Xbox’s Big Gears Of War Online Beta Party Has A Cover Charge

by admin June 12, 2025

Get ready to be mercilessly chainsawed in half by randos rolling around the map like bowling balls, ‘cause the Gears of War: Reloaded multiplayer beta is this happening this weekend and next. It’ll be a nice dose of 2006 nostalgia hitting right in the middle of the summer showcase hangover, so given this, why isn’t Microsoft making the whole thing free for players across PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5?

How Alan Wake 2 Builds Upon The ‘Remedy-Verse’

Reloaded is a 4K remaster of the grizzly cover-based shooter originally released on Xbox 360. Making the occasion extra special is the fact that the cinematic sci-fi war epic is now coming for the first time to PlayStation. It would therefore seem like a no-brainer to make these two beta weekends free for anyone who wants to hop in and discover Gears of War’s unique (and sometimes toxic) flavor of online deathmatch for themselves. Instead, the beta will be exclusive to players who have already ponied up money.

Here’s what you need to do to qualify for Reloaded’s two-weekend, cross-platform, cross-play multiplayer beta running June 13-15 and June 20-22:

  • Pre-order Gears of War: Reloaded digitally for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam or PlayStation 5
  • Have an active Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass membership
  • Own a digital copy of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition

Note that Xbox Series X/S players won’t just need to have an active Game Pass subscription to play, they’ll need to have the more expensive Game Pass Ultimate tier. On PS5, meanwhile, players will have to have pre-ordered the entire $40 remaster. The only ones really lucking out here are those on PC or Xbox who already own the previous Ultimate Edition remaster which nets them an upgrade to Reloaded, and access to the beta, for free.

It’s a shame the entire beta isn’t free for everyone across all platforms. It would act as an invitation back into the brutal but unique world of classic Gears multiplayer, where the slow movement, snappy dodge rolls, and OP shotguns are unlike anything else in the modern shooter landscape (and still has an active community in the original trilogy). It would also be a neat moment of multiplatform camaraderie as Microsoft pushes its new post-console war, play anywhere, everything is an Xbox-approach to gaming. Instead, it’s demanding a cover charge.

“Our jobs inside the company is to run a good business,” Microsoft Gaming CEO said on the Xbox podcast at Summer Game Fest last week. “We’re accountable to Microsoft for running a good business, a healthy business that continues to grow at both top line and bottom line.” It’s hard not to see a combination of small things like this, and big things like charging $80 for The Outer Worlds 2 (which Obsidian pointed out was Microsoft’s decision), as part of a renewed focus on that growth.

“That’s kind of a foundation for us,” Spencer continued. “And what that does is it allows us to continue to invest in Xbox for our community of players and creators and that we’re doing it. It does mean we have to make trade-offs through the year on things that we’re going to invest more in, things that we’re not going to invest as much in because it is kind of we are the business that we are, but the business is having really good success.” Good enough to eventually decide to make the second beta weekend free? We’ll see.

Epic Games continues war against Fortnite cheaters, files lawsuit against another cheat developer

by admin June 12, 2025

Epic Games has announced publicly it has filed a lawsuit against an individual it alleges has developed and sold cheats for Fortnite.

This latest venture in Epic Game’s ongoing war against those who create, sell, and use cheats was announced via the company’s own Twitter account. There, the company posted:

“We filed a new lawsuit against an individual who developed and sold cheating software that helped players see through walls and auto aim. We’re also going after people who helped sell this software. Creating and selling software to help others cheat is against the rules and we’ll keep fighting to keep it out of Fortnite.”

A new Fortnite season was revealed recently. Check it out!Watch on YouTube

According to Polygon, the lawsuit has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the eastern district of North Carolina where the company is headquartered. It alleges Ediz Atas, also known as Sincey Cheats and Vanta Chearts, has been making and selling cheats since “at least January 2023”.

Epic alleges in the lawsuit that after DMCA takedowns were issued to YouTube videos featuring these cheats, “Sincey Cheats sent multiple emails to YouTube’s designated copyright agent impersonating an Epic employee and falsely claiming that Epic wanted to ‘formally reverse [its] claim of copyright infringement'” by using fake Epic Games email addresses.

Epic also claims its has issued tens of thousands of bans against Fortnite accounts that used cheats from Sincey Cheats since 2022, including over 15,000 bans on US-based Fortnite accounts.

The lawsuit is also asking for compensation for damages from five unnamed individuals who distributed these cheats over platforms like Discord and Telegram. The amount is unknown.

In case you didn’t know, Epic Games has proven especially litigious when it comes to Fortnite cheaters. In 2022 Epic forced a cheat creator to pay up in Australian court following a legal victory, donating the winnings to charity.

Epic also sued a player who used cheats during a massive multi-million dollar tournament to give back any prize money they won, and make a cathartic public apology to boot!

The company is not alone in its struggle against cheats. Activision has also been fighting against cheats, winning £11.3m in court against a Call of Duty cheat maker. Bungie has been in those trenches too, winning a $4.4m lawsuit against Destiny cheat seller Aimjunkies.

Gears of War: Reloaded is not releasing on PS5 in Japan, but Xbox or PC releases will go ahead

by admin June 11, 2025

Despite passing certification on Xbox Series and PC, Gears of War: Reloaded will not release on PS5 in Japan.

According to IGN, the game – scheduled to release on August 26 – will not be available on PS5 due to “regional rating restrictions” and “platform policies.”

“Due to regional rating restrictions and platform policies, Gears of War: Reloaded will not be released for PlayStation 5 in Japan,” Microsoft wrote in a machine-translated statement.

“Domestic players will still be able to play the game on launch day through Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Game Pass, and Steam. We deeply apologize for any inconvenience caused to players in Japan who have been waiting for the release of this game.”

It’s thought, but not confirmed, that Gears of War: Reloaded was denied release on PS5 due to the ability to slice up enemies, as Japan’s rating board, CERO, has previously taken issue with mutilation, banning both The Callisto Protocol and the Dead Space remake on consoles for that reason.

Interestingly, Gears of War: Reloaded on the Microsoft Store also doesn’t sport a CERO rating, either, but it does say it’s been classified by the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) instead. It’s not known if the remake failed to secure a CERO certificate first.

Gears of War: E-Day is coming in 2026

by admin June 9, 2025

Microsoft first revealed Gears of War: E-Day during its Xbox Games Showcase last year, and at today’s showcase it’s now putting a 2026 release window on the latest entry in the sci-fi shooter series. Developed by The Coalition, E-Day will release in a year that marks 20 years since the original Gears of War game debuted on the Xbox 360, and 25 years of Xbox.

E-Day is set 14 years before the first Gears game, and “tells the story of the first Locust emergence on Sera.” It’s being billed as an origin story, and once again stars Marcus Fenix. E-Day is the first title in the series since Gears 5 debuted in 2019.

Last month, Microsoft also announced a Gears of War remaster that also brings the franchise to PlayStation for the first time. Gears of War: Reloaded is launching on August 26th for Xbox Series X / S, PlayStation, and PC for $39.99. The remaster features 4K resolution, 120fps support, and cross-progression and cross-play for all platforms. Gears of War: Reloaded will also have two-player co-op for the campaign and 8-player multiplayer.

Xbox chief Phil Spencer confirmed the E-Day release window during the Xbox Games Showcase earlier today, and also revealed “the next Forza” is coming in 2026 too, as well as “the return of a classic that’s been with us since the beginning.” That classic may well be the Halo CE remaster I wrote about last year.

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is a “brutal” RTS launching next year

by admin June 8, 2025

If there’s still some lingering enthusiasm for HBO’s Game of Thrones in your bones, you’re in luck. The original TV show is getting yet another video game adaptation, this time in the form of Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, a real-time strategy game that’s out next year.

Annouced during this year’s Summer Game Fest showcase, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is the work of developer PlaySide and promises “ruthless free-for-all battles where trust is fleeting and power is everything”.

“Command the Great Houses in epic real-time strategy battles,” explains its newly revealed Steam page, “forge strategic alliances, or weave deceit against your rivals.” And that begins by picking your preferred faction, whether it be House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or even the Night King’s army of the dead. Each promises asymmetric strategies, alongside their own signature units and mechanics, that’ll need to be deployed wisely as War for Westeros’ real-time battles play out across a range of iconic locations.

“Deploy infantry, cavalry, siege engines, giants, and dragons to break enemy lines,” PlaySide continues. “Outplay your rivals with smart manoeuvring, inspiring hero abilities, and the ruthless instinct of a true war commander.”

Solo and multiplayer modes are also promised, and you can expect more details ahead of Game of Thrones: War for Westeros’ launch on Steam sometime next year.

Featuring likenesses drawn from the show, the new game promises the ability to “conquer the Seven Kingdoms solo, or in treacherous free-for-all multiplayer. Players are able to control the armies of House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or the army of the dead led by the Night King, and battle across the kingdoms of Westeros to gain the Iron Throne.

Game of Thrones: War For Westeros is set to release on PC in 2026.

Check out the cinematic reveal trailer below, the events of which make it clear that your war can end in a dramatically different way than what we witnessed in the TV show.

Go to war for Westeros in a new Game of Thrones RTS coming in 2026

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros | Cinematic Reveal Trailer (Summer Game Fest) – YouTube

Watch On

I never watched the Game of Thrones series on HBO because, frankly, I get my fill of political awfulness from the real world in which I live. But even without being immersed in the scene, I was surprised how quickly everyone stopped talking about it: It was like the last season rolled and everyone immediately decided to pretend the whole thing had never happened.

There’s something of a comeback happening on the videogame front, though. The action RPG Game of Thrones: Kingsroad launched on Steam in March, and tonight at the Summer Game Fest we got our first look at Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, a new RTS being developed by PlaySide Studios.

As you might expect from the title and the fact that it’s an RTS, players will take command of the armies of House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or the Night King, and go to war for control of the Iron Throne in either a singleplayer campaign or “free-for-all multiplayer.”

From the press blast:

Engaging in epic real-time strategy battles, forging strategic alliances, and weaving deceit against rival forces will be key. Each faction offers deeply asymmetric strategies, with signature heroes, armies, and mechanics forged from the brutal legacy of Westeros. Players can deploy infantry, cavalry, siege engines, giants, and dragons to break enemy lines as they work to outplay and outmaneuver rivals with inspiring hero abilities and the ruthless instincts of a true war commander.

And a handful of screens:

It’ll be very interesting to see how War for Westeros fares when it arrives. It may be a very good RTS and you can never have too many of those, but I wonder how much the Game of Thrones license really brings to the table, and whether it will attract many gamers who wouldn’t otherwise be interested in a “classic” fantasy RTS in the first place. Do we really still care that much about Jon Snow and the gang?

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

We’ll find out next year: Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is currently slated to launch sometime in 2026 and available to wishlist now on Steam.

Russia’s War On Illegal Mining Heats Up With Bitcoin Seizures

by admin June 4, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

A former electric‐grid executive in Russia has lost roughly ₽7 million (about $88,570) in Bitcoin after law enforcement agents seized his stash.

According to a press release from the Investigative Committee for the Amur Oblast, the man—once in charge of technological connection services at the Far Eastern Distribution Company—used his inside knowledge to tap the grid and run mining rigs in his own home.

He allegedly bypassed a metering device in 2024, stealing more than ₽3.5 million (around $44,334) worth of electricity to mine about 0.8414 BTC.

The operation came to light when officers from Russia’s main federal investigating body, working with the Federal Security Service, raided his property and took control of his digital wallet.

Details Of The Raid

Based on reports from the Amur branch of the Far Eastern Distribution Company, investigators tracked unusual power usage at the former executive’s residence.

They say he made an illegal connection to his employer’s grid facilities and hid the extra load from meters. When agents moved in, they found multiple mining rigs set up in his residential building. Those machines had already produced roughly 0.8414 BTC, which was valued at about ₽7 million at the time of seizure.

BTC is now trading at $105,798. Chart: TradingView

Electricity Theft And Mining

According to investigators, the man tapped into DRSC’s distribution network without permission. He avoided regular billing by rerouting power lines and tricking meters. Over time, this added up to more than ₽3.5 million in stolen electricity bills.

With that free power, he was able to mine Bitcoin in a space that looked like any other apartment. The press release noted that he used his role to both approve fake connections for others and skim electricity for himself.

In addition to crypto mining, officers discovered he had taken bribes from local business owners, who paid him to speed up approvals for power‐related documents.

Legal Hurdles And Changes

Mining or holding Bitcoin has been tricky in Russia because the cryptocurrency doesn’t have clear legal status. Based on reports, this case moved forward because a draft law—made public in April—aims to let law enforcers treat crypto assets as intangible property in criminal cases.

If that bill becomes law, courts could more easily order the seizure of Bitcoin and other digital tokens. Until then, investigators have been relying on existing anti‐theft and anti‐corruption statutes to confiscate crypto, as seen when they nabbed $8.2 million worth of crypto from a Hydra darknet operator or seized 1,032 BTC (roughly $88.5 million at today’s rates) from a former SKR investigator found guilty of taking bribes in Bitcoin.

Broader Crackdown In Russia

This arrest is just one piece of a wider effort for Russia to clamp down on illegal crypto activity. Over the past year, Russian authorities have gone after darknet markets, insider traders hiding behind crypto deals, and anyone using hacks to steal electricity for mining.

Based on reports, federal agencies believe that tapping the grid for free power has become a common trick among local miners—especially in remote regions where oversight is weaker.

How One Keto Trial Set Off a New War in the Nutrition World

by admin June 4, 2025

While the study was still in the recruitment phase, Nadolsky left the team.

Entrenched Positions

Klatt, of UC Berkeley, is extremely well-versed in nutrition research and the current online debates around cholesterol. He’s written about this study and its fallout on his personal Substack, and calls Nadolsky a friend. Klatt discussed the study with Nadolsky while it was ongoing, and many aspects concerned him.

Klatt brought up issues of undisclosed biases to the Lundquist Institute, the host of the trial, along with Dave Feldman’s “strongly vested interest” in the results of the study that was not properly disclosed, claiming he was “a conflicted party with no training in the biomedical sciences.” His email to the Institute about these issues went unanswered. “I think this study has gotten to the point of being extremely unethical,” Klatt says.

“All authors adhered to the conflicts-of-interest disclosure guidelines the journal required,” Soto-Mata says. “Our study was independently reviewed, approved, and monitored by an expert Research Ethics committee, all its recommendations were followed, and all its standards were met.”

While some researchers and physicians are tearing the study apart, or using it to show that keto can have adverse effects, Klatt doesn’t draw any strong conclusions. “People are talking past each other,” he says. Generally speaking, there are two clear camps, with one thinking the traditional lipid hypothesis holds up, and another thinking the new lipid energy model might work. Klatt puts himself in a third camp, asking: “Why are we trying to interpret this study at all?”

“I’m an editor at the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition,” Klatt says, “and I would like to believe that we would have rejected this outright without even sending it out for peer review, because it has so many obvious issues.” He is worried about people using this flawed study as proof the consensus on the risks of LDL cholesterol has been “debunked,” which it has not.

One of the study’s coauthors, Matthew Budoff, a professor of medicine at UCLA as well as an investigator at the Lundquist Institute, acknowledged in an email to WIRED that there had been “incredible scrutiny of the data on social media, which is more than expected based on my prior publications.” He noted the research team is seeking to have the paper incorporate corrections, but that this is ultimately at the discretion of the journal. A response to the Letter to the Editor from the coauthors clarifies some of the issues, he wrote.

That reply to the Letter to the Editor has now been published—and reveals that the study’s data may support the conventional position on the risk of cholesterol after all. The study’s authors share that the “pooled median change” in NCPV in the participants—the rise in the type of plaque the study was set up to investigate, but which originally wasn’t explicitly quantified in the paper—was an alarming 42.8 percent. The reply goes on to state that the study’s findings were “compatible with a causal role of ApoB in atherosclerosis”—the build-up of fat in the arteries—which they’ve “acknowledged and supported in previous publications.” The letter says that not mentioning this percentage increase in NCPV “was a sincere oversight, not intentional selective reporting.”

But this concession comes after the horse has bolted. Feldman’s hypothesis is already appearing in laypeople’s research—with the keto diet having been among the most Googled diets in recent years, and keto products a growing multibillion-dollar industry. Answering the query “What is special about Lean Mass Hyper-Responders,” ChatGPT provides the lipid energy model, Feldman’s argument against the consensus on cholesterol, among the initial explanations for why there is so much controversy and interest. There is also a Cholesterol Code documentary in the works—which covers Feldman’s personal experience and his research, including this study—which Feldman predicts will be available on a major streaming service sometime this year.
