TMNT Trilogy Limited Edition Revealed – 4K Restorations And New Bonus Content

The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie trilogy is coming to 4K Blu-ray for the first time this holiday season. All three early ’90s action films have been digitally restored by Arrow Films and will be bundled in two limited-edition box sets, both of which are available to preorder ahead of their December 16 release. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Trilogy 4K Limited Edition is available for $100, while the standard Blu-ray version is going for $95.

Like most Arrow Video releases, these prices are likely to drop before release day. If you preorder now, you’ll be eligible for any future discounts until Amazon ships your order. Keep in mind that Arrow Video Limited Editions are actually limited. The British distributor often reissues sold-out Blu-rays, but subsequent printings don’t have the fancy packaging and collectible inserts. At the time of writing, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Trilogy is the No. 1 best seller on Amazon’s movie and TV charts, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the 4K set sold out.

The 4K Blu-ray edition of the original 1990 movie has been restored from the original 35mm camera negative. The second and third films in the trilogy were restored from the original 35mm interpositives.

Along with native 4K (2160p) resolution, each film supports Dolby Vision and HDR10. For enhanced audio, the original movie has Dolby Atmos surround sound support. The sequels don’t support Atmos, but surround sound is still offered with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Original lossless stereo audio is also available for all three movies.

The Limited Edition includes multiple collectibles and premium packaging. Inside the limited-edition display box, you’ll find a collector’s booklet with retrospectives by Simon Ward, John Torrani, and John Walsh. Each film is packaged individually in a case with a reversible sleeve. The sleeves have original artwork by Florey.

In terms of on-disc bonus content, so far we know there will be new director’s audio commentaries for all three films as well as interviews with at least 15 actors and seven crew members.

Arrow Video said the full list of extras will be unveiled on September 26, so the box set will have additional bonus features and possibly more collectibles.

The 1080p version is made from the 4K restorations, so the films will almost certainly look and sound better than current Blu-ray editions. You’ll get all of the same extras and on-disc bonus content with the standard Blu-ray Limited Edition. You will be missing out on Dolby Vision and HDR10, though. With the price difference currently only five bucks, it doesn’t make much sense to buy this edition unless you don’t have a dedicated media player or game console capable of playing 4K Blu-rays.

35 years later, nothing quite compares to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The original movie is still an impressive showcase of practical effects, martial arts action, and it’s surprisingly dark in its execution of the source material. In fact, depending on who you ask, it might have been too dark, as its sequels were much more family-friendly in comparison. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze was more slapstick in nature, while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Turtles in Time might have jumped the shark with its time-travel story that saw the gang transported to feudal Japan.

In the decades since, the Turtles have starred in a handful of feature films and several long-running animated TV series. TMNT continues to be popular with fans of all ages. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series

The original 1987 animated series along with the wildly popular action figures turned Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into a worldwide phenomenon. The series amassed 193 episodes across its 10-season run that finally came to a close in 1996. The complete series released on DVD last October, and it’s an absolute steal even at its full $34 price. Right now, you can grab the 23-disc TMNT: Complete Classic Series Collection for only $26.59.

Impressively, TMNT followed up its original series with another long run from 2003 to 2009. The follow-up show went by several different names throughout its seven-season, 155-episode run. Whereas the original leaned into comedy, the follow-up series skewed more toward the serious, grounded personality of the comics. TMNT: The Ultimate Collection includes every episode and the Turtles Forever TV movie. In Turtles Forever, the Turtles save the multiverse alongside the Turtles from the original 1987 movie.

The franchise simply makes for good TV, and this trend continued with the 2012 Nickelodeon series. It ran for five seasons before ending in 2017 after 124 episodes. Last year, a new series called Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles debuted on Nickelodeon and Paramount+. All 12 episodes are available on Blu-ray and DVD, and Season 2 is expected to air in 2025.

Since the turn of the century, the franchise’s big screen outings have been a tale of two styles. The 2014 and 2016 live-action films were massive disappointments, but returning to its animated roots in 2023’s Mutant Mayhem proved to be a winning formula.

The Last Ronin II was published in July, so now’s a great time to check out this must-read series from the co-creator of the franchise.

Lastly, we’d highly recommend checking out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Visual History. This beautiful book takes fans on a tour through the franchise’s storied history. Insight Editions published a revised and expanded edition in 2024. You can get the 328-page hardcover book for $41 (was $75).

Limited Run Games requests Nintendo temporarily pull Gex Trilogy from Switch 2 eShop following compatibility issues

Limited Run Games has requested Nintendo temporarily remove its Gex Trilogy from the Switch 2 eShop.

The Gex Trilogy, which bundles together the cult-classic 90s platformer Gex and its two sequels, launched earlier this week across PC, PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and both Switch consoles.

But while things appear to have gone swimmingly across most platforms, the trilogy wasn’t working as intended on Switch 2. A number of Limited Run Games titles which run on its Carbon Engine had compatibility issues with the new console, however a recent firmware update released by Nintendo last night resolved the majority of these. But, alas, the Gex Trilogy was not one of them.

Sharing an update on social media, Limited Run Games said: “Since we do not have clarity on when Gex Trilogy on Switch 2 will be fixed in firmware, we submitted our own patch last week to correct the issue.”

However, due to the Juneteenth holiday across the pond, this patch is still awaiting approval. While Limited Run Games hopes to issue the patch early next week, it has requested Nintendo for the time being removes the game from the Switch 2 eShop.

“Thank you for your patience as we work with Nintendo to resolve these issues,” Limited Run Games wrote, before sharing a list of its games that are now Switch 2 compatible following that aforementioned firmware update.

The Gex Trilogy has otherwise been a successful launch for the team at Limited Run Games. Soon after its more modern debut, the publisher announced the PAL versions of Gex 2 and Gex 3 – which feature the vocal stylings of Leslie Philips and Danny John-Jules respectively – will be added in an update.

“We’re excited for European Gex fans to relive these games the way they remember and for others to hear them for the first time,” Limited Run Games said at the time.

Gex Trilogy celebrates “success” by adding missing feature European fans have been hoping for

Just a day after its launch, the Gex Trilogy – which bundles together the cult-classic 90s platformer Gex and its two sequels – has officially been deemed a success. And publisher Limited Run Games is celebrating the occasion by reinstating a conspicuously absent audio feature that should please European series fans no end.

The Gex Trilogy, if you’re unfamiliar, gathers together developer Crystal Dynamics’ original 2D outing (which launched for PS1 back in 1995), plus its two fully polygonal sequels; that’s 1998’s Gex: Enter the Gecko and 1999’s Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. Limited Run’s bundle isn’t a remaster as such, but it does include a variety of modern-day niceties, including native widescreen support, save states, and the ability to rewind the action.

Throw in a whole bunch of artwork and archival material, and content-wise the Gex Trilogy is probably as close to a definitive release as fans of the ageing mascot platformer could hope for. With one notable exception: it only launched with Dana Gould’s portrayal of suave lizard protagonist Gex, as heard in the US release, while the PAL version’s very different vocal performances were nowhere to be found. Until now that is.

“Thank you for making the launch of Gex Trilogy a huge success!,” Limited Run wrote in an announcement on social media. “It’s been in the works for a while and we’re finally able to announce that the PAL versions of Gex 2 & Gex 3, featuring the voices of Leslie Philips and Danny John-Jules, respectively, will be added in an update!… We’re excited for European Gex fans to relive these games the way they remember and for others to hear them for the first time!”

As it happens, anyone that owns the Gex Trilogy on Steam can enjoy Philips and John-Jules’ portrayal of Gex right now. Once the newly released update has been installed, players can select the PAL versions of Gex by changing the regional flag on the menu before starting the game. Limited Run notes these European versions are entirely separate builds, and save data is not transferable. Today’s update also remaps the default keyboard controls for all three games following complaints at launch, but Limited Run is yet to address other customer concerns, including audio issues and a lack of upscaling or anti-aliasing.

As for PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch, they’ll be getting PAL voices just as soon as the patch “has completed certification”.

Batman Begins 20 Years Later: Ranking Nolan Trilogy Characters

You can’t make a list about this trilogy without mentioning the Joker and his performance, which is so iconic that it outshines the hero of the story. It is an interpretation that, when first seen in a picture, initially received negative feedback. But now, all that has essentially been erased from reality, as if no one had ever had a negative thing to say about it. Heath Ledger’s Joker reinterpreted this character for a new era in our culture, and this Joker, not much different than other versions at its core, was perfect for this Michael Mann crime film-inspired world of The Dark Knight. It was an interpretation that changed the way the Oscars work. This take on the Joker is one of the first times I recall a superhero movie where people argue that the Joker is right.

From his messy makeup to his dark jokes about his scars he uses to scare people, the Joker is something Bruce just doesn’t understand, even with constant advice from Alfred. The Joker’s terrorism in Gotham shakes everyone to their core, from citizens and the government to even the criminals, as he attacks the soul of Gotham to prove his nihilistic views of the world.

The Joker attacks what is in this film the heart of the city—Harvey Dent—and shatters Batman’s hope. Batman loses in this film; while the Joker is stopped, he ultimately achieves his goals in the end. It wasn’t Batman who proved the Joker wrong – it was a convict. Batman and Gordon had lied to everyone so that the city wouldn’t fall apart, and in the end, Batman had to become the villain to the public. It’s rare to see Batman lose, but with the Joker, it’s the only time it ever makes sense.

Cillian Murphy’s Role in the ’28 Years Later’ Trilogy Is Coming Later Than We Hoped

Cillian Murphy is set to make his eventual return to the world of 28 Days Later within the upcoming trilogy that 28 Years Later will kick off this summer, but there are a few catches.

Director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) revealed vague details about the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer actor’s involvement to IGN. The upcoming trilogy expands on the world Boyle and Alex Garland (Civil War) started with 28 Days Later and its star Cillian Murphy, with a new set of interconnected stories. However, Murphy will not appear in the first film as it introduces a new central character: Spike, a 12-year-old boy portrayed by Alfie Williams whose family (led by Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson) finds itself in the thick of the post-apocalyptic zombie outbreak.

“Although each story completes itself, there’s a handover section to the next film as well. So it’s very ambitious. We haven’t got the money for the third one yet. It will depend how the first one does, I guess,” Boyle shared and explained that Murphy’s return is contingent on how the first two movies do.

“But hopefully if we do ok, they’ll give us the go-ahead for the money and for the third one. Everybody’s standing by for that, really. Including Cillian,” the director confirmed regarding Murphy’s participation.

Currently it’s planned that he will make an appearance at the end of the Nia DaCosta (Candyman)-directed follow-up 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which picks up on the immediate continuation of events from Boyle’s upcoming reboot sequel and is slated to open in theaters next January.

“He is in the second one,” Boyle revealed, “I shouldn’t give away too much. I’ll get killed.” But we can guess that his appearance will only tease the potential of the third film, which Sony has yet to confirm.

Boyle continued, “You know that thing about sequels, you want to push it on and take huge risks.”

“I have to say fair play to [studio Sony Pictures]. They did allow us to take great liberties with [28 Years Later]. They could have said, ‘Oh no, it needs to be more sequel-y. You need to rely on some of the ideas that are in the original. And what do you mean Cillian’s not going to appear in the first one? I thought you said Cillian was going to be in it.’ We said, ‘Yeah, Cillian is going to be in it, but not quite the first one.’ So fair play to them. They’ve put up with a lot.”

28 Years Later opens June 20.

The Witcher 3 Is Just $4 As Whole Trilogy Goes 88 Percent Off

For less than the price of a Mission Impossible 8 movie ticket, you can hear the wind howling across three hardware generations just like our dear friend Geralt of Rivia. That’s because The Witcher 3 and the rest of CD Projekt Red’s fantasy RPG series is just $15 as the most recent entry celebrates its 10-year anniversary.

If you don’t already own these games, what are you doing with your life? Or if you do, maybe you have a close acquaintance, or even a not-so-close one, who you’re looking to finally get Witcher-pilled? The Witcher sale on PC and console is the perfect time to do it. Running through May 25, you can get the entire trilogy for very cheap, including The Witcher 3 for as little as $4 on Steam and GOG which, quite frankly, might be pound-for-pound the best deal in gaming if, like me, you agree it’s one of the best games ever made.

Go up to $10 and, on PC, you can get 3‘s Complete Edition which includes the Heart of Stone and Blood and Wine DLC expansions, which are every bit as good as the base game, and in some ways even better. That version is $12 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, both of which received a “next-gen” upgrade in late 2022 that added a 60fps performance mode, better reflections, and tons of other improvements.

But don’t overlook The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings which is currently just $3 on PC and Xbox (the PS3 version never got ported forward). Less refined but also more linear than its successor, the second game in the trilogy still tells a gripping story of magic fables and grim politicking across a much less overwhelming map. You can get in and out in just 25 hours if you want, with smaller zones to explore and fewer RPG systems to tinker with, but still tons of great story scenes and character writing.

The Witcher 1 is also decent in its own way, though it’s much more of an acquired taste. Some still swear by it but I’ve found the fiddly menus, archaic controls, and opaque directions a chore to muddle through, even if the storytelling lays necessary groundwork for the sequels and goes to places you only ever hear about in the latest game. At just $1.50, though, there’s really no reason not to scoop it up with the rest. The Gwent-based campaign spin-off, Thronebreaker, is also just $4, or you can play the card game for free (it’s no longer updated by CDPR but is still maintained by the community).
