Winners of the UK Best Places To Work Awards 2025 revealed

The UK Best Places to Work Awards 2025 took place at the Royal Institution in London on October 2, with special awards going to Behaviour Interactive, NaturalMotion, Observer Interactive, Maverick Games, Rare, and Wushu Studios.

The awards ceremony took place after the GamesIndustry.biz HR Summit, which was attended by 141 representatives from 60 companies, including AAA, AA, and indie studios, as well as consultancy firms, training providers, and educational institutes.

The main Best Places to Work awards recognised a total of 23 firms across three categories – small, mid-sized, and large companies – for their excellence in supporting staff. These awards are judged on the basis of an employee survey (worth 80% of the score) and a company survey (worth 20%).

Rare picked up the Environmental Award for the second year in a row

The Best Places to Work Awards 2025 was sponsored by Amiqus, Games London, ICO Partners, Lighthouse Games, and Playground Games.

SEC chair outlines main directions of regulatory work ahead

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Paul Atkins recently told Fox Business that the agency will pursue crypto rulemaking and seek an innovation exemption to maintain the U.S.’s leadership in digital finance.

Atkins told anchor Maria Bartiromo on Sept. 23 that the SEC is working closely with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to determine the distribution of responsibility between the agencies and bring certainty to the market structure. 

Some projects (like single stock futures) were “torpedoed” only because of the uncertainty in whether they should have been supervised by the SEC or the CFTC.

He stated that both agencies will focus on rulemaking in the coming months and aim to establish an innovation exemption by year-end. The SEC chair said that it is not an ad hoc approach:

“We’re trying to give the marketplace some kind of stable platform upon which they can introduce their products,” he said.

The exemption aims to enable crypto businesses to launch their products immediately, thereby avoiding the early bureaucratic and regulatory burdens that typically hinder projects.

Atkins compared to Gensler

During the DeFi and American Spirit roundtable in June, Atkins explained the need for the conditional exemption relief framework in order to encourage developers.

Meanwhile, the SEC is working on new rules that Atkins argues will replace outdated securities laws applied to the crypto space.

The previous SEC chairman, Gary Gensler, treated various cryptocurrencies as unregistered securities. Still, many of the sector’s U.S.-based brands thrived, including Coinbase, Strategy, Robinhood, Ripple, and Circle. 

However, many crypto pros insist that Gensler’s cautious approach to the emerging industry left the U.S. behind Europe and the UK in terms of access to cryptocurrency markets and services. For example, Coinbase’s staking service is not available in five states. 

For years, Americans have faced challenges in participating in airdrops, buying spot ETFs, perpetual futures, and tokenized securities, as well as accessing the largest crypto exchanges, among other issues. That’s not the scenario in the UK and Europe. Estonia, one of the countries that pioneered nation-level blockchain adoption, offered tokenized securities back in 2019.

‘Make IPOs great again’

As for the plans not directly associated with crypto, Atkins said that he wants to “make IPOs great again.” He stressed that ordinary investors need to diversify their portfolios, but it’s not an easy task in the current circumstances.

According to the SEC chair, the number of public companies has shrunk by 50% in the last 30 years. He explained that going public became too burdensome in terms of regulation, compliance, reporting, and other requirements. That’s why not many companies are seeking to become public.

The fact that the top public corporations are all tech companies increases risks. So, Atkins sees the solution in streamlining and safeguarding ordinary investors’ access to private funds.

In general, Atkins’s appearance on Bartiromo’s “Mornings with Maria” indicated the SEC chair’s effort to allow U.S. crypto companies to self-regulate and provide retail investors with a broader set of investment options.

These awards recognise excellence in specific areas, and they run in addition to the overall Best Places to Work Awards for small, medium, and large companies.

The Zynga-owned studio NaturalMotion leads the pack in terms of the number of nominations, appearing as a finalist in all six categories.

Close behind is Microsoft-owned Rare with five nods, while the UK arm of Canadian developer Behaviour Interactive has scored three nominations.

Playground Games, Rocksteady, Fireshine Games, Studio Gobo, and Tanglewood Games all have two nominations each.

“Congratulations to all the nominees,” said Michael French, head of awards sponsor Games London. “We’ve been proud to support the Environmental Award at Best Places UK since the beginning, as all the nominees also represent the best way forward for studios to embrace and understand sustainability.”

The winners of the special awards, in addition to the overall winners, will be announced at a ceremony at the Royal Institution in London on October 2, 2025.

The ceremony will follow the GamesIndustry.biz HR Summit, sponsored by Amiqus, which takes place earlier in the day at the same venue. Among the speakers will be Sega’s chief people officer Nicky Ormrod, alongside Value Partnership’s Simon Court and Dan Bobby, who will discuss how they put Sega Europe back on a positive growth trajectory.

As Windows 10 Team edition reaches EOL, Microsoft Teams Rooms will no longer work on Surface Hub v1, raising challenges for enterprises

Thousands of companies could face meeting room disruption soon as the upcoming Windows 10 end of life deadline looks set to affect Microsoft Team Rooms devices.

From October 14, Surface Hub v1 devices, like other Windows 10 systems, will no longer receive updates or support from Microsoft, as the company pulls support for Windows 10 Team edition.

Unlike standard Windows 10 editions, Windows 10 Team doesn’t have an extended support option, and although Surface Hub 2S units can be upgraded to Windows 11 or fitted with a Surface Hub 3 Compute Cartridge, the original Hub doesn’t have that luxury.

“Surface Hub v1 devices will no longer be supported. It’s recommended to upgrade to a newer Surface Hub device,” Microsoft said in an update.

This advice places many meeting spaces in an awkward position, and will see some devices turning into expensive but unsupported equipment, as the impact stretches beyond Surface hardware.

The Microsoft Teams Rooms app will no longer function on Windows 10 devices after October 14, nor will the Teams Rooms Pro Management Portal.

As Microsoft puts it: “The Microsoft Teams Rooms app based on classic Teams will no longer be accessible.”

Andrew Francis, applications engineering senior manager at Shure, told The Register that many companies may underestimate the problem.

“While the initial focus is often on personal devices like laptops and desktops, there are many other endpoints that need consideration. One key example is the Microsoft Teams Rooms on a Windows 10 device,” he said.

Francis noted there are about one million active Teams Rooms worldwide, on both Windows and Android, but many Windows-based units cannot move to Windows 11 because of hardware restrictions.

An additional layer of complexity exists for those companies whose meeting room tech spans multiple departments or outsourced providers.

The looming deadline means organizations must now choose between upgrades, migrations, or replacements.

For Surface Hub 2S users, Microsoft says users have three options: install a Surface Hub 3 Compute Cartridge, perform a software migration before October 14, or unlock devices for a manual USB installation of Windows 11.

Surface Hub v1 customers sadly only have the one option, buying a new model. Failure to do so could see some meeting rooms left with costly equipment that’s no longer fit for use.

Remember episodic gaming? Former Telltale devs are bringing it back for the release of Dispatch, and there’s a chance it might work this time

Episodic games, much like baggy jeans and curtain haircuts, may be about to make a comeback, and once again it’s Telltale staff – former Telltale staff – who are leading the charge.

AdHoc Studios, a team founded by Telltale developers in 2018, when Telltale collapsed, will launch debut game Dispatch – a superhero workplace comedy – episodically in October.

Episodes will be roughly an hour long and launch in quick succession. The plan is for two a week, I was told during a press briefing. The releases will begin Wednesday, 22nd October, and continue through 29th October, 5th November and 12th November until the whole series is done.

The entire Dispatch game or series, depending on how you look at it, will cost $30, or you can splash $40 for a Deluxe Edition with some fancy extras. Note, however, you won’t be able to buy episodes individually; the team clarified this to me in a separate interview after the briefing. That means if you pay-out at launch, you’ll have to wait four weeks for the whole series to arrive. The idea is to make it like watching a TV series.

I can imagine what you’re thinking: didn’t we try this episodic thing before and didn’t it fail because it didn’t work? Weren’t we waiting ages between episodes which seemed to only ever get further and further away? Well, yes – and the former Telltale staff at AdHoc are the first people to admit this.

“We never really were able to hit it at a cadence that people could expect,” said AdHoc co-founder Pierre Shorette, a former TellTale dev, during the Dispatch press briefing. “It’s probably led to a lot of distrust with episodic formats, because the first episode comes out and then it might be ages before anything else shows up.”

Fellow former Telltaler, and fellow AdHoc co-founder Nick Herman, added: “This time we’re going to do better.” But in what way will episodic gaming be different with Dispatch?

The big difference with Dispatch is that all of the episodes are already made, so their releases are locked. We’re not in a position where a development team moves from one episode to another after each one is made. “They’re all made,” Nick Herman told me during a follow-up interview. “It’s all good.”

Another fellow Telltaler and AdHoc co-founder, Denis Lenart, added: “Part of the transaction formula in our mind was they’ve all got to be ready and they’ve all got to be good to go. Because that happened to Telltale – that’s one of the problems that happened. People would pay money and then go, ‘I thought you said next week.’ And it was like, ‘Actually, maybe it’s three or four weeks… We’ll let you know in a few weeks.’ And then that’s a horrible situation.”

Dispatch is very much like a Telltale game of old in the way it plays out – the way it gives you choice-and-consequence control over the way scenes unfold. It tells the story of a sort-of superhero called Robert Robertson, played by Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, whose inherited mecha-suit breaks and leaves him – effectively a normal person – needing to get a different job. And the job he gets is in an office working as a superhero dispatcher, sending misfit superheroes to the rescue.

It’s funny, it’s handsome, and it’s got some great voice talent in it, including Critical Role’s Laura Bailey and husband Travis Willingham. Critical Role is actually a silent partner on the game. “They’re helping us in a variety of ways that aren’t maybe traditional publisher stuff,” Nick Herman told me, which I assume to mean ‘Critical Role is lending clout and exposure’.

Why would Critical Role do that? Because AdHoc is making Critical Role’s first Critical Role video game. All we know about that game is it’ll be set in Exandria, which is the world all three of the group’s major Dungeons & Dragons campaigns have taken place in. Will it also be episodic? We don’t yet know, but I’d say there’s a good chance it will play like Dispatch or a Telltale game, given AdHoc’s area of expertise. I reckon it might draw inspiration from the Vox Machina animated Critical Role series on Amazon too, but that’s just a hunch.

A Dispatch demo was released on Steam earlier this year and is still available there now. It seems to be going down really well.

How Shift Codes And Gold Keys Work In Borderlands 4

Borderlands 4 is out now! Yay, that’s exciting. However, on PC, it has some performance problems that might dampen your enjoyment. But hey, whatever, you’re here because you want to figure out how Shift Codes work and how to get Gold Keys in Borderlands 4. It’s a weird and some might say unnecessary system, but I’ll help walk you through it. And by the end you’ll be good to go.

First, before we go any further, you need to create a free Shift account. Shift is Gearbox’s very own video game network… thing. It has been around since Borderlands 2, and the website for Shift has basically not changed since then, so it looks old, but it is pretty easy to use. Just hop over to the Shift site and make a free account. Next, you’ll want to link whatever platform you play on, like Xbox, to your new Shift account. To do that, look to the top left of the website and click “Gaming Platforms.” Then select your platform and follow the steps to log in and get everything all synced up. Okay, now, you can start redeeming Shift codes. But first…

What Are Shift Codes?

That’s a great question! Here’s a sticker. Shift codes are alphanumeric codes that are handed out by official Gearbox and Borderlands-related accounts, often on social media. These codes will provide an in-game reward when correctly redeemed. Many people can use a single Shift code, but they often have expiration dates, so older codes might not work.

One of the best and most frequent providers of new Shift codes is Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford himself, so you might want to follow him on X. Sorry about that. And no, I don’t think Pitchford pushed to create Shift simply to get more followers online, but it’s a funny theory.

Technically, Shift codes exist for other Gearbox games, like Aliens: Colonial Marines and Battleborn, but uh… well, these days, 99 percent of Shift codes are connected to Borderlands and Wonderlands because nobody plays Gearbox’s other games. Anyway, once you have a Shift code, either from Pitchford or one of the many fan sites and accounts that catalog them, it’s time to enter that code on the Shift website!

How Do I Use A Shift Code?

There are two ways to enter a Shift code and gain its rewards. The first, and worst way, is to boot up the game the Shift code is connected to and enter the code via that title’s Shift screen. This is a cumbersome way to do this and has no benefits and many drawbacks. Do you really want to enter a long string of letters and numbers with an Xbox gamepad and on-screen keyboard? Nah.

The better way to use your Shift Codes is to do so on your phone or PC. Once you’re logged into your Shift account, you can just copy the code and hop over to the website. Then you just click “Rewards” and pop your Shift code into the empty box.

Depending on the code, you’ll likely need to specify a platform. So, for example, if you put in a Shift code for a Gold Key in Borderlands 4, the game will ask you what platforms you want to redeem it on and show you every platform you have linked. Fun fact: Most codes can be reused for each connected platform. If you enter it in correctly, you’ll get a prompt letting you know, and the rewards feed below where you entered the code will update to show you what you just earned, in what game, and on which platform.

Wait, I Want Gold Keys, Not Shift Codes!

Calm down. Shift codes are how you get Gold Keys. And while it is true that not all Shift codes provide Gold Keys for various Borderlands games—some provide cosmetics and other bonuses—the vast majority of codes in 2025 will give you Gold Keys.

Just keep in mind that Gold Keys, once redeemed, can’t be used in any other Borderlands game. I have nearly 80 of the bastards waiting to be used in Borderlands 3, but none of them can make the leap to Borderlands 4. It makes me very sad.

How Do I Use These Gold Keys In Borderlands 4?

All Gold Keys in all Borderlands titles, including Borderlands 4, are used to open big gold chests that can be found in the hub areas of the various games. These chests have a high chance of dropping really good loot, including rare legendary guns and gear. In Borderlands 4, there are actually a few gold chests located at various safehouses and other points of interest, but be aware you can’t open a Gold chest until you unlock the Outbounder’s village near the starting area of the game in the Fadefields.

To use a key, just go up to the chest and hit the open button. But be warned! You really shouldn’t do this until you are at least level 40, as early on in the game you’ll likely just replace whatever you get with better gear quickly as you level up. Also, if you’re playing with randos or greedy friends, be aware that the gear you get from the chest will fly out of it after 30 seconds or so, and at that point, anyone can grab it. This happened to me. I lost a great revolver. My friends laughed. I grew more bitter.

And that’s all you need to know about Shift codes and Gold Keys. MindsEye actor feared he may never work in games again following disastrous launch, but admits players are entitled to their opinion

Alex Hernandez, the actor behind MindsEye protagonist Jacob Diaz, feared he may never work again following the game’s disastrous reception.


Build A Rocket Boy’s game launched to major criticism due to its glitches and bugs, not to mention shallow gameplay. Yet with his face on the game’s cover art, Hernandez is intrinsically linked to the game.


“It’s a difficult thing to spend two-and-a-half years on a project that you’re really proud of and you’re proud of your contribution to it,” said Hernandez on the latest FRVR Podcast. “And I only had positive experiences working on it. The people I was working with, I was proud for them, of them, I wanted it to be a success for them just as much for myself.”

He continued: “Just the response… I was like, ‘I might never work in a game again’. Because one of the caveats of being the face on the box is that people, rightly or wrongly, will associate all of their opinions and, more importantly their emotions, about this game with my face,” he said.


Still, Hernandez admits players are entitled to their opinions on the game, despite being on the receiving end of extreme vitriol.


“Gamers are a unique species, and I am one of them, where the attachment to the experience and the product is so strong, the feelings are so strong,” he said, “and the internet is an anonymous place where people will share things they would never share to your face, ever, even if they actually hated it… they just wouldn’t look you in the face and say, ‘everyone who worked on this game deserved to die. This is f**king awful, these guys are idiots’. No one would ever say that to your face. And, I think, at the same time, you’re entitled to that.”


Previously, Hernandez provided the voice and likeness for Lincoln Clay in Mafia 3, another game with a poor reception at launch.


“I’m not a superstitious man, but I can’t help but have some kind of Spidey Sense, like, ‘Is it just me?’ Do I have like the opposite of the golden touch, like the sh*t-brown touch, everything I touch turns to poop?” he joked.

Build A Rocket Boy has continued to update the game since, and promised it’s “committed” to enhancing the gameplay experience.


Still, the disastrous launch has put the future of publisher IOI Partners into question. “So, IO Interactive will publish our own games internally,” said IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak. “IOI Partners? That remains to be seen.”

“Although it shows some early promise, MindsEye is sunk by a ridiculous story, inconsistent writing, poorly designed mission scenarios, and utterly atrocious combat,” reads our MindsEye review.

Anthropic agrees to pay $1.5 billion to authors whose work trained AI in priciest copyright settlement in U.S. history

As reported by the New York Times, AI company Anthropic has agreed to a $1.5 billion settlement in a groundbreaking copyright lawsuit involving some 500,000 authors. Anthropic illegally downloaded the authors’ books and used them to train its AI model. The total settlement for this case is the largest for any copyright case in U.S. history, although the payout to each affected author is only $3,000.

The lawsuit, filed in August 2024, accused Anthropic of benefiting from pirated copyrighted books, stating, “An essential component of Anthropic’s business model—and its flagship ‘Claude’ family of large language models (or “LLMs”)—is the largescale theft of copyrighted works.”

It goes on to highlight the harm being done to authors, which goes beyond the theft of their work: “Anthropic’s Claude LLMs compromise authors’ ability to make a living, in that the LLMs allow anyone to generate—automatically and freely (or very cheaply)—texts that writers would otherwise be paid to create and sell. Anthropic’s LLMs, which dilute the commercial market for Plaintiffs’ and the Class’s works, were created without paying writers a cent. Anthropic’s immense success is a direct result of its copyright infringement.”

As a result of that copyright infringement, Anthropic has offered to pay $1.5 billion to settle the class action lawsuit before it goes to trial. This case sets a standard for the growing wave of copyright lawsuits against AI companies, but it isn’t as clear-cut as it might look. Judge William Alsup of the Northern District of California ruled that Anthropic is allowed to use copyrighted books to train its AI models if it obtains those books legally. The settlement is the result of pirating the books, not feeding them to an AI, which has been ruled “fair use.”

Additionally, the settlement Anthropic offered is a historically high sum, but it’s a miniscule bit of the company’s overall value, which sits at $183 billion at the time of writing. Earlier this week, Anthropic raised more money in a single round of funding than the entire settlement in this copyright case. Meanwhile, the $3,000 for each author impacted by the class action lawsuit is less than a typical book’s advance.

It’s also worth noting that $1.5 billion is actually far less than Anthropic could have potentially been ordered to pay if it hadn’t settled. Willful copyright infringement can result in fines of up to $150,000 per copyrighted work. The pirated data sets Anthropic used contained 7 million books. If Anthropic had been forced to pay the maximum amount for each count of copyright infringement, it could have been financial ruin for the AI company. Of course, the maximum possible fine would have been unlikely, but Anthropic still might have had to pay much more than it settled for.

This lawsuit against Anthropic is just one of several like it. Authors also have ongoing lawsuits with other AI companies, including Microsoft and OpenAI. Back in June, authors lost a similar lawsuit against Meta, but only because the judge ruled that they hadn’t offered enough evidence, stating, “This ruling does not stand for the proposition that Meta’s use of copyrighted materials to train its language models is lawful.”

AI takes over money management: but will it work?

AI is everywhere. It’s even shaping our culture. A recent New Yorker article critically examined this phenomenon, stating that artificial intelligence could serve as our own personal Scheherazade, feeding stories about ourselves and each other. This, they believe, will pull us into alternate realities and away from the one we collectively share.

While the article portrays a skeptical and fearful outlook on AI’s influence on human culture, there is one area where AI is undoubtedly useful and welcome: finance. 

Money management today, especially with the numerous apps out there, is exhausting at best and dangerous at worst. Because of the fragmented systems users are forced to endure, they often deal with failed transfers between accounts, unexpected fees, and payments stuck in limbo.

Managing crypto is just as, if not more, messy. With wallets, bridges, gas fees, and networks that don’t communicate with each other, even expert users are left confused.

But AI can offer real, lasting solutions to these problems. 

AI in finance

AI in money management is an emerging and fast-growing sector. Capcom replaces disqualified art contest winner with new work following AI allegations

Capcom has revealed new in-game Street Fighter 6 loading screen art for Kimberly which will be given to all players as part of a recent community art contest.

This piece comes as a replacement for a former entry, which was disqualified following allegations of AI use. According to the terms and conditions of the art contest, all work submitted must be entirely original, and as such the suspected AI use broke the rules.

Alongside the new art reveal comes the following statement from Capcom: “The Street Fighter 6 development team has completed the previously announced replacement for Kimberly’s new challenger screen. The illustration is based on her swimsuit Outfit 4, which has been earning rave reviews from the community.”

It’s not just the Kimberly piece players will be able to use. Taking a look at the art contest website, a selection of winning entries are displayed alongside the artist who created them. All of these – representing a wide spread of playable characters – will soon be popping up in your online matches.

These art pieces will all be free, and delivered to all Street Fighter 6 players in short order. It’s a nice end to a bit of controversy, with the contest remaining a celebration of the creative talents of Street Fighter players. You love to see it.
