White House Weighing Candidates for Multiple CFTC Spots: Former Chairman Giancarlo

Though the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Acting Chairman Caroline Pham has been blazing forward on crypto-friendly policy, even as she has one foot out the door, the White House is working quickly to find a permanent successor after abandoning President Donald Trump’s first choice.

Trump nominee Brian Quintenz, a former commissioner, was dropped recently, and the administration has since been “hard at work” on announcing a new choice, said former CFTC Chairman Chris Giancarlo, who added that he was at the White House on Wednesday.

“The White House felt that they had things in hand; it didn’t work out,” Giancarlo said in an interview on CoinDesk TV. “I’m very optimistic that soon we will have nominees that everyone will say, ‘Wow, great choices.'”

Giancarlo — a longtime crypto advocate sometimes known in the industry as “Crypto Dad,” a name he used as the title of a book he wrote on the digital assets movement — said the White House is vetting CFTC candidates beyond the chairmanship. Without a slate of commissioners, whoever takes over from Pham would be alone at the commission, which is meant to have five members by law. Policies instituted by a single-member commission could be vulnerable to legal challenges.

“They’re very aware of this,” Giancarlo said. “They know what they’ve got to do.”

A top contender for the chairmanship is Mike Selig, who has been working as a senior official on crypto policies at the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to people familiar with the vetting. Any nominees still need confirmation from the U.S. Senate before they can take the jobs — a process that stalled mid-stream with Quintenz after he was openly opposed by Gemini CEO Tyler Winklevoss.

The CFTC is likely to be a leading regulator of U.S. crypto markets, especially if the Senate completes and passes market structure legislation that’s already cleared the House of Representatives. That effort would give new powers to the smaller cousin of the SEC, granting it jurisdiction over the spot markets where crypto commodities such as bitcoin trade directly. Though the SEC has been moving quickly into a crypto-cheering posture under Trump, the CFTC had a deep history with the sector since its 2015 move to recognize bitcoin as a commodity.

Earlier this week, Pham sought to assure financial-sector lawyers that the CFTC is moving forward fine under her temporary leadership, though she’s also said she’s hoping to leave the agency soon. Giancarlo said she is owed a “debt of gratitude” for what she’s doing, much of which has been focused on a “crypto sprint” she’s offered to match the SEC’s Project Crypto agenda.

While the shorthanded CFTC awaits new leadership, the Senate has been slowed by the federal government shutdown and is showing few signs of a near-term completion of the industry legislation.

Representative Bryan Steil, the chairman of the crypto subcommittee within the House Financial Services Committee, said in a separate interview on CoinDesk TV that the current goal is “getting this completed as soon as possible, but no later than the end of the year.” That’s slipped considerably from Trump’s initial deadline of August.

The House had already passed its version this year — the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act — with an overwhelming bipartisan vote. Steil argued the Senate can save a lot of time by “using Clarity as baseline text” for its work, though Senate Republicans proposed their own draft language and that’s the text lawmakers have been working from.

Nomination stalls amid disputes and delays

Quintenz, a pro-crypto figure nominated in February 2025, had been expected to bring industry expertise to the CFTC as it expands oversight of digital assets. His nomination progressed through hearings in June but stalled in July when the White House asked the Senate Agriculture Committee to pause a scheduled vote.

The delay followed lobbying by billionaire Tyler Winklevoss, a key Trump supporter, who raised concerns tied to Gemini’s ongoing CFTC enforcement case. In September, Quintenz publicly released private messages with Winklevoss, accusing the Gemini co-founder of lobbying against him.

The dispute added to existing questions raised by tribal groups, gaming lobbies, and ethics watchdogs about his role at prediction market Kalshi and pre-nomination briefings from CFTC staff. As the process dragged on, the administration began reviewing alternative candidates.

Next steps for the CFTC chair role

The decision leaves the CFTC with only acting chair Caroline Pham, following a series of commissioner resignations. The agency, which oversees trillions in swaps trading, is also expected to play a larger role in regulating crypto under legislation moving through Congress.

The Trump administration has made clear it wants the CFTC to be central to U.S. digital asset oversight. A White House official said the president remains committed to making America the global hub for crypto markets and is looking for a nominee aligned with that vision.

Potential candidates reportedly include former CFTC commissioner Jill Sommers, ex-CFTC official Josh Sterling, and SEC counsel Mike Selig.

Quintenz’s exit marks a turning point for the agency at a time when institutional and retail interest in crypto markets continues to grow. With a new nominee expected soon, the CFTC’s direction under Trump could shape the regulatory framework for digital assets well into the next decade.

White House Withdraws Pro-Crypto Brian Quintenz’s Name From CFTC Chair Nomination

The White House withdrew former Commodity Futures Trading Commissioner Brian Quintenz’s nomination to run the agency late Tuesday, capping off a month-long fight over U.S. President Donald Trump’s pick for agency chair.

Trump tapped Quintenz shortly after retaking office. Quintenz joined venture firm Andresseen Horowitz’s global head of policy, and has been an adviser to firms like prediction marketplace Kalshi since leaving the CFTC following his term as commissioner.

In a statement to CoinDesk, Quintenz said, “Being nominated to chair the CFTC and going through the confirmation process was the honor of my life. I am grateful to the President for that opportunity and to the Senate Agriculture Committee for its consideration. I [am] looking forward to returning to my private sector endeavors during this exciting time for innovation in our country.”

Politico and Punchbowl News earlier reported that the White House had withdrawn Quintenz’s nomination.

Quintenz has made statements in favor of the crypto industry since his first term as commissioner, including floating the idea of a self-regulatory organization for the industry similar to securities markets’ Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Despite this, crypto exchange Gemini co-founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss — both of whom support Trump — opposed his nomination in late July, with Tyler telling CoinDesk that he did not believe Quintenz’s views on developers and his work with Kalshi qualified him for the role.

However, Quintenz released messages he had exchanged with the Winklevoss brothers earlier this month, suggesting that they really opposed his nomination because he would not commit to a public view on a CFTC enforcement action against Gemini. In his messages, Quintenz said that it would be better for a “fully confirmed chair” to review the CFTC’s actions.

Crypto lobbyist organizations and companies wrote a public letter supporting his nomination in a late August bid to put his nomination back on track.

Still, the White House asked the Senate Agriculture Committee to postpone a vote on Quintenz’s nomination a few times in July. Last week, Semafor reported that it had begun vetting new candidates to run the agency, which at present is helmed by Acting Chairman Caroline Pham. All of the other commissioners at the agency at the start of 2025 have since left, and Pham has indicated her intention to depart as well at some point, CoinDesk previously reported.

The CFTC’s potential lack of a permanent chair comes as Congress considers legislation that would give the agency a more prominent role in regulating crypto spot markets, though the legislative process is likely to be delayed by a pending government shutdown.

They’ll play for anywhere from five to 120 minutes. The Aqua10 also has a humidifier function, which looks extremely cool paired with lights that illuminate the vapor like a fire. During our conversation, Brown compared Praxis to Israel—minus a world war and a holocaust, of course. “There were these stateless people who were scattered,” he says, and they had “this idea of Judea and building a state and returning to the OG homeland.” (Srinivasan has been even more direct in the past, saying, “What I’m really calling for is something like tech Zionism.”)

Of course, the beauty of a network state is that it can embody “the West” without actually having to be there. In addition to the Vandenberg location, Praxis announced that its team would be traveling to Morocco, Japan, and the Dominican Republic, among other countries, to explore the possibility of establishing an SEZ. While Brown says he does not consider Morocco to be Western, Praxis is willing to work with countries that are willing to give it land. Like Ion, Brown promises an influx of companies and tech talent that “can radically benefit” those places, boosting property values and creating jobs for local residents. It is unclear if those Moroccan residents would be considered “citizens” in a Praxian SEZ. In the meantime, through an initiative called Praxis Development, the group plans to buy up residential properties where its members can live as a stepping stone toward “real territory, real assets, and real power.”

“This is a colonial project, aimed at tech empire,” says Gil Duran, a former political consultant and author of the independent newsletter The Nerd Reich. “It sounds like colonization 2.0. When you go to another person’s country and create your own country there, no matter your excuse, no matter your rationale.”

Or, as the Praxis X account posted on September 1, “Cyberpunk East India Company.”

The most evolved version of the SEZ strategy is Próspera, a charter community, backed by Pronomos Capital, on the island of Roatán in Honduras. It has an arbitration system, low taxes, and a code of rules. (Vitalia, Ion’s original project, considered setting up a permanent location within Próspera.)

Próspera’s leaders say they do not consider it a network state, that their goal is “city-scale development that advances human progress and prosperity—within Honduran sovereignty and law.” The Honduran government, then led by Juan Orlando Hernández Alvarado, granted the city its charter in 2017. But Hernández was arrested in 2022 for drug trafficking (he has since been convicted), and the new government repealed Próspera’s SEZ status, alleging that these types of zones violated the country’s sovereignty. Próspera then filed an $11 billion lawsuit against the Honduran government, alleging that the government had failed to “honor its guarantees of legal stability.” The case is ongoing.

Ion, for his part, says that he “would approach different things differently” in Viva City.

This news story about Fata Deum is written in homage of a random early access Steam reviewer who remarks that if you’ve never played a god sim before, they’re kind of like idle sims. My word, the casually ferocious and embittered atheist poetry of that. Consider my fedora tipped, milords and ladies. I’m off to read the Screwtape Letters again.

Fata Deum isn’t just any born-again idle sim. It pays overt homage to Lionhead’s Black & White, with higgledy-piggledy 3D island maps and a familiar hand cursor, used to carry believers to safety or lob them into the sea. There are some significant differences, however.

For one thing, you don’t get a Creature avatar to first mold in your holy image and then end up squabbling with when you decide to do an Old-New Testament of sorts, flipping from Benign to Vengeful or vice versa midway through a campaign.

Ah, I remember how my Lion Creature kept extinguishing the houses I smote with thunderbolts, exactly as I’d taught him when he was a cub, and I was a smiling beard in the sky rather than a cosmic arsonist. I’m sorry to see less of that in Fata Deum, but the upside of not having a Creature is that you’ll spend less of this god sim cleaning up godbeast turds.

Another difference is that Fata Deum operates around a day-night split encompassing two genres of godliness. By day, you’re more of an indirect presence, influencing villagers through visions and blessings. By night, you can intervene directly to make them build stuff and, if you like, raid the dominions of rival gods.

There’s a familiar spectrum of Nice and Nasty divine behaviour. You can sacrifice villagers to raise demons or turn the corpses into zombies. Or you can pat them on the head and have them throw wild parties. Or you can mix it up – a little from column Altruism, a little from column Bastard.

There are other gods to worry about. They include deities of Violence, Deceit, Fertility and Pleasure. Each god’s behaviour is reflected in the appearance of the terrain. I don’t see one for Idleness in the trailers or on the Steam page – I guess I’ll have to thrash that one out myself, by leaving the PC running for 10,000 years.

Developers 42 Bits Entertainment plan to keep this humming along in early access till late 2026. “We firmly believe that reviving the god game genre is a rather difficult task that can only be successfully accomplished through intensive dialogue with the community,” they note. Do you consider the god sim in need of reviving? I thought last year’s Reus 2 did a pretty fine job of it myself.

Web3 White Hats Earn Millions, Dwarfing $300K Cybersecurity Salaries

Top white hats hunting vulnerabilities across decentralized protocols in Web3 are earning millions, dwarfing the $300,000 salary ceiling in traditional cybersecurity roles.

“Our leaderboard shows researchers earning millions per year, compared to typical cybersecurity salaries of $150-300k,” Mitchell Amador, co-founder and CEO of bug bounty platform Immunefi, told Cointelegraph.

In crypto, “white hats” refers to ethical hackers paid to disclose vulnerabilities in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. Unlike salaried corporate roles, these researchers choose their targets, set their own hours and earn based on the impact of what they find.

So far, Immunefi has facilitated more than $120 million in payouts across thousands of reports. Thirty researchers have already become millionaires.

“We’re protecting over $180 billion in total value locked across our programs,” Amador said, adding that the platform offers bounties of up to 10% for critical bugs. “These million-dollar payouts reflect the reality that many protocols have tens or hundreds of millions at stake from single vulnerabilities,” he said.

$10 million bug bounty saved billions

The largest single payout to a Web3 white hat was $10 million, awarded to a hacker who found a fatal flaw in Wormhole’s crosschain bridge. Amador said that vulnerability could have vaporized billions.

Despite that vulnerability being uncovered, Wormhole suffered a $321 million exploit on its Solana bridge in 2022, the largest crypto hack of the year. In Feb. 2023, Web3 infrastructure firm Jump Crypto and Oasis.app conducted a “counter exploit” on the Wormhole protocol hacker, clawing back a total of $225 million.

Amador revealed that critical vulnerabilities account for the biggest rewards. Top researchers have pulled in between $1 million and $14 million, depending on the severity and scope of their findings. “These are the 100x hackers who can find vulnerabilities others miss,” he said.

While the early years of DeFi were plagued by smart contract bugs, 2025 has seen a rise in “no-code” exploits like social engineering, compromised keys, and lapses in operational security. Despite that shift, bridges remain the most lucrative targets due to their crosschain complexity and the vast sums they secure.

Patterns have emerged in the types of projects that get breached most often. “DeFi protocols handling significant TVL and lacking strong bounty programs are the most exposed,” Amador said. He warned that early-stage teams rushing to market without security measures, as well as complacent established players, carry elevated risks.

Crypto hackers stole $163 million in August

As Cointelegraph reported, crypto-related hacks and scams hit $163 million in losses in August, a 15% rise from July’s $142 million. Despite the spike, overall incidents trended downward, with only 16 attacks recorded compared to 20 in June.

The majority of losses came from two major incidents. These include a $91 million social engineering scam targeting a Bitcoiner and a $50 million breach of Turkish exchange Btcturk.

We’re back with another build. This time, a compact white gaming PC, powered by AMD’s top gaming CPU, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and a Gigabyte RTX 5070 Ti Eagle OC Ice SFF. I’ve tried to gain a few style points with the Cooler Master Hyper 612 Apex and Cooler Master Sickleflow Edge 360 fans—three fans combined into a single unit. That’s more of a time-saver than you’d think and makes for fewer cables.

All of which has been stuffed inside a surprising affordable chassis: Thermaltake’s S100 Tempered Glass Snow Edition. This budget case looks better than it should, considering its price tag, and altogether brings this white PC build together nicely.

Speaking of a school honoring its location, the SMU Mustangs are making clear what city their program represents with their uniforms.

The Mustangs’ Dallas threads come with a number of unique elements — most noticeably, the jersey has the city’s name in script on the front, as opposed to the customary “SMU.” Dallas is honored on the helmets as well, as the school’s red mustang motif is placed inside the negative space of a “D” outline.

The UTEP Miners call El Paso, Texas — nicknamed the Sun City — home, and the team is paying homage to the city’s moniker on its helmets this week.

The lids feature a unique logo design that includes the nickname positioned under a mountain sunset, with the negative space between the “Sun City” text and sunset forming the Miners’ traditional pickaxe emblem. The sun rays take inspiration from El Paso’s city flag.

It’s a standard blue and white uniform for the Buffalo Bulls this week, but with one notable twist on the helmet art.

This week’s helmets for the Bulls will prominently feature the numbers 716 on one side, an homage to the city of Buffalo’s traditional area code.

Slick threads

You won’t find many color schemes as pretty as the one the Rice Owls are rolling with this Saturday.

The light blue the Owls are repping is already easy on the eyes, but what really makes the uniform are the colors accenting that shade. Navy complements the baby blue on helmets and shoulder sleeves, and the numbers are outlined in red, creating a look akin to the powder blue threads once donned by the Houston Oilers.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs host the No. 12 Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday, seeking to pull off a major upset in a prime-time kickoff.

The Bulldogs’ uniforms reflect the nighttime kickoff — the team is going with an all-black look for the SEC vs. Big 12 matchup. The black helmet, jersey and pants are complemented by maroon stripes that run across the shoulder sleeves and down the center of the helmet.

It’s easy to score a hit with all-white threads, and the Liberty Flames are rolling with their own variation of the classic look against Jacksonville State.

In addition to a clean script “Liberty” on the front of the jersey, the distinguishing feature of the Flames’ uniforms comes on the helmet. Instead of the school’s name or logo, the helmet features a cartoon eagle in mid-throwing motion.

After an all-gold Week 1, the Minnesota Golden Gophers are sticking with the color-rush style theme for Week 2.

This time, Minnesota is going all-in on the school’s other primary color, maroon. The Golden Gophers will don maroon pants, jerseys and helmets this week, with the helmet featuring an outline of Goldy Gopher as opposed to the standard block M design.

The White House Apparently Ordered Federal Workers to Roll Out Grok ‘ASAP’

The White House appears to have instructed leaders at the General Services Administration (GSA) to add xAI’s Grok chatbot to a list of approved vendors “ASAP,” according to an email sent by agency leadership earlier this week, which WIRED obtained.

“Team: Grok/xAI needs to go back on the schedule ASAP per the WH,” states the email, sent by Josh Gruenbaum, the commissioner of the Federal Acquisition Service. “Can someone get with Carahsoft on this immediately and please confirm?” Carahsoft is a major government contractor that resells technology from third-party firms.

“Should be all of their products we had previously (3 & 4),” the email continued, seemingly referring to Grok 3 and Grok 4. The subject line of the email was “xAI add Grok-4.”

Sources say Carahsoft’s contract was modified to include xAI earlier this week. Grok 3 and Grok 4 both currently appear on GSA Advantage (an online marketplace for government agencies to buy products and services) as of Friday morning. Now, following some internal reviews, any government agency can roll Grok out to federal workers.

The White House and GSA did not respond to a request for comment from WIRED.

The email comes after a planned partnership with xAI fell apart earlier this summer following Grok’s widespread praise for Hitler and the spouting of other antisemitic beliefs on X, WIRED previously reported.

In June, employees from xAI met with GSA leadership for a two-hour brainstorming session to discuss how xAI’s Grok chatbot could be used by the government. Federal workers were surprised to see their leaders press for a contract with a company marketing an uncensored chatbot with a history of erratic behavior. In early July, Grok, which is integrated into Elon Musk’s social platform X, seemingly went off the rails and started praising Hitler. GSA leadership took Grok off the Multiple Award Schedule, which is GSA’s long-term government contracting platform, according to sources at the agency. When GSA announced buzzy partnerships with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google earlier this month, xAI wasn’t mentioned at all.

xAI is Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup. Musk, who also helms the social network X in addition to a number of other companies, played a crucial role in President Donald Trump’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He stepped back from his public-facing role at DOGE this spring, following a massive fight with the president. A number of his associates continue to work in government pushing DOGE’s cost-cutting and AI-first agenda.
