Team Fortress 2 has come a long way in the nearly 20 years it’s been around, not entirely in ways that everyone would agree is better. For those who yearn for the days before hats (and bots) dominated the scene, the Team Fortress 2 Classic mod does just that.

Originally released in 2014, developer Eminoma announced plans for a Steam version earlier this year, enabled by the launch of the Team Fortress 2 SDK in February, and work seems to be coming along well: The team announced today that an open beta will get underway on October 13, alongside the start of the upcoming Steam Next Fest.

“We’re not sure if mods are normally at Next Fest, but the opportunity presented itself and we took it!” dev team member Nito wrote. “We have been working overtime for the past month to get ready for this, and I could not be more proud of the devs who have been toughing it out.”

The open beta will include “every TF2C-exclusive weapon, gamemode, and map” (except Casbah), as well as new additions including damage feedback, balance changes, and “revamped” support for Four-Team, which adds Green and Yellow to the traditional TF2 mix of Red and Blue. The game will be playable on both official servers and “a number of community servers.”

TF2 Classic has been available for years, but the shift to Steam is significant. For one thing, it adds new features like Steam achievements, and more importantly it greatly simplifies the process of running it for people like me, who might be interested in some pre-hat TF2 action now and then, but not so much that we’re interested in dealing with the headache of setting it up.

We’re also good sources of new information for the developers, as Nito said developers quite often only get feedback from people who already know TF2 Classic: “The open beta is a great chance to cut through any sampling biases and get a good look at what newcomers think. If you love what you play of the open beta, please let us know! If you don’t, please let us know even more!”

The Team Fortress 2 Classic open beta is set to run for two weeks, until October 27. To take part, you’ll need to have Team Fortress 2 installed (it’s free, so no worries there)—otherwise, just download the mod from Steam when the open beta begins and you’re set to go.

Hades 2 is finally out of Early Access and Supergiant Games has rolled out the red carpet with patch notes showing every major change as the game enters version 1.0 on PC and comes to Switch 1 and Switch 2. The true ending to Princess Melinoë’s adventure is now live, along with fresh secrets and a bevy of balancing tweaks.

Supergiant Games put Hades 2 out in Early Access back in May 2024 and it was already pretty decent. The studio’s been adding more content and fine-tuning its more ambitious scope ever since. In addition to the True Ending and Epilogue, there are also new story events, gift events, keepsakes to discover and fresh artwork and music for players to enjoy. Most of the balance changes are buffs or bug fixes. Appearance rates for resources have undergone some changes as well—all Prestige are now Kudos—and Tablet of Peace and Rod of Fishing sequences have been sped up.

“While Hades 2 spent more than four-and-a-half years in development, including about a year and a half in Early Access, it’s also the culmination of all the experience we’ve gained together as a team since Supergiant Games started back in 2009,” director Greg Kasavin wrote in the game’s Discord. “Early Access development was foundational to the entire idea of the original Hades, and proved instrumental to this latest game as well. So, from all of us, thank you for inspiring us to do our best, and we hope you enjoy your time with Hades 2.”

Opinions may vary on how well this sequel builds on the foundations of the original, but Hades 2 is an impressive achievement for a studio that’s retained all seven of its founding members and continues releasing popular indie hits without a CEO or conventional business structure. “I don’t have some kind of magical explanation for why we’ve been able to stick around for this long while some others haven’t been as fortunate,” Kasavin told SFChronicle in a new interview. “I do attribute it to the value that we place on sticking together as a team, on keeping our ambitions relatively modest. We don’t have an ambition to grow big for its own sake.”

xAI debuts a faster and more cost-effective version of Grok 4

A few months after the release of Grok 4 and an extremely problematic antisemitic meltdown of its chatbot, xAI is already trying to move on with its latest AI model. Elon Musk’s xAI announced the release of Grok 4 Fast, a faster, more efficient reasoning model compared to its recent predecessor. According to xAI, Grok 4 Fast offers similar performance to Grok 4 while using 40 percent fewer thinking tokens on average.

Along with faster results, xAI said Grok 4 Fast “results in a 98% reduction in price to achieve the same performance on frontier benchmarks as Grok 4,” whether it’s handling tasks that involve writing code or just browsing the web for quick responses. Similar to OpenAI’s GPT-5 that alternates between a smart, efficient model and a deeper reasoning model, xAI’s latest update includes a unified architecture that can transition between handling complex requests with its “reasoning” model and quick responses through its “non-reasoning model.”

In tests on LMArena, a platform that pits AI models against each other and provides side-by-side comparisons, Grok 4 Fast ranks first in search-related tasks and eighth in text-related tasks. xAI made Grok 4 Fast available for all users, including the free ones, on web, iOS and Android. However, with how competitive the LLM race is getting, it’s only a matter of time before Google releases the next-gen version of Gemini or Anthropic updates the Claude Opus model beyond the recently released 4.1 version.

The Digital Version of ‘Twilight Imperium’ Will Save You *So* Much Clean Up Time

Twilight Imperium has had a rep for endurance almost since it was first introduced. A dense tabletop experience of spacebound strategy, it’s become the face of marathon-length board gaming as players spend hours after hours dictating their space operatic maneuvers through the medium of many, many, many little tokens and cards being shuffled and passed around the board. So, good news for people who’ve always been interested but daunted by those occasionally tall tales of just what an effort it even is to get the ball rolling on a session, let alone finish a game: the whole process is about to get a lot easier, with some caveats.

This week, Asmodee and Red Square Games announced that they would be working together on the first-ever official digital edition of Twilight Imperium, based off the fourth edition of the game introduced in 2017. Although community-created ways to play Twilight Imperium online have existed for many years through platforms like Tabletop Simulator, Twilight Imperium Digital will adapt the board game experience as faithfully as possible, fully implementing the fourth-edition ruleset and its expansions as players vie for control of the galaxy, giving the experience some gamified snazz while not sacrificing the depth of strategy the tabletop game is known for.

As well as including online multiplayer, the ability to play against AI opponents (who presumably can’t complain about how long it actually takes to play a full game of Twilight Imperium when you’re hankering), and even asynchronous multiplayer options to let you play the game at your own pace, Twilight Imperium digital will offer onboarding tutorials and interactive tooltips to teach newcomers to play the game, with no worries about having to remember the myriad rules.

But perhaps most important of all to some people is that, of course, the digital version of Twilight Imperium means no more having to set up oodles of tiles, tokens, little plastic ships, and cards to even get going—and putting it all away just means closing the game. It sounds silly to anyone who’s not actually played the board game, but it cannot be overstated what a barrier even the simple act of physically preparing to play Twilight Imperium can be sometimes.

That is part of the charm of Twilight Imperium, in some ways. Even beyond the physicality of moving your fleets from one planet to another, that almost ritualistic process of having to prepare and lay out the galaxy map and make sure all your pieces are in place before you get to Twilight Imperium‘s trademark back and forth of trade, diplomacy, and military strategy—the administrative aspect is almost just another layer of that, a commitment to the process that you’re about to undertake.

But even if you do lose that process by relinquishing administration over to a video game version… just think of all the more time you’ll have to actually play Twilight Imperium!

Twilight Imperium Digital will release on PC, but while it’s currently available to wishlist on Steam, its release date is unannounced.

Pi Network reaches milestone with version 20 upgrade

Pi Network recently upgraded their blockchain protocol to a new version that is currently running on a testnet. The process is expected to gradually progress from 20 to 23 in the next few phases.

According to Pi Network advocate Dr Altcoin on X, the upgrade started for the blockchain sometime in mid-September, with many other users witnessing the change in protocol version. This September, the blockchain was upgraded from version 19 to version 20.

“This process is expected to be a gradual upgrade leading up to version 23,” said Dr Altcoin in a post that tagged the Pi account and its founders.

Although the upgrade from 19 to 20 was not officially highlighted by the Pi Core team on social media, many traders noticed. In fact, it was able to catapult the price of Pi coin (PI) by as high as 10% on the day the upgrade was made.

In a short video posted on the account’s YouTube channel much earlier on September 5, the protocol informed the community that it will be preparing to upgrade its protocol from version 19 to version 23. The upgrade will occur in phases which may require occasional system outages that will be announced ahead of time.

According to the video, the new version is meant to be a custom Pi protocol built on a base, pulling upgrades from Stellar protocol version 23 that would enable new layers of functionality and control for users of the blockchain.

In addition, the protocol upgrades will enable new functionalities including embedding Know-Your-Customer authority in the protocol, which will maintain Pi as a KYC verified blockchain while offering a more distributed community driven KYC process at the protocol level.

The protocol dubs this new process as “the decentralization of KYC authority.”

“While the native Pi KYC solutions continue to verify Pioneers, the protocol will allow KYC authorities to be assigned to other trusted entities in the future,” wrote the Pi Network in its video.

So far, the protocol has garnered massive attention from the crypto community for its peer-to-peer system. It claims to have accumulated over 14.28 million migrated KYC verified users on its platform.

Pi Network price analysis

The price of Pi Network’s token recently experienced a major breakout after phasing out of its consolidation phase. For several days, PI was trading in a tight sideways range around the $0.345 level, showing little volatility.

On September 12th, when the upgrade to version 20 was realized, momentum shifted as a sharp rally pushed prices nearly 10% higher, from around $0.345 to a peak near $0.380. However, the bullish momentum was short-lived. After hitting $0.380, sellers drove the price back down to the $0.347 level.

The retracement shows that the market lacked enough follow-up buying pressure to sustain the breakout, and many traders likely took profits after the upgrade-fuelled pump. The RSI confirms this shift, as it dropped from overbought conditions above 70 back into bearish territory below 40, indicating weakening momentum.

At press time, PI is trading at just above the previous consolidation floor around $0.348, which now acts as immediate support. If the price fails to hold up, Pi coin could fall back into the $0.340 to 0.335 zone, where buyers previously defended.

Supergiant Games have finally done The Thing, following some patch teases that’d left things in a bit of an ‘either go or get off the pot’ situation. Hades 2’s full release is nigh, with version 1.0 set to drop later this month.

I’m pleased, because the sequel to the horniest ancient Greek roguelike of all time was already very good in early access form. I’m also terrified, because it’s not like September hasn’t already had enough games to fight for my attention, between Silksong and Borderlands 4. I mean, I’ve not gotten around to playing either of those yet, because basketball, but hey.

Anyway, Hades 2 version 1.0 arrives September 25th, as announced during today’s Nintendo Direct. That showcase featured the launch trailer you can check out above, which teases the battle “beyond the underworld” which awaits Melinoë as she continues her war against Chronos, the insufferable time fellow.

Developers Supergiant have confirmed in a post on Steam that this update’ll be free so long as you already own the early access version of the game, while the current price will be staying the same if you’re buying for the first time. 1.0 also brings “cross-saves between the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions and the version here on Steam”, if you want to utterly betray your PC roots and build on your progress over on one of the Mario devices.

“Hades II is our team’s first-ever sequel, and we’ve been giving it everything we’ve got for more than four and a half years,” the devs added. “Since May of 2024, we’ve been developing in Early Access, taking feedback from our player community to try and fully realize this game’s potential. The result is the biggest game we’ve ever made, and one we hope you’ll find to be a worthy successor to its namesake.”

Our Brendy wrote the following about Hades 2 when he reviewed its initial early access version last year:

Roguelikes, I feel, don’t suffer as much as other genres from the early access path. The first Hades did it and it quickly became one of our best action games. So, I hereby grant you permission to crack through as much as this follow-up has got to offer, to get briefly obsessed, and then to put it aside for months. The piecemeal, adaptive storytelling is still there too, eschewing anything so simple as the classic three-act structure. Which, for me, makes long absences that much easier to bear. Like the game’s own shrouded Narcissus, Hades 2 is already inviting and attractive, even in its unfinished form.

Now, get out of the Melinoë, I’ve got to go remind myself how to do a Hades so my first version 1.0 run doesn’t end in embarrassing fashion after about three rooms.

Resident Evil Requiem – and not just a cloud version – is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, along with other RE Engine Resi games

At today’s Nintendo Direct, Capcom confirmed that Resident Evil 7, Village, and Requiem are coming to Nintendo Switch 2. And no, they’re not like the janky cloud version of Resi 7 that launched in Japan back in 2018, but a full-fat, Switch 2-native version. Nice.

A trailer for the title(s), running on Switch 2 hardware, was shown off during today’s presentation. It shows Requiem running on Switch 2, and demonstrates what the experience as Grace Ashcroft will feel like in your hands – when playing in either first- or third-person mode. Nerve-wracking, I’m sure. Though, this isn’t the first time Capcom has tried to get the games working on non-home consoles/PCs: there was a doomed mobile release of Resident Evil 7 that managed less than 2000 sales. Ouch.

Resident Evil 7 launched back in January 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It returned to the series’ horror roots after a number of games in the action genre, and kickstarted the ‘new’ era of Resident Evil games, all made on the RE Engine, that includes Resident Evil 2 Remake 2, Resident Evil 3 Remake, Resident Evil Village, and the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem.

Per today’s Direct, Resident Evil Biohazard and Residen Evil Village are coming to Switch 2 on February 27, the same day Resident Evil Requiem launches. It’ll hit the Nintendo hardware the same day as it will PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

It’s a good time to be a Resi fan: 22nd March 2026 marks the series’ 30th anniversary, and it looks like we’ll have plenty to celebrate in the run up to that date with older games becoming available on newer hardware, and new titles, to boot. The Honkai: Star Rail livestream just ended, and it brought us a first look at Version 3.6, and confirmed a few of the fan theories that have been going around. To begin with, 3.6 is titled Back to Earth in Evernight, and it’s going to arrive September 24.

If that title wasn’t enough of a hint, 3.6 will indeed deliver for fans of March 7th, and Dan Heng, and there’s even more great news for longtime players.

Honaki: Star Rail Version 3.6 marks the start of a new storyline that will unfold over several chapters in the future. Miss Evernight’s Era Nova project is at the centre, and there’s a lot at stake for the world of Amphoreus.

The new story sees the return of Dan Heng, who’s going back to Amphoreus to reunite with the Express Crew. Which leads us nicely into the two new characters joining the roster. Evernight is a 5-Star Ice character who follows the Path of Remembrance. Evernight, of course, is a new form of March 7th’s, one of Star Rail’s starting characters.

Evernight is designed to fight with Memosprites summons. She increases the crit damage of all Memosprites on any team she’s on. This bonus grows the more characters on the team follow the Path of Remembrance. Evernight has her own summon, Evey, which grants her Memoria when summoned. The more of that she gathers, the higher Evey’s damage output.

Her Ultimate deals damage to all enemies, and places herself and Evey in a state called Darkest Riddle, which increases both of their damage outputs for as long as it lasts.

Dan Heng • Permansor Terrae is the second playable character in 3.6. Like Evernight, this is also a new form of one of the game’s earliest characters, that being Dan Heng, of course. This evolved version (also 5-Star) of Dan Heng is post-Imbibitor Lunae, taking him further down the Path of Permanence.

Permansor Terrae is the name of his newly-unlocked power, which allows him to be a better defensive character. The way this takes form in combat is that he can pick one teammate and designate them as Bondmate, which summons a Souldragon for them.This form also grants all allies an additional Shield. Dan Heng • Permansor Terrae’s Ultimate deals damage to all enemies, and grants more Shields to the team, while enhancing the Souldragon.

Permansor Terrae may be the easier of the two new characters to get, because anyone (at Trailblaze Level 3 or above) who logs in can claim him for free. This offer is available until the end of Version 4.0.

There’s more new content worth mentioning in Version 3.6, too. Anomaly Arbitration, the high-difficulty trial, arrives alongside the update. Anomaly Arbitration is made up of three trial stages, with one final stage.

You’ll need to form a separate team for each trial stage. Clearing all stages earns you an Interference Key, a new item, alongside other rewards. MiHoYo said you can also expect more events to roll out gradually, including the seasonal Colorful Mayhem.

The other major feature in 3.6 is Main Story Replay, which does exactly what you think. You can replay any Trailblaze Mission, Trailblaze Continuance, and Companion Mission, so long as you’ve previously completed them. The feature even lets you pick the specific segments/cutscenes you want to reexperience.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: The Order of Giants DLC feels like a brief, cut down version of the main game, but an enjoyable story carries you through

After about ten minutes of running around the Vatican brandishing a biscotti like it was my own holy grail and ultimately angering a fair few fascists in the process (which in turn lead to me heroically fleeing the scene in order to find some kind of weapon – in this case, a crutch – to fight them off) I finally rediscovered my Indiana Jones and the Great Circle sea legs. Several months after finishing the main game, I was now ready to go back for a second helping thanks to its newly-released Order of Giants DLC.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: The Order of Giants

The Order of Giants kicks off when Indy opens the ‘A Mystery Begins’ Fieldwork quest and locates Father Ricci in the Great Circle’s Vatican area. The priest, along with his rather endearing parrot companion Pio, speaks of a “Nameless Crusader” believed to be a “giant” of a man who never removed his helmet. This legendary chap appears to have some connection with a secret chamber beneath the Vatican’s Casina and with Indy never being one to shy away from unravelling a good story rooted in history, he agrees to investigate for the duo (because, yes, the parrot is absolutely a team member, and I will not hear otherwise).

Looking further into this nameless and larger-than-life crusader takes Indy under the streets of Rome, as he uncovers a mystery which expands upon the lore of the Great Circle’s Nephilim order. Along with simply discovering more of the order’s story, though, Indy also takes on a number of puzzles and platforming-based excursions in the process. Oh, and of course there are also some skirmishes with yet more fascists as well as a smattering of red-robed cultists. Ooh.

Before I go too much further, let me say this right off the mark. Order of Giants doesn’t really add much new beyond story and some extra collectables. It feels more like a condensed, Vatican-flavoured microcosm of the full Great Circle game, but with an infusion of Sukhothai’s boat exploration. This DLC really should be considered a general extension to the Great Circle’s core mechanics, rather than something that will suddenly revolutionise what developer MachineGames has done previously. There are two new adventure books, for example (at least that I found), but rather than adding new skills, these books are more about buffs. Of course these are a nice boon – especially I imagine if you have not yet completed the main game – but as said, they don’t hold anything revolutionary that will mix up your Order of Giants experience.

Ok, back to it. Now while I really did enjoy the story being told in Order of Giants, in terms of gameplay progress I found it a tad predictable. The platforming sections only really relied on a few small mechanics such as whipping to ledges and pulling on chains to make your way through a predetermined route. Meanwhile, the puzzles themselves were more straightforward than I would have expected from an expansion released several months after the main game, with the likes of directing water through a specific channel, or pulling levers in the order they appeared on nearby images. They lacked a certain amount of creativity.

Then at one moment, probably about halfway through the DLC, I thought I was going to be presented with a mini boss battle. One bit in particular gave me flashbacks to one of my favourite fights against the Great Circle’s blind giant, which was so tense it had me holding my breath (along with Indy). While I wasn’t expecting a carbon copy of that exact moment, I just did not get that same sense of thrill in Order of Giants. Instead, I was soon interrupted by a cutscene that quite literally cut things short. The rest of the DLC then followed a similar formula until the final confrontation (which I will not spoil here, but in terms of story and cinematics, I will say this final showdown did make me gasp with an ‘oh daaaang!’).

Setting aside that disappointment with the action, the storytelling here is still a treat, and is really Order of Giants’ greatest strength. There were several moments during the DLC where I found myself genuinely laughing at the situation Indy had put himself in, with more than just an appreciative titter. I mean, who else could find themself stuck under a car like that and at that exact moment? As an extra optional chapter to the Great Circle’s main game, it was all certainly an enjoyable narrative experience.

I just wish there had been more gameplay variety, and more to explore above ground in Rome itself. Visually, the majority of the Order of Giants grabbed hold of a 50 shades of grey colour card and ran with it, save for some splashes of the labyrinthine underground’s murky greens and browns. Little beams of sunlight from the city above would periodically penetrate through Indy’s subdued surroundings, but when this happened I found myself looking up with a desire to see the fresh blue sky, rather than looking for clues or similar in the immediate and now more illuminated area. I spent a lot of my time during the Order of Giants feeling rather claustrophobic due to being underground and in relative darkness for such an extended period of time.

Speaking of the largely underground setting limitations, while I had so much fun picking up all sorts of makeshift weapons during my playthrough of the Great Circle, there wasn’t the same variety to be found beneath the streets of Rome. Other than a few scepter-like melee items, I mostly made my way through the DLC’s combat sections using just Indy’s whip and fists. This was fine, and at the end of the day an effective enough method, but it didn’t give me the same giddy, silly joy as whopping a baddy over the head with a fly swat. At one point during the Order of Giants, I actually used my gun. I don’t think I ever did that during my playthrough of the main game, because I was having so much fun launching mandolins and mops at my enemies at every opportunity.

As for how long the Order of Giants took me to complete, I would say I was playing for around four and a bit hours in total. I know I didn’t uncover every new artefact there was to find, but I did uncover the majority. In short, the DLC is short. It is certainly not as long as I was expecting, and felt more like an extended and quite straightforward sidequest rather than a full fat standalone expansion with new mechanics and ideas.

It all boils down to this: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: The Order of Giants is more of Indy doing Indy things. For me as a huge Indiana Jones fan – both of the Great Circle and the franchise more generally – I had a perfectly enjoyable time back with Indy, and appreciated where the story took me. But I wouldn’t go so far as to say Order of Giants is unmissable. Alas, it just didn’t really add anything to my overall experience of the main game – and given that the Great Circle was overflowing with creativity, characters, grand set pieces and so much more, that just feels like a little bit of a shame.

This No Man’s Sky Version Of The Office Is Incredible

A big new update for No Man’s Sky launched recently, adding the ability to create custom ships, but another custom creation is getting a lot of attention this week: a recreation of the office space from the popular NBC comedy The Office.

Redditor Ok_Misterpiece_9363 (via Kotaku) showed off their epic creation on Reddit this week, drawing heaps of praise in part of the very impressive attention to detail on display in the work. All the basics are recreated, of course, like the general layout of the office and the desks. The downstairs warehouse is there, too.

But this user-created space really shines with the finer points, like two chairs on the roof to signify where Jim and Pam watched fireworks together, along with the snowman-like sculptures in the parking lot where Jim was terrorized by Dwight.

It also includes a radar speed sign outside and multiple people standing around it, mirroring that time Michael ran a humanly impossible 31 mph. These smaller details aren’t in the flyover video embedded below, but can be found in the creation itself and shared by the creator in comments posted on Reddit.

This is just the latest example of the immense creativity of No Man’s Sky players, and you don’t have to look hard to find more. Game creator Sean Murray highlighted some of his favorite No Man’s Sky custom ship builds this week, including a ship modeled after Thomas the Tank engine and even himself.

As for The Office, the show’s spin-off series The Paper is out now on Peacock. The show follows the same in-universe documentary crew that made The Office, but this time they’re making a documentary about a struggling newspaper and the efforts to revitalize it. The show stars Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore, all episodes are out now, and a second season has already been ordered.
