Developers using Unity warned to patch games ASAP following the discovery of a serious security vulnerability

by admin October 4, 2025

Developers who have created their games using Unity have been warned to patch them as soon as possible following the discovery of a security vulnerability in Unity versions 2017.1 and later.

In a statement, Unity said a “security vulnerability was identified that affects games and applications built on Unity versions 2017.1 and later for Android, Windows, Linux, and macOS operating systems”, but insisted “there is no evidence of any exploitation of the vulnerability, nor has there been any impact on users or customers.”

“We have proactively provided fixes that address the vulnerability, and they are already available to all developers,” Unity continued. “The vulnerability was responsibly reported by the security researcher RyotaK, and we thank him for working with us.”

Unity just sent out an email telling everyone who released a game between 2017 and today that they need to recompile and republish their games due to a security vulnerability. Yikes. CVE-2025-59489 pic.twitter.com/uXgGFMsvFV

The company added that it has now released an update for each of the major and minor versions of the Unity Editor, starting with Unity 2019.1, and a binary patcher to patch already-built applications dating back to 2017.1. It also warned developers that “it is imperative that you review [its] guidance to ensure the continued safety of your users”.

As spotted by VGC, the news resulted in some developers temporarily pulling their games from sale as they work over the weekend to get the patch implemented as soon as possible, including Obsidian, which removed a number of games from digital stores while it worked on the updates.

“Unity is dedicated to the security and integrity of our platform, our customers, and the wider community,” Unity concluded. “Transparent communication is central to this commitment, and we will continue to provide updates as necessary.”

Surprise Unity Exploit Gets Pillars Of Eternity 2 And More Yanked From Steam

by admin October 3, 2025

Obsidian Entertainment is pulling Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, Pentiment, and more from Steam and other digital storefronts on Friday after Unity, the game engine used to make them, was revealed to have a years-old security flaw. The company behind it is now urging developers to update their games to avoid any issues.

“A security vulnerability was identified that affects games and applications built on Unity versions 2017.1 and later for Android, Windows, Linux, and macOS operating systems,” former Xbox mascot Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb wrote on the Unity forum earlier today. “There is no evidence of any exploitation of the vulnerability, nor has there been any impact on users or customers.”

Hryb added that the company “proactively provided fixes that address the vulnerability, and they are already available to all developers” and is encouraging all of them to update their products as soon as possible. Windows, Steam, and others already implemented fixes at the platform level today. Now some studios are taking their games down while they get them patched. One of them is Grounded 2 maker Obsidian Entertainment.

A security vulnerability affecting our games that use Unity has recently been identified.

“As a precaution and to keep you safe, we have temporarily removed the following titles and products from digital storefronts while we implement the necessary updates to address the issue,” it wrote on X. In addition to Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire and Pentiment, it also includes certain versions of Grounded 2 and Avowed which include artbooks made with Unity.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” the studio wrote. “Our team is working on a fix and will restore these games as soon as possible. We will provide additional information once they are available again. We also encourage players who have already downloaded these games to update them as soon as a patch becomes available.”

Hey everyone,

We’ve rolled out a quick patch to address the Unity security vulnerability.

Your saves and gameplay are safe! Just hit update and you’re covered. And if you haven’t joined yet, No Rest for the Wicked is 30% off on Steam right now. This is the perfect moment to…

Other developers have also started rolling out updates, some without temporarily removing their games from digital store shelves. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire and Pentiment, both great games, were currently discounted for Steam’s autumn sale. Hopefully, they’re back soon.

Unity developers can now tap into system screen reader tools on macOS and Windows

by admin September 5, 2025

Unity is updating its game engine to support native screen readers in both macOS and Windows. The feature is available now in the Unity 6000.3.0a5 alpha, and should make the process of making games accessible for blind players cheaper for developers, Can I Play That? writes.

Screen readers narrate on-screen menus so blind and low-vision players can navigate a game or a piece of software without additional assistance. Typically, screen reading software is custom-built for each game, which can make them resource-intensive for developers to implement. “Building something like that from scratch has to be decided upon early in development so you have the time/resources allocated to make it properly,” Steve Saylor, an accessibility consultant and creator, shared on Bluesky. “Having it in-engine can mean the heavy lifting is done for you, and the cost of time/resources now is significantly lower.”

Unity previously offered APIs for both Android and iOS’ built-in screen readers in its Unity 6.0 release, but hadn’t yet added support for Windows Narrator or macOS VoiceOver. With this new alpha and its eventual release as Unity 6.3, developers creating games with Unity will have access to a native screen reader in all of the engine’s major platforms. Considering how popular Unity is as a game engine, that could vastly improve the accessibility of future games.
