Hyperliquid now controls roughly 80% of the decentralized perpetual futures market, highlighting its rapid dominance over competitors. However, this concentration raises concerns about sustainability and potential risks if trading volumes decline.

In just over a year, Hyperliquid has grown into the dominant player in decentralized perpetual futures, with Redstone estimating it controls about 80% of the market, trading volumes on par with big centralized exchanges, and fresh concerns over how long such concentrated activity can last.

At its peak, the platform processed as much as $30 billion in daily trades. That milestone, only a few decentralized exchanges have ever reached, despite being run by a lean team of just 11 people.

The platform, co-founded by Jeff Yan, a former Hudson River Trading quant and Harvard graduate, chose from the start to avoid venture capital, a decision that, combined with timing, gave Hyperliquid an opening it exploited faster than rivals.

At the start of 2024, decentralized exchange dYdX had roughly 30% of trading volume across decentralized exchanges. By the end of that year, its share had fallen to around 7%, while Hyperliquid’s share stabilized above 65%, per CoinGecko’s data.

Much of Hyperliquid’s growth seems tied to execution. One-click trading, zero gas fees, and sub-second order finalization make it feel closer to a centralized exchange than most DEXs, which has helped attract both retail and professional traders.

“Built by a lean, self-funded team that refused to accept VC investors’ money, they’ve proven that technical excellence and community-first economics can outcompete well-funded competitors.”

The platform runs on its own blockchain with HyperBFT, a consensus system designed to process hundreds of thousands of orders per second with settlement finality under a second. By focusing first on speed and reliability before expanding infrastructure, Hyperliquid appears to have earned credibility among traders faster than most peers.

Incentives and Revenue

The platform splits trading fees with its community. People who list new spot markets can keep up to half of the fees those trades generate. Developers who build user interfaces earn a share that can even exceed the protocol’s own cut. And those who launch perpetual markets share their fees with the investors who stake behind them.

This setup has pushed outside developers to build on the platform without needing grants or subsidies. They’ve already created tools to fill gaps like letting traders use one balance across different positions or borrow against their assets. The result is a growing ecosystem that competing decentralized exchanges haven’t been able to replicate.

DefiLlama data shows Hyperliquid ranks third among decentralized exchanges by weekly trading volume, generating over $12 billion, behind only PancakeSwap and Uniswap. That surge has helped Hyperliquid produce more than $1 billion in annualized revenue, translating to an estimated $102.4 million per employee.

As previously reported by crypto.news, that figure exceeds Tether at $93 million, OnlyFans at $37.6 million, Nvidia at $3.6 million, and Cursor at $3.3 million.

Risks ahead

A joint report from OAK Research and GL Capital notes that despite Hyperliquid’s rapid growth, “several key milestones must still be met to validate [the valuation] thesis.”

The platform’s reliance on sustained trading volume further amplifies risk. A prolonged bear market could temporarily depress returns and challenge the token buyback system that supports much of the HYPE ecosystem.

From a valuation perspective, analysts describe the opportunity as “asymmetric risk/reward,” with HYPE’s fair value estimated between $32 and $49 under conservative assumptions, which is about 86% of the top of that range, given that HYPE is trading at $42.

Hyperliquid has demonstrated rapid adoption, but it still faces multiple structural and market risks. Validator concentration, transparency gaps, reliance on high trading volumes, and execution-dependent growth all mean that results remain sensitive to both internal decisions and external market conditions.

The Rogue Prince of Persia is out now on Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, Switch 2 version coming later this year

The Rogue Prince of Persia has finally launched after a period in Early Access. The game is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. You can grab it on Game Pass and PlayStation Plus too.

The game will also be headed to the Switch and Switch 2 later this year, but no firm release date for that has been established as of writing.

To celebrate the 1.0 release, Ubisoft has released a swanky new trailer that combines some lovely 2D animation as well as plenty of gameplay, showing you exactly what the game’s like before you decide to grab it or not.

Blade Runner 2099 will reportedly be released next year on Prime Video

Amazon’s Blade Runner limited series finally has a release window. Deadline reports that the upcoming sequel show, Blade Runner 2099, is slated for a 2026 release on Prime Video. The story at this point remains a mystery, though the title suggests it’ll take place 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049. Ridley Scott is said to be involved in the production.

It was revealed last year that Michelle Yeoh will star in the series, and according to Deadline, she’ll be joined by Hunter Schafer, Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey and Daniel Rigby. We first heard about the possibility of Blade Runner 2099 back in 2022, when it was reported that Amazon Studios was developing a live-action series set in that universe, but there have been few updates since. The release window was noted in an internal memo obtained by Deadline, which reports that the series is now in post-production.

Horror movie classic Halloween is getting the 1v4 multiplayer treatment, and it’s out next year

John Carpenter’s Halloween is the latest horror movie classic to get the multiplayer treatment, and it’s coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC sometime in 2026.

Halloween is being developed by Illfonic, the studio behind the likes of Friday the 13th: The Game, Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game, and Predator Hunting Grounds. And like those movie adaptations, Halloween is also being designed as a “one-versus-many” asymmetrical horror affair as the iconic Michael Myers pursues the residents of Haddonfield.

“In dynamic and ever-changing 1v4 asymmetrical multiplayer matches, hero players must arm themselves with everyday household items, weapons, and knowledge to combat an unpredictable and unkillable enemy,” Illfonic explains. “Convincing townsfolk and contacting the police will lead to increasingly powerful and thorough neighbourhood patrols. To even the odds, you can command and equip NPCs with weapons to outsmart or even overpower The Shape, providing precious windows for escape.”

Illfonic reckons its take on Halloween “masterfully recreates” the ambience of the original 1978 movie, with talk of multiple maps set across “authentic” Haddonfield locations, and a soundtrack inspired by John Carpenter’s classic score. Notably too, its familiar asymmetrical multiplayer mode will be accompanied by an offline single-player story mode featuring bots.

There’s no word of a release date for Halloween beyond its “2026” arrival on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, but there’s a mood-setting trailer above.
