A worrying Windows SecureBoot issue could let hackers install malware – here’s what we know, and whether you need to update

Microsoft has fixed a Secure Boot vulnerability that allowed threat actors to turn off security solutions and install bootkit malware on most PCs.

Security researchers Binarly recently discovered a legitimate BIOS update utility, signed with Microsoft’s UEFI CA 2011 certificate. This root certificate, used in the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Secure Boot process, plays a central role in verifying the authenticity and integrity of bootloaders, operating systems, and other low-level software before a system boots.

According to the researchers, the utility is trusted on most modern systems utilizing UEFI firmware – but the problem stems from the fact it reads a user-writable NVRAM variable without proper validation, meaning an attacker with admin access to an operating system can modify the variable and write arbitrary data to memory locations during the UEFI boot process.

Binarly managed to use this vulnerability to disable Secure Boot and allow any unsigned UEFI modules to run. In other words, they were able to disable security features and install bootkit malware that cannot be removed even if the hard drive is replaced.

The vulnerable module had been circulating in the wild since 2022, and was uploaded to VirusTotal in 2024 before being reported to Microsoft in late February 2025.

Microsoft recently released the June edition of Patch Tuesday, its cumulative update addressing different, recently-discovered, vulnerabilities – among which was the arbitrary write vulnerability in Microsoft signed UEFI firmware, which is now tracked as CVE-2025-3052. It was assigned a severity score of 8.2/10 (high).

The company also determined that the vulnerability affected 14 modules in total, now fixing all of them.

“During the triage process, Microsoft determined that the issue did not affect just a single module as initially believed, but actually 14 different modules,” Binarly said. “For this reason, the updated dbx released during the Patch Tuesday on June 10, 2025 contains 14 new hashes.”

Infinity Nikki is getting a big update this week, but will that be enough to turn its Steam review rating around?

Infinity Nikki, the visually impressive, open-world dress-up game that came out late last year, continues to grow with new updates. The game’s latest, arriving this Friday, June 13, is one of its biggest, kicking off a new seasonal chapter.

The Playful Season transforms the in-game city, and introduces some new story content, new outfits, new puzzles, minigames, and more.

The Playful Season (Version 1.6) sees Infinity Nikki’s protagonists, Nikki and Momo, turned into fairies after encountering a cursed fairy apprentice in need of help. To lift the spell, the pair set off on a quest to explore a storybook-like realm with new challenges.

At the core of this update are three new interactive attractions. There’s a photographable sky path where everyone can float in the air, and a pumpkin-shaped ride that’s made up of elevated, winding tracks. Then there’s the rotund chicken trampoline, which makes different sounds depending on where you bounce on it.

This update will require players to use their heads, too, because there’s a series of seven maze challenges to solve. Your goal in each one is the same: find the petrified animals hidden within to reveal the path forward.

You’ll find five new ability outfits in the Playful Season, too. Enchanted Encounter is a five-star outfit that causes nearby animals to float. There are two four-star outfits here as well: the Comic-Style Prince Outfit, and Cloud-Summoning Outfit. Finally, two more limited-time outfits will make a return from previous seasons, one five-star and the other four.

As far as new decoration items, you’ll find a new rocking horse Nikki can sit on, as well as a potion cauldron that releases plumes of smoke depending on the ingredients you toss into it. While all of that sounds good, it remains to be seen whether it’s going to be enough for players. The game currently sits at a Mostly Negative overall Steam review rating, so there’s clearly a lot that needs to be addressed.

Apple Wallet’s iOS 26 update scans your emails for package delivery tracking

One of the upcoming changes to Apple Wallet is bound to become one of its most useful features if you frequently shop online and get deliveries. When you get iOS 26 on your iPhone, your Wallet app will start using Apple Intelligence’s capabilities to automatically scan your emails and identify order tracking details sent by merchants or couriers. The app will then summarize and display those deliveries as cards. As MacRumors has noted, Wallet can already do that for purchases made using Apple Pay. With the update, you’ll be able to keep track of all your deliveries from one place and get progress notifications.

At the moment, access to the feature is still limited to developers who’ve installed the beta version of iOS 26. The feature itself is still in beta, and you will have to enable it by going to the Wallet and Apple Pay section in Settings, heading into Apple Pay Defaults and switching on Orders Found in Mail under Order Tracking.

Apple announced its upcoming mobile platform at WWDC 2025, revealing an interface that has gone through a massive redesign. It features a “Liquid Glass” UI that’s defined by icons, toolbars and tab bars with a see-through appearance. In addition to being able to track orders, the iOS 26 version of Wallet will allow you to create a Digital ID with a US passport and will also come with more detailed boarding passes. iOS 26 isn’t coming out until this fall, but Apple plans to start rolling out public betas in July.

A big Civilization 7 update is on the way with ‘large and huge maps,’ Steam Workshop support, and a promise to keep working on it

A beefy new update for Civilization 7 is coming soon, featuring “several long-awaited features” including Large and Huge maps, new advanced game options, town specializations, and Steam Workshop support.

The full low-down for those who want to dive deep is up on the Civilization website, but here’s the crash course version:

  • Large and Huge map sizes, with a note that “bigger maps have bigger hardware demands,” so you may notice slower turn times or performance drops while playing on them
  • New Advanced Game Options including selectable crisis types, customizable AI difficulty, and the ability to bypass Civ unlocks so you can select from any civilization during age transitions
  • Steam Workshop support for better mod support, with documentation, “best practices,” and a few example mods made by members of the development team
  • New Town Specializations will see the addition of a new Resort Town, reworked Urban Center, and “small but meaningful” tweaks to other town types
  • New City-State Bonuses, Pantheons, and Beliefs: 24 new City-State bonuses, 2 new Pantheons, and a big batch of 14 new Religious Beliefs (across Founder, Reliquary, and Enhancer Beliefs)

Naturally, bug fixes, UI updates, and quality-of-life improvements are also in the works, along with “some surprises”—all will be revealed in the full patch notes, which are “coming soon.”

Firaxis also touched on what’s coming beyond this update, including some features targeted for July, and bigger-picture issues including overly abrupt Age transitions, lack of replayability, and a need to improve the “sense of empire identity and continuity throughout a multi-Age campaign.”

“These are significant areas of the game that are incredibly important to get right, but are more complex to solve,” Firaxis wrote. “Addressing this feedback in a satisfying way will take time, over the course of several updates. That said, you’ll start to see some smaller changes in July focused on end of Age countdowns and improvements to Age Transitions.

“For the longer-term and broader changes, we’ll share more detailed plans here when we’re ready. We’re invested in making these changes and empowering you to enjoy what sets Civ 7 apart.”

Civilization 7 has indeed struggled since its release earlier this year. It remains stuck with a “mixed” user rating on Steam, and user reviews are not currently headed in the right direction. Player numbers are also not where they should be: Civ 7’s concurrent player count on Steam is lagging well behind that of Civ 6 and, more worryingly, Civ 5. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of publisher Take-Two Interactive, said in May that the company is “really happy” with Civilization 7 overall, and that “in the fullness of time, it’ll be just great,” but how much time the company is willing to give it before it decides to move is the big question right now.

Despite its new easy mode, Lies of P will get a ‘difficulty reduction’ in a future update because too many players are getting wrecked by the DLC

The Pinocchio soulslike Lies of P got an easy mode alongside the release of Overture DLC last week, an entirely uncontroversial move that riled up absolutely no one. But the DLC also apparently introduced a major difficulty spike in the Legendary Stalker mode—previously the game’s default—and it’s bad enough that game director Ji Won Choi says developer Neowiz is going to make some adjustments.

Soulslikes are supposed to be tough, yes, but as you can see in this newly formed megathread on the Lies of P subreddit (via Kotaku), Lies of P felt a little too tough for quite a few players following the launch of Overture. The problem seems particularly bad in NG+ modes. Naturally, there are a few who proclaim the game is actually very easy—there always is—but the bulk of posts seem to feel that the DLC has thrown things out of whack.

“The base game was basically pitch perfect. There were a few stupid things, but nothing was super egregious,” redditor Lord_Nightraven wrote. “DLC? The devs overdid things. And it shows. The stat numbers alone feel like NG+1 end game/early NG+2. That’s on NG+0. That’s a massive spike all things considered on intended difficulty, aka Legendary Stalker.”

“I’m NG+1 getting two-shot by everything even on easiest difficulty and I’m stuck on the predator boss,” tylxr567 complained. “I’m bad but seriously I can complete the main game on hardest difficulty just fine, this DLC is crazy.”

RJE808 was somewhat more to the point about it: “Markiona is about to make me drop this shit. Holy fuck.”

Well, good news, Overture-sufferers: Your plaintive wailing has been heard.

“We want to thank you for all the feedback and suggestions our community has sent us since the launch,” Choi said in a video posted today. “We’re reviewing all of it carefully and are already looking into when to implement some of your suggestions.

“Among all the feedback, we are paying the closest attention to the combat experience. We identified areas that did not turn out quite as we intended. Therefore, we are reviewing various adjustments, including difficulty reduction.”

Don’t expect Neowiz to start waving the nerfhammer around immediately, though. “Combat is one of the most fundamental experiences in Lies of P, so any modifications or changes require meticulous work and thorough testing,” Choi said. Developers are still digging into what exactly needs to be done, but Choi added that he wanted to put the word out now so fans know “why it’s taking our team some time, and the general direction we’re heading.”

It says something, I think, that the reaction to the announcement of the difficulty reduction seems mostly welcoming. Again, the git gud crowd is there to say it’s not actually hard at all, but the broader feeling is that the DLC introduced serious issues with difficulty scaling. The adjustment, whenever it happens, will no doubt lead to a fresh round of “I beat it pre-patch” jokes, but if it also means the majority of players can properly enjoy it again, I’d call that a fair trade.

Nintendo has announced Splatoon Raiders for Switch 2.

This game will serve as a spin-off of the Splatoon series, with players taking on the role of a mechanic. The game was announced via Nintendo’s bespoke Today app, where it shares daily updates on games and franchises under its umbrella.

In addition to Splatoon Raiders, Nintendo also has Splatoon 3 version 10.0.0 in bound. This will add new weapons, badges and more to the base game. As per the video shared via the Nintendo Today app, Splatoon 3 players will soon find 30 new weapon kits, the arrival of Urchin Underpass, new stat tracking options for weapon power, while the weapon freshness limit is being increased.

On top of all that, Nintendo has also talked of improved visuals and frame rate for Switch 2 as part of an update coming on 12th June. It has assured that those playing on Switch 2 will still be able to play against those on the original Switch console, as well.

Splatoon 3 was initially released back in 2022, and we here at Eurohamer were rather taken with it. “There are few surprises to be found in Splatoon 3’s multiplayer or campaign, but it is the best Nintendo’s spectacular series has been to date,” reads Eurogamer’s Splatoon 3 review.

Lies of P is set to receive further updates, including “difficulty reduction”, following the release of its Overture DLC.

In a video from director Jiwon Choi, he stated the development team is grateful for feedback and suggestions from players since the DLC was shadow-dropped last week at Summer Game Fest.

“We’re reviewing all of it carefully and are already looking into when to implement some of your suggestions,” he said. “Among all the feedback, we are paying the closest attention to the combat experience.

“We identified areas that did not turn out quite as we intended,” he continued. “Therefore, we are reviewing various adjustments, including difficulty reduction.

“However, combat is one of the most fundamental experiences in Lies of P, so any modifications or changes require meticulous work and thorough testing.”

The details and date for the next patch are unknown, but the director is clearly keen to keep the game’s community up to date with the development process. It follows a patch alongside the DLC that’s added plenty of quality of life changes to the base game.

Since the DLC’s release, players have criticised Overture for its high difficulty. In particular, on NG+ even regular enemies are proving challenging.

What has perhaps exacerbated this is that the DLC is only accessible once you reach chapter nine of the main game. It means that, if like me, you started a NG+ run after finishing the game, you’ll need to play through it again to reach the DLC. I suspect a lot of players are therefore attempting Overture for the first time on NG+ rather than starting the base game again, raising the difficulty level beyond what was intended for a first run.

While Overture is a paid expansion for Lies of P, the base game has received a free update adding new difficulty levels. The original difficulty is now normal, while two easier difficulty levels have been added.

This addition is somewhat controversial for soulslike games, which are known for their high challenge, but it’s also ensuring the game is more approachable for a wider audience. And, for me at least, it’s making racing through the base game to get to the DLC a lot quicker on easy mode!

Still, it’s clear that balancing the difficulty is proving a challenge for the developer with this additional expansion. But that’s something even FromSoftware struggled with when Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree was released – it was criticised by some for being too difficult and was subsequently adjusted.

‘Beautiful’ and ‘Hard to Read’: Designers React to Apple’s Liquid Glass Update

Apple’s translucent design update for iOS 26, called Liquid Glass, is now available to developers, with a public beta scheduled for next month. The refresh—Apple’s first major interface overhaul in 10 years—makes app icons, buttons, menus, and pop-ups look like they are made of frosted glass, with blurred background colors peeking through.

The sweeping software changes are not just for iPhones. This glassy look—inspired by the operating system in the Vision Pro headset—will eventually roll out to the entire suite of Apple devices, from smartwatches to iPads.

After the WWDC 2025 keynote concluded on Monday, many design-focused developers WIRED spoke with were impressed by the major update but had lingering questions about how this translucent look could impact readability for users.

“It’s hard to read some of it,” says Allan Yu, a product designer currently building the workplace messaging app Output. “Mainly because I think they made it too transparent.” Yu suggests bumping up the blurring or adjusting the backgrounds to make onscreen designs more readable.

“Similar to the first beta for iOS 7, what we’ve seen so far is rough on the edges and potentially veers into distracting or challenging to read, especially for users with visual impairments,” says Josh Puckett, cofounder of Iteration, which helps startups with designs. Still, Puckett is optimistic, based on Apple’s past accessibility features, that readability will improve over time.

Serhii Popov, a design-first software engineer at MacPaw, the company behind the CleanMyMac app, is curious to see how the new operating system will look on Macs in bright light situations, where glare already impacts visibility. But overall, Popov is enamored with this “really fresh” look from Apple. “I think it will make everything look bigger and allow you to read or interact with the UI with more comfort,” says Popov. For him, the new design and updates look especially sleek on iPads.

Beyond readability concerns, the first impression from some designers is that this new look could be unnecessarily distracting for users.

“From a technical perspective, it’s a very impressive effect. I applaud the time and effort it must have taken to mimic refraction and dispersion of light to such a high degree,” says Adam Whitcroft, a designer at Owner.com, which makes apps and websites for restaurants. “But, sadly I haven’t seen a single example of where it’s pulled off in a way that’s complementary to the broader context it’s presented in.” Whitcroft points to the dispersion and refraction of layers beneath the apps as visually distracting, especially as the user interface is changing layouts. “If you’ve designed a UI that draws the attention of the eye away from the wider context, you’ve gone down the wrong path,” he says.

Schedule 1 recently received a new update, and Patch v0.3.6 includes several changes, including one that the community has been requesting for a long time. Now you can transfer your employees between your various properties to get the highest possible efficiency for your business empire.

Apart from that new feature, this update includes several other changes, as well as numerous tweaks and bug fixes that will significantly enhance the in-game quality of life. TVGS has also confirmed that the infrastructure for the community voting system is now in place, and the first vote is expected to occur soon through the in-game main menu.

  • Added lockers. These work as a replacement for employee beds. However, all your previous saves with assigned beds will still exist, while you will be able to use lockers moving forward, even in those saved worlds.
  • Added filters for items slots, allowing you to whitelist or blacklist items on specific slots to ensure your employees place all their items in their respective slots.
  • Introduced the option to transfer employees across your various properties.

All tweaks and bug fixes

The full list of tweaks and bug fixes in Patch v0.3.6 for Schedule 1 includes plenty of changes that will improve your in-game experience. These changes are:

  • Increased storage unit employee capacity to 3.
  • Consolidated all NPC save files.
  • Consolidated property save files.
  • Consolidated business save files.
  • Changed the trash can pickup area to be square instead of circular.
  • The trash can pickup area is now visible while you’re placing the trash can.
  • Fixed occasional NPC long-distance pathing failures.
  • Fixed occasional employee pathing failures.
  • Fixed employees sometimes attempting to pick up items that they don’t have the inventory capacity for.
  • Fixed botanist-related performance issue.
  • Fixed police showing question marks above their heads while they’re unconscious.
  • Fixed viewmodel drifting.
  • Fixed an incorrect statement regarding how dealers are unlocked.

What’s next for Schedule 1?

Most of the changes featured in Schedule 1 update v0.3.6 were already confirmed to be in the works with the patch notes for v0.3.5. Although the patch notes have not confirmed what the future holds, Tyler, the developer of the game, has confirmed that they are “excited to get back into the swing of things and get to work on the first major Schedule 1 update.”

Additionally, the first community vote is scheduled to be held on this patch, allowing players to express their opinions through a voting prompt available on the main menu once the vote goes live.
