Microsoft’s August 2025 security updates are breaking recovery tools on Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs

Microsoft has acknowledged an issue with its recent August 2025 security updates that prevent users from resetting or recovering their systems using built-in Windows tools. According the company, the bug affects older versions of Windows 11 including 23H2 and 22H2 as well as Windows 10 22H2, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019/2021, and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019/2021.

Installing this month’s security updates can potentially break the Windows recovery options for users. Those attempting to reinstall Windows without losing their personal files through the Reset this PC feature may run into failures. Similarly, the Fix problems using Windows Update feature, which attempts to reinstall the current version of the OS on your device while preserving all your apps, documents, and settings, is also broken. Microsoft has also warned that the bug could affect IT administrators who rely on the RemoteWipe configuration service provider to reset devices remotely.

According to testing by Windows Latest, attempts to reset a PC on Windows 11 23H2 using the Reset this PC feature causes the process to start and then roll back immediately, leaving the reset incomplete. After this failure, no personal files are lost, but the recovery feature becomes unusable. Additionally, Windows doesn’t give any warning that the reset process can fail, meaning most people won’t realize there’s a problem until they actually try to reset their PC.

Mario Kart World updates Random online selection, but what fans really want is a classic mode

Mario Kart World has received another update, which along with some general fixes also makes changes to courses selected in Random during an online VS Race.

While the update notes for Ver. 1.1.2, as it is known, simply state the Mario Kart World team has “adjusted courses selected in ‘Random’ when selecting next course in a wireless ‘VS Race'”, there is more to it than it may first appear.

Prior to this update going live, if a player selected Randon during course selection while racing online, it would always result in a more traditional three lap race, rather than Mario Kart World’s community dubbed “intermission tracks”. These are the tracks that essentially run in one long and almost linear layout, and connect Mario Kart World’s, well, world.

Now, however, these intermission tracks have been added to the online Random fray, which means playing Mario Kart World in a more ‘traditional’ way with consistent three-lapped courses is not guaranteed.

Some online are rather unhappy with this development. “Nintendo has basically stepped in and said ‘no, you’re supposed to play this way’,” reads one comment on ResetEra. “They saw players clamoring for a more traditional online mode and did… the exact opposite of what they wanted.”

The Nintendo Switch 2 has been available in the US for more than two weeks — but good luck finding one. While millions of people have been able to snag the $450 console since it officially went up for sale on June 5, online inventory dried up fairly quickly at most stores soon after launch and remains difficult to find today. Best Buy restocked as recently as June 23, but those units — which required in-store pickup — quickly went of out of stock. Target, likewise, has some stock in at least one locality we checked, but it requires in-store purchase. You may also be able to grab a bundle at Costco if you’re a member there. Otherwise, it’s been slim pickings. As of today, we’re not seeing almost no availability — though you may have different luck in your locality when checking inventory, online or in person.

Again, venturing to a physical retail store can sometimes be the winning hack here. We can’t guarantee you’ll still be able to snag a Switch 2 the old-fashioned way, but it’s worth checking if a local Target, Best Buy, Walmart or GameStop — the four official retailers Nintendo lists on its store page — still has consoles in stock. For now, you can skip Amazon, though: For whatever reason, the biggest online retailer doesn’t even have a product page for the Switch 2 (but it does seem to be selling games and accessories). All that said, if you’re still on the hunt, we’ve rounded up all of the latest information we could find on how to buy the Nintendo Switch 2 and where you can pick one up.

Where to buy the Nintendo Switch 2

Walmart began online purchases at midnight ET on June 5. Currently, both the Mario Kart World bundle and the standalone console are “available” via third-party retailers, but listed for much higher than their standard $500 and $450 price tags — with limited quantities available. We wouldn’t recommend buying these; instead, wait for the console to be listed at its regular MSRP. Naturally, the world’s largest retailer is also selling the console at its brick-and-mortar locations, though the company has noted that quantities are limited and inventory will vary by location.

Best Buy started selling the Switch 2 at its retail locations on June 5. It previously said it wouldn’t sell the handheld at its online store during launch week, but it made additional consoles available on June 11 around 12PM ET, and again on June 23. Those restocks lasted for the better part of an hour and required in-store pickup, but the device is now sold out again.

Target had the Switch 2 in stores on June 5 and restocked its online inventory for at least a couple of hours starting around 3:30AM ET on June 6. It then had another restock on June 12 around 2:30PM ET, but that appears to have died out in less than an hour. As of June 24, we’re seeing in-store stock in at least one Philadelphia location.

GameStop has advertised in-store availability, though exactly how much stock your local store may have will vary by location. Online, the device has been unavailable for the past week, with the listings for the base console and Mario Kart bundle now pointing to a “Find a Store” page. We saw a $625 bundle that includes Mario Kart World, a microSD Express card and a few other accessories pop up a bit more frequently than the standard SKUs, but it’s no longer listed (and it was kind of a raw deal anyway).

You may still have some luck at certain membership-based retailers. A Mario Kart World bundle at Costco that includes a 12-month Switch Online subscription has gone in and out of stock since launch day. Sam’s Club has had a bundle without the Switch Online sub as well, though it’s out of stock now. We also saw the console at BJ’s early on June 5, but it’s no longer live there.

Verizon briefly had the Switch 2 available on launch day, but that’s dried up. Only those with Verizon service were able to order, and the process was apparently somewhat rocky.

Amazon hasn’t had any form of Switch 2 listing on its website, nor has it listed Mario Kart World. The company didn’t take pre-orders for the Switch 2 either, so it’s unclear if and when it will sell the device. You can, however, find some Switch 2 games.

Newegg has listed the Switch 2 on its site for several weeks, but it’s given no indication as to when it’ll begin sales. It previous showed a couple listings from a third-party seller, but at massively inflated prices.

With all of these stores, we’ve seen the Mario Kart World bundle available in greater quantities online than the base console, which costs $50 less. But given that Mario Kart is the Switch 2’s biggest launch game and retails for $80 on its own, that may not be the worst thing.

Nintendo, meanwhile, is only offering the Switch 2 via an invite system. This requires you to have been a Switch Online member for at least 12 months and logged at least 50 hours of Switch 1 playtime as of April 2. It can’t hurt to sign up if you meet the criteria, but don’t expect it to bear fruit immediately — it’s taken weeks for many people who registered in April to receive their invite.

Nintendo is selling a number of Switch 2 accessories alongside the console, from its (pricey) Pro Controller to cases to cameras for the new GameChat feature. Most of these became available on June 5. The same goes for games like Mario Kart World and the Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Another big Switch 2 release, Donkey Kong Bananza, won’t be available until mid-July but is still up for pre-order now.

As of this publication, just about all Switch 2 games are broadly available. Stock for the accessories remains a little spottier, but most devices are still available at multiple retailers. Nintendo’s official Switch 2 carrying cases have been the main exceptions, so you may need to look to third-party alternatives if you want some protection for your console right away.

MindsEye developer confirms layoffs as it “focuses on updates and performance optimization for MindsEye”

MindsEye developer Build a Rocket Boy has confirmed it has “had to make the painful decision” to lay off staff.

The studio’s inaugural title was met unfavorably by both critics and players alike, with the team saying on Discord that it was “heartbroken” about the ongoing optimization and performance issues.

According to IGN sources and our understanding of the UK’s redundancy legislation, over 100 developers could be at risk of redundancy, although the studio itself has not confirmed how many jobs are now at risk.

“We can confirm that we have had to make the painful decision to notify our hardworking team of some internal changes at Build A Rocket Boy,” the studio said in a statement to GamesIndustry.biz.

“While we are working to reassign roles for as many of those impacted by these changes as possible, sadly we are initiating a formal consultation process that may result in redundancies. This decision has not been made lightly, and we are committed to handling this process with transparency, fairness, and respect for all employees. We will provide further details to the team over the coming weeks.

“The launch of MindsEye has been a significant milestone for Build A Rocket Boy, but we know that we still have a lot more to do to grow our community in the coming years,” the statement added. “The challenges we’ve faced have only strengthened our resolve and, while we are deeply saddened by today’s decision and thankful to our incredible team, this shift allows us to focus on delivering ongoing updates and performance optimization for MindsEye, while also ensuring the long-term success of Build A Rocket Boy’s future ambitions.”

Build a Rocket Boy’s chief legal officer and chief financial officer left the company a week before the game’s June 10 release.

Over 2300 developers have lost their jobs in 2025 so far, with cuts and closures at Freejam, Splash Damage, Piranha Games, Jar of Sparks, Ubisoft, ProbablyMonsters, Iron Galaxy, Sumo Group, Liquid Sword, NetEase Games, Toast Interactive, Night School Studio, Striking Distance, Until Dawn remake developers, Ballistic Moon, Eidos Montréal, PlaySide, AppLovin, Nerial, Reality Labs, and, most recently, there have been multiple cuts at EA, including Respawn, People Can Fly, and Jagex.

Dune: Awakening Will Receive Major Free Updates Every Three Or Four Months

Dune: Awakening will receive a steady flow of new content, with major updates planned to release every three or four months, according to developer Funcom.

In a Reddit AMA, Funcom outlined its vision for the future of its popular survival MMO set in author Frank Herbert’s sci-fi universe. Executive producer Scott Junior said each major update will be free and include new story and PvE content. These updates will be released alongside the game’s paid DLCs, which can be bought standalone or together as part of the game’s season pass.

Junior additionally mentioned Dune: Awakening will receive new PvE maps for players to explore in the future, though it’s unclear if these would be included for free as a major update or come in the form of a paid expansion.

As for the more immediate future, Junior said an update is coming in early July that will contain “too many” quality-of-life changes to list. Junior didn’t go into detail on what those changes would be, but said to expect the patch notes when the patch is closer to being ready for testing.

Funcom dove into plenty of other topics as part of the AMA, ranging from plans to make it so players can name storage containers and vehicles to its thoughts on potential changes to Dune: Awakening’s PvP-focused endgame. Many of players’ complaints are focused around the heavy reliance on vehicles in the game’s endgame Deep Desert zone, so much so that PvP encounters are largely between flying Ornithopters rather than on-foot encounters where the game’s melee and firearms can come into play. When asked about the potential of a Deep Desert zone where only ground vehicles would be allowed, creative director Joel Bylos shot down the idea but did say Funcom is looking to make some changes.

“The current balance between vehicles and on-foot is not tuned to our liking and there are multiple changes in the pipeline to address this,” Bylos said.

Other additions players can expect in Dune: Awakening’s future based on Funcom’s Reddit answers include an option to duel other players, a deposit all option for water, changes to the endgame PvE Landsraad system, additional contracts to complete, and a third faction that “will change the entire dynamic” of the Landsraad, according to Bylos.

Dune: Awakening is finding major success on Steam, having surpassed 140,000 concurrent players. Its most recent update addressed some of its endgame PvP problems by making it so vehicles no longer deal damage when colliding with other players, as well as increased respawn timers in PvP zones. Dune: Awakening is still slated to launch on consoles, but not until 2026.

Grounded 2 will have less frequent, much larger early access updates

Obsidian will be shaking up its early access strategy for the release of Grounded 2 next month. Rather than the monthly micro-updates that were the norm when Grounded launched, the developer has decided that something more like every four to five months will be the norm.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Grounded 2 game director Chris Parker laid out the studio’s thinking.

“When we started with Grounded 1 in early access, we were trying to do almost monthly updates. That was a hassle and it didn’t work. It didn’t make the community happy and it didn’t make the team happy. So we are looking at longer, meatier updates that are in the four to five month range,” he said.

It’ll more directly mimic what Obsidian’s strategy was later on in the first Grounded’s early access development cycle, “where the team was getting out a huge chunk of whatever area of the yard, with all-new creatures, armor, new equipment, new mechanics, or whatever it might have been,” said Parker.

Grounded 2 will also include more of a storyline to follow, he noted. The team wants to preserve the fun survival-build experience of the first game but at the same time wants there to be some “narrative flair” to follow along with. That shouldn’t be impossible, I expect, given that Obsidian is much better known for making heavily story-driven roleplaying games rather than survival craft sandboxes.

Dune: Awakening creative director stands firm on PvP direction, reveals planned frequency of major updates

A Dune: Awakening Reddit AMA has provided insight into when the next major update may be coming, as well as a firm stance on the design direction of the PvP endgame.

The AMA was handled by Funcom developers including creative director Joel Bylos. It was Bylos who responded to questions regarding the endgame PvP, which has proven controversial among those torn on the orniphopter-laden meta that has formed in the game’s opening weeks.

When asked whether the team was considering removing missile launchers for scout orniphopters – the source of much ire – Bylos responded with considerations from the team.

“Equipping a Scout Ornithopter with rocket Pods [could] reduce overall maneuverability and max speed. This will help solidify this module selection as a desire to engage in combat and balance it versus other combat-focused vehicles,” said Bylos. He also noted other ideas, like an increased impact on the scout orniphopters’ heat when shooting missiles, as well as a baseline speed increase to orniphopters with boosters equipped to make escaping easier.

As for the overall endgame experience, Bylos expanded his thoughts as to explain more macro goals the team desire.

“We want players to make meaningful decisions about what they bring with them and how they outfit their vehicles,” Bylos stated. “Once players have engaged in PvP, we want the experience to be reliable, responsive, and clearly understood. This determines how PvP as a whole feels and how players make their moment to moment decisions in a fight.”

Bylos would conclude by addressing concerns regarding connection-related troubles: “To ensure a more reliable experience in ground combat, we are continuing to address issues with movement desyncs and rubber banding, as well as ability activation reliability.”

When asked whether or not a Deep-Desert-style zone without vehicles was being considered, Bylos outright stated no, elaborating: “a lot of our adjustments and balancing are going to drive combat towards the core vision, which is people competing over points of interest in the Deep Desert”. Bylos continued: “The current balance between vehicles and on-foot is not tuned to our liking and there are multiple changes in the pipeline to address this (above and beyond bugs we will fix).”

So it’s certainly been made clear that quality of life changes are being worked on, like the removal of vehicle ramming damage in PvP, the team stood firm for their ideas on how the Deep Desert works. Which is good, in my opinion. Filing down this “vision”, as Bylos puts it, risks removing a substantial amount of character from the game.

The AMA wasn’t just focused on PvP! Other interesting tidbits were revealed by the team, such as a quality-of-life update coming in July, the fact that major Dune: Awakening updates are planned to release every three-four months with new PvE and story stuff to play through, as well as plans to add new contracts to the game.

In Eurogamer’s Dune: Awakening review, the endgame was described glowingly: “It feels less like structured group activities you’d see in a traditional MMORPG raid, and more like grouping up in Classic WoW for a world boss. Or joining a hunt train in Final Fantasy 14. It’s organic community play, something that forms bonds, strong friendships, and undoubtedly tense rivalries.”

Loving Hagga Basin in Dune Awakening? Developer has plans (within plans) to bring more maps like that in future updates

Future updates for Dune: Awakening will seemingly include “Hagga-Basin-like maps”.

Revealed by community manager Iggy in the Dune Awakening Discord server, he wrote: “I think Joel kinda leaked in the past that we plan to add more Hagga-Basin-like maps in the future as part of new content”.

Iggy refers to pre-launch developer vlogs in which Dune: Awakening spoke about the roadmap for future updates. Creative director Joel Bylos stated updates for the game would be free, with only optional cosmetics, battle passes, and especially large expansions being sold.

Iggy later echoed this point, stating: “Content will come as part of free updates, as far as I am aware. If it ever comes as part of a paid package, I imagine it would be because it’s something big.” Iggy continues “But for now I think we have said we plan to release content for free, and then optional stuff via optional DLCs so we can actually afford rent, lights, and pineapple on pizza.”

Dune Awakening has proven exceptionally popular since its launch on Steam, breaking 150,000 concurrent players and popping off among the higher reaches of the Top Sellers list alongside Stellar Blade. A recent patch for the game provided several quality of life fixes, and ended the practice of crushing players with orniphopters in PvP.

Eurogamer’s recent review of Dune Awakening, which scored it four stars, offered praise to the progression through Hagga Basin. It features the following: “[…] the process of gathering material around the starter area of Hagga Basin, refining your haul at your handcrafted base, and manufacturing new gear is made endlessly compelling with an unwavering faithfulness to the source material.”
