‘Wilder World’ Launches First-Person Shooter Game With $100K Tournament

by admin August 20, 2025

In brief

  • Wilder World launched a 10-player shooter game mode in “super early access” at Gamescom, featuring deathmatch gameplay in a recreated Miami setting called Wiami.
  • The Ethereum-based project is hosting a $100,000 tournament from August 25 to September 24, with five finalists receiving all-expenses-paid trips to compete in person.
  • This shooter represents the second release in Wilder World’s broader metaverse vision targeting early 2026, which will include racing, combat, mining, concerts, and other experiences.

Wilder World launched a high-intensity shooter game mode into “super early access” at the annual Gamescom conference on Wednesday.

The Ethereum-based project aims to create a broad metaverse of gaming experiences, which kick-started last year with the launch of the racing game Wilder Wheels in partnership with Lamborghini.

The PC-based shooter is a 10-player free-for-all deathmatch that blends first and third-person perspectives. Available on Epic Games Store, each match will last for 10 minutes, with players earning points as they battle in a fragment of Wiami—which is a 1:1 recreation of Miami, and the future foundation of its open-world metaverse. Gamescom attendees will also be able to claim Samsung-branded playable NFTs.

To celebrate the launch of the game, Wilder Worlds is hosting a $100,000 tournament with qualifiers running from August 25 to September 9, before a round of playoffs and finally an in-person final at an undisclosed location on September 24. The five players who qualify will be flown out to the final, all expenses paid.

Wilder World’s shooter game mode comes as the second release in its broader metaverse vision, which is targeting an early 2026 rollout.

Pseudonymous co-founder and Executive Producer n3o told Decrypt that the full game will include “racing, combat, resource mining, exploration, concerts, art galleries, and branded cultural experiences” that “coexist within a living, player-driven economy.”

“Launching individual modes first allows us to refine gameplay mechanics at a world-class level before bringing everything together into the open world,” they added.

The project launched an Ethereum token in 2021 and approximately six months later set its all-time high of $7.44, according to CoinGecko. Wilder World said that the launch of WILD was “foundational” to building the game, as it raised over $30 million to fund development. Over the past month, WILD has climbed 37% to about $0.40, but still remains down nearly 95% from its peak price.

“Think of [Wilder World] as the world’s first truly living digital city—where you can race, fight, build, trade, attend a concert, showcase your art, or launch your own brand.” n3o told Decrypt. “We are targeting early 2026 for the full open-world release, with Super Early Access modes like racing and FPS serving as the foundation that evolves into this broader vision.”

Harry Kane lauds Club World Cup: ‘Loving this tournament’

by admin June 21, 2025

Harry Kane has said that Bayern Munich’s Club World Cup win over Boca Juniors was played amid “one of the best” atmospheres of his career and added that he is “loving this tournament so far.”

The England captain opened the scoring with an 18th-minute strike as the 2-1 victory, played in front of a full Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, saw Bayern become the first team to qualify for the knockout stages.

Argentine football fans are renowned for their passionate support and the atmosphere they can create is considered one of the most intense in world sport.

Boca supporters have made their presence known in Miami with fans gathering on the beach in their thousands and singing in local Walmarts.

Asked if he was surprised by the Boca fans, Kane said: “No, not surprised. I expected them to be loud like they were but it was an incredible atmosphere to be honest. One of the best [atmospheres] of my career. Credit to them but also credit to the Bayern fans. They tried to help us as much as possible but it was hard with all of the Boca fans there. They made it a special night, they won’t go home happy but it was a great game.”

Bayern’s win followed eye-catching victories for South American sides over more fancied European opponents. Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain were shocked by Botafogo before Chelsea came unstuck against Flamengo on Friday.

FIFA’s revamped competition has faced heavy criticism but Kane said he has been enjoying the post-season tournament in the United States.

“I think it’s great to experience different teams and I think you’ve seen in this tournament already the South American teams especially have caused big problems for some of the European teams,” Kane said.

“It shows how big football is worldwide and how good some of these players are. You have to be ready for the next game, the next opportunity. I’m loving this tournament so far and hopefully we can be here for a while.”

Soaring temperatures in the U.S. have been a talking point with Borussia Dortmund planning to rotate their team to cope with the hot conditions they expect on Saturday, with head coach Niko Kovac fearing the impact of the midday sun in Cincinnati.

But Kane insisted playing in the heat is to be expected in summer tournaments.

“I’m not concerned [about the heat]. I think it’s part of football. You have to be able to adapt,” he said. “This is a great experience for me and some of the other England guys who are going to be playing next year in the World Cup. So, you know, something special about these kinds of Club World Cup games and next year will be the same.

“When you come off that pitch and you’re sweating and you’re dripping and you’re cramping and you’ve given everything from the pitch, there’s a special kind of feeling inside, especially when you win. That’s what we have to do.”

Asked for his thoughts on the tournament as a whole, Kane said: “I think, of course, it’s the first ones, so people are a little bit sceptical of what it’s going to be like, but if you’re playing the best teams in the world every four years, it’s going to be a really prestigious tournament in the future.”

Bayern face Benfica in their final group stage game on Tuesday.

Elite Tekken player “Joe Budden” kicked out of tournament seconds after beating a pro

by admin June 15, 2025

The Tekken 8 pools at CEO 2025 had one of the most bizarre and chaotic matches in fighting game history, a set where one player who named himself “Joe Budden” beat Tekken pro Bilal with a 2-0 win only to get disqualified from the tournament literal seconds after the win.

Fighting game tournaments can have some pretty bizarre moments with thousands of people packed in one convention center. People will often dress as their favorite characters to compete, build an insane custom controller, get coached by their dog, or rip their shirts off on stage.

However, “Joe Budden” had a brief match against Tekken pro Bilal that’s one for the history books. Joe’s known as a ranked grinder for Tekken 8 who typically plays online and uses a very aggressive playstyle with Claudio that’s often rage-inducing for his opponent.

Joe proved that this strategy can work against the very best, beating a top-tier player who traveled to CEO all the way from Pakistan without losing a game… only to get disqualified seconds later after he rushed backstage and threw a package of toilet paper at the commentators.

To be clear, this Joe Budden has absolutely no connection to popular rapper/songwriter Joe Budden. That’s just his username in-game.

He’s one of many North American players who doesn’t travel often but is an absolute menace online. These kinds of players can often get surprising results, even against pro players who compete full-time.

This was the case when he fought Bilal on-stage, with him taunting the pro player by Ki Charging (Tekken’s version of taunting) after every round he won.

He took the momentum from that first win straight into the second game, taking a 2-0 win over Bilal even if the individual rounds were very close.

He celebrated by putting some toilet paper in front of the camera and putting his finger in front of the words “Ultra Soft”, on the packaging. But what isn’t shown in the video is him rushing backstage and tossing the pack of toilet paper to the commentators.

“MF DOOM came backstage and tried to throw the ULTRA SOFT at me and spooky lmao,” said commentator MarkMan. Both him and Spooky were good sports about it, turning the ordeal into part of the broadcast and making jokes about it.

However, despite them taking it on the chin, tournament officials were forced to DQ him as is reflected in his tournament results. He would have been set to fight in the Winner’s bracket for a chance at top 24, but both his matches show up as DQs.

“He was DQ’d because he went to the backstage area (which is a big no no unless you’re working there), was being held back by one of the TOs and still pushed forward against warnings to do what he did,” Markman said of the toilet paper incident.

“We (commentary) have no say in what happens because we were still doing commentary. The event leads/organizers decided to take action based on what happened.”

Joe’s been traveling a lot this year, with him even going to EVO Japan to try and compete. He’s clearly a serious competitor, and he could have a shot at beating some of the best Tekken pros. As long as he keeps the toilet paper at home.

Twisted Metal Season 2’s Tournament Already Looks Insane

by admin June 10, 2025

Image: NBCUniversal

Ahead of Twisted Metal’s return, IGN gave a glimpse of a chaotic-looking second season featuring Calypso’s (Anthony Carrigan) tournament. We see less than two minutes of the upcoming vehicular carnage, but we learn a bit more about what to expect from the new season and how closely it may connect to the video game franchise.

Black Ops 7, Invincible Vs & More — Here Are The 5 Games That Stole Microsoft’s Show

Even in the short clip, we get some (literal) blasts from Twisted Metal past. Roach Coach’s exterminator van from Twisted Metal 4 is seen firing bullets from under a giant roach atop its roof. After last season’s finale showed a tournament photo of Mr. Grimm, one of the longest-running characters in Twisted Metal history, we finally get to see the soul-stealing biker in action, weaving around missiles being launched at him by a sadistically euphoric Sweet Tooth (brought to life with the physicality of Joe Seanoa, aka Samoa Joe, and the voice of Will Arnett). But, for me, none of those appearances elicit more nostalgia than seeing just quick glimpses of the half-man, half-murder vehicle, Axel, appearing in War Wheel form. There are no close-ups of the fan-favorite killing machine, but we do see him navigating those gigantic wheels around in ways we haven’t seen since Twisted Metal’s heyday.

According to the video’s description, John (Anthony Mackie) will reunite with his long-lost sister, Dollface (Tiana Okoye), who, in the first season, we learn is the leader of a group of female vigilantes known as “The Dolls.” Unfortunately, the reunion isn’t featured in this short clip of the new season, so we’ll have to wait for that show-shifting meeting when the second season of Twisted Metal premieres July 31.

Until then, rewatch the clip and rejoice in the fact that this is probably not even a fraction of the action we’ll likely be blessed with in less than a month.

World’s first robot martial arts tournament throws down in China

by admin May 29, 2025

China just held the first-ever robot-only martial arts tournament, where machines could be seen kicking and throwing punches at each other.

Earlier this year, we saw a humanoid model of a robot patrolling the streets, which reminded us all of Robocop.

With technology only advancing, it seemed only a matter of time until we could finally see robots fighting each other. On May 25, 2025, our wish came true. China held the first-ever robot fighting tournament in Hangzhou, Zhejiang.

The tournament had Unitree’s G1 model, which weighed 35 kilograms and was 132 centimeters tall, pitted against each other in a boxing ring.

China has just held the first-ever robot kickboxing tournament

Broadcast by China Central Television, the fights during the China Media Group (CMG) World Robot Competition lasted three rounds and were scored based on hits on the head or body. Landing one punch was equivalent to scoring one point, while a kick gave three points.

Five points would be deducted if the robots fell. On the other hand, if they couldn’t get up within eight seconds of being knocked down, they’d lose 10 points, and the round would immediately end.

When it came to the actual fight, these machines were actually controlled by humans via remotes and voice commands. As seen in the footage from the broadcast, they’re capable of punching, kicking, and doing uppercuts. Think of it as an evolved Robot Wars from the early 2000s.

However, it’s safe to say that their overall movement isn’t the smoothest just yet; some lost their balance after walking backward or kicking. Ultimately, out of four robots, one operated by Chinese tech influencer Lu Xin ended up winning.

Speaking to CCTV, Unitree director Wang Qixin said teaching robots different movements is “not easy.

“We used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to train them. First, we captured the data of the movements of some professional kick-boxing athletes, and then the robots can learn these movements in the virtual world,” he explained.

Despite the overall challenge, this won’t be the last time we’ll see something like this. The EngineAI Robot Free Combat Tournament was also announced and will be held in December. According to the organizers, this time around, the event will test not only the robots’ physical limits but also their intelligence levels.

China has held the world’s first robot martial arts tournament and I can’t think of a single thing that could possibly go wrong

The world’s first humanoid robot boxing match – YouTube

Watch On

We can surely all agree there’s absolutely nothing to be concerned about when it comes to robots and AI. So, it makes perfect sense to hold what’s claimed to be the world’s first martial arts tournament for robots. It’s all completely harmless fun and games, nothing that remotely brings to mind Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 gone rogue. Nope.

Anyway, the China Media Group World Robot Competition Mecha Fighting Series reportedly kicked off—literally—on May 25 in Hangzhou, China. According to Asia Times, the tournament included Unitree Robotics G1 robots weighing in at 35 kilograms and 132 centimeters tall.

The G1 is actually available to buy from $16,000, just in case you want your own killing machine, sorry friendly household bot, and it comes with 3D LIDAR and two-hour battery life. Inevitably, the robots run AI models trained on data capture of the movements of kickboxers for the tournament, but it’s not clear if that particular mapping is available to Unitree customers. We suspect not.

Each fight was made up of three rounds of two minutes each, with a punch scoring one point, and a kick three. Five points were deducted for falling over and 10 points if the bot failed to stand up within eight seconds.

Li Gaofeng, a researcher at Zhejiang University’s College of Control Science and Engineering, said, “combat fight is a difficult task for humanoid robots due to the intensive confrontation during the fight. Robots need to mind their movements and react to their opponent’s moves. All these requirements significantly challenge the robots’ algorithms, electronic parts and speed reducers.”

That said, the robots were not fully autonomous. Human operator teams controlled the robots, “in a human-machine collaborative way,” according to Chen Xiyun of Unitree Robotics.

If all this sounds like a robot zombie apocalypse in the making, a quick scan of the Youtube highlights paints a slightly different picture. While some of the moves are impressive, more often the bots are flailing around, punching at thin air or tripping over themselves. It’s more the stuff of comedy than nightmares.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Indeed, human overlords wielding some kind of remote controllers can be seen on the sidelines. So, it seems like the AI element is limited to the specifics of a given kick or punch in response to commands, very much like playing, ya know, a video game. We’re a long way off bots that can do their own fighting thing, if this tournament is anything to go by.

That said, this stuff is undeniably developing fast and probably wouldn’t have been possible at all, even with the existing caveats, a few years ago. Who’s to say these things won’t dancing around and then right out of the ring in a few years, fully capable of a deftly choreographed murderous rampage? What a time to be alive—for as long as you can outrun the robots…

GeoGuessr Bails On Controversial Saudi Tournament After Boycott

GeoGuessr Bails On Controversial Saudi Tournament After Boycott

by admin May 25, 2025

GeoGuessr will not be one of the games participating in Saudi Arabia’s Esports World Cup this year, after criticisms of sportswashing and the country’s poor human rights record. The competitive guessing game that’s popular on Twitch had previously agreed to be part of the event alongside Riot, Blizzard, and other game makers, but reversed course after a full-on revolt from its community of map makers. “You—our community—have made it clear that this decision does not align what GeoGuessr stands for,” the CEO behind the game announced on Thursday.

Nintendo Switch 2 Price Is Set at $450 for Now, But Could Go Higher

“I’ve seen your reactions over the past few days regarding our decision to participate in the Esports World Cup in Riyadh,” Daniel Antell wrote in a statement on X. “When we made that decision, it was with positive intentions. To engage with our community in the Middle East and to spread GeoGuessr’s core mission of let everyone Explore the World.”

He continued, “That said, you—our community—have made it clear that this decision does not align what GeoGuessr stands for. So, when you tell us we’ve got it wrong we take it seriously. That’s why we’ve made the decision to withdraw from participating in the Esports World Cup in Riyadh.”

GeoGuessr’s retreat comes in the face of an uproar among fans after it revealed it would be joining the competitive gaming event scheduled to take place over the summer in Riyadh. “We, the creators of a considerable share of GeoGuessr’s most popular maps, have decided to make our maps unplayable in protest of GeoGuessr AB’s decision to host a World Championship wildcard tourney at the Esports World Cup (EWC) in Riyadh,” Zemmip posted on the game’s subreddit yesterday. “The EWC is a sportswashing tool used by the government of Saudi Arabia to distract from and conceal its horrific human rights record.”

As Aftermath reports, GeoGuessr uses data from Google to test its players’ geographical knowledge, but relies in large part on community maps to funnel all of that information into locations and content for PvP duels that are more interesting to play and watch. Many fans signed onto the map makers’ boycott, with support for the blackout spreading through the GeoGuessr Discord, even as big prize pools in Saudi Arabia tried to lure the game’s top competitors.

The Esports World Cup features a $70 million prize pool and lots of flashy pageantry. Launched in 2024, it’s part of a growing pattern of Saudi Arabia trying to leverage sports, entertainment, and gaming in particular to diversify its economy and improve its national image which is otherwise tainted by everything from anti-LGBTQ+ laws to the slaughter of journalists critical of the ruling royal family. Esports pros in other scenes, from Valorant to Dota 2, have faced criticism for participating in that effort.

“Imagine the one dev with the balls to stand up to Saudi is GeoGuessr,” wrote former Overwatch League caster Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles after it reversed course. “Time for Riot, Blizzard, EA, and Epic to follow suit.”

8BitDo arcade controller

This new arcade controller from 8BitDo could be your next tournament travel buddy

by admin May 20, 2025

Arcade gaming has created some of the most immediately recognisable and iconic hardware in the videogame scene. Nothing quite spells old school charm quite like an arcade machine complete with a full complement of tactile buttons and switches. With arcade style fighting games still being huge in the tournament scene, these have continued to evolve into better, more portable and customisable hardware purpose built for the needs of the modern gamer. 8BitDo’s latest Arcade Controller range is looking to take that legacy to the next level.

These new pads are touted as being one of the most advanced of its kind, and despite the marketing jargon they actually look very good. Coming in two varieties, one specifically for Xbox and Windows PC, and another designed for Switch and Windows PC play, the new arcade controller sports a hot-swappable PCB with 16 Kailh Wizard low-profile mechanical switches. Pros and hobbyists alike can use this to customise the board to better suit their play styles and preferences.

They also support remapping, and the Xbox one has customizable RGB lighting. This is all done by the control panel at the top left, which can also configure modes like SOCD (Simultaneous Opposing Cardinal Directions) and tournament configs. You can also adjust these via included software, but it’s really cool to see full control on the device. The presser says it’s all easy and intuitive to configure, and having played with other controllers that claim the same, I’m sceptical, but hopeful.

You may like

This in combination with the size of the unit means it could be a great portable option for tournament goers. Its foot print is about the same size as an A4 sheet of paper and has a thin profile with a base thickness of 1.6 cm. This may change depending on which buttons you go with, but it’s a good baseline for slipping in the laptop portion of a bag, which should keep the unit nice and safe. If you want something even smaller, 8BitDo might have you covered there too.

To go with the portability it also supports 2.4 wireless, as well as Bluetooth, and wired connections. The wireless works with a USB receiver that magnets to the main unit, which is something I always look for in wireless devices. There’s nothing worse than losing these tiny little dongles just because no one thought to include a place to put them on the main piece of tech.

The buttons are another notable feature on the arcade controllers. Casting your memory back to the old days you probably conjure up a stick for your movement controls. But the fact is for a lot of competitive players, sticks are out and buttons are in. This is because sticks are less accurate and more likely to have input errors. They may feel or seem more natural or intuitive, but they present a false sense of analogue play when in reality they only convert their motion into button-like actions anyway.

The difference between stick and button gameplay has been so severe that many wanted to ban all button input for tournaments, saying it gives an unfair advantage. Of course lots of players still prefer sticks and do amazing work with them, so preference also definitely comes into play.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

If this all sounds like too much fighting game jargon, then something like the 8BitDo Ultimate with TMR triggers and hall effect sticks might be more your scene. This is modelled of a Switch Pro controller, and is a lot more of the standard affair.

If you’re into buttons, and also this controller it’s set to go on sale mid August. The standard version, aka the one for Switch and PC is expected to retail for €89.99 / £74.99 and the officially licensed Xbox version for €99.99 / £84.99. While it’s slated to release in North America, there’s no word on US pricing just yet, so we could be waiting to see what Trump’s Tariffs have in store for this device’s MSRP.
