Richards saves the day for the USMNT, but questions remain

by admin June 20, 2025

AUSTIN, Texas — The first half was a brutal watch for those sitting in the stands at a half-full Q2 Stadium. Battling with a stiflingly humid 96-degree evening, the U.S. men’s national team were locked at 0-0 against an organized Saudi Arabia team in their second Gold Cup group stage match.

Sluggish, lackluster, and lacking any dynamism, head coach Mauricio Pochettino looked exasperated at his wilting squad — a stark contrast from the vibe in Sunday’s 5-0 thrashing of Trinidad and Tobago in their tournament opener.

“We want to win, but at the same time it’s to help the players to perform and to knock [on] the door and say, we can perform for the national team and we can be involved in the next World Cup,” stated Pochettino after the previous victory, looking fully confident for the upcoming match against Saudi Arabia.

“That is what I expect. Win, and the players really believe that they are having the opportunity…[to] fight for a place in the World Cup.”

With plenty of starters and key figures missing from this summer’s roster, the narrative was set for an up-and-coming attacking name or fringe option (like a Diego Luna) to save the day against Saudi Arabia. Instead, the hero of the night — someone who’s well-versed in the Texas heat — was defender Chris Richards.

Diving into a cross from Sebastian Berhalter off a free kick in the 63rd minute, the FA Cup winner (with Crystal Palace) converted to give the USMNT a 1-0 lead they would not let slip, booking their spot in the Gold Cup quarterfinals with two wins from two matches to open the competition.

Celebrating the goal with his arms wide and seeming to glide better than any member of the attack, Richards was not only the savior with his goal but also served as a reminder of the resilience that this USMNT roster — missing plenty of key players this summer — will need to have at the Gold Cup.

Let’s not forget the best play of the first half either, which also involved Richards. Long before his goal, Richards provided a defensive intervention in the 31st minute that was just as worthy of his scoring effort. His stats, aside from the goal itself, also speak for themselves. Five clearances, two blocked shots, a 100% success rate in aerial duels, 95% accuracy rate with his 74 passes — the list continues for what will go down as a memorable night for the 25-year-old, who played academy soccer just across the state with FC Dallas.

But that’s the good news for the USMNT. The bad news? Pochettino can’t exactly rely on one of his central defenders to save the team in every game.

As superb as Richards was on Thursday, the opposite could be said of most of the rest of the XI that still has much to prove in this Gold Cup. Going back to what Pochettino had said earlier, the hope was to not only succeed in the international competition, but to also find more roster depth for the World Cup that begins in 12 months.

In a summer that’s missing marquee headliners like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Timothy Weah, Giovanni Reyna, Antonee Robinson, Yunus Musah and Sergiño Dest (for a variety of reasons), the hope was that after last Sunday’s eye-catching 5-0 win, more would continue to step up in the second group stage match.

Richards, a likely starter in a best XI, is far from that. While plenty of praise should be deservedly given to the standout player on Thursday, who has officially helped book a place in the knockout round, the U.S. didn’t really gain much when it came to new faces being able to make their mark and challenge the missing starters.

And if that continues, they may not last much longer beyond the quarterfinals.

Looking at other title-contenders like Canada and Mexico, Pochettino and the rest of Richards’ teammates can’t afford to be as predictable and lethargic as they were on Thursday. They’ll have one last tune-up with a group stage closer against Haiti on Sunday, but after that, the true fiery tests will emerge that far exceed the sweltering conditions in Austin.

But at the very least, against Saudi Arabia in a result that has avoided an early Gold Cup catastrophe, fans of the USMNT can rest easy knowing that Richards was able to safely put out the fire.

Malik Tillman shines as USMNT secures a desperately needed win

by admin June 16, 2025

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A United States men’s national team shorn of some of their biggest stars kicked off their 2025 Gold Cup run with a 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago at PayPal Park on Sunday.

Led by a brace from Malik Tillman, the U.S. was dynamic as it consistently tested the visitors, eventually taking a 3-0 lead by halftime that included a goal from Patrick Agyemang. In the second half, Trinidad and Tobago looked more lively, but it was the U.S.’ Brenden Aaronson and Haji Wright who added two more goals after the 81st minute.

With three points in hand after their tournament opener, manager Mauricio Pochettino and his men will now face Saudi Arabia on June 5. As for Trinidad and Tobago, they’ll seek to bounce back against Haiti in their next group stage match.

Here are the three biggest talking points from Sunday’s win.

1. Tillman puts on show with goals, flair

It was an impressive 90-plus minutes for the 23-year-old attacking midfielder.

Tillman not only stole the spotlight with his two first-half goals, but also with his clever and eye-catching one-touch passes that seemed to catch every opposing player off guard. With the backdrop of a sunny California day, the PSV Eindhoven man seemed to be genuinely enjoying himself as he linked up well with members of the attack like Jack McGlynn and Diego Luna, who provided assists for the midfielder.

For fans of the USMNT, it was a sign of relief to see the player who has yet to consistently perform for country in the same manner that he has stepped up for his club. If he can maintain the form that has made him recognized as one of the top players in the Eredivisie, there’s no reason the USMNT can’t find success at the Gold Cup.

2. Pochettino finds much-needed chemistry with XI, subs

Credit where credit is due.

After stumbling to two defeats in his recent tune-up matches, Pochettino turned his side around with a well-balanced XI that had no real issues against Trinidad and Tobago. Moving forward, rapid ball progression and unpredictable movements were key within a first half that cemented their lead. In the midfield, Luca de la Torre marshaled the heart of the pitch, and in support defensively, captain Tim Ream thrived as a reliable leader.

By the second half, Pochettino’s substitutes seemed just as eager to make their mark. Through a couple of assists from Max Arfsten to goal-scoring options off the bench Aaronson and Wright, the U.S. was able to cement a near-perfect performance.

Obviously, this should be taken with a grain of salt against the Concacaf minnows that have a 0W-0D-5L record all time against the U.S. in the Gold Cup. Nonetheless, that won’t matter to the coach that has just stopped a four-game losing streak as the U.S. seeks a title this summer.

3. Local kid Luna shines in front of family and friends

Playing not too far from his hometown, Sunnyvale, Luna was all gas and no brakes on Sunday.

Easily the most energetic member of the U.S. XI, the 21-year-old covered an immense amount of ground as he not only stole a ball that led to a Tillman goal, but also provided an assist for Agyemang — which for all intents and purposes should be recognized as a Luna goal that was deflected by Agyemang.

Heading into the match, Luna told media that he would have 30 family and friends at the Gold Cup opener. If he were given as many tickets as wanted? “[They] could fill half the stadium,” the midfielder said with a smirk.

Recognized as a scrappy but hungry up-and-coming player, this could be the start of a memorable tournament for the Real Salt Lake star that was galvanized by his hometown. The performance was a positive sign for the California kid, and for the USMNT this summer.

USMNT ease pressure with big win, but tougher tests ahead

SAN JOSE, Calif. — After a turbulent run-up to this summer’s Gold Cup, the U.S. men’s national team can breathe again.

In the throes of a four-game, home losing streak under new-ish manager Mauricio Pochettino, the USMNT began the Gold Cup Sunday with a resounding 5-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago. The scoreline was by no means a fluke, either. The U.S. dominated from start to finish, and received a pair of goals from Malik Tillman and another from Patrick Agyemang when he deflected in Diego Luna’s goal-bound effort. Substitutes Brenden Aaronson and Haji Wright rounded out the scoring in the final 10 minutes, padding the USMNT’s goal differential in the process.

It made for the kind of comfortable win that seemed beyond this group of players just last Tuesday following their 4-0 humbling against Switzerland. But the funk surrounding the USMNT went deeper than that result.

Just how low had the U.S. sunk? The USMNT hadn’t lost four consecutive games at home since 1988, when it lost two games each to Chile and Ecuador. That was at the tail end of a 40-year barren spell between World Cup appearances for the USMNT. The current streak also involved almost the entirety of the U.S. player pool from stars to second-teamers. It couldn’t entirely be blamed on youth.

Then there was the off-field drama. Among the more dominant storylines surrounding the side was Christian Pulisic’s decision to take the summer off and not play in the Gold Cup, which resulted in a chorus of criticism from fans as well as former U.S. internationals like Landon Donovan.

Pulisic’s father, Mark, then came to his son’s defense with the help of ChatGPT. That was followed by Pulisic saying he didn’t understand manager Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to turn down his offer to play in two friendlies and bypass the Gold Cup, to which Pochettino reminded the sometime U.S. captain that he is the one in charge, not the players.

The only way for the USMNT to really change the conversation was by winning. It didn’t really matter that the victory came over the 100th-ranked team in the world — one shorn of key forward Levi García who, in an only-in-Concacaf move, picked this weekend to get married. (He’ll be back for T&T’s remaining games.) This youthful side, with seven starters having less than seven caps entering the match, needed to start building a foundation somehow, and they did precisely that.

“I think [Sunday’s win] is about [congratulating] them and I think the first half there’s a lot of positive things, that we need to keep evolving in different areas,” said Pochettino. “But I think overall it was a good game and three points. [It’s] important to keep working.

“Nothing is done, but yes, to feel the victory and being more positive in the next few days, I think it’s important to grow that confidence in between us.”

It helped that the more veteran elements of the U.S. lineup provided the required platform for success. Center backs Tim Ream and Chris Richards gave outside backs Alex Freeman and Max Arfsten the security to perform their two-way roles on offense and defense with confidence, Arfsten in particular pushing higher up the field. Luca de la Torre provided stability to Sebastian Berhalter in midfield, while Tillman led the attack with two goals, allowing Luna to buzz around defensively and provide two assists, with Jack McGlynn making attacking contributions as well.

Granted, it helps that the U.S. was playing T&T and not Switzerland but scaling the rock face is a lot easier when the handholds are within reach. It will make for a greater level of confidence when the tougher moments arrive, and could apply to both team veterans and youngsters alike.

For Tillman this kind of performance has been a long time coming, so much so that teammate Chris Richards was shocked that the two goals were Tillman’s first with the national team. But more is being asked of the PSV attacker in this environment than in previous camps with the national team. He’s as soft-spoken as they come, but is ready to take on a bigger role.

“I’m quite confident. I had a good season at PSV,” said Tillman, who notched 16 goals and five assists for his Dutch team in 2024-25 (34 games, all competitions). “I’ve been here quite some time now. So yeah, I just take the responsibility. I like to take it and try to show it to everyone else.”

That dynamic between youth and experience was also visible through a more unsung contribution deeper in midfield. Tyler Adams was out with a foot injury and Johnny Cardoso was sidelined due to an illness, which meant Pochettino had to mine the depth chart/ In this instance he opted for De la Torre and Berhalter — the latter sat in a deeper role, allowing de la Torre to sniff out opportunities while also tracking back when needed.

Overall the combination showed promise, and is the latest sign that De la Torre is another player who is making an impression on Pochettino. The San Diego FC midfielder has long been a performer that knits the attack together in the middle third. But in this case, he’s picked his moments to push further up field when the situation demands it.

Keller wonders why USMNT has so much disconnect

Kasey Keller breaks down the situation between Christian Pulisic and Mauricio Pochettino, in which Pochettino said Pulisic isn’t allowed to dictate games he plays in.

Pochettino liked what he saw out of both players, and is pleased that another midfield combination is emerging.

“I think the football relationship between Luca and [Sebastian], it was fantastic and they controlled the game,” said Pochettino. “They played really well. I am so happy. They both show that in that position they can fit very well.

“Of course we didn’t have the help of Tyler and Johnny, but this is a good thing — a period of opportunity to see [the other two] players. But sometimes [they] surprise you and say, ‘Okay, they take the opportunity,’ and that is good because the competition is going to be higher now.”

Luna, for one, felt the presence of his veteran teammates, as well as the love of 30 friends and family members in the stands.

“It allows me to get the ball and combine,” Luna said about playing with Tillman and de la Torre. “And then have guys that have experience and have been in tough moments, be there and help along the way. [Having] good players around you always allows you to be more confident and have trust within the team.”

Luna’s two-assist performance, including a steal and feed to Tillman for the USMNT’s second goal, was another step forward for the native of nearby Sunnyvale, Calif. The bear hug he got from Pochettino after being substituted in the 74th minute showed his continued ascendency.

The extent to which this mix of youth and experience can move forward will get its next test in four days against Saudi Arabia in Austin, Tex. That is bound to be a much tougher assignment than Sunday’s match. But for now, the clouds have parted a bit, and the hope is that the coming forecast for the USMNT involves even more sunshine.
