Roblox continues efforts for child safety by expanding age estimation to all users by end of the year

Roblox has announced it will expand its age estimation requirement to all users of the platform who access its communication features by the end of the year.


Back in July, the platform introduced new safety features, including an AI used to estimate a user’s age through video selfie. Now, in a new statement, the company plans to roll out age verification for all users, through facial age estimation, ID age verification, and verified parental consent.


Roblox also plans to limit communication between adults and minors, unless they know each other in the real world.


“These added layers of protection will help provide users with access to developmentally appropriate features and content,” reads the statement from chief safety officer Matt Kaufman. “We hope this move sets a standard that other gaming, social media, and communication platforms follow.”


In addition to age estimation, Roblox has made a number of other advancements in its safety features:

  • Introducing Trusted Connections, as per its previous update, to safeguard communication
  • Using its open-source AI system Roblox Sentinel to detect early signs of child endangerment
  • Improving voice and text filters
  • Rolling out new technology to detect specific servers where large numbers of users are breaking rules
  • Refining its avatar detection model to scan for player characters breaking rules


Since January 2025, Roblox has shipped over a hundred safety initiatives in an effort to prove its commitment to child safety.


This is in response to numerous reports of questionable safety, for which Roblox has long been criticised.

OpenAI has announced that it’s making its Projects feature available to free users of ChatGPT. Projects let you organize chats with the company’s AI assistant around a specific subject, and were previously one of several privileges only enjoyed by paid subscribers.

While on some level Projects are glorified folders for ChatGPT conversations, the ability to set custom instructions for how the AI responds or limit what information and files it can reference, makes the feature a useful option for power users. As part of this rollout, OpenAI is also increasing the number of files that can be added to a project for ChatGPT to reference. Free users can upload five, Plus subscribers can upload 25 and Pro subscribers can upload 40. Whether you pay for ChatGPT or not, you’ll also be able to customize the color and icon for your project, too.

OpenAI has made a habit of slowly trickling down paid features to its free users over the last few years. Things like Deep Research and ChatGPT Voice started off as exclusives for the company’s subscribers before becoming available to everyone. Offering a formerly premium feature with limits is itself a way to get free customers to become paid ones. OpenAI’s decision to make the recently released GPT-5 model available to everyone at launch, but with harsher limits on how many times free users can use it follows a similar logic.

Projects are available for free users on the web and in the ChatGPT app for Android. OpenAI says the iOS ChatGPT app will receive the feature “over the coming days.”

TikTok users will soon be able to send voice notes, images and videos in chats

TikTok is taking another step towards becoming more than just a platform for infinitely scrolling through short videos. The social media app told TechCrunch that its users will soon be able to send voice notes, images and videos in direct messages or group chats. According to a TikTok spokesperson, these features will roll out in the next few weeks.

As voice messaging has risen in popularity, TikTok will embrace the trend but is capping the length of its voice notes to one minute. For images and videos, users will be able to send up to nine images or videos, taken from their phone’s camera app or library, in a DM or group chat, according to TechCrunch. The report added that there will still be guardrails with this new chat feature, including not being able to send an image or video as the first message to another user. This new restriction adds to TikTok’s current rules that only allow registered users who are at least 16 years old to use its messaging feature. TikTok is also giving users who are older than 18 the ability to toggle on or off an existing feature that automatically detects and blocks images that have nudity in chats for users between 16 and 18 years old.

Other messaging apps like Messenger and Snapchat already allow their users to send voice notes or media, but TikTok is slowly catching up with the competition. Last year, TikTok added group chats that allow up to 32 people. More recently, TikTok took a page out of X and Meta’s book by adding the Footnotes feature in April, which works similarly to Community Notes.

Battlefield 6 dev says “a significant number” of users played the game below the minimum recommended specs, as EA points to the importance of weaker hardware

A “substantial number” of Battlefield 6 open beta players were playing on or around the minimum recommended specs, according to technical director Christian Buhl.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Bulh broke down some user data for the initial wave of PC players who hopped into the game earlier this month, stating that of the “millions of players” who were jumping in, a sizable portion of them were doing so on lower-end hardware.

Speaking about some of the lengths Battlefield Studios and EA went to to ensure the game was playable by those on older setups, Buhl stated: “We built maps, and had to go to our artists and tech artists to adjust these maps so they were more performant. We’ve put in a lot of effort across the board to make sure these performance targets were set, and whether you’re on min spec or ultra spec you’re going to get the experience we’re targeting.”

When asked how important it is to serve minimum spec players at a time when PC hardware is getting more expensive, due to bloated prices or general economic challenges right now, Buhl responded by saying: “Min spec is certainly one of our most important specs […] it’s super important from both a commercial and business perspective – we want as many people as possible playing the game.”

Buhl continued with an anecdote from earlier in the game’s development: “We did a lot of analysis, we did tests on the game on a wide range of hardware above and below our minimum and recommended specs. We figured out what we can hit, what we need to hit from a business perspective, and that was to capture a wide audience on PC. It’s been super critical.”

When asked what percentage of players were playing at or around that min spec, Buhl could not recall the exact number, dubbing it a “meaningful percentage”. He also noted a number of players below the minimum spec, emphasizing the existence of this group.

In a follow up email after the interview, EA PR would not provide the exact number, pointing to Buhl’s prior statement that it was a “substantial number” of players

The current state of affordable computing in the USA, Battlefield 6’s primary market, is one of turmoil. Not only has a cost-of-living crisis made the price tag on high end hardware unpalatable for a sizable number of gaming enthusiasts, ongoing political policy has had a drastic impact on international trade.

Buhl also spoke to Eurogamer about the anti-cheat used in Battlefield 6, it’s ability to curb a sizable portion of cheaters during the betas, and the reality that some players weren’t able to play due to Secure Boot requirements. Nonetheless, this beta proved exceptionally popular, taking the title as most popular Battlefield beta of all time.

Steam Now Requiring Users To Verify Age In The UK

Valve’s extremely popular PC gaming store Steam is now requiring users in the United Kingdom to verify their age using a credit card. This is a direct result of the UK’s controversial Online Safety Act.

As of August 29, as spotted by Eurogamer, it looks like Valve is now requiring that all users in the United Kingdom verify how old they are before they will be able to access mature video games. Valve has also updated its official Steam Support website with new information about age verification, telling UK users that “in order to access Steam store pages for mature content games,” they’ll need to go through an “opt-in process” that requires age verification via credit card. Going through this process will “trigger a £0 authorization” on the card to check if it’s active and real.

Valve says that as long as the credit card stored on the Steam account is valid, the account is considered “age verified.” So you should only have to do this once. Hopefully.

According to the updated Steam Support website, Valve “reviewed” all age verification methods and determined that using a credit card preserved “the maximum degree of user privacy” compared to some other sites and services that use AI-powered facial scanning tech.

“The data processed in the verification process is identical to that of the millions of other Steam users who make purchases or store their payment details for convenience,” explained Valve on the website. “The verification process therefore provides no information about a user’s content preferences to payment providers or other third parties. Valve handles the verification process using its own internal payment processing system, which is independently certified under the PCI-DSS standard.”

Also on the site, when explaining why this new verification process is being forced upon users, Valve directly and politely lays the blame on the UK’s new online safety laws and Ofcom, the nation’s independent regulator for online safety.

Valve isn’t the first video game company to run into issues with the UK’s Online Safety Act, which has placed large, controversial restrictions and regulations on how people under 18 can access the internet. In July, Xbox began rolling out its own age verification process in the United Kingdom. Sony is “rolling out” an age verification process in the  UK, too.

Are you from the UK and partial to risque adult Steam games, such as Amarillo’s Butt Slapper – the Dark Souls of Butt Slapping – or the timelessly iconic MILFs of Sunville? Bad! Naughty! GO DIRECTLY TO BED. Unless you have a valid credit card. Steam have begun rolling out a requirement for all UK-based users to verify their ages, if they wish to access store pages for games rated mature. According to reports, debit cards are acceptable too.

The regulation follows the passing of the UK’s Online Safety Act, which now requires a host of online platforms to impose age verification systems, so as to protect younger people from pornography (among other things). I will offer no further comment on the OSA at this stage – it’s after 2pm on Friday, which is far too late in the week to have Opinions – but I’m relieved to discover that I can still google images of donkey willies on a work PC. Eurogamer’s Ed Nightingale has a fuller write-up, if you’re interested.

Valve have a Steam blog up, which explains the process for age verification and the need for a credit card in particular.

“In the UK, Ofcom is the independent regulator for online safety. Ofcom’s guidance on the OSA states that one highly effective age assurance measure is credit card checks,” it reads. “This is because, in the UK, an individual must be at least 18 years of age to obtain a credit card, therefore credit card issuers are obliged to verify the age of an applicant before providing them with a credit card.

“Having the credit card stored as a payment method acts as an additional deterrent against circumventing age verification by sharing a single Steam user account among multiple persons,” the post continues.

According to the Redditors who spotted all this earlier today (ta, VGC), debit cards appear to be acceptable at least for the time being. Which is good, because I don’t have a credit card, and I’d sure hate to be unable to buy *googles random adult games again* “Ideology In Friction”? I didn’t know Althusser made a porno.

Valve have had a busy few months in terms of adult-rated controversy. As you’re hopefully very well aware, given that we wouldn’t shut up about it, they’ve changed Steam’s regulations to give banks and credit card networks a say on the definition of acceptable NSFW games. A bunch of games have been delisted as a consequence. In connection to all that, Paypal recently pulled support for Steam purchases in certain countries at the behest of one of their acquiring banks.

Steam users in the UK must now verify their age in order to access store pages for games with mature content, as required by the Online Safety Act.

Valve has released instructions for UK users to opt in using credit card details, which will trigger a £0 authorisation. In the UK, you must be at least 18 years of age to obtain a credit card.


“Having the credit card stored as a payment method acts as an additional deterrent against circumventing age verification by sharing a single Steam user account among multiple persons,” the instructions read.


Valve stated this process “preserves the maximum degree of user privacy” in comparison to other age assurance mechanisms. For instance, another mechanism would be using AI to visually identify if a user is over 18.


“The data processed in the verification process is identical to that of the millions of other Steam users who make purchases or store their payment details for convenience,” Valve continued. “The verification process therefore provides no information about a user’s content preferences to payment providers or other third parties.”


This requirement on Steam comes as a result of the UK’s new Online Safety Act, which is aimed at making the internet safer for children, but regulator Ofcom now requires age verification across all sites and platforms with adult content.

Valve introduces age verification for UK Steam users

Valve now requires Steam users in the UK to verify their age in order to access mature content on the platform.

As reported by VGC, the age verification feature went into effect on August 29, 2025, in compliance with the UK Online Safety Act (OSA), and requires Steam users to “explicitly opt-in” if they wish to access Steam store pages for mature content games or their associated community hubs.

In a Steam Support blog post, Valve explained that this opt-in process requires users to verify their age by logging into their Steam account and adding a valid credit card to their account.

“If the process is successful, you can now choose to add previously unavailable mature content types on the Store Preferences page,” Valve said in the post.

According to Valve, the Steam account is then considered “age verified” for as long as the credit card is stored on it.

“In the UK, Ofcom is the independent regulator for online safety,” Valve explained in its post. “Ofcom’s guidance on the OSA states that one highly effective age assurance measure is credit card checks.

“This is because, in the UK, an individual must be at least 18 years of age to obtain a credit card, therefore credit card issuers are obliged to verify the age of an applicant before providing them with a credit card.

“Having the credit card stored as a payment method acts as an additional deterrent against circumventing age verification by sharing a single Steam user account among multiple persons.”

The UK Online Safety Act came into effect on July 25, 2025, and states that “services who have users in the UK need to be safe by design, and have a higher standard of protection for children than adults, whilst providing transparency and accountability in relation to those services.”

Video game companies are legally obliged to comply with these new laws, meaning Valve isn’t the only one having to implement age verification for its UK users.

In July, Microsoft began rolling out age verification to UK Xbox users. Age verification for UK Xbox users is currently optional, but starting early 2026, it will be required for those with adult accounts to access the platform’s full range of social features, including voice chat and messaging.

US Users Coming Back to Binance? Not So Fast

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has issued a staff advisory that aims to clarify how foreign boards of trade (FBOTs) can interact with US-based clients in a compliant manner. 

For several years, a lot of American projects had been forced to move offshore due to a rather hostile regulatory environment. Now, the CFTC wants to welcome them back under a proper regulatory framework. 

Acting Chair Caroline Pham, who is reportedly on track to join cryptocurrency platform Moonpay, is framing this as the process of onshoring cryptocurrency activity.

Foreign exchanges could potentially start serving US customers without setting up local entities if they are licensed under a compatible regulatory regime.  

Are Americans actually coming back to Binance? 

Several prominent social media accounts, as well as some media outlets, have started circulating oversimplified and misleading headlines about such massive cryptocurrency trading platforms as Binance and OKX being able to welcome US traders.

However, the CFTC advisory does not mean that this will necessarily be the case since there are still strict compliance requirements for foreign boards of trade.  

As some have noted, the main takeaway here is that the CFTC wants to give American cryptocurrency builders a way back to US soil since the advisory is specifically targeted at them.

This headline is misleading. The actual CFTC press release doesn’t say “Binance” or “offshore crypto exchanges” once.

In fact, the takeaway is that the CFTC wants to give Americans that went offshore to build crypto products a way back to US soil.

“…American companies that were forced to set up shop in foreign jurisdictions to facilitate crypto asset trading now have a path back to U.S. markets,” the staff advisory said. 

Hence, it is pretty clear that offshore exchanges will not be just granted blanket access. 

Binance banning US users 

Binance started banning US users around June 2019 due to heightened regulatory scrutiny. 

The top exchange has since faced numerous accusations of trying to circumvent such restrictions. 

In fact, the CFTC sued the trading giant in 2023, accusing it of luring in US customers. 

Binance ended up settling with the CFTC for nearly $3 billion.

Active Users Fall, While Vol. Up 8%

On-chain data shows Bitcoin network metrics have diverged recently, with active addresses falling even as transaction volume shoots up.

Bitcoin Activity Metrics Are Showing A Mixed Picture

In its latest Market Pulse report, on-chain analytics firm Glassnode has talked about how a few different activity-related Bitcoin indicators have changed during the past week.

The first metric of interest is the “Active Address Count,” which measures, as its name suggests, the unique total number of addresses that are becoming involved in some kind of transaction activity on the blockchain every day.

Now, here is a chart that shows the trend in the Bitcoin Active Address Count over the last couple of years:

As displayed in the above graph, the Bitcoin Active Address Count spiked above the high statistical band earlier in the month when the cryptocurrency’s price set a new all-time high (ATH) above $124,000. This suggests user participation rose with the rally.

With the price decline that has followed the peak, however, the indicator’s value has plummeted. The metric is currently sitting at 692,000, which is down 2.2% compared to last week. This value is also below the 712,000 low statistical band, indicating that trader attention in the cryptocurrency has taken an especially big hit.

While the Active Address Count has plunged, another metric, the On-Chain Transfer Volume, has gone up instead.

From the chart, it’s visible that the Bitcoin On-Chain Transfer Volume saw an uptick alongside the ATH break this month, but instead of cooling off with the price, the metric has only climbed higher since then.

The indicator has surged by 7.8% to $10.3 billion, which is above the high statistical band of $10.15 billion. But one question arises: if the number of users taking part in transfer activity has gone down as suggested by the trend in the Active Address Count, why has the On-Chain Transfer Volume gone up?

The answer is that, although both of these metrics relate to network activity, they correspond to different segments of the investors. Small hands significantly outweigh large entities in population, so the Active Address Count reflects the activity of the retail investors. On the other hand, whale transactions eclipse retail moves, so the On-Chain Transfer Volume is usually dominated by moves from big-money holders.

The divergence that has cropped up between the two Bitcoin indicators could signal that retail speculation has become muted after the price decline, while whales have ramped up activity to reposition themselves.
