Alleged Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra fight video shows Black Panther having an Angry Cat moment in a bar

by admin September 21, 2025

Development footage of what appears to be upcoming superhero action game Marvel 1943: Rise Of Hydra has exploded upon the internet like Black Panther clawing his way into a seedy Parisian bar and flinging himself at alt-fascist soldiers in a whirlwind of kicked chairs and bursting bottles. This also being the content of said video.

Assuming the leaked goods are the Real McCoy, they suggest that the game will be a fast and furious brawler with a fair amount of environment destruction, which is probably what you’re expecting from a game with Azzuri and Steve Rogers on the poster.

The footage comes to us via MP1st, who attribute it to “a developer who worked on the game”, and say it was created between 2022 and 2023, but do not link to the portfolio that originally contained it.

They’ve also found a selection of images that show various possible Marvel 1943 environments, including a plush lamp-lit hallway, a vast cavern entrance with dangling stalactites, a bunch of building-top areas with glass conservatory roofs, and a hazy nocturnal view of searchlights over what is presumably Paris.

Assuming it’s the Genuine MacGyver, the leaked Black Panther video is very clearly WIP. The fixed camera perspective suggests that it’s an internal test, knocked together to illustrate the flow of a typical Marvel 1943 fight scene. As such, we should be careful about reading too much into it. But I have to say, I do enjoy the 5am cat energy here.

If you live with a younger feline, you’ll be familiar with that time of day when they Catch The Crazy and start zipping about, striking amateur ninjitsu poses and climbing every nearby human bodypart/piece of furniture. I’d love it if Black Panther had a Zoomies mode that caused him to spontaneously sit on Captain America’s face. I’d love it if he had a special terrain execution that consisted of hiding under the sofa and slashing people’s feet off. “D’awww,” the abbreviated sturmtruppen of Hydra would coo, clutching their bloody stumps. “What on Earth is going through his ickle head.”

Developed by Skydance New Media and published by Plaion, with former Naughty Dog scribe Amy Hennig on-board to produce and co-write, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is the story of Captain America and the Panther fighting Hydra in occupied France, though part of it is set in Wakanda. It’s inspired by the comicbook series Captain America/Black Panther: Flags of Our Fathers.

Announced in 2024, the game is slated to land in early 2026. Which is not that far away, and Plaion have shown us little of the game beyond a couple of ‘cinematic’ trailers. I’ll ask them if they have any comment on this footage, and when we can see more of the game.

Scientists have worked out why some people invert video game controls, so which side is correct?

Scientists have worked out why some people invert video game controls, so which side is correct?

by admin September 19, 2025

When you push the right controller stick forwards, do you expect a game camera to move up or down? Whether players use “normal” or “inverted” camera controls has long been a point of debate.

Now, though, it’s part of a scientific study. As reported by The Guardian, Dr Jennifer Corbett and Dr Jaap Munneke at Brunel University London initiated a study during lockdown into the neuroscience of human-computer interactions using remote subjects, speaking with players to research controller inversion.

The duo have now published their findings in their paper “Why axis inversion? Optimising interactions between users, interfaces, and visual displays in 3D environments”. And the results are all about how your brain perceives objects in 3D space.

“Many people told us that playing a flight simulator, using a certain type of console, or the first game they played were the reasons they preferred to invert or not,” said Corbett. “Many also said they switched preferences over time. We added a whole new section to the study based on all this feedback.”

Participants were given a questionnaire and tasked with experiments around spatial awareness. “They had to mentally rotate random shapes, take on the perspective of an ‘avatar’ object in a picture, determine which way something was tilted in differently tilted backgrounds, and overcome the typical ‘Simon effect’ where it’s harder to respond when a target is on the opposite v the same side of the screen as the response button,” Corbett explained.

“It turns out the most predictive out of all the factors we measured was how quickly gamers could mentally rotate things and overcome the Simon effect. The faster they were, the less likely they were to invert.”

Yet while inverted players were the slowest on the tasks, they were also more accurate.

Ultimately, while players think they choose controls based on their first exposure, it’s more likely due to your brain’s perception of objects in 3D space.

Corbett even suggested players should try the opposite way to what they’re used to. “The most surprising finding for gamers [who don’t invert] is that they might perform better if they practised with an inverted control scheme,” said Corbett. “Maybe not, but given our findings, it’s definitely worth a shot because it could dramatically improve competitive game play!”

What’s more, the research could have implications outside of gaming. “This work opened our eyes to the huge potential that optimising inversion settings has for advancing human-machine teaming,” says Corbett. “So many technologies are pairing humans with AI and other machines to augment what we can do alone. Understanding how a given individual best performs with a certain setup (controller configuration, screen placement, whether they are trying to hit a target or avoid an obstacle) can allow for much smoother interactions between humans and machines in lots of scenarios from partnering with an AI player to defeat a boss, to preventing damage to delicate internal tissue while performing a complicated laparoscopic surgery.”

Personally, inverting camera controls is the first thing I do when booting up a new game. I always presumed it’s because that’s how I learned to play as a kid – just as Corbett said – but perhaps it’s actually my brain after all.

Are you an inverter or non-inverter for gaming controls? Let us know in the comments.

Here’s Why The Era Of Video Game Remakes Is Just Getting Started

by admin September 19, 2025

I bet if you’re reading this post right now, you’ve played a remake or a remaster of an old video game at some point in the last 12 months. According to a new survey of 1,500 other players, you’re not alone. A whopping 90 percent of respondents said they’d also played a modern revival of a classic game at some point in the last year. And how could you not? More and more keep coming out all of the time.

The new data point comes from strategy and insights consultancy firm MTM, which this week published its “Remake vs Innovate: Is the past the future of gaming?” report (via Gamesindustry.biz). It interviewed 750 players in the U.S. and 750 in the UK and found the overwhelming majority not only played remakes and remasters, but also often hadn’t played the games they were based on. About 67 percent said it was their preferred way to discover older games, and 85 percent said they’d never played the originals before.

Some other results from the survey:

  • Only 26 percent of players thought remakes or remasters could be priced the same as other games or the original versions, with the rest expecting them to be cheaper.
  • About 60 percent thought 5-8 years is the ideal amount of time between versions. Only 11 percent thought 10 years or more was preferable.
  • Only 31 percent found remasters or remakes “very appealing.”

Trying to layer logic onto the gamer psyche is often a fool’s errand, but the takeaway from this one report at least appears to be that most people are actually okay with updating old games as long as they are 1) not too old and 2) sold for less. Apparently, the Last of Us Part II remaster that most of us mocked is actually exactly what some not insignificant cohort of players really want.

Why we’re about to get more remakes and remasters than ever

While MTM’s report suggests that many players aren’t outraged at the idea of getting spoon-fed old games like they’re new again, the sales success of releases like the Silent Hill 2 remake, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and Metal Gear Solid 3 Delta: Snake Eater speak for themselves. And it’s easy to see why companies would want to glom onto this opening in the market.

Remakes and remasters can be outsourced (Virtuos handled both Oblivion and Snake Eater), they help plug holes in ever-elongating release schedules (Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 are still nowhere in sight), and they offer newer studio teams a chance to familiarize themselves with a game’s design and development pipeline before jumping onto a new entry from scratch. Pulling the best-selling blockbusters of the past into the present is also one way to avoid the risks of taking a chance on a sequel or new IP.

The results aren’t always cynical, either. Nightdive’s 2023 System Shock remake was a faithful restoration of and update to an immersive sim classic that also made it playable for the first time on consoles. Few had a chance of rediscovering Persona 3 on PS2 or PSP, but last year’s remake showed a whole new generation of players why some fans love it even more than Persona 4 and 5. Remakes and remasters have given no shortage of classic RPGs that might otherwise feel borderline-archaic by today’s standards a second chance thanks to quality-of-life features that let you turn off random encounters or speed up combat.

There are already way too many new games to keep up with. Giving me more reasons to check out an old one feels increasingly like a good thing.

Amazon Prime Video joins Masters coverage for first, second round

by admin September 16, 2025

Sep 16, 2025, 10:57 AM ET

More Masters coverage, you want? More Masters coverage, you’ll get.

Amazon Prime Video is joining ESPN, CBS and Paramount+ as broadcast partners of the Masters in 2026, airing two hours of coverage — from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET — during the first and second rounds in April.

The 2026 Masters will have 27 total hours of broadcast coverage, which is 50% more than was broadcast in 2024.

“Working alongside Amazon in this capacity is an exciting opportunity for the Masters Tournament and its fans,” Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley said in a release. “We are proud of our longstanding partnerships with CBS Sports and ESPN, who have set the highest standard for broadcast coverage of the Masters. The addition of Amazon will only further our abilities to expand and enhance how the Tournament is presented and enjoyed.”

The broadcast window for Prime Video will precede ESPN’s coverage during the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday. Paramount+ and CBS will air live coverage during the final two rounds on Saturday and Sunday.

“It’s an honor for all of us to become a broadcast partner of the Masters Tournament and to provide four additional hours of coverage,” said Jay Marine, head of Prime Video for U.S. and Global Sports. “We are humbled and proud to begin our relationship with Augusta National Golf Club and cannot wait to get started.”

CBS began its coverage of the Grand Slam event in 1956. ESPN started broadcasting the first and second rounds in 2008. Paramount+ streamed two hours of coverage for the first time earlier this year.

Video game TV adaptations boost player numbers 140% on average, says new report

Video game TV adaptations boost player numbers 140% on average, says new report

by admin September 16, 2025

TV adaptations of video games drive an average player growth of almost 140%, according to new research by Ampere Analysis.

The UK analytics firm reported its findings on September 16, 2025, revealing that video game TV spin-offs deliver a more substantial boost to franchises than film adaptations.

Ampere’s Games Analytics title activity data showed that the average uplift in players following the release of a TV adaptation is 203%, compared to the 48% uplift seen with movie adaptations.

Amazon Prime’s Fallout and HBO’s The Last of Us are prime examples of the boost a TV spin-off can provide to a game franchise.

Ampere Analysis found that the release of the Fallout TV show in April 2024, which reached 100 million viewers worldwide in six months, boosted the franchise’s monthly active users by 490%, with 80% of the 14 million “activated players” playing the series for the first time.

According to the analytics firm, by contrast, Fallout 76’s June and December updates increased monthly active users by an average of 17%.

In May, Sensor Tower reported that daily active users were 225% higher for Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 in the weeks following the show’s premiere, while Fallout Shelter saw a 77% rise.

Sales also saw a boost. Fallout 3 sales rose 125%, Fallout 4 saw a 410% increase, and in-app purchases for Fallout Shelter jumped 150%.

The second season of the Fallout TV show is due to release this December.

The Last of Us franchise has also benefited greatly from its TV adaptation, which debuted in January 2023 to 4.7 million viewers.

Ampere Analysis found that, across the HBO show’s two seasons, The Last of Us’ franchise engagement increased by an average of 150%.

“Media adaptations are superchargers for the player bases of gaming franchises”

Ricardo Parsons, Ampere Analysis

By comparison, the release of The Last of Us Part 2 remastered for PS5 in January 2024 and the addition of The Last of Us Part 1 to the PS Plus catalogue increased monthly users by 70% and 29%, respectively.

Ampere Analysis noted that “Sony kept The Last of Us franchise active through a strategy of remasters and wider availability, helping retain 20% of players 180 days after the game’s peak engagement.”

Sensor Tower’s report previously found that daily active users for The Last of Us Part 1 and Part 2 rose 40% following the show’s season two premiere in April 2025.

The Last of Us TV show has been renewed for season three, but Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann has stepped down as co-showrunner to focus on other projects. He will, however, help “shepherd” the series.

Ampere Analysis’s research also found that shows with “modest popularity” also see a boost from TV spin-offs.

Netflix’s Devil May Cry series, which premiered in April 2025, boosted player numbers by 358% compared to the previous month, the findings show.

The analytics firm also noted that “perennially popular games” like Minecraft can also “grow” from media adaptations, with research finding that Minecraft’s monthly active users increased 30% with the release of A Minecraft Movie in April 2025, 54% of which were lapsed players.

“Media adaptations are superchargers for the player bases of gaming franchises,” said Ricardo Parsons, analyst at Ampere Analysis. “They attract new audiences at scale, from first-time players diving into Fallout’s wasteland to lapsed gamers returning to Minecraft.

“And unlike DLC or remasters, hit adaptations showcase these stories to a wider audience, extending their reach.

“With adaptations of Call of Duty, Life is Strange, and Dark Deception all announced recently, Ampere expects this trend to continue – creating win-wins for publishers seeking new players and studios hungry for ready-made fanbases.”

15th September video games roundup: Valve’s grip on adult games tightens as Randy Pitchford gives Borderlands 4 PC settings advice

Undertale turns 10 years old today

Undertale has nearly 150,000 “overwhelmingly positive” reviews on Steam. To say that this disarmingly simple-looking indie game has had a large impact would be an understatement.

In fact, it was one of our games of 2015. “Few games have ever touched so many people so deeply, or been so misunderstood by their critics,” wrote Richard Cobbett in his piece for us.

“It’s something harder to process – an incredibly smart, well-written and insightful RPG that’s comfortable enough to do the gaming equivalent of showing up in a tracksuit and sneakers. You look at any part of it and yes, it’s simple. Combine the pieces, and it’s special…”

It’s the sort of game that reveals itself, its humour and warmth, in the retelling, etching itself deeper in the memory with every subsequent lap.

Video of ‘Meta Ray-Ban Display’ glasses surfaces ahead of Connect

by admin September 15, 2025

Meta’s smart glasses plans were already one of the worst kept secrets, as there have been more than a year of leaks and reports about its work to add a heads-up display to the product. Now, just days before their unveiling at Connect, a promotional video of the new frames seems to have leaked.

The video, reported and reposted by UploadVR, shows the new “Meta Ray-Ban Display” frames as well as a new model of camera-enabled Oakley sunglasses. The clip mainly features the new Ray-Ban glasses, and shows a pair of black frames with clear lenses that look similar to the company’s previous Wayfarer frames.

Meta is adding two new pairs of glasses to its lineup.

(Screenshot)

The glasses also include a small display that’s able to show info like a map preview, chats with friends and information related to what you’re looking at. As reported, it also shows a dedicated wristband for the device. The video briefly shows someone swiping with their fingers in order to type out a reply to a message in a chat app.

The clip also shows a new pair of Oakley frames that don’t have a display. The sunglasses seem to be based on the company’s wraparound Sphaera frames and show a camera in the center directly over the nosepiece. That would line up with prior reporting about the glasses that suggested Meta planned to market the glasses to cyclists and other athletes.

The latest Oakley Meta glasses will have a different camera placement.

(Screenshot)

A separate promotional video of the Sphaera sunglasses also cropped up on Monday. That video more clearly shows the placement of the camera in the center of the glasses, but doesn’t reveal what, if any, new features might be arriving with the device.

UploadVR reports that both videos briefly appeared on Meta’s official YouTube channel as unlisted clips but were later removed. We’ve reached out to the company for comment. In the meantime, you can read more about the company’s new smart glasses lineup and what to expect at Connect here. Engadget will be reporting live from the event beginning September 17.

Update, September 15, 2025, 2:56PM PT: Added info about a second video showing the Oakley sunglasses.

Montage of three wireless video doorbells
Gaming Gear

I’m a smart home tech editor, and these are the 3 best wireless video doorbells that you can install in minutes

by admin September 15, 2025

Wireless video doorbells have come a long way in recent years, and many of the latest models offer super-high resolution footage, smart object detection, and extra-long battery life. They’re incredibly easy to install as well; just screw the mount to your doorframe (or stick it up using 3M tape in some cases), clip on the doorbell, and you’re ready to get going.

Not all wireless doorbells are made equal, though. Some are trickier than others to set up, some suffer from significant lag when you’re talking to a caller, and some have their best features locked behind an expensive paywall. That’s why I’ve put together this list of the three best wireless doorbells that deliver great performance and offer good value for money.

If you live in the UK, I also recommend checking out the Philips 7000 Series Video Doorbell, which can be used wirelessly and has a huge 8GB internal storage for your clips, and the super accessible Doro Hemma, which is ideal for anyone who wants to keep home security as simple as possible. Both of these are superb wireless doorbells, but aren’t currently available in the US or Australia.

If I was looking for a new wireless video doorbell for my own home, this is the one I’d choose. Not only does it capture crisp 2K video, it has dual lenses that allow it to capture great images of packages left at your door, as well as visitors calling. No more worrying about falling victim to a porch pirate.

Speaking of deliveries, the EZVIZ EP3x Pro can detect and identify both packages and people, and give you specific alerts – an extremely handy feature that with most other brands would only be available for a monthly fee, but is included free here. There’s also 32GB built-in storage, which means you don’t have to pay to store your clips online, and you’re always in control of them. During testing we really appreciated the way your clips are listed in the app, which makes it simple to find and replay a specific moment.

If all that’s not enough, the EP3x Pro also comes with an angled solar panel that dramatically extends its battery life, so it’ll keep running for longer without recharging.

There are a few limitations. It’s pretty chunky for a video doorbell, and we found that its app wasn’t always the easiest to use, but its feature set is hard to beat and it’s dropped in price significantly since its launch, making it a bargain.

Swann makes some of the best home security cameras we’ve tested here at TechRadar, and its video doorbells are superb too. The SwannBuddy4K is a particularly good example. Not only can it be used wirelessly, it also has one of the best cameras of any doorbell on the market, so you’ll never miss a detail.

When it first launched, one feature that particularly piqued my interest was the SwannBuddy4K’s ability to use AI to generate custom responses to visitors, with different tones of voice depending on how friendly (or not) you want it to be. In practice though, it was the super-sharp video quality that really impressed us here.

The ability to use the SwannBuddy4K subscription-free is also a real boon. Your videos are stored on an internal SD card, so you don’t have to pay a monthly fee to save them in the cloud for access later.

When we first reviewed this doorbell we thought it was a little on the expensive side, but its price has dropped significantly since then. When you factor in the lack of subscription fees, it becomes great value.

Ring Battery Doorbell Plus

Image 1 of 3

(Image credit: Future)(Image credit: Future)(Image credit: Future)

Ring is the biggest name in video doorbells, and it’s easy to see why – its devices are easy to install, simple to use, and work seamlessly with Amazon Alexa devices. The Ring Battery Doorbell Plus is one of its best models, with an impressive field of view (150 x 150 degrees) that allows you to see visitors from head to foot, plus any packages they leave at your door, plus a higher video resolution than your typical Ring doorbell.

It’s a piece of cake to install, and like the two models above, it can run from a rechargeable battery or be connected to existing doorbell wiring. The battery is removable, so unlike some other wireless doorbells, you don’t need to take down the whole unit when it needs more power.

During our tests we found the customizable motion-detection zones particularly useful, and appreciated the ability to set privacy areas so we wouldn’t be notified of movement on a neighbor’s property or a sidewalk.

The biggest downside of this doorbell (and any other Ring doorbell) is that you’ll need a Ring Home subscription to get the most out of it. The membership plan isn’t, strictly speaking, mandatory, but without it you’ll only be able to watch video live from your doorbell’s camera – it won’t be saved anywhere so you can watch it back later. You also won’t be able to receive doorbell alerts as calls to your phone, or get specific person, package, and vehicle alerts. For more details, see our complete guide to Ring subscriptions.

Forget Nintendo, My Arcade Atari Gamestation Go With 200+ Retro Video Games Including Pac-Man Is Now Up for Preorder on Amazon

by admin September 15, 2025

My Arcade has produced a number of miniature retro arcade cabinets supporting officially-licensed games from developers like Capcom and Sega. But now, they’ve just launched an Atari gaming handheld, the Gamestation Go, that just looks beautiful. Pre-orders have opened up earlier this week. You can head on over to Amazon to reserve yours at a price of $180.

See at Amazon

200+ Video Games

The library is impressively stacked. Over 200 video games from yester-year, spanning the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, and Atari 7800 along with Atari Arcade as well as Jaleco and PIKO platforms. Play titles like Breakout, PAC-MAN, Balls of Steel, Missile Command, Centipede, and Asteroids. They all come pre-loaded, no download necessary. It does state is has built-in Wi-Fi for easy updates, but it’s unclear if that could mean more games added at some point in the future.

Design-wise the Atari Gamestation Go looks similar to a Nintendo Switch at a glance, with controller inputs along the side of a big 7-inch display. Also, like a Nintendo Switch, you can play its games on your TV. No dock required. Just a simple HDMI cable will allow you to put these classic titles on the big screen. You’ll probably want one with some decent length though as you’ll still be using the Atari handheld as the controller. It’s battery life will grant you about four to five hours of playtime on a single charge.

The original Atari consoles were well before we established the quintessential layout and design of modern video game controllers. My Arcade’s Atari handheld looks backward to the weird oddities of these old controllers, implementing multiple options like a trak-ball and numeric keypad. You can play these Atari titles authentically to these quirky inputs you just don’t see any more.

There are also all the modern conveniences like an analog stick, D-pad, bumpers and classic A-B-X-Y gamepad buttons (Notably in Xbox’s layout with the A button at the bottom). The various buttons, sticks, and other inputs are all illuminated with SmartGlow technology to both see the inputs in the dark and, more importantly, look cool.

The price point or $180 is a little rough. That’s more than half the cost of a Nintendo Switch for a console that just plays games from the 80s that are pretty easy to get your hands on for next to nothing elsewhere. This seems like a collector novelty more than anything, but definitely a cool thing to pick up if you want to escape skill trees and battle passes for awhile.

The Atari Gamestation Go is available to pre-order at Amazon and is set to release October 31 of this year.
