EA’s takeover, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, and “vanity mega projects”: Human Rights Watch assesses the impact of gaming’s latest controversy

by admin October 4, 2025

Earlier this week, history was made in both the world of video games and private equity. The trio of Affinity Partners, Silver Lake, and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced a plan to take EA private for $55bn. This leveraged buyout would be the largest in history and, if approved, will mean the industry giant would be a private company in 2027.

This immediately raised concerns throughout the industry. Despite a statement by EA CEO Andrew Wilson saying the company’s values would remain the same, many were concerned at the $20bn of debt the company would be saddled with. Would EA still support studios like Bioware to make the games it wants to make? Among all this, there were also concerns of a moral nature, due to the involvement of Saudi Arabia’s government in the deal.

Eurogamer spoke to Human Rights Watch’s Saudi Arabia researcher, Joey Shea, to discuss the ethical dilemma at the heart of the buyout. Human Rights Watch – which has yet to issue a comment on the deal – has comprehensively covered the ongoing human rights abuses taking place in Saudi Arabia, and how the Public Investment Fund is directly tied to such abuses.

Watch the Battlefield 6 multiplayer trailer here.Watch on YouTube

“We have found that the public investment fund has contributed to, and is responsible for, human rights abuses” states Shea. “This is a trillion dollars in Saudi state wealth that should be invested to realise the economic and social rights of Saudi citizens. We’ve found it’s been invested in vanity mega projects inside and outside of the country.

“We see this as a deliberate attempt to distract from the country’s human rights abuses […] MBS himself wields enormous power over what is effectively public funds, and he wields this power in a highly arbitrary and personalised manner, rather than the benefit of the Saudi people more broadly. Effectively, Saudi Arabia’s vast fossil fuel-derived state wealth is controlled by one person, which isn’t good for human rights, or business either.”

Saudi Arabian investment through the Public Investment fund is generally broken into two categories: investments to improve the standing of Saudi Arabia worldwide, and investments to bring foreign business and investment to Saudi Arabia itself. According to Shea, video games fall inside the former category as sports entertainment.

“Vision 2030 (a major Saudi government investment plan) is the core economic diversification plan for Saudi Arabia, and within the earliest versions of this plan it explicitly stated that these large investments in sports entertainment options was part of a strategy to enhance the reputation of the country nationally.”

After SNK was bought by Saudi Arabia, Fatal Fury City of the Wolves was used to help promote the state and its other investments. | Image credit: SNK

Some have argued that accepting Saudi Arabian investment through the PIF can be separated from the actions of its government, that no country is innocent and everything is tainted. However, according to Shea, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund is directly linked to its human rights abuses. The money used for the EA buyout may itself be attached to these acts.

Shea explains: “In a report we released last year, we documented how the PIF itself has benefited from Human Rights abuses. For example, if we go back to 2017 and the notorious corruption crackdown and the Ritz Carlton, we found that assets that were seized outside of any recognisable legal process wound up in the PIF. Your investment vehicle contains assets that were stolen – that’s a problem!

“We also found that one of those assets that were seized illegally was a company called Sky Prime aviation. This is the company that owned the planes that transferred the hit squad to Istanbul where they murdered Jamal Khashoggi. So if one of the assets your investment fund owns is committing transnational murder in a consulate… that’s pretty outrageous.

“Our call is never ‘don’t invest in Saudi Arabia, don’t invest in Saudi Arabia’. We don’t have a standing boycott. But businesses have a responsibility under the UN guiding principles of Business and Human Rights to do due diligence assessments before engaging in a business relationship, to assess whether that relationship will lead to human rights harm. If it does you should, of course, not engage in that relationship.”

Once the deal goes through, all of EA’s games will be connected to the Saudi state and its human rights abuses. | Image credit: EA

One important detail within the announcement of EA’s leveraged buyout is that it’s pending regulatory approval, which some experts believe won’t be much of a hurdle due to US president Donald Trump’s son-in-law’s involvement with Affinity Partners. When asked whether a deal like this has any chance of being stopped by US regulators, Shea had little hope due to the current political climate in the region and America’s strategic partners there, Saudi Arabia included.

“I don’t see it coming under scrutiny. I think there was a moment in 2023 before October 7th, when there was some political will from some senators in the US to scrutinise Saudi investments through the PIF in the USA. There was some hope that these investments would come under greater scrutiny rather than just for national security impacts – that’s basically the only standard to which foreign investments will be scrutinised, mostly foreign investments from China.”

“We had hoped this could be broadened to include human rights concerns, but at this point, globally, I don’t personally have that much hope.”

Eurogamer contacted EA for comment on matters regarding the private buyout from Affinity Partners, Silver Lake, and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

RDR2 modder gives NPCs memories that players are forced to watch when they die

by admin October 1, 2025

A Red Dead Redemption 2 modder has turned the game into Westworld by giving NPCs their own memories.

Rockstar’s wild west classic Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the greatest games of all time and remains a must-play for anyone waiting for GTA 6.

Like most open-world titles, Red Dead gives players a ton of freedom with how they go about completing tasks and traversing the world, adding to its already immersive gameplay.

Now, Twitch streamer ‘Blurbs’ has found a way to give the game’s numerous NPCs even more backstory through “memories” that play when they die.

Article continues after ad

While the goal is a “maximum guilt trip,” the scripts don’t exactly have the same dynamic dialogue you’d encounter playing naturally… but that’s because they were written by Twitch chat.

Red Dead Redemption 2 NPCs get memories for “maximum guilt trip”

The concept for the memory mod came from a viewer after Blurbs let fans suggest their worst ideas.

Basically, Blurbs modified the game to enter a special “cinema” mode showing NPCs in a slow-mo close-up right before he kills them.

Article continues after ad

From there, the streamer recorded a series of scenes meant to be “flashbacks” and programmed the game so it loads these “memories” when an NPC dies.

While this could, in theory, have been pretty emotional (much like Red Dead itself), Blurbs decided to get Twitch chat to write the scripts.

I modded RDR2 so that NPCs have *actual* memories you are forced to watch when they die. Maximum guilt trip.

I may have made a mistake letting Twitch Chat write the scripts however… pic.twitter.com/J7dGWdYKc9

— Blurbs (@Blurbstv) October 1, 2025

The result was a series of absurd dialogue referencing meme culture, One Piece, baseball, video games, and an assortment of other oddities.

“I may have made a mistake letting Twitch Chat write the scripts,” he admitted.

This is hardly the first time Blurbs’ Red Dead mods have gone viral. Back in August, he designed a mod that lets players throw Jack Marston like a tomahawk.

A few weeks before that, he spent three days finding a way to mod himself into the game.

Gold's Rare Red Day Allows BTC to Advance

When Could Bitcoin (BTC) Price Break New Record Highs? Watch Out for Gold

by admin October 1, 2025

Stocks printed fresh records and gold is on a tear crossing $3,900, but the last leg higher in traditional markets left bitcoin BTC$117,536.67 behind.

The largest crypto, often touted as digital gold, has been stuck in a $100,000–$120,000 range for nearly three months after setting new highs in July and August.

The lag fits a pattern. Over the past couple of years, gold and bitcoin have taken turns: when gold breaks out, bitcoin tends to consolidate; when gold cools, BTC often resumes the advance.

BTC versus gold (TradingView)

From January into April, BTC plunged about 30% while gold kicked off its next leg, rising roughly 28% to $3,500 at the height of the global tariff tantrum. Gold then stalled into August, and bitcoin took the baton, rallying about 60% from trough to peak to notch fresh records.

Bitcoin to catch up when gold tires

“Gold likes low rates and a weak economy, whereas bitcoin likes them firm,” said Charlie Morris, chief investment officer at ByteTree, in a recent report. “Because bitcoin likes a super strong economy, and low rates are associated with economic slumps.” He added that the BTC–gold relationship is loose: the 90-day correlation has averaged around 0.1 — “basically zero.”

Right now, gold is in a lockout rally toward $4,000, up about 17% across a seven-week winning streak. Bitcoin, meanwhile, is still ranging below $120,000.

If the recent rhythm holds, a pause in gold, or even a sideways drift, could be the tell for BTC’s next break out of the range and another run at records.

“The good news for bitcoin is that sooner or later, gold will get tired,” Morris said.

The second-gen Apple Watch SE drops to a record-low price ahead of Prime Day

by admin October 1, 2025

If, like me, you’re wondering how it could possibly be October already, perhaps you need a watch. Probably one with a calendar function. Strangely enough, there are some solid deals on several Apple Watch models right now ahead of Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days event. The second-gen Apple Watch SE with LTE connectivity has dropped to $189, which is a discount of $110 or 37 percent.

That’s a new record low price for this 40mm variant with a small/medium band. The discount applies to versions with an ink sport loop and denim sport band.

Apple

The Apple Watch SE from 2022 has dropped to $189 on Amazon ahead of the Prime Big Deal Days event.

$189 at Amazon

It’s worth bearing in mind that this deal is for the previous-gen model, which Apple released in 2022. The company started shipping the latest Apple Watch SE in September. That starts at $240 for a GPS and Wi-Fi model without LTE connectivity. The third-gen SE 3 is now our pick for the best budget Apple Watch. However, if you’re looking for a cheaper option for fitness tracking, at-a-glance notifications and, perhaps, quick access to a calendar, the second-gen SE is worth considering.

Several variants of the Apple Watch Series 10 are on sale on Amazon as well. This is last year’s version of the smartwatch, but it’s still plenty capable and it supports some of the same new features as the Series 11, such as sleep apnea detection and sleep scoring. You can pick one up for as little as $329.

Watch This ‘Stranger Things’ Video and and See Just How Much These Kids Have Aged

by admin October 1, 2025

Talk about a blast from the past. Just look at how much the Stranger Things cast has aged since 1983.

Kidding, just kidding. No, but really, there’s some sort of time warp happening because Netflix had Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, and Gaten Matarazzo, along with Cara Buono (who plays Wolfhard’s mom, Karen Wheeler), react to the star-making first scene. I cannot fathom how this was only nine years ago, since the original Hawkins heroes were just babies, and now they’re full-on adults. Check out the clip below released in the lead-up to the series’ final season later this year.

It’s a delight to witness Wolfhard, McLaughlin, and Matarazzo look back on that fateful Dungeons & Dragons game the night Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) disappeared. Little Mike, Lucas, and Dustin are just so pure! So unaware of just how long they would be making the rest of this show for!

In the clip, the trio shared some fun commentary about whether or not they’ve become casual D&D players since season one, and the answers are not surprising for the Gen Z stars. McLaughlin point-blank shared he hadn’t, while Matarazzo defended the game.

“I feel like it’s such a good game for actors, really, though, because it’s just like—it’s improv. It’s just like you’re playing characters, and you’re playing pretend. It’s really fun,” he said, and we get the sense that he might be a frequent player. His character is into it the most, taking the reins from Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn), the Hellfire Club’s dearly departed (and not forgotten) Dungeon Master.

Wolfhard added, “I played two small campaigns. Honestly, if you’re not the dungeon master, it’s pretty fun because all you have to do is—you just have to be committed to staying with the bit.”

It only took nine years for these boys to become adults… and occasionally D&D ambassadors, to boot. Stranger Things‘ final season will debut in two main parts on November 26 and December 25, with the final episode streaming standalone on December 31.

The Apple Watch Series 10 Is $170 Off

by admin October 1, 2025

While the Apple devout are already chasing the new Apple Watch Series 11, you and I know that a product announcements means great deals on the previous generation. You can snag a Series 10 Apple Watch with GPS and cellular data (8/10, WIRED Recommends) for just $329 from Amazon. As long as you’re OK with the 42 mm in rose gold, you’ll get one of the more premium Series 10 models.

  • Photograph: Adrienne So

The Series 10 version of the Apple Watch had a number of major improvements to key areas over the previous generation. The biggest change was the display, which is bigger and brighter with better off-angle viewing. Our reviewer Adrienne So noted that people actually asked her about the watch after seeing the more vivid faces. Despite the larger screen, this generation slims down in several dimensions, as well as cutting some weight, for an overall more comfortable experience.

If you’re a swimmer, or just like spending time by the pool, there are new water features. A temperature sensor can tell you how cold the lake is before you dive in, and a tides app can help you figure out the best time to paddle out. It all pairs nicely with Apple’s other health monitoring features, which can track fitness across a variety of activities as well as monitor your sleep.

While the battery life is basically the same as the Series 9, Apple made some improvements to the charging. We were able to fully charge the watch via the new fast charger in just about 20 minutes, which means you can use it for sleep, and then have it ready to go for your day while you get ready.

You could certainly spend more and get the newly announced Apple Watch Series 11 (9/10, WIRED Review) with better battery, and the return of the blood oxygen sensor, but if cellular is a key feature, you’ll save some bucks grabbing the older model. While the Apple Watch is one of our favorite smartwatches, it’s for iPhone users only, so Android owners will want to check out our roundup for alternative options.

Bitcoin Price to $150,000? These 5 Metrics Might Be Key to Watch

Bitcoin Price to $150,000? These 5 Metrics Might Be Key to Watch

by admin September 30, 2025

The Bitcoin (BTC) price plunged from $115,000 to $108,000 last week in a bearish move that stunned investors. However, the flagship coin is on a rebound move, climbing by over 0.60% in the last 24 hours. CryptoQuant, a crypto analytics platform, has highlighted five key metrics to watch for a bullish rally to $150,000.

Bitcoin trigger metrics to watch

According to CryptoQuant, broader market sentiments suggest that Bitcoin, which is currently moving sideways, might be consolidating for a sharp upward move. Notably, 10 billion Tether (USDT) have been minted by the stablecoin entity in the last 60 days.

This is a bullish signal as fresh USDT means more liquidity entering the market for the likely purchase of Bitcoin and other crypto assets.

Another bullish indicator is the stablecoin supply ratio (SSR), which showcases purchasing territory. For clarity, SSR compares Bitcoin’s market capitalization to the supply of stablecoins. When the SSR is low, it suggests that there is more stablecoin “buying power.” With market conditions indicating oversold conditions, it favors Bitcoin buying pressure.

Stablecoin Supply Ratio RSI Signals Buy 🔍

The Stablecoin Supply Ratio (SSR) RSI is at 21, and is ‘buy’ territory. The Stablecoin Supply Ratio (SSR) measures the buying power of stablecoins relative to Bitcoin.

— CryptoQuant.com (@cryptoquant_com) September 30, 2025

Additionally, long-term accumulators of Bitcoin have been busy. These are wallets that buy the asset and never sell, like Strategy Inc. These investors, who are stacking the digital asset, have stacked 298,000 BTC, which indicates a bullish pattern.

The increase in accumulation by these sets of investors signals that they are positive about the coin climbing higher in the market.

As of press time, Bitcoin is changing hands at $112,958.16, which represents a 0.84% increase in the last 24 hours. The coin earlier hit a peak of $114,836.62 before the slip as a result of market volatility. However, the movement suggests potential for Bitcoin to set a new price record in the coming days.

The coin, supported by rising trading volume, could soar toward the $150,000 price target. Volume has spiked by 29.08% to $62.08 billion within this time frame.

Breaking key resistance could open path to $150K

Meanwhile, CryptoQuant analysis projects that once Bitcoin is able to break out of the current price range, it will ease sell pressure. This pressure is coming from short-term holders who recently purchased BTC at around $109,775.

Furthermore, the market is anticipating a flip in the declining inter-exchange flow. Once this happens and it flips upward, new bullish momentum could trigger a spike in price toward the much anticipated price target.

Ethereum to $5,000? These Three Levels Might Be Key to Watch

Ethereum to $5,000? These Three Levels Might Be Key to Watch

by admin September 28, 2025

Ethereum, the second largest cryptocurrency, has returned to $4,000 following a drop in the week just concluded amid a decline in risk sentiment.

At the time of writing, ETH was up 0.43% in the last 24 hours to $4,008, but down 10.07% weekly.

Ethereum fell for five straight days from Sept. 20 to reach a low of $3,825, its weakest level in nearly seven weeks, before paring the drop.

The major cryptocurrency rebounded to a high of $4,071 on Friday following the release of the PCE report, regarded as the Fed’s favored inflation gauge, but this traction was short-lived.

This is as Ethereum’s momentum paused, with price showing little to no change in the last 24 hours. ETH’s price remains tightly locked between $3,974 and $4,040, with the market awaiting its next move.

Three key levels crucial to watch

While traders watch out for where ETH trends next, whether to the upside or downside, crypto analyst Ali highlights three key levels to watch for the ETH price in the event of an upside move.

Ali stated in a tweet that the three resistance levels to watch for Ethereum (ETH) are $4,158, $4,307 and $4,505, with a breach of these key levels ultimately leading ETH to the $5,000 target.

In a recent tweet, Dr Martin Hiesboeck, Uphold’s head of research, stated that confidence in Ethereum is rising. Institutional investor BitMine recently increased its stake to 2.42 million ETH, now holding over 2% of the total supply. This accumulation matches major traditional finance moves: REX Shares is launching its REX-Osprey ETH staking ETF, and Morgan Stanley is adding support for ETH trading on E*Trade, offering millions of clients direct access. Further strengthening the market, ETHZilla raised another $350 million specifically to buy more ETH.

Ethereum’s scaling efforts are also hitting milestones, with the network achieving a new record of six blobs per block, signifying heavy utilization of the data-availability layer by Layer 2s and confirming the success of the Dencun upgrade.

Switch 2 controllers and the OnePlus Watch 3 top our list of the best deals this week

by admin September 27, 2025

Nintendo’s first-party Switch 2 Pro Controller can’t be beaten when it comes to its breadth of features and comfort. But at $89.99, let’s be real, it’s way too expensive for most people. Thankfully, a controller I’ve been testing recently, which is nearly as good despite lacking a 3.5mm audio jack, is currently on sale for $40 less. The EasySMX S10, as it’s called, is available for $50.39 from EasySMX with code GETS10.

The S10 is comfortable to use for long gaming sessions, and it has features that aren’t commonly built into third-party gamepads, including amiibo support and rumble that feels like it’s in the same ballpark as Nintendo’s HD rumble. It can also remotely wake the Nintendo Switch 2, not just the original Switch, from standby.

The S10 would be easier to recommend than Nintendo’s Switch 2 Pro Controller even if they were the same price, since EasySMX’s model features accurate, power-efficient TMR joysticks, plus some satisfyingly clicky buttons and triggers (note: these are divisive, you might not like them as much as I do). But at $40 less, you don’t need to feel bad about getting this instead of Nintendo’s official gamepad. Take that leftover money and treat yourself to something nice instead.

If you’re an Android user looking for an unobtrusive Bluetooth tracker for your wallet, Ugreen just launched the FineTrack Slim Smart G. It’s just 1.7mm thick (approximately the thickness of two credit cards), letting it to sit next to your other cards without sticking out, and its built-in battery can last for up to five years. For its launch, Ugreen has knocked $2 off the $25.99 tracker, dropping it to $23.99 at Amazon.

The downside is that it can’t be charged, so you’ll need to dispose of it and buy a new tracker once those five years are up. That stinks, but its specs mean it should provide a pretty good five years of service. It features a built-in 80db alarm to help you find it via Google’s Find Hub network, after all, along with IP68 protection against dust and water. Just keep in mind that, if it’s submerged, you won’t be able to track it.

Now through October 5th, OnePlus has a few back-to-college deals up its sleeve that everyone can enjoy, whether you’re a student or not. The one that caught my eye is the 43mm OnePlus Watch 3, which is available for $269.99 ($30 off) from Amazon and OnePlus (with coupon code HARVEST). The Wear OS 5-equipped smartwatch has gone on sale before, but after a nearly month-long period when it wasn’t discounted, it’s returned to its second-best price to date.

If you’re shopping for an Android watch, we recommend including OnePlus’ latest wearable on your shortlist. Outside of Samsung’s recent Galaxy Watch 8 series, the OnePlus Watch 3 is one of the newest models available. It offers a better value than its predecessor, the OnePlus Watch 2, with updated software, a rotating crown, an enhanced GPS antenna, and a suite of new health features.

Other deals we loved from this week
