Arthur Jones, who won a Super Bowl with the Ravens, dies at 39

by admin October 4, 2025

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Arthur Jones, a defensive lineman who spent his first four NFL seasons in Baltimore and won a Super Bowl with the Ravens, has died. He was 39.

Syracuse, Jones’ alma mater, said he died Friday morning. The school and the Ravens didn’t give a cause of death in their announcements.

“Arthur’s presence was a gift to everyone he encountered,” Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said. “His big, bright smile, infectious energy and eternal positivity created a presence that continuously uplifted others.”

Jones was a fifth-round draft pick in 2010 and had 8½ of his 10 career sacks in a two-season stretch in 2012-13. The Ravens beat San Francisco in Super Bowl XLVII to cap the 2012 season.

Jones sacked 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick just before a power outage at the Superdome in New Orleans. He also had a fumble recovery in that Super Bowl.

“My heart is heavy today after the loss of Art Jones,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “Art was a truly remarkable person, a dedicated teammate, a relentless worker, and someone any coach would be proud to lead. His love for life, generous spirit, and radiant smile left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

“He had a genuine gift for connecting with people, bringing joy to the locker room and beyond, and his presence was a source of light within our team and the Baltimore community.”

Jones also spent two years with Indianapolis and a final season in Washington in 2017.

Jones played for Syracuse and was the older brother of former UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former Syracuse and NFL defensive end Chandler Jones, a four-time Pro Bowler who won a Super Bowl in New England.

Jones had 38½ tackles for loss at Syracuse, a school record for an interior defensive lineman. He was a first-team All-Big East selection each of his final two seasons.

“Arthur Jones was a tremendous player and even better person,” Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack said. “We were fortunate that Arthur continued to support our football program after his playing career. He impacted many of our student-athletes, always with a smile and uplifting message.”

ESPN’s Jamison Hensley contributed to this report.

How a GameStop Shopper Won $115K in Bitcoin From a $13 Pack of Cards

by admin August 24, 2025

In brief

  • A collector recently walked away with 1 BTC from a $13 pack of cards purchased from GameStop.
  • The card came in via card manufacturer Cardsmiths’ Currency Series, which contains cards redeemable for real cryptocurrency.
  • The pull marks at least the third overall 1 BTC find in the last year.

GameStop doesn’t sell Bitcoin (though it does hold BTC)—but one patron recently scored a full Bitcoin, valued at nearly $115,000 today, after opening a pack of cards purchased at the retailer.

Nestled in a pack of Cardsmith’s Currency trading cards, an Arizona-based collector recently unveiled a 1 BTC card, which comes with a redemption code that entitles the holder to claim a full Bitcoin. The top cryptocurrency is currently trading just under $115,000, as of this writing.

“I didn’t think it was a serious possibility,” the anonymous collector told card manufacturer Cardsmiths.

Cardsmiths’ Currency series cards offer redemption cards for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Dogecoin–with the biggest redemption offerings being for 1 BTC or 1 ETH.

Collectors can purchase the packs of currency-themed cards for as low as $13.25 apiece (based on the size of the pack bundle), with 1:192 odds of pulling a crypto redemption—resulting in more than an 865,000% gain based on today’s Bitcoin price.

The recent pull marks at least the third full Bitcoin redemption in the last year via Cardsmiths, with other lucky collectors pulling full Bitcoin cards from $33 and $50 packs, respectively.

Though entitled to the full Bitcoin, the most recent collector said they are only keeping 0.5 BTC of it thanks to a pledge they made on Reddit prior to pulling the card.

“First, let me introduce myself: I’m the crazy Ape who made a promise a while back that some of you may vaguely remember,” the Reddit user named decoparts posted to the Currencytradingcards subreddit. “To recap: I was documenting my pulls from a bunch of S4 Currency cards I had saved up, and I pledged that I would give half of the after-tax value to a charity, out of whatever crypto I found.”

“Boy, was I in for a lesson on backing up my promises and putting my money where my mouth is,” they added.

Though Cardsmiths’ Series 4 Currency cards are all sold out online, its most recent SPACE Series holds unredeemed full Bitcoin cards, with packs that sell for as little as $13.75 via its online store.

The odds of walking away with crypto remain long though, with only 1 of every 192 packs expected to provide a crypto redemption card—the same odds the recent lucky collector faced.

A representative for Cardsmiths did not immediately respond to Decrypt’s request for comment.

Shinhan, Hana, Woori, KB Financial Said to Meet Tether, Circle on Won Stablecoins: Report

by admin August 22, 2025

South Korea’s largest financial groups are set to meet officials from Tether and Circle Internet (CRCL), issuers of the two largest stablecoins, as early as this week, according to Yonhap.

In separate meetings, executives from Shinhan, Hana, KB Financial and Woori Bank will discuss potential partnerships on distributing and transacting with dollar-pegged stablecoins in the country, as well as explore the issuance of a stablecoin pegged to the won.

The moves come as President Lee Jae Myung’s pro-crypto administration pushes to establish a market for stablecoins, digital tokens whose value is pegged to a conventional asset, tied to the won, a key pledge from his election campaign. The Bank of Korea shelved plans to issue a central bank digital currency (CBDC) in June following Lee’s election earlier in the month. Upbit, one of the country’s largest crypto exchanges, has already said it’s working with Naver Pay on a stablecoin.

Shinhan CEO Jin Ok-dong and Hana CEO Ham Young-joo are scheduled to meet Circle President Heath Tarbert on Friday, and Ham is also expected to sit down with a Tether official later the same day. KB Financial’s chief digital & IT officer, Lee Chang-kwon, and Woori Bank President Jeong Jin-wan are reportedly arranging similar talks with Circle, whose USDC is the second-largest stablecoin, trailing Tether’s USDT.

The deeply simulated roguelike strangeness of Caves of Qud won this year’s Hugo Award for Best Game or Interactive Work

by admin August 18, 2025

The Hugo Awards: they’re not just for science-fiction novels that make you think “I should read that one day” and never do. Now they’ve got an interactive category, so once a year you can be told how excellent one more videogame is, think “I should play that one day,” and then never get around to that either.

This year the winner of the Best Game or Interactive Work category is Caves of Qud, a game we gave a score of 94% to back in December so you can keep that “if it’s so good how come I’ve never heard of it” comment to yourself.

Caves of Qud, pronounced “cud”, is a roguelike so old-fashioned it’s barely got graphics, which fully simulates every NPC in its baffling world full of weirdos. To quote from our review, “The main quest takes you on a journey well-suited to pit stops, dotted with odd characters like a deaf-mute albino bear-porcupine gunsmith and a very rude talking fungus you have to bring with you by letting it grow on your skin.”

This year’s Hugo Award for Best Novel went to The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett and Best Series went to Between Earth and Sky by Rebecca Roanhorse. Dune Part Two picked up Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form while Star Trek: Lower Decks won Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form, which is a nice send-off for it. (The tie-in comic Warp Your Own Way picked up best Best Graphic Story or Comic as well.)

The Best Game or Interactive Work category was added to the Hugos back in 2021 as an experiment, when it was won by Hades. The experiment must have worked because it’s since become a permanent addition, with Baldur’s Gate 3 winning it in 2024.

The other nominees this year were 1000xResist, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, Tactical Breach Wizards, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which I will go to the grave defending no matter what anyone else thinks about it.
