Bayonetta and Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya believes Japanese publishers are “more understanding toward creators,” as layoffs continue to rock the games industry

by admin September 15, 2025

Japanese publishers are “more understanding toward creators,” said Hideki Kamiya, which partly explains why there have been fewer layoffs in the Japanese games industry.

Speaking to VGC, the Bayonetta and Devil May Cry creator discussed the current state of the industry and the difference between eastern and western studios.

“What it feels like when working with Japanese publishers is that the development culture feels closer to mind, and they tend to be more understanding toward creators,” said Kamiya, who’s worked with multiple publishers on both sides of the globe.

“I think of game development as a kind of invention,” he continued, using the likes of Bayonetta’s Witch Time and Okami’s Celestial Brush as examples. “My goal is always to build in a unique mechanic that only that game can have. On the Japanese side, my impression is that they see you’re trying to make a new invention. They understand the struggle of trying to give birth to something new, and they watch over the process with patience.”

By comparison, western publishers prefer the “sense of safety following an established format”.

“That’s where I see there’s a difference with publishers,” said Kamiya. “For foreign companies, if you’re trying to invent something new, because the shape of it isn’t clear yet, there tends to be pressure, like ‘show us something that’s taken shape more’. And if you look at the games themselves, like how first-person shooters were the popular thing for a while, I get the impression that they feel a sense of safety following an established format.”

Kamiya used Scalebound as an example – the Xbox One exclusive was a joint project between PlatinumGames and Microsoft but was ultimately cancelled. Here, the team was building a system to control both a human protagonist and a dragon simultaneously. “But there was no clear reference or format for us to follow for a game like that,” said Kamiya. “And I think that’s why it was easy for some to have doubts.”

And while Kamiya doesn’t believe Scalebound would’ve been published had it had a Japanese publisher, he did admit “it would’ve been different.”

“Japanese companies tend to be more open to new challenges, and I think the conversations would have been more positive, like, ‘Okay, so how should we approach this together?’,” said Kamiya. “For me personally, overseas publishers seem to have a much stronger desire to see a finished product as quickly as possible. If it had been a Japanese publisher, I feel they might have given us more leeway.”

Speaking on his desire to protect his new studio from layoffs, Kamiya said: “We really have a deep commitment to keep the company going for [our staff], who we’re grateful to. Of course, I understand there are circumstances that force large companies to make layoffs, but for us, that’s a route that we don’t want to go down. We want to take care of our staff.”

Kamiya has recently founded a new studio, Clovers, which is developing a sequel to Okami with Capcom. Back in March he joked about resurrecting Scalebound.

GOG wants to revive more classic Japanese games on PC: ‘Working with Japanese partners often requires demonstrating both technical capability and cultural understanding’

by admin September 12, 2025

They may not officially be called Good Old Games any more, but GOG still sells plenty of games that are both old and good alongside new releases like Hollow Knight: Silksong. Speaking to Automaton, senior PR rep Piotr Gnyp emphasized that by saying, “GOG has been doing this for well over a decade, and we’re constantly reaching out to secure iconic games. Sometimes, it takes years. Diablo came to GOG after almost a decade of conversations. Preservation often means knocking on the same doors again and again, hearing ‘no’ most of the time, until one day, it’s finally a ‘yes.'”

That paid off with GOG eventually getting to re-release a handful of Japanese games that were difficult to get hold of in the west like Silent Hill 4: The Room, some of the early Metal Gears, and the OG Castlevanias and Contras. Capcom eventually agreed to let GOG re-release Dino Crisis and the first three Resident Evils, though it took “time, persistence, and trust-building,” Gnyp says. A re-release of Breath of Fire 4 earlier this year was one of the stand-outs of GOG’s preservation initiative launched in late 2024.

“Working with Japanese partners often requires demonstrating both technical capability and cultural understanding. In this case, Capcom treated these launches as full new releases, so we followed a complete QA and certification process, just like we would for a brand-new game.”

Gnyp went on to say that, while sometimes a game’s creators or an external partner is involved at this stage, “in most cases, it’s GOG handling the porting and compatibility work.” Games in the GOG Preservation Program get some extra care and attention, whether they’re packaged with fan-made mods or otherwise altered to run on modern operating systems, have controller support, and generally embrace the modern world.

“Our internal tech team analyzes each game,” Gnyp said, “builds custom wrappers or tools when needed, and thoroughly tests the result. That’s how we make sure the experience is authentic but also practical for today’s players.”

Not every game that makes it to GOG gets to be preserved forever. The first two Warcraft games were pulled by Blizzard, as were Adult Swim games like Westerado and Fist Puncher. Sometimes GOG has to remove a game from sale when it’s delisted for a rights issue and sometimes it’s because the publisher wants to sell it on their own storefront, but recently there’s been a more censorious group trying to get games removed from sale. GOG responded by giving 13 horny games away for free.

“At GOG,” Gnyp said, “as a platform devoted to Good Old Games and videogame preservation, we see it as a game preservation issue. Every year, many games are disappearing, for various reasons. Every game that disappears from distribution is potentially lost to game preservation efforts. It is particularly worrying when games are potentially vanishing due to external pressure.”

PayPal Founder Drops Bombshell On Bitcoin Invention, Is It Above Society’s Understanding?

Over the last decade, Bitcoin has been considered one of the greatest inventions. Even though it began as a tech asset, BTC has gained significant mainstream attention, with prominent figures, large corporations, and even countries engaging the crypto king. BTC’s foray into the financial landscape was so monumental that Peter Thiel claims it broke the mold of society’s understanding.

Bitcoin Is Beyond Society’s Ability To Process

Bitcoin has experienced exponential growth since its inception, with many analysts calling it the biggest macro trade over the last 10 years. While it is believed that the Bitcoin story is still far from reaching its climax, Peter Thiel, a well-known billionaire and PayPal founder, has once again underscored the revolutionary power of the flagship cryptocurrency.

Trending Bitcoin on the social media platform X shared an interview where the billionaire evaluated the monumental introduction of BTC and its significance. In the interview, Thiel described BTC as an invention so massive that society has found it difficult to understand or process its implications.

The PayPal founder’s audacious statement suggests that the scale and transformative nature of Bitcoin go far beyond conventional banking, signifying a paradigm shift in the definition of freedom, trust, and value in the digital era.

BTC, in Thiel’s opinion, is likened to a Tax Stagnation, where the society finds it difficult to comprehend its implications. “I think Bitcoin was a big invention, and whether good or bad, it was a pretty big deal,” the founder added. His remarks emphasize not only Bitcoin’s function as an alternative asset but also its status as a social phenomenon that is upending established structures and changing the way people talk about money around the world.

According to the founder, BTC was systematically underestimated for at least the first 10 to 11 years and was available for trade within the time frame. Furthermore, the asset experienced a smooth upward move in the same time frame and did not get repriced all at once.

Given that Bitcoin’s inception was monumental in a world where nothing big ever happens, Thiel stated that society had no way of processing it. He further drew a comparison to the historical launch of the Internet in 1989.

While it was launched in 1989, the project gained significant global adoption only in 1999. After analyzing BTC’s impact in the financial sector today, Thiel claims that the crypto king is witnessing the same explosive growth and recognition as the Internet in 1999.

A $200 Trillion Market Cap For BTC

Big investors and large firms continue to double down on Bitcoin. Amid this wave of institutional adoption, Michael Saylor, the founder of Strategy, has outlined the potential for BTC’s market cap to skyrocket. During a presentation, Saylor predicted that the BTC market cap could rise from a $2 trillion value to $200 trillion, representing a 100x growth.

Although at this audacious market value, BTC will still be lower than equity, real estate, and bonds, the chairman claims it will remain noticeable. Saylor has declared that Bitcoin is the emerging global asset and digital gold, which is probably 100 times better than Gold.
