Mio: Memories in Orbit has all the wonder of playing Inside for the first time and its devs are working hard to make it even better

by admin June 13, 2025

To say that I had absolutely no idea what was going on the first time I played Mio: Memories in Orbit is probably an understatement. I was far too busy admiring and exploring the beautiful if slightly creepy landscape to pay much attention to any greater goal. But after getting smacked around by a couple of robots I came to my senses.

You play as Mio in this metroidvania, who has woken up in an enormous technological ark which is floating through space. The catch being you don’t really know what it is or what you’re doing there at first. So the only thing to do is to explore and figure it all out as you go along.

“As you progress into the intricate environments of the Vessel, you’ll be able to unlock new memories,” a news blog says. “Strike enemies that block your way and meet with different powerful guardians, holders of the spaceship’s darkest secrets. These encounters will make you grow into a formidable force.”

The more I think about it, the more I realise that I play a lot of games where the main character starts off with no knowledge of what’s going on and has to grapple with a new mysterious environment at the same time I do. Playing through Mio felt like the first time I picked up Inside or Limbo—dropped in a kinda unsettling world, clambering around, trying to make it out somewhere safe and maybe piece together what was going on as I went.

My favourite game last year was Ultros which had the same premise of landing on an odd spaceship full of psychedelic plants, masked travellers, and godlike creatures, and exploring it to uncover its odd secrets. I’m thrilled to be able to walk down that path again with an equally stunning metroidvania, even if I’ve traded the vibrant plants for a techno-dystopia.

It took a little getting used to but the platforming and fighting is also a ton of fun. There’s not just a bunch of different enemies for you to take on, some of which pack a real punch. My advice is if you see a little dude with a hammer, don’t get swept up in how cute it looks, because they are aggressive little critters who’ll bonk you on the head at first sight.

To help deal with the more aggressive bots in Mio you can collect a couple of useful abilities. With the grappling hook you can spring around the place like a robo Spider-Man and the glider makes me feel like one of those flying squirrels.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Mio may be a ton of fun right now but it’s still just in its demo phase. Developer Douze Dixiemes has promised players that it’s going to keep working hard to make sure it’s in its best possible state for launch.

“We’ve already collected some feedback, and it seems that you particularly appreciated the art direction overall, the boss fights (especially when they gave you a hard time) and the soundtracks,” the blog post continues. “This is exactly what we were going for.”

So far the bug reports which you can log on the game’s Discord server have been few and far between. There is a log of the game refusing to launch, which I haven’t personally had any issue with. Then there’s a complaint about the jump button on both a controller and keyboard not working when you have both plugged in and an issue with someone fixing a plate with nacre (a resource you collect by killing robots) and then coming back the next day and finding it all broken up again. But it seems that the majority of players are loving their time with Mio’s demo.

The devs even compiled some of their favourite fan responses they’ve received so far. “Demo before [Silksong]! And it’s really good,” one player says. “So much love for this game that I stayed more than three hours inside, [mostly] just afk listening to the Satuary soundtrack,” someone else commented. I’m certainly excited to carry on my adventures, encounter more angry bots, and just marvel at this absolute work of art.

MindsEye devs “working around the clock” on fixes after disastrous launch

by admin June 12, 2025

MindsEye devs are “working around the clock” to fix the numerous bugs and crashes impacting players across all platforms.

Since its release on June 10, MindsEye has received a lot of criticism. The GTA-style game has been slammed for its bugs, poor performance, and crashing issues. Things have gotten so bad that players have already requested refunds, much like they did with Cyberpunk 2077.

PlayStation has even said that they are currently investigating the situation surrounding MindsEye, while some Xbox players have found themselves unable to refund the game. However, despite the ongoing issues, the devs have assured players that they are actively working on fixes.

James Gunn confirms DC is working on a new Wonder Woman movie

by admin June 11, 2025

DC Studios head James Gunn has revealed several key things about the future of its cinematic universe, including confirmation that a Wonder Woman movie is currently in development.

James Gunn clarified to Entertainment Weekly that Wonder Woman is “a separate thing” from the upcoming HBO series Paradise Island, which centers on the Amazons of Themyscira. While he acknowledged the series is “slow moving, but it’s moving,” he also shared an update: “We’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is being written right now.”

Diana of Themyscira has had a rough go of it in recent memory, following the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3 led by the previous team of Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins. Speaking in 2022 about the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3, Jenkins said, “I was open to considering anything asked of me. From my understanding, there was nothing I could do to move things forward at that time. DC is clearly undergoing major changes, so I understand that these decisions are difficult right now.” Warner Bros. Games recently shut down three of its studios and canceled all projects in development, including the long-anticipated Wonder Woman game.

James also explained that although an actor has yet to be cast for the role, Batman, Superman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman are important figures for the future of DC Studios. “I wouldn’t say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us. Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we’re dealing with the other two.”

A big Civilization 7 update is on the way with ‘large and huge maps,’ Steam Workshop support, and a promise to keep working on it

by admin June 11, 2025

A beefy new update for Civilization 7 is coming soon, featuring “several long-awaited features” including Large and Huge maps, new advanced game options, town specializations, and Steam Workshop support.

The full low-down for those who want to dive deep is up on the Civilization website, but here’s the crash course version:

  • Large and Huge map sizes, with a note that “bigger maps have bigger hardware demands,” so you may notice slower turn times or performance drops while playing on them
  • New Advanced Game Options including selectable crisis types, customizable AI difficulty, and the ability to bypass Civ unlocks so you can select from any civilization during age transitions
  • Steam Workshop support for better mod support, with documentation, “best practices,” and a few example mods made by members of the development team
  • New Town Specializations will see the addition of a new Resort Town, reworked Urban Center, and “small but meaningful” tweaks to other town types
  • New City-State Bonuses, Pantheons, and Beliefs: 24 new City-State bonuses, 2 new Pantheons, and a big batch of 14 new Religious Beliefs (across Founder, Reliquary, and Enhancer Beliefs)

Naturally, bug fixes, UI updates, and quality-of-life improvements are also in the works, along with “some surprises”—all will be revealed in the full patch notes, which are “coming soon.”

Related articles

Firaxis also touched on what’s coming beyond this update, including some features targeted for July, and bigger-picture issues including overly abrupt Age transitions, lack of replayability, and a need to improve the “sense of empire identity and continuity throughout a multi-Age campaign.”

“These are significant areas of the game that are incredibly important to get right, but are more complex to solve,” Firaxis wrote. “Addressing this feedback in a satisfying way will take time, over the course of several updates. That said, you’ll start to see some smaller changes in July focused on end of Age countdowns and improvements to Age Transitions.

“For the longer-term and broader changes, we’ll share more detailed plans here when we’re ready. We’re invested in making these changes and empowering you to enjoy what sets Civ 7 apart.”

Civilization 7 has indeed struggled since its release earlier this year. It remains stuck with a “mixed” user rating on Steam, and user reviews are not currently headed in the right direction. Player numbers are also not where they should be: Civ 7’s concurrent player count on Steam is lagging well behind that of Civ 6 and, more worryingly, Civ 5. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of publisher Take-Two Interactive, said in May that the company is “really happy” with Civilization 7 overall, and that “in the fullness of time, it’ll be just great,” but how much time the company is willing to give it before it decides to move is the big question right now.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Firaxis said it’s aiming to have the next update for Civ 7—update 1.2.2, if you’re tracking these things—on June 17, but for now that remains subject to change.

U.S. SEC Chair Says Working on ‘Innovation Exemption’ for DeFi Platforms

by admin June 10, 2025

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is working on policy to exempt decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms from regulatory barriers, said Chairman Paul Atkins.

Software developers building DeFi tools have no business being blamed for how they’re used, Atkins and other SEC Republicans contended at the final of five crypto roundtables that have been held at the agency since the leadership turnover under President Donald Trump.

The chairman told a roundtable of DeFi experts on Monday that he’s directed the SEC staff to look into changes to agency rules “to provide needed accommodation for issuers and intermediaries to seek to administer on-chain financial systems.” Atkins called that potential exemptive relief “an innovation exemption” that would let entities under SEC jurisdiction bring on-chain products and services to market “expeditiously.”

“Many entrepreneurs are developing software applications that are designed to function without administration by any operator,” Atkins said in remarks at the event. While he noted the technology enabling private peer-to-peer transactions can “sound like science fiction,” he said “blockchain technology makes possible an entirely new class of software that can perform these functions without an intermediary.”

“We should not automatically fear the future,” Atkins said.

DeFi is a subsection of the broader cryptocurrency industry that seeks to recreate financial tools and products with code that replaces the role of traditional intermediaries such as banks and brokerages.

The Republican members of the commission — currently outnumbering the Democrat 3-1 — have been eager to move forward with crypto-friendly policy. While DeFi is often given short shrift in policy discussions that focus more on regulation of the higher-volume industry of crypto exchanges, brokers and custodial services. Though DeFi developers have faced years of distrust from U.S. government agencies, Republicans now in power are seeking to lighten those pressures.

“The SEC must not infringe on First Amendment rights by regulating someone who merely published code on the basis that others use that code to carry out activity that the SEC has traditionally regulated,” said Commissioner Hester Peirce, who has led the SEC Crypto Task Force established this year. However, she also noted that “centralized entities can’t avoid regulation simply by rolling out the decentralized label.”

Erik Voorhees, the founder of decentralized exchange ShapeShift, joked that when he got his first SEC subpoena 12 years ago, he didn’t think he’d be invited to speak at the agency years later.

“I appreciate the change of tone and the change of stance for the commission,” he said. “I think that’s absolutely a positive for America.”

Microsoft Still Working To Bring Call Of Duty To Nintendo Fans

Microsoft Still Working To Bring Call Of Duty To Nintendo Fans

by admin June 8, 2025

Image: Nintendo / Activision / Kotaku

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 is the next entry in Activision’s long-running military shooter franchise and it’s once again coming to last-gen consoles. But what about the Switch 2? More than two-years after Microsoft and Nintendo entered into an agreement to bring Call of Duty to Switch, nothing has materialized. Sources close to the matter tell Kotaku that both sides are still working on it.

Nintendo Switch 2 Could Launch With Almost No Reviews

Microsoft and Nintendo have now negotiated and signed a binding 10-year legal agreement to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo players—the same day as Xbox, with full features and content parity—so they can experience Call of Duty just as Xbox and PlayStation games enjoy Call of Duty,” Microsoft president Brad Smith announced back in February 2023. We are committed to providing long term equal access to Call of Duty to other gaming platforms, bringing more choice to more players and more competition to the gaming market.”

That deal, the details of which have never been made public, was inked backed when Microsoft was trying to consolidate regulatory approval for its roughly $70 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. To assuage concerns that it might take one of the biggest gaming franchises in the world and make it exclusive to Xbox, Microsoft made agreements with other companies, including eventually Sony, promising that at least for the first 10 years it would continue bringing Call of Duty to other platforms, including ones it hadn’t been in years like the Switch.

So where is it? The list of platforms for Black Ops 7 revealed today does not include Nintendo older hardware or the recently launched Switch 2, even though the latter has performance capability on par with the PlayStation 4, which is getting the game this fall. While sources tell Kotaku that both Microsoft and Nintendo are still committed to getting the franchise on the latter’s hardware, it’s unclear what the hold up is or what the final result will be.

Call of Duty hasn’t appeared on a Nintendo platform since 2013’s Ghosts came to the Wii U. While the ports of the multiplayer shooter never ran particularly great on the Mario maker’s underpowered consoles, it at least provided an option for fans to access the annual blockbuster. One obvious avenue for getting Call of Duty on weaker hardware is using cloud gaming. Black Ops 6 is currently available to stream with Game Pass Ultimate but cloud gaming hasn’t been used to bring last year’s entry to Switch.

Black Ops 7 isn’t the only Microsoft first-party game that’s currently a no show on Switch 2. Despite the increased horsepower of the handheld hybrid, games like Sea of Thieves and Grounded which were previously ported to PS5 remain MIA. That might be because Microsoft doesn’t currently have plans to bring either of them over, or it could simply be that Nintendo wants to announce those plans on its own time. For now, the Switch 2 remains conspicuously absent from Microsoft’s recent multiplatform shift.

After working its magic on Zelda and Splatoon, it turns out Monolith Soft also aided development of Mario Kart World

After working its magic on Zelda and Splatoon, it turns out Monolith Soft also aided development of Mario Kart World

by admin June 5, 2025

Monolith Soft has officially announced the company helped with the development of Mario Kart World.

The developer, which previously assisted with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Splatoon 2 has stated on social media it developed the “fields and character designs” for the Nintendo Switch 2 racing game.

The studio has a history of open world video game development, becoming something of an expert in that particular area given the time spent on recent Zelda titles as well as its own Xenoblade releases. As such it makes sense why Nintendo would bring Monolith Soft over for Mario Kart World given the games’ shift to a non-linear format.

Check out our video preview for Mario Kart World here!Watch on YouTube

In 2024, Nintendo became the sole owner of Monolith Soft after years of holding roughly 80 percent of the company since 2007. In 2011, Nintendo would increase its stake to 97 percent of the company, after which those working there contributed to popular Nintendo series like Animal Crossing, Splatoon, and Zelda.

In recent years, Monolith Soft has largely been known for its ongoing Xenoblade series. In 2022 Xenoblade Chronicles 3 was released to high critical praise, and would continue this trend in 2025 with Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition.

The original version of Xenoblade Chronicles X was something of a technical marvel in the Wii U, and its Switch version brought that same quality packaged with various visual updates, dynamic resolution scaling, and greater environment detail among other tweaks and improvements.

TikTok is working again | The Verge

by admin June 3, 2025

TikTok is back online after a brief outage last night. Many people started reporting problems with the platform just after 11PM ET, noting that while TikTok wasn’t completely offline, it was definitely dealing with some kind of technical issues that impacted users trying to access the service and view video comments.

Based on reports from Reddit, Twitter, Bluesky, and looking at our own devices, some videos were able to load in TikTok’s mobile apps, but accessing other features like comments or switching between accounts wasn’t working reliably, leading some users to wonder if their accounts were banned. Trying to pull up the TikTok website, or even its support pages, displayed a message saying “An error occurred while processing your request” along with a reference code.

TikTok didn’t make any public acknowledgement about the outage or what was causing it. At the time, status pages for some of its service providers, like Akamai and Oracle, didn’t indicate any wider problems. Downdetector listed 44,000 reports at our last check before regular service was restored at around 12AM ET, so while it’s unclear what was behind the technical issues, at least everything was restored swiftly.

Update, June 3rd: The TikTok outage has now been resolved.

Tango Gameworks unveils new branding and confirms it’s working on a new action game

by admin June 2, 2025

Tango Gameworks has confirmed it is working on a new, unannounced action game.

To coincide with the launch of its new-look website and branding, Tango Gameworks revealed it was hiring, with open positions at its Tokyo studio spanning “almost every department.”

“Finally, after months of waiting, Tango Gameworks is back, and in a brand-new way,” the team said. “We’ve opened our site to give our fans and future team members a look into our studio. Here you can learn about the studio philosophy, as well as see featurettes from members of the team.

“Focused on what it feels like to make a game, our vision is centered on a studio that acts like a creative workshop, making games and experiences that emphasize that ‘hand-made’ feel we put into our work.”

Tango Gameworks was one of four Bethesda studios that Microsoft announced plans to shut down back in May 2024. It was formed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami in 2010, and was responsible for The Evil Within, The Evil Within 2 and Ghostwire Tokyo, before launching Hi-Fi Rush in 2023 to critical acclaim. Xbox acquired the studio in 2021 as part of its $7.5 billion purchase of Bethesda parent company Zenimax.

After Microsoft’s shock announcement, In August, however, PUBG publisher Krafton acquired Tango Gameworks and the Hi-Fi Rush IP from Xbox as part of a “strategic agreement”.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz shortly after the acquisition, Krafton head of corporate development, Maria Park, said: “When we heard that Tango Gameworks was facing shutdown, our team immediately flew over to Tokyo. We recognised that Tango has this rich history of innovation and creativity, and the rarity of being a relatively small studio with a strong fandom. Initially, we weren’t sure about whether their legacy of craftsmanship and creativity could continue – especially after the departure of founder Shinji Mikami. But our visit dispelled these worries.”

Star Wars Jedi director’s new studio is working on a single-player Dungeons & Dragons game

by admin June 2, 2025

Giant Skull, the studio founded by Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and God of War 3 game director Stig Asmussen last year, has signed a deal to create a new single-player action-adventure set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons.

Asmussen announced his departure from Star Wars Jedi developer Respawn Entertainment back in 2023, when it was said he was waving goodbye in order to “pursue other adventures”. Seven months later and Giant Skull was unveiled to the public with the goal of “building gameplay-driven, story immersed action-adventure games set in captivating worlds”.

And the first of those worlds, it now transpires, will be a familiar one to RPG fans; Wizards of the Coast has announced it’s signed a deal with Giant Skull to create an “all-new, single-player action-adventure title set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons”. Details are limited at this seemingly early juncture, but we do know it’s in development for PC and console using Unreal Engine 5, with more information promised “at a later date”.

“Our talented and experienced team at Giant Skull is built on creativity and curiosity,” Asmussen wrote in a statement accompanying today’s announcement. “Our goal is to craft a rich new Dungeons & Dragons universe filled with immersive storytelling, heroic combat and exhilarating traversal that players will fully embrace.”

Giant Skull’s new game is just one of a number of Dungeons & Dragons titles confirmed to be in development over the last few years. Payday developer Starbreeze, for instance, is working on a co-op live-service game currently expected to release in 2026, while Disney Dreamlight Valley studio Game Loft is developing a co-op adventure built around “real-time survival and action”. And then there’s a triple-A Unreal Engine 5 project from Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance developer Invoke Studios, first announced back in 2022.

It’s a busy time in the world of Dungeons & Dragons games, then, and amid all this, Wizards of the Coast’s search for a new studio to take on the Baldur’s Gate series following developer Larian’s departure seemingly continues.
