Sony isn’t worried about the Nintendo Switch 2

Sony is monitoring the Nintendo Switch 2 as a competitive console, but because of the PlayStation 5’s “differentiated strategy,” they’re not too worried.

In a newly published Game & Network Services Segment Fireside Chat video, Hideaki Nishino, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO, addressed concerns that Nintendo’s positive and developing relationships with third-party developers would lead to “tougher competition” from Nintendo in the coming years. Nishino dismissed any concern and asserted that a handheld like the Switch 2 can’t keep up with the “PS5’s level of performance required to create a great experience on big screens.” The Sony boss also added that, despite how common it is for games to be multiplatform nowadays, he’s confident that the PlayStation 5 is the “best place of play.”

“We have a differentiated strategy, so PS5 is designed for an immersive gaming experience, and this includes the innovative DualSense controller features as well,” said Nishino. “We believe PS5’s level of performance is required to achieve a great experience on big screens. And in this way, we have provided a unique offering to players and creators in this current console generation.

“Publishers are increasingly shifting towards being multiplatform, so more platforms can run the same game, which is great from a creator’s perspective,” he added. “Among those platforms, our mission is that we will continue to be best place and to play and to publish. As such, we have empowered our creators to leverage our offering and services to create amazing, unique experiences for players, with high engagement and great monetization opportunities.”

As the conversation continued, Nishino was asked about potential PlayStation market declines due to Nintendo’s stronghold with the younger demographic of gamers. Nishino maintained confidence that due to the PlayStation brand’s history and investment in “supporting a large number of creators,” PlayStation will continue providing the “largest number of content available…catering to all demographics, geographics, and playstyles.”

Interestingly, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Studio Group for SIE, explained that investing in player’s relationships with the PlayStation brand also led to the company choosing to bring its first-party titles to “new formats” such as TV, film, and even anime — the latter of which he detailed as “appealing to key younger audiences.” And yes, that would have been the perfect time to talk about the previously announced Ghost of Tsushima anime. But alas, Crunchyroll and PlayStation’s forthcoming collaborative effort was not mentioned.

Hideaki Nishino’s comments regarding PlayStation’s “differentiated strategy” arrived a week after Nintendo released the Switch 2. On Wednesday, Nintendo announced that its new system had shattered console launch day records, selling over 3.5 million units globally and becoming the fastest-selling system ever in Nintendo.

Additionally, VGC reported that the Switch 2 sold 947,931 consoles in Japan in its first four days available. Game Data Library, a site that collects and archives past Japanese sales data, listed the PlayStation 2 as the country’s best-selling launch day console, with 630,000 units sold on release. With the Switch 2’s historic numbers, a new big dog may be in town — but PlayStation doesn’t seem worried for now.

Sam Altman doesn’t think you should be worried about ChatGPT’s energy usage – reveals exactly how much power each prompt uses

  • While that’s not a lot in isolation, ChatGPT has over 400 million weekly users, with multiple prompts per day

OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman has revealed ChatGPT’s energy usage for a single prompt, and while it’s lower than you might expect, on a global scale, it could have a significant impact on the planet.

Writing on his blog, Altman said, “The average query uses about 0.34 watt-hours, about what an oven would use in a little over one second, or a high-efficiency lightbulb would use in a couple of minutes. It also uses about 0.000085 gallons of water; roughly one-fifteenth of a teaspoon.”

While that might not sound like a lot as an isolated prompt, ChatGPT has approximately 400 million active weekly users, and that number is growing at a rapid rate. Bear in mind there’s a growing amount of AI tools and chatbots on the market, including Google Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude, so general AI energy usage will be even higher.

Last month, we reported on a study from MIT Technology Review which found that a five-second AI video uses as much energy as a microwave running for an hour or more. While Altman’s ChatGPT prompt energy usage reveal is nowhere near as high as that, there are still concerns considering how much people interact with AI.

We rely on AI, so is this energy consumption a concern?

There’s a constant concern about ChatGPT’s energy consumption, and it is becoming increasingly vocal as AI usage continues to rise. While Altman’s blog post will put some minds at ease, considering the relatively low energy and water usage in isolation, it could also spark more uproar.

Earlier this week, a mass ChatGPT outage led to millions of people unable to interact with the chatbot. Over the 10 hour plus period, I received emails from thousands of readers who gave me a new perspective on AI.

While I’d be lying if I said AI’s energy consumption doesn’t concern me, it would be unfair to overlook the positives of the technology and how it is improving the lives of millions.

The climate crisis is not limited to me and you, but unfortunately, it’s the working class that ultimately pays the price. ChatGPT’s energy consumption at a mass scale may be a severe problem in the future, but then again, so are the private jets flying 10-minute flights.

The AI climate concerns are not black and white, and those who criticise the impact of the technology on the planet are equally vocal about the impact of other technologies. That said, we’re only at the beginning of the AI revolution, and energy consumption will continue to rise. At what point should we be worried?

Eugenia Cooney fans worried as TikToker goes AWOL after ending stream ‘not feeling good’

YouTube and TikTok star Eugenia Cooney left fans worried after she began to gag during a live stream and abruptly ended the broadcast.

Eugenia Cooney is a prominent influencer across multiple platforms who specializes in fashion and beauty content.

Fans have regularly expressed concerns for Cooney’s health over the years, with the star suffering from an apparent eating disorder. In 2024, TikTok even blocked users from searching for her content, and instead directed them to the National Alliance for Eating Disorders.

In May 2025, Cooney, who has over 4M followers on TikTok and YouTube combined, once again sparked concerns from fans after suddenly ending her TikTok live broadcast when she claimed to have fallen ill.

During the broadcast, 30-year-old Cooney suddenly appeared to collapse and began to start gagging. The influencer then told her viewers that she “wasn’t feeling that great.”

“I think I might just get off,” she added. “I’m kinda letting my stress get to me. I’m gonna get off for now.”

In the time since, two videos have been posted to her TikTok channel, but, as reported by The Daily Mail, both were pre-recorded – with one supposedly being filmed a year ago.

Fans were very worried about her wellbeing following the livestream incident. “She genuinely looked so scared before she ended that live,” one commented.

“We all just want to see you get better baby,” another remarked on a pre-recorded video.

“That stare she was doing when she sat back was so scary and upsetting. I think this is the worst I’ve seen her,” another chimed in.

Eugenia’s friend, fellow influencer Jeffree Star, told viewers that Cooney was “clearly not ok” and fans have “no idea what she’s going through.”

At the time of posting Eugenia hasn’t responded to fans’ concerns on any platform.

Despite all the calls for Nintendo to drop its price, everyone and their mum has been trying to pre-order a Switch 2 now that they have the chance, leading to fears Ninty might not be able to make enough consoles to meet all the demand in timely fashion. The good news is that it sounds like a deal with Samsung could help supercharge Switch 2 production a bit.

It’s worth noting that to this point, pretty much all the chatter about Switch 2 sales has had the spectre of an unstable US tariff situation hanging over it, with any change in that threatening to potentially throw a spanner in the works. Hence even Nintendo itself putting out a launch sales forecast that most analysts reckoned was playing things safe.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Nintendo’s opted to do a deal with Samsung to produce chips for the new console, a move that could position the Switch 2 maker to up its production of Mario’s newest home box.

The deal has a chance to allow Nintendo to manufacture and sell 20 million Switch 2 units by the end of March 2026, a higher watermark than before, with the possibility for Samsung to “ramp up further if needed, though much would depend on capacity at hardware assemblers”.

Right, here comes the nerdy bit, though I appreciate that’s a bit of a rich thing to write in a story that was already about video games. Samsung is reportedly producing these chips using an 8-nanometer node, and landing this deal will help it in its fight against the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co for the upper hand in the chip making market.

More interestingly for us regular folks, Bloomberg reports that Samsung is already pushing for OLED panels to be used whenever Nintendo inevitably does its Switch 2 hardware refresh down the line, putting out a slightly swankier version for those with disposable income and a desire for better tech.
