Guillermo del Toro Explains Why His Frankenstein’s Monster Looks So Unique

by admin August 21, 2025

Clearly, we’re all very, very excited about Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, which is coming to theaters on October 17 before arriving on Netflix on November 7. That’s because it’s del Toro, one of our most beloved filmmakers; his cast is incredible; and there has rarely been a better pairing of filmmaker and subject matter. One other thing has us hyped up too, and that’s Frankenstein’s monster. Del Toro loves a monster and, in a new interview, he talks about how he approached his monster differently, both visually and in his on-screen creation.

“Ever since I started drawing the creature in the late ’70s and early ’80s, I knew I didn’t want symmetric scars and I didn’t want sutures or clamps,” del Toro said to Variety. “What I thought was very interesting was to make him like a jigsaw puzzle. I wanted him to look beautiful, like a newborn thing, because a lot of times, Frankenstein steps into the frame and he looks like an accident victim. But Victor is as much an artist as he is a surgeon, so the cuts had to make aesthetic sense. I always thought about him as made of alabaster. I never understood something about the other versions: why does Victor use so many pieces from so many bodies? Why doesn’t he just resurrect a guy who had a heart attack? And the answer for me was, what if the bodies come from a battlefield? Then he needs to find a way to bring the corpses together in a harmonious way.”

What does that all mean? We aren’t quite sure, but it sounds absolutely fascinating. Equally fascinating is del Toro talking about his choice to actually show Dr. Frankenstein make the creature. “Almost nobody shows the creation of the monster,” he said. “Everybody shows thunder, and the monster is already put together. And I thought, if you are following a rock star, you want to shoot the concert. So instead of making it horrible that he is putting all these things together from bodies, I made it into a waltz. I made it into a joyous fun, sort of crazy concert. He’s running around the lab, putting this body together, grabbing this part and placing it together here or there.”

Look, if the image of Oscar Isaac in posh Victorian-era clothes dancing around a lab creating an alabaster monster out of dead bodies doesn’t do it for you, why are you reading this website?

Frankenstein will have “the biggest theatrical release that Netflix gives its films,” according to del Toro, starting on October 17. It’ll be in theaters for at least three weeks and, eventually, will even get a physical media release. But, for most people, they’ll see it on Netflix starting November 7. Read more from the filmmaker about his love of the source material, his alternate plans for the movie, and more over at Variety.

Grim Dawn’s next expansion will be honkin’ huge, with 54 new bosses and more than 380 new unique items, it takes up ‘approximately 3.55sq. km’

by admin June 23, 2025

During the Great Britpop Wars of the 1990s someone might have asked you whether you preferred Oasis or Blur. The correct answer was “Pulp, actually.” Likewise, if someone asks whether you like Path of Exile 2 or Diablo 4, the correct answer is Grim Dawn, dammit.

Crate Entertainment’s mud-and-blood action RPG was thought dead when its third expansion, Fangs of Asterkarn, was announced out of the blue in 2023. As Crate’s latest developer blog explains, the expansion was announced earlier in development than the previous two as a way of reminding people there was still life in the old girl yet. That’s one reason why it’s not out yet. The other is that it’s bloody ginormous.

“To put things in perspective,” writes designer Kamil ‘Zantai’ Marczewski, “by our current estimations, Fangs of Asterkarn will cover approximately 3.55sq. km, which makes it roughly 110% as big as Ashes of Malmouth. Kurnhold, the de-facto capital of the Kurn and the new quest hub, spans 4 zones, compared to the 1.5 that the Covenant of the Three took up in Forgotten Gods.”

Related articles

For the sake of comparison, Forgotten Worlds took up only 2.5sq. km, and even the rather large Ashes of Malmouth was a slightly smaller 3.2sq. km. “Scattered across Asterkarn are 54 new bosses,” Marczewski goes on, “including 8 new Nemesis encounters. Mechanically, these bosses will feature some of the most advanced skill tech the game has had yet as we continue to push this aging engine to its absolute limits.”

With “over 380 new Unique items and 120 Monster Infrequents”, not counting Awakened Epic items or Ascended common drops, “Fangs of Asterkarn is Grim Dawn’s largest expansion, filled with the most unique assets, animations, and new creatures than we have ever done before.”

Which, again, suggests we shouldn’t expect to see it release too soon. Apparently “a late Fall/Winter 2025 release is within the realm of possibility” but it’s just as likely that’ll be adjusted to “Spring 2026, or even early Summer if we need more time to polish.” Hey, whenever it’s ready is good for us. It’s not like we don’t have plenty of other things to play this year. When’s Titan Quest 2 coming out, anyway?

(Titan Quest 2 is Suede in the Britpop comparison.)

Rainbow Six Siege X

Rainbow Six Siege is more popular and better than ever. That’s one point for ‘make something actually unique and stick with it,’ zero points for ‘give up and lay everyone off’

by admin June 17, 2025

Rainbow Six Siege is having a moment. The tactical FPS is one week into a major update that introduced a new name (Siege X), a wild 6v6 mode, modernized maps, and most consequential of all, a new price point: After holding out for 10 years, Siege is finally free-to-play.

Siege X is now more popular than ever, sustaining the kind of top-five Steam numbers that it used to only reach during free weekends. That boggles my mind, because to me, Siege has always felt like a game that’s just a handful of disasters away from collapse.

When I burnt out in 2020, those disasters were around every corner: forgettable operators, terrible battle passes, unpopular balance choices, and disruptive bugs introduced faster than Ubi could fix them. I can think of no other game that, even in its darkest moments, was forced to repeatedly disable entire characters because of game-breaking exploits. I remember players wondering at the time if Valorant, with its Siege-inspired abilities, would deal a fatal blow.

Related articles

But Siege persisted. It’s a testament to its uniqueness that folks stuck around—Siege’s secret sauce is that there is no “other” Siege to match its combination of competitive lethality, operator counterplay, and granular destruction. I believe that uniqueness can also explain some of its big missteps over the years.

When I think about how different Siege was back in 2016, and how differently we played it, it’s clear to me that Ubisoft and the community were figuring out what this game was together. Ubisoft’s funky premise of asymmetrical teams of attackers with grapple hooks and defenders who aren’t supposed to go outside spawned a dictionary’s worth of techniques that only exist in Siege: runouts, vertical play, murder holes, rotation holes, bandit tricking, hard breaching, soft breaching, intel denial, droning.

Above: In Dual Front, defenders aren’t spotted for going outside, a fact some players are still getting used to.

It took time, experience, multiple leadership regimes, and a lot of mistakes for Siege to become the best (so far) version of itself. The big vibe shift came a few years ago, when Ubi officially slowed down on new maps and operators and instead focused on reworking existing systems, an initiative that has resulted in my favorite changes to Siege since launch, like attacker repick, attachments 2.0, operator reworks, a shooting range, match replay, and the secondary hard breach gadget.

Siege X is the culmination of Ubisoft slowly learning how to care for Siege. It’s a mature update, targeting fundamental features and improvements that have been a long time coming:

  • Rebuilt audio: Sound now travels realistically down hallways and through walls with believable reverb. It sounds better, but it’s also more accurate and consistent.
  • Modernized maps: Five popular maps got a graphical pass with new 4K assets, moody new lighting, and “destructible ingredients” that change how they’re played. Gas pipes can explode to kill players or deny areas. Fire extinguishers create smoke clouds.
  • Communication wheel: Better late than never, Siege finally has Apex-style contextual pings, so I can now point at a wall and ask teammates to reinforce it, or ping a hallway and declare it “all clear.”
  • Clash rework: The latest of a series of reworks that are so substantial that this is basically a new operator. Clash can now place her shield on the ground, creating a piece of cover for herself that also slows enemies with a shock.
  • Advanced rappel: Now you “sprint” on a wall and steer around corners while rappelling, a small movement change that saves so much time.
  • Pick & Ban 2.0: Instead of banning four operators at the start of the match, teams now ban one each round, speeding things along and encouraging teams to ban reactively based on the previous round. So, so much better.
  • Enemy outlines: Long ago, Siege made all its maps bright and flat-looking so players couldn’t hide in dark corners. Now that the good lighting is back, enemies now have the slightest red outline so they stand out in darkness. Sounds blasphemous for Siege, but it’s inoffensive so far.
  • First-person shadows: See your shadow? So can the enemy team!

There was a time when I would read a list of changes like that and think, “OK, but where are the two new operators and one new map that we used to get every three months?” But now I’m a bit older, busier, and aware that Siege has more than enough stuff. Maybe 73 operators’ worth of gadget interactions is as much as my brain can hold, and 27 multi-story complexes is more map than I’ll ever hope to master.

I like to think we’re entering Siege’s best years—seasoned gunplay, strong maps, impactful operators, less obtrusive (but still present) bugs, and a confidence in its identity so strong that it can take major swings like a 6v6 mode.

How to replay Elden Ring Nightreign’s tutorial to beat Margit and get a unique relic

by admin June 1, 2025

In grand FromSoftware tradition, Elden Ring Nightreign begins with a fight you’re supposed to lose. As is also tradition, it’s perfectly possible to gut it out and beat him anyway if you’re enough of a toxic Souls tryhard cool guy.

Nightreign’s tutorial fight even furnishes you with a one-of-a-kind relic for your troubles. It’s nothing to write home about on its own, but could be handy before you’re able to build up your collection. And before you feel like you missed out, there’s an option to replay the tutorial that’s buried in a menu in perfectly obtuse Nightreign fashion.

You can run back Nightreign’s tutorial at any time from the Visual Codex in the Roundtable Hold. That’s the book on the desk just to the north of the jar merchant in the western hall of the fort. You can also just pull it up and warp there by pressing the select button. Here’s the step-by-step:

You may like

  • Hit Select, go to Visual Codex, select Guide.
  • You want the first option under the first heading, and it should be what is highlighted first by default: Basic Rules: Play Tutorial.
  • Just press the X button (Square on a PlayStation pad) to start.

How to beat Margit in Elden Ring Nightreign’s tutorial

You’ll always be a low-level Wylder for this fight, but I was surprised at how many tools FromSoft gives you. I just blew through the tutorial my first time, but if you kill all the enemies and open both chests on the fairly linear path, you’ll be able to hit level six, have a pretty decent build, and two guaranteed uses of Wylder’s ultimate. Here’s a breakdown of all the tips and notes I have:

  • The best weapons in the tutorial (they’re guaranteed drops) are the Cold Katar and Rogier’s Rapier.
  • The rapier does good damage and automatically summons Glintblades (those floating magic daggers that auto-target enemies) every few seconds.
  • Use the katar to inflict Frostbite on Margit, then swap to the rapier.
  • The NPC Duchess you fight with actually does good damage, in addition to serving as a tank.
  • You should be close to ulting at the start of the fight, and you get a guaranteed extra use as part of the tutorial partway through the battle.
  • Ult Margit once right at the start, but save the second use to revive Duchess if she goes down.
  • You can revive once before the tutorial ends, and your souls are outside the boss room—you can run back to the grace and level back up before fighting again.
  • Margit will have the amount of HP you left him with, but Duchess will not be there to help you anymore.

Fell Omen Fetish stats and use

Your reward for all that is… fine. Honestly, the Fell Omen Fetish is more interesting than genuinely useful, but it’s a pretty good option until you unlock some of the really strong relics by beating Nightlords and Remembrances. It gives you:

  • Damage bonus after switching weapons.
  • Improved throwing knife damage [utterly useless].
  • Vigor +1.

The only one of those that really stands out to me for potential buildcrafting is the weapon swap damage bonus: It’s pretty quick and easy to swap the weapon in one of your hands for a quick boost every few seconds. I’m also curious if Executor’s character skill where he pulls out the deflect katana counts as a swap for the relic’s purposes—that would make it quite good on him, since he’s always switching between the cursed blade and his normal weapons.

Really though, I just like this as another sneaky surprise from Nightreign. It’s a nice encapsulation of the entire experience of being Nightreigned, in fact: Obtuse frustration, followed by a delightful surprise that just puts a smile on your face.

New Lego Lord Of The Rings & Harry Potter Sets Are Unique Bookshelf Decorations

by admin May 28, 2025

Lego couldn’t have picked a better reference to use in the Lord of the Rings: Book Nook. The 1,201-piece set features a buildable Balrog figure with a placard that reads: “You shall not pass.” This pays homage to the conversation between Gandalf, who is represented as a Lego minifigure, and a Balrog in the movie adaptation of The Fellowship of the Ring. In the J.R.R. Tolkien novel, the exchange is worded “cannot pass” instead of “shall not pass.”

Lego’s new Book Nook display models can be displayed in multiple different ways. After building the frame that houses Balrog and Gandalf, you can close it like a book, as shown above, and wedge it between two Lord of the Rings books on your bookshelf. Every time you look at it, the Balrog will remind you that you should probably read The Hobbit before The Lord of the Rings.

For big readers who own numerous copies of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, this Lego set looks like a cool way to spice up a shelf filled with collectible editions of Tolkien’s fantasy stories.

That said, it’s also the cheapest Lord of the Rings Lego set in print right now–by a considerable margin. The only other Lord of the Rings Lego sets currently being produced are the 5,471-piece Barad-dur tower for $460, the sprawling 6,167-piece Rivendell replica for $500, and the recently released recreation of The Shire for $270.

For that reason, the Balrog Book Nook could be of interest to fans who read all of their books on Kindle. You can display the Balrog and Gandalf minifigure with the frame unfolded. The base has flames extending upward on both sides of the Balrog. When opened, the Book Nook is 17.5 inches wide, 8.5 inches tall, and 6.5 inches deep. Alternatively, you can remove the Balrog and Gandalf minifigure from the base altogether.

If you need more Lord of the Rings books to keep the Balrog Book Nook company, check out our newly published roundup of new and upcoming Tolkien book box sets and budget-friendly collector’s editions.
