Viral co-op game Peak was mostly made in just four weeks: “We locked in”

Breakout indie hit ‘Peak’ has been all the rage on Steam of late, and it turns out the mega-popular co-op climbing game was mostly made in just four weeks. As the developers put it, they simply “locked in.”

Every so often, a new indie game comes around that shatters expectations. From 2023’s Lethal Company to 2024’s Content Warning, and even the likes of R.E.P.O. most recently, these titles – often revolving around chaotic multiplayer situations – have blown up on the internet.

Now, the latest game to replicate that success is Peak. While at first, it caught on for the humor in its name, thousands began to realize there’s real potential in the game itself. The idea is simple. Join up with friends online and climb a mountain together. With each day, however, there’s a new mountain to scale, meaning all-new challenges to overcome.

It’s become a smash hit on Steam, reaching a peak of over 100,000 concurrent players and has quickly sold over a million copies too.

So, where did this viral success come from? Well, it turns out the developers hustled for the better part of four weeks to piece the majority of it together.

Peak was mostly made in just four weeks

Amusingly enough, the motivation behind Peak stemmed “mostly from jealousy,” as studio head Nick Kaman told PCGamer. It was actually one of those aforementioned games, Content Warning, that spurred the team at Aggro Crab on.

The studio was on the verge of releasing Another Crab’s Treasure, a charming yet ever-so-punishing underwater Soulslike that took them over three years to develop. While the game did well for the team, seeing other projects like Content Warning gave them pause.

Why spend over three years on a game for it to do decently, when “Content Warning was a much bigger success [and] one made in much less time,” as Kaman said.

LandfallWithout the success of Content Warning, we never would’ve had Peak.

Inspired by the very same trajectory, a handful of Aggro Crab developers packed their bags and traveled to Seoul. There, they plugged in their computers and well, “locked [the f**k] in for a month.

“Basically any given moment was either working on Peak or getting food while talking more about Peak,” Kaman explained. “While it was pretty intense, it was also the most fun I’ve ever had working on a game.”

Of course, the entire co-op experience wasn’t finalized in that stretch, but the majority of the game had indeed come together in the form we now see on Steam today. Evidently, their hustle paid off.

I watched some of the viral ASMR videos made with AI and I feel more confused than soothed

There’s a strawberry made of glass that someone is cutting like it’s made of jelly, then the same thing happens to several other berries and the Pokémon Charizard. A woman dips tongs into a platter of molten rock and takes a bite of the apparently delicious treat before spreading some on a waffle and taking a bite.

These aren’t a cough-syrup-induced hallucination; it’s the latest trend in ASMR videos, created with Google’s Veo 3 and other AI movie generators.

You might have seen these and other bizarre videos on your TikTok algorithm. I’m not the biggest proponent of ASMR videos and their gentle whisperers, rhythmic tapping, and other soporific audio, but I understood the appeal. I’m not so sure the AI version is just as good. These aren’t your traditional low-fi lo-fi tapping-and-brushing videos.

Google Veo is definitely the most popular choice of AI video generators for ASMR. As good as the model is at producing realistic videos (for a given value of realism in this case), it still creates videos with a sheen of artificiality, lacking the errors and imprecision that are the hallmark of human-made ASMR.

Friends of mine who are much bigger fans of ASMR claim it’s not just the sounds and voices that entice them. It’s the intimacy and immediacy that they like. One said that the ‘tingle triggers’ are there in the AI videos, but it’s just not the same.

AI ASMR

That’s not a universal opinion, though. These videos rack up millions of views. The comments are full of both excitement and confusion, with people unable to explain why they like the videos, or who are amazed how they can’t stop watching them.

Part of the appeal might be novelty. Anything new will have a fanbase at least for a little while, and Veo’s video quality is unlike anything most people have seen before. It mimics natural lighting, shadow, and realistic camera motion. Perfect glass statues of Pokémon that can be cut in half with ease, because they’re all AI-generated, are an eye-catcher for sure.

As fun as it is, I wonder if anyone seeking a pure ASMR experience will choose an AI video. The sounds may scratch that auditory itch, but I wonder how many lists of favorite ASMR videos will include them.

Not every AI trend has to make sense. Some of them very much don’t. AI ASMR may have a niche place in the overall ASMR ecosystem. Still, I don’t think the majority of people who fall asleep to sweet whispers will prefer the sound of simulated glass crunching under an invisible knife.

Beyond the obvious entertainment value, how does the Musk-Trump fallout affect the crypto space? Elon Musk, over the past few years, has become the face of Dogecoin. Therefore, it’s no surprise that DOGE is suffering the brunt of the fallout. Priced at $0.1770, DOGE has recorded a 6% drop in the past 24 hours, and has suffered a 13% plunge in the past week.

However, the recent drama has not dissuaded traders as DOGE eyes a major move as its support near $0.18 holds. According to analysts, a break out of its current rut could spark a rally toward $0.31, $0.45, or even $1.

While DOGE struggles in the market, a new dog memecoin seems to have drawn public interest. Dog memecoins are not new in crypto, in fact, these might be the most common variety of memecoins out there, with frogs being a close second. Yet, it can also be argued that despite the saturation of cute dog coins, there’s always a want for more. Amid this welcoming market, a new memecoin has entered the space: Kori. 

Kori the dog, like its predecessor, the inspiration behind the Shiba Inu memes, is an adorable little mutt that blew up on TikTok with silly antics and wholesome charm. Kori’s cute demeanor and feel-good memes put a smile on even the grumpiest faces. With over 1 billion views on TikTok and 1.7m followers, Kori has stolen hearts. And now this lovable little pup has become the icon of an up-and-coming Solana-based memecoin.

What’s most interesting about the Kori memecoin is that this new project is directly endorsed by the real team behind the Kori dog. The official Kori TikTok page has added the KORI memecoin’s contract address in its bio. This move is an industry first and is reflective of a new era of authentic meme-backed tokens.

Since its launch only a few weeks ago, KORI has surged over 700%, hitting $9m in market cap. Driven by the support from over 3k holders and coverage in Russian media and crypto news outlets, KORI is seeing explosive growth. As to whether this memecoin will reach the heights of Shiba Inu or Dogecoin, only time will tell.

If you’re a fan of Danny and Michael Philippou’s horror movies, you’re in luck. A mysterious “black marketplace” with links to Bring Her Back and Talk to Me has emerged online, and the creepiness is off the scale.

While it’s been almost two years since supernatural terror Talk to Me hit the big screen, follow-up movie Bring Her Back has been out for a mere few weeks. The new film follows a brother and sister who witness a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.

While the movie has been well-received by critics and fans alike, things have started to get creepy in real life. Almost overnight, an alleged black marketplace appeared online on June 6, 2025, claiming to be buying and selling things seen in the movies – including that cursed hand.

But it doesn’t stop there. The website boasts new footage, new “products” (if you can even call them that), and new warning that if you choose to engage, things aren’t going to be pretty.

“Evil black marketplace” with Bring Her Back and Talk to Me links emerges

If you decide to visit BlackAngelTapes.net, on your own head be it. We’ve already broken their “no shares” rule just by telling you about it, but the deeper you get, the more unhinged the site becomes.

If you’re brave enough to click through, you’ll be met with 13 (of course) listings of “cursed” or “evil” items, ranging from vials of blood to vintage malware and taped serial killer confessions. There are also multiple tapes you can watch, including a sleeping girl allegedly being possessed by a demon and a resurrection of a zombified corpse.

Among it all, you’ll find our familiar cursed hand. The listing reads, “I bought a tape off here a few months ago – these scene kids use this embalmed hand for their band’s film clip – also to try and summon Kurt and GG Allin. It backfires and one of them bites off his own tongue lol – (will sell digital rip of it DM me).”

“I want the hand – if anyone has it, just say the amount you want. Edit – Trolls DMing me get f**ked. I can tell if you’re trying to sell me some fake bulls**t.”

While the “void” lists supposed seller comments underneath each item, you can actually make an offer for any of the 13 listings on the site. What happens after… well, that’s not something I’m willing to risk my personal finances for.

There’s a genuine – and incredibly detailed – FAQ section, ranging from learning more about Satanism to how to keep possessed items safely in the home. Eagle-eyed fans will notice “Our sister site [thisisnotacult.xyz] has been taken over by something. Do NOT visit site. Do NOT contact them.”

It’s the classic call to click what you shouldn’t, and you’ll be met with grainy CCTV camera footage that will make your skin crawl. As of writing, neither of the Philippous have confirmed their involvement or if the site is actual marketing for Bring Her Back.

Meta Oversight Board Slams Parent Company Over Viral Ronaldo Deepfake

Meta’s Oversight Board has ordered the removal of a Facebook post showing an AI-manipulated video of Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazário promoting an online game.

The board said the post violated Meta’s Community Standards on fraud and spam, and criticized the company for allowing the misleading video to remain online.

“Taking the post down is consistent with Meta’s Community Standards on fraud and spam. Meta should also have rejected the content for advertisement, as its rules prohibit using the image of a famous person to bait people into engaging with an ad,” the Oversight Board said in a statement Thursday.

The Oversight Board, an independent body that reviews content moderation decisions at Facebook parent Meta, has the authority to uphold or reverse takedown decisions and can issue recommendations that the company must respond to. 

It was established in 2020 to provide accountability and transparency for Meta’s enforcement actions.

The case highlights a growing concern over AI-generated images that falsely depict people, portraying them as saying or doing things they never did. 

They are increasingly being deployed for scams, fraud, and misinformation.

In this instance, the video depicted a poorly synchronized voiceover of Ronaldo Nazário urging users to play a game called Plinko through its app, falsely promising that users could earn more than by doing common jobs in Brazil. 



The post garnered more than 600,000 views before being flagged.

But despite being reported, addressing the content was not prioritized, and it was not removed. 

The user who reported it then appealed the decision to Meta, where it was again not prioritized for human review. Finally, the user went to the Board.

Deepfakes on the rise

This is not the first time Meta has faced criticism over its handling of celebrity deepfakes.

 Last month, actress Jamie Lee Curtis confronted CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Instagram after her likeness was used in an AI-generated ad, prompting Meta to disable the ad but leave the original post online.

The Board found that only specialized teams at Meta could remove this type of content, suggesting widespread underenforcement. It urged Meta to apply its anti-fraud policies more consistently across the platform.

The decision comes amid broader legislative momentum to curb the abuse of deepfakes. 

In May, President Donald Trump signed the bipartisan Take It Down Act, mandating that platforms remove non-consensual, intimate, AI-generated images within 48 hours.

 The law responds to an uptick in deepfake pornography and image-based abuse affecting celebrities and minors.

Trump himself was targeted by a viral deepfake this week, showing him advocating for dinosaurs to guard the U.S.’ southern border.

Indie devs go viral after calling out player who claims their game is a failure

The indie game devs behind Hypercharge, a Toy Soldiers-inspired game where you play as action figures shooting each other with toy weapons, roasted someone who claimed their game is dead because it doesn’t have many players online.

Making a multiplayer-only game in 2025 is a tall order. There are so many live service games that are vying for people’s attention that it’s incredibly hard to convince people to drop the games they’re already playing and have been playing for years. Good multiplayer games getting shut down is nothing new.

This is especially true of a small dev team that doesn’t have the same sort of marketing push behind them or the ability to support a live service model robust enough to go free-to-play.

And, while Hypercharge isn’t exactly exploding in popularity in the years after release, the devs fought back against the narrative that their game is dead just because players can’t find full matches online.

Hypercharge devs push back on dead game narrative

When it comes to most live-service games out there, multiplayer is no longer accessible once servers go down. Most of the world’s most played games are on a clock that runs the risk of ending at any time if the devs decide to shut down service. That’s the reality of modern multiplayer games.

However, Hypercharge is a paid title with options to fill matches with bot opponents and play in a LAN setup. As long as the game is live on storefronts and installed on your system, it’ll be playable.

And, though it isn’t nearly as popular now as it was upon release, the devs are still proud of what they made. Someone called out Hypercharge, calling it a “failure” and claiming the devs were “lazy” and looking for a cash grab now that their game has released on PlayStation.

HyperchargeSplit screen is one of Hypercharge’s biggest selling points, bringing back couch co-op.

“Maybe there aren’t thousands of players online. But somewhere, someone’s on the couch with their kid, playing split-screen, laughing, figuring things out together, side by side. If that’s all Hypercharge ever is… that’s enough for us. Not every game is meant to be online-only.”

This tweet went viral, resulting in the dev team making a larger statement on the topic.

“We made the game we always wanted as kids. And yes, it’s cliché, but it’s true. When you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. As long as we can pay the bills, feed our families, and keep creating what we care about, then yeah, in our eyes, we’re already rich. That is what success means to us,” reads a portion of their statement.

All of Hypercharge’s cosmetics are earned in game, with their being no microtransactions

The devs claimed they didn’t go with a free-to-play model because they believe that’s not the only way to make a successful multiplayer game.

“I’m used to the comments. ‘Dead on arrival.’ ‘Free to play or not play’ Or, ‘How do you make money without some free to play business model?’ The answer is simple. You make a damn good game. Hypercharge will never bee free to play. It will never have in-game microtransactions battle passes, etc. Will we lose money doing that? Or miss out on millions of players? Maybe.

“But what we won’t lose is sleep by going against what we believe in,” the statement concludes.

Even if unintentionally, this viral saga has brought a ton of publicity to their game and has a chance of boosting player counts more than a pricy ad campaign would.

As with any coveted collectible, there’s always going to be a resell market. But recently, so many brawls have broken out at Pop Mart locations that the phenomenon has made international news. In the UK, the figures were temporarily pulled from shelves, a direct response to viral videos of fights between flippers and enthusiastic customers, not to mention employees just trying to doing their jobs. All 16 locations in the UK currently do not have the bag charms available as the company assesses how to navigate the situation, explaining to the BBC the pause is intended to “prevent any potential safety issues.”

Similarly in the U.S., the situation is also getting out of hand, and you don’t even have to leave your house to feel the frustration. It’s already been bad online with flippers setting their bots onto Pop Mart’s webpage and app. I can attest to the horrible digital experience; when I attempt to nab some online for my collection, I get crash notifications as well as getting my access limited due to button mashing too much to try to beat the bots while trying the Pop Now! gamified option to buy.

But in-person shopping is also a huge pain in the U.S., and one that’s also getting dangerous as resellers prey on collection drop events, turning them into chaotic un-fun experiences. Tense encounters in line, with scuffles breaking out during the recent Big Into Energy release, made it clear that the hostile vibes radiating off the resellers were becoming a big issue.

As one Pop Mart employee from the Century City location in Los Angeles told us, “People were getting into fights in line,” highlighting the safety concerns employees have experienced. They also shared that for the moment, their Labubu inventory would only be available for purchase online for pickup. They didn’t know when drops would become available in advance. We get it, but that approach still leaves customers to fight resellers in the digital realm.

Pop Mart is currently working to make the shopping experience for collectors better—and it has other concerns, too. The Labubu scarcity has not only have spawned a shifty flipper market, but also a huge fakes industry. “Lafufus” (faux Labubus) further confuse shoppers, sometimes tricking them into buying fakes for at least double the price of a real one. Pro-tip: if it has more or less than nine teeth, it’s a fake! But Lafufu makers are steadily getting better at fooling unsuspecting consumers.

In other words, Pop Mart may be enjoying its success, but it’s also aware of the challenges that have accompanied the sudden fame of their products. Speaking to the BBC, the company explained that “Labubu will return to physical stores in June, and we are currently working on a new release mechanism that is better structured and more equitable for everyone involved.”

I’m surely not the only one ready for the experience to improve. Getting into and participating in the new collector community Pop Mart has cultivated needs to get back to having a fun and delightful atmosphere. When I was talking to the employee at the location I visited, I had so much fun learning about the lore of not just Labubu but other characters too.

Granted, I didn’t get to walk away with the Labubu plush I wanted ,as I was not one of the lucky ones to manage to be there during a random online drop—but I did nab one of the acrylic figures from the flocked Lazy Yoga series. That Pop Mart line, as well as the mecha armor Kow Yokoyama Ma.k.series, are two that I’ve had more luck finding in store or at the Robo Mart locations.

As collectors and fans of the Labubu fantasy lore, I’m excited to be able to better take part in a more positive and enjoyable experience when getting online to buy the latest figure. Like most fans, I still don’t have a Big Into Energy Labubu. I’ve tried all three ways available to try and get one: checking online inventory (always gone), Pop Now! unboxings (button-mash till you get kicked out, yet somehow resellers don’t), or waiting and missing location’s individual social media stories notifying fans they’re online for pick-up in store.

A shopping experience separated from the angry frustration of battling it out with resellers is how it should be. Hopefully Labubu fans fans and employees can eventually get back to enjoying the community safely—without the stress of competition or, you know, the risk of bodily harm.

McDonald’s Snack Wrap: Is the Viral Food Favorite Returning on July 14?

McDonald’s is riding a viral wave. The fast-food chain’s Minecraft Happy Meals and adult Minecraft Meals hit restaurants on April 1 and sold out quickly. Diners ordering a Happy Meal these days will find a Squishmallow theme meal instead. But there’s more viral buzz about another McDonald’s product online. People are eagerly awaiting the return of Snack Wraps, a chicken-tortilla entree that’s been missing from US locations of the Golden Arches since 2020.

On April 15, McDonald’s tweeted “snack wraps 0x.14.2025,” hinting the wraps would return on the 14th of an upcoming month. This leaves fans having to check their McDonald’s mobile app or local restaurant menus on the 14th of every month, hoping the wraps will make an appearance. The wraps didn’t appear in restaurants on May 14, so now fans must check again in June, and again in July if the June date does not pan out. 

At least one Reddit users seems to think the McDonald’s Snack Wraps could return on July 14. One user wrote, “It’s July, I work for McDonald’s, they revealed the date on the employee app.”

But another person posted, “It’s not July. I work at McDonald’s corporate and can confirm.”

Neither of those posts can be confirmed.

June 14 is a Saturday, while July 14 is a Monday. Some suggest that McDonald’s would be more likely to launch a new product on a Monday than on a weekend, so if that’s true, July 14 could be the day.

A representative for McDonald’s did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Snack Wrap fever

Snack Wraps first came out in 2006, and were meant to be a chicken item that would appeal to drive-thru customers. There are different versions, but the basic one includes white-meat chicken strips known as McCrispy Strips wrapped in a flour tortilla with cheese and lettuce with either ranch, honey mustard or salsa. McCrispy Strips are a reworked version of a chicken item formerly known as Chicken Selects.

Zach Ciampa, who regularly covers new food releases under the social-media handle Snach With Zach, said there’s been an intense fanbase out there for the wraps. “Regarding McDonald’s Snack Wrap, it’s by far the most requested item I’ve ever seen my audience ask or demand to come back,” he told CNET. “Not just the most requested in recent memory, but the most requested of all time. And that’s not limited to McDonald’s.” Ciampa said the only similar fast-food items that come close to the same level of interest are Dairy Queen’s S’mores Blizzard and Taco Bell’s Caramel Apple Empanada, both of which also made recent returns.

“I’ve been covering food releases for years, and in that time, I’ve seen countless comments to the tune of ‘We don’t want this. We want the Snack Wrap,’ and, ‘Can you tell us when the Snack Wrap is coming back?'” he said. “A couple years ago, the chances of its return were pretty bleak. However, things escalated pretty quickly in late 2023 when McDonald’s did indeed announce that the Snack Wrap would return in a new form. Since then, details have slowly but surely trickled out, and the hype has steadily grown.”

While Snack Wraps left McDonald’s locations in the US back in 2020, they remained available at Canadian and UK restaurants. The current online McDonald’s Canada menu includes several tortilla-wrapped items, including ones with crispy chicken, grilled chicken, buffalo chicken and chicken with a sweet chili sauce.
