UAE boosts efforts to tackle cryptocurrency crime worldwide

by admin September 15, 2025

The UAE Ministry of Interior (MOI) participated in the International Cryptocurrency Security Action Week workshop in Singapore.

Summary

  • UAE joins global law enforcement in Singapore to fight crypto fraud and laundering
  • Digital Dirham CBDC launch set for late 2025 with wholesale and retail use cases
  • Dubai pushes $16b real estate tokenization, Emirates to accept crypto payments

The UAE joined global law enforcement agencies to address cryptocurrency-related crime challenges. The event was organized by the Secure Communities Forum with Mastercard.

Enhanced international cooperation on crypto crimes

The workshop brought together hundreds of experts from law enforcement and security professionals to share advanced methods for tracking cryptocurrency fraud and combating money laundering.

Participants included representatives from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, INTERPOL, the US Internal Revenue Service, the Royal Malaysian Police, and leading technology companies worldwide.

Sessions provided practical training on investigating dark web activities and connecting law enforcement agencies with cryptocurrency exchanges and analytics firms.

This public-private cooperation model aims to create more effective responses to changing crypto crime patterns across three focus areas.

These include investigating cryptocurrency crimes using advanced tracking methods, strengthening cooperation between agencies and exchanges, and providing insights on digital assets and emerging risks.

The UAE’s recent moves have positioned it as a crypto-friendly jurisdiction through clear regulatory frameworks established by VARA and proactive law enforcement engagement with international partners.

Crypto integration accelerates across UAE

The UAE is accelerating crypto adoption across multiple sectors.

The Central Bank of the UAE plans to launch the Digital Dirham between October and December 2025, following comprehensive technical documentation released in July. The CBDC will be available in both wholesale and retail formats and will have full legal tender status.

Dubai is leading government-backed real estate tokenization through the Prypco Mint platform, developed in partnership with VARA and the UAE Central Bank. Built on the XRP Ledger, the platform allows fractional ownership starting at AED 2,000 and aims to tokenize up to $16 billion worth of Dubai real estate by 2033. The first tokenized property sale attracted 224 investors, 70% of whom were entering Dubai’s real estate market for the first time.

Emirates Airlines will begin accepting cryptocurrency payments through its partnership with Crypto.com in 2026, allowing passengers to pay for flights using Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins.

The shockingly small Mini SSD threatens microSD dominance yet depends on Biwin seeking SDA or PCI-SIG approval to succeed worldwide

by admin September 14, 2025

  • Biwin Mini SSD risks obscurity without SDA or PCI-SIG standard approval
  • SanDisk’s early SDA submission made microSD a universal storage success
  • Mini SSD hits 3,700MB/s reads, crushing MicroSD Express’s 985MB/s ceiling

Chinese storage maker Biwin has introduced the “Mini SSD,” a format far smaller than a US penny yet offering capacities up to 2TB.

Measuring just 15mm x 17mm and 1.4mm thick, it targets laptops, tablets, phones, and cameras.

Sequential read speeds are listed at 3,700MB/s with writes at 3,400MB/s through a PCIe 4×2 connection, placing it closer to full-size SD Express performance than traditional microSD speeds.

Why universal standards matter for adoption

Despite achieving such speed, Mini SSD may never reach its full potential unless Biwin follows SanDisk’s example.

When SanDisk launched microSD in 2005, then called T-Flash, it promptly submitted the format to the Secure Digital Association (SDA), the industry body overseeing SD card standards.

That move enabled “a ton of companies” to manufacture compatible cards, cementing microSD’s near-universal adoption.

Without taking a similar step, Biwin’s format risks remaining exclusive and failing to gain widespread support.

To truly replace microSD, Biwin must submit the Mini SSD to either the SDA or PCI-SIG, the two leading organizations currently setting removable storage standards.

If it is adopted, members of both SDA and PCI-SIG could then seriously consider this SSD for their devices.

Mini SSD has strong potential; it is faster than microSD Express cards, which top out at about 985MB/s, and can match SD Express cards at 3,940MB/s, which are nearly twice the size.

The Mini SSD’s slot functions like a SIM tray, allowing users to eject it with a pin, making swaps or upgrades straightforward.

It boasts IP68 water and dust resistance and can withstand three-meter drops, qualities that might suit mobile hardware exposed to rough handling.

While this may not be the fastest external SSD on the market, its tiny form makes it relevant for space-conscious and highly portable devices.

Currently, M.2 drives remain quicker, with some reaching 14,000MB/s, and still dominate the largest SSD category, although Mini SSD is closing the gap with portability.

Two Chinese gaming handheld consoles, the GPD Win 5 and OneNetbook’s OneXPlayer Super X hybrid, have already adopted dedicated Mini SSD slots.

QA firm Testronic secures “significant” new investment as it restructures worldwide operations

by admin September 11, 2025

QA company Testronic has secured “significant” new investment, which it says will be used to “accelerate growth and future-proof its worldwide operations.” It will also use the funding to “strengthen” its leadership team.

Though the company didn’t expand on the specifics of that investment from TDC, a capital partner of global investment firm KKR, it did disclose a restructure that has seen its Madrid and Belgrade offices closed, and the Catalis Group name retired.

While the company also didn’t disclose how many people have been impacted by the closures, a spokesperson told Game Developer that the redundancies equated to 4.8% of its global headcount.

Testronic also stated it had doubled the number of its testers in Manila, and is “sharpening its focus on its Centre of Excellence” in the U.S., Europe, and South East Asia.

There have also been a number of senior hires, including former Meta director Samantha Williams as chief revenue officer, former senior QA exec Lewis Read as VP global partnerships, and former Keywords marketing director Linda Quinn, who joins as global head of marketing.

“This is a pivotal moment for our company. Making changes that affect people is never easy, but these decisions are about strengthening our business for the future,” said CEO Sharon Baylay-Bell. “We are in a very strong financial position, and this refocus allows us to invest more deeply in our Centres of Excellence in the US, Europe and South East Asia. We are recruiting across all three regions, and remain committed to innovation and state-of-the-art technology.

“We can now focus on delivering the services at which we excel – QA Testing and Localization via Testronic, and award-winning 3D and VFX Art via Secret 6. The sale of Curve Games has allowed us to do just that. It has also enabled us to streamline the business to eliminate what had been something of a complicated corporate structure.

“This is a significant stage in our company’s journey. By leveraging our core capabilities and driving innovation, we are well-positioned to create stronger, deeper client partnerships that are player-focused, client-first, and outcomes-led.”

Testronic opened a new “state-of-the-art testing facility” in Manila, Philippines, back in April. Situated in the Mega Tower in Mandaluyong City, Testronic said “the world-class location is designed to ensure the delivery of QA services of the highest quality to clients around the world” and is “fully supported by leading-edge security.”
