Wukong 2 Already In Development, Here’s The Teaser

by admin August 20, 2025

Today, at the very end of Gamescom Opening Night Live, Geoff had one more secret to reveal: The developers behind the super-popular action RPG Black Myth: Wukong are working on a new game, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, starring a new mythical hero.

Here’s the very short teaser for Zhong Kui, which doesn’t have a release date yet:

Black Myth: Zhong Kui isn’t a direct sequel to Wukong. On the new game’s official website, the devs explained that they wanted to “build more distinct game experiences, to challenge ourselves with bolder features” and work on “fresh ideas.” However, they did tease an actual sequel or DLC to Wukong, saying: “And to all friends who love Black Myth: Wukong, the westward journey won’t end here.”

It should also be noted that, despite a slick-looking CG trailer showing off the new mythical hero and setting, Game Science admits it doesn’t have much to show because the game is still very early in development, saying that Zhong Kui is “little more than an empty folder at this stage.” However, the devs said they love announcing new things and updating fans on August 20, so they created a CG short to “let everyone know that a new project has kicked off.” But yeah, don’t expect to be playing this game anytime soon.

According to Game Science, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, like Wukong, is a single-player action RPG that will follow “the same business model as before.” That seems to imply that this sequel won’t be free-to-play when it eventually launches.

“However, you won’t be playing a monkey role this time,” explained the studio. “That said, we’re still exploring and experimenting with the concrete differences between Wukong and Zhong Kui. So take it easy—let us impress ourselves first before we serve it to you.”

On August 20, 2024, Black Myth: Wukong launched on PlayStation 5 and PC and quickly became a massive hit. The game saw over 2.4 million concurrent players on Steam alone, beating out popular games like Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Elden Ring, Cyberpunk, and many more. It still, to this day, holds the record for second-highest number of players all online at the same time on Steam, only beaten by PUBG’s massive 3.2 concurrent players record. Needless to say, a lot of people are excited for more Black Myth, and I expect that when Zhong Kui eventually arrives on PC and consoles, it will be as big if not bigger.

Game Science reveal Black Myth: Zhong Kui, a new action-RPG that aims to catch Wukong players “off guard”

by admin August 20, 2025

Black Myth: Wukong developers Game Science have revealed Black Myth: Zhong Kui, another single-player action-RPG steeped in Chinese mythology. It casts you as a ghost-hunting god who wanders between hell and Earth. Here’s a CG short from Gamescom’s Open Night Live 2025, which shows the fearsomely bearded Zhong Kui himself riding an extravagantly sized tiger.

In a Q&A on the official site, the developers call the game a “tentative first step – to build more distinct game experiences, to challenge ourselves with bolder features, and to bring fresh ideas to our world and narrative design”. They want Wukong players to feel “right at home” while “catching them off guard in the best way”. That said, for now the new game remains “little more than an empty folder”, with no release date and little sense in the CG trailer of how Zhong Kui fights, compared to Wukong. I’m guessing that tiger is a useful ally, though.

We quite liked the original Black Myth, with bygone reviews editor Ed Thorn (RPS in peace) calling it “a refreshing adventure after Elden Ring’s knotty DLC”. We were less keen on the mildly draconian PR messages to certain streamers, cautioning them to avoid “feminist propaganda”, “politics” and discussion of the Chinese games industry.

These gamergatory memos followed a lengthy report from IGN about alleged workplace sexism at Game Science. The devs refused to say anything to Ed about this when he asked at a preview event. If we’re invited to preview Zhong Kui, we’ll give it another shot.

New Black Myth game announced by Game Science, following Wukong success

by admin August 19, 2025

Black Myth: Wukong studio Game Science has revealed it’s working on the next game in the series.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui will be an all-new follow-up, focused on the titular ghost-catching god who wanders between hell and earth. Like Wukong, it will be another single-player action-RPG rooted in Chinese folklore.

A brief teaser trailer was shown at Gamescom Opening Night Live, showing a couple of men hiding from a parade of mythical characters, including Zhong Kui himself riding a giant tiger.

So why not release a Wukong sequel? Game Science explained over on the new game’s website.

“Upon completing the journey with the Destined One, we now aspire to take a tentative first step – to build more distinct game experiences, to challenge ourselves with bolder features, and to bring fresh ideas to our world and narrative design,” reads a Q&A.

“Zhong Kui came as a natural choice born of that aspiration and other contributing factors. We are confident that, in this new project, we can make refreshing changes, create new things, while taking a hard look at our past flaws and regrets. And to all friends who love Black Myth: Wukong: the westward journey won’t end here.”

There’s no release date yet, but it’s planned for PC and “mainstream console platforms”.

Wukong was a huge success for Game Science, selling 10m copies in just three days after its release last year. It’s considered China’s first AAA release and has paved the way for a whole string of Chinese-made action-RPGs on the way.

This is a news-in-brief story. This is part of our vision to bring you all the big news as part of a daily live report.

Black Myth: Wukong Hits Xbox Series X/S This August, Exactly One Year After PS5 Release

by admin June 6, 2025

Developer and publisher Game Science has announced that its action-RPG based on Journey to the West, Black Myth: Wukong, will finally come to Xbox later this year. More specifically, it will launch on Xbox Series X/S on August 20, curiously exactly one year after the PlayStation 5 release of the game. This is curious because last year, Game Science denied a year-long exclusivity deal when fans questioned why Wukong was skipping Xbox on its initial release.

Nonetheless, Wukong will finally hit Xbox this summer. According to Game Science, preorders for it open on June 18, 2025, the same day the game is getting its first-ever discount. The discount will be 20%, bringing the Standard Edition to $47.99 and the Deluxe Edition to $55.99 here in the U.S.

Wukong hit PS5 and PC on August 20 of last year, and in December, it received its first free DLC, which added a new combat challenge to the game. Wukong surpassed 10 million copies sold in just three days, and set a record for the highest concurrent player peak for a single-player game on Steam at the time.

For more about the game, head to Game Informer’s Black Myth: Wukong hub.

Wukong Xbox Release Date Reignites Conspiracies

by admin June 6, 2025

One of 2024’s biggest hits, the boss fight-fueled action adventure Black Myth: Wukong, is finally coming to Xbox Series X/S. It releases there on August 20, exactly one year after it made its original console debut on PlayStation 5, once again stoking rumors that a Sony exclusivity deal was what it kept it off the competing platform.

Why People Are Rushing To Sell Their Xbox Series X To GameStop Right Now

Microsoft randomly broke the news of the upcoming port on Thursday night, just a few days ahead of its big summer showcase. Black Myth: Wukong will be available to pre-order on Xbox starting June 18, with the game 20 percent off until July 11. That discount will also be available on PS5 and PC, developer Game Science saying it wanted to give players a heads up in case they were planning on buying the game before then.

But the real question remains why Black Myth: Wukong took so long to arrive on Xbox in the first-place. Many assumed the only explanation was an exclusivity deal with a Sony, whose Hero Initiative focuses on scouting high-quality games in the Chinese market and helping bring them to a global audience. However, Black Myth was never announced as one of those. Microsoft helped fuel those rumors with an opaque comment released back in summer 2024 ahead of the game’s launch

“We’re excited for the launch of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Windows Central at the time. “We can’t comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders, but we remain focused on making Xbox the best platform for gamers, and great games are at the center of that.”

While Game Science has always claimed it was optimization issues on Xbox Series S that was holding the port up, Forbes’ Paul Tassi reported that an exclusivity agreement of some kind was in place. IGN contradicted Game Science’s position and reported that “no tech issue” that would delay Black Myth on Xbox had been reported to Microsoft. Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, however, claimed there was no marketing agreement in place between the two companies. The whole saga left everyone confused and let console warriors on both sides claim vindication.

So why is Black Myth now just happening to drop on Xbox Series X/S exactly 365 days after it came to PS5 if there wasn’t an exclusivity deal in place? “Bringing Black Myth: Wukong to Xbox Series X|S—and ensuring the experience met our internal quality standards—was no easy feat,” the Chinese studio wrote in a newly published FAQ. “Fortunately, we were able to complete this challenging task smoothly within the first year of the game’s official release.”

Others, meanwhile, have suggested August 20 just happens to be a special date for the studio. “Game Science has been using August and the 20th for announcements since 2020,” gaming consultant Daniel Camilo told Infinite Combo. X user ignusthewise pointed out that the development team has been using August 20 for all its big drops, including gameplay trailers and reveals, for years. Not everyone is convinced, and they probably never will be unless Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer himself comes out and denies the rumors. Until then, millions of new players will get a chance to finally see why Black Myth won 2024’s Player Voice award at The Game Awards.
