Why is the crypto market going up today? (Sep. 18)

by admin September 18, 2025

The crypto market is going up today, Sept. 18, as investors cheer the start of interest-rate cuts by the Federal Reserve and as odds of exchange-traded fund approvals soar.

Summary

  • The crypto market is going up after the Federal Reserve interest rate decision.
  • The SEC is expected to start approving several altcoin ETFs like XRP and Cardano.
  • Futures open interest and shorts liquidations jumped.

Bitcoin (BTC) price rose to $117,500, while the market capitalization of all coins jumped to over $4.2 trillion.

Crypto market going up after the Federal Reserve cut

The main catalyst for the ongoing crypto market rally is the decision by the Federal Reserve to start cutting interest rates.

The Federal Open Market Committee slashed rates by 0.25% to a range of 4.00%–4.25%, while the dot plot pointed to further cuts in the coming meetings.

Therefore, while the rate cut was priced in, the crypto market is rising as the Fed was more dovish than expected. Before the meeting, most economists expected a hawkish cut because of the stubbornly high inflation rate.

Strong Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF inflows and the upcoming altcoin ETF approvals

The other reason for the ongoing crypto market rally is that the deadline for the approval of spot altcoin ETFs is nearing, and most investors expect the agency to approve some of them.

The odds of an XRP ETF approval have jumped to 97%, while those of Cardano (ADA) have risen to 87%. In anticipation of this, the SEC approved the generic listings standards that will allow them to launch without going through the lengthy process in the future.

BOOM: SEC has approved the generic listings standards that will clear way for spot crypto ETFs to launch (without going through all this bs every time) under ’33 Act so long as they have futures on Coinbase, which currently incl about 12-15 coins. pic.twitter.com/E9FXrniXRS

— Eric Balchunas (@EricBalchunas) September 17, 2025

Meanwhile, demand for existing Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs has continued rising this month. Bitcoin ETFs have added more than $2.5 billion in assets this month, bringing total inflows to $57.3 billion. Similarly, Ethereum ETFs have added more than $146 million in assets this month.

Rising open interest and shorts liquidations

The crypto market is also rising as the futures open interest rise and shorts liquidations rise.

CoinGlass data shows that futures open interest jumped by 3.28% in the last 24 hours to $227 billion, while short positions worth more than $402 million were liquidated.

110,500 traders were liquidated in the last 24 hours, with the biggest one being a Bitcoin short worth over $42 million.

Solve your own murder and recover your brain in Blanksword, a roguelike RPG with a demo out today

Solve your own murder and recover your brain in Blanksword, a roguelike RPG with a demo out today

by admin September 17, 2025

There are few occasions where a game tells me it’s combining two genres that typically don’t go together and it convinces me it’s worth paying attention to, but Blanksword, a roguelike RPG, is quite different. In it, you are Blank, an angel stabbed in the head, brain destroyed, who somehow managed to survive such an ordeal – albeit without any memory of who you were. And now, you are on a quest through a series of islands governed by “Literally God” in order to figure out your mysterious past.

Blanksword has been in the works for a little while now, but a Kickstarter for the game just went live today. Taking one look at the game tells you quite quickly that it’s “one of those” kinds of indie RPGs. You like, like Hylics, Felvidek, or the blueprint for many of them, and one that just recently got a rerelease, OFF.

Watch on YouTube

In fact OFF is quite an important frame of reference for Blanksword, as one of the game’s directors, Quinn K., was the original translator for OFF. Not only that, but OFF creator Mortis Ghost is responsible for the game’s lovely key art, and may even design an area of the game if the Kickstarter raises enough funds.

The mechanics sound quite interesting too. Combat, like many RPGs, is turn-based, and you pick up new moves as you go along, all of which vary from run to run. There’s apparently “hundreds” of moves to pickup, alongside different bits of equipment and items.

And then there’s that beautiful thing we call narrative design. With Blank not having a brain and all, you can pick up different Angelic Brain Parts, restoring certain abilities of his. One item might allow Blank to intimidate and heckle his enemies, another will give him the ability to tell if something smells bad. Others might let him understand more complex topics, or grant him the ability to haggle for better prices in certain shops. You keep these brain parts forever, but you can only use a few at a time to keep things balanced.

Best of all, alongside the Kickstarter the game has a demo out on Steam for you to try out. Truth be told, while I’ve had my eye on Blanksword for a good while, I somehow missed that it was a roguelike on top of an RPG. Playing the demo for myself, I soon figured this out, but the roguelike element blended really nicely with the RPG side of it. They aren’t genres you often see combined, and in some ways could even be contradictory, but in my short time with it, I think something quite interesting is being brewed up. Here’s hoping the full game pans out just as well.

Blanksword’s “one of those” indie RPG vibes make it feel quite well positioned for a future fanatical following, a thing that’s often both a blessing and a curse. That all remains to be seen of course, the game needs to get funded first.

A release date hasn’t been set just yet, but the team behind it has conservatively estimated a 2027 release window. You can wishlist it, and try the demo out, on Steam here.

Why Are Myriad Users Betting on the Color of Fed Chair Powell’s Tie Today?

by admin September 17, 2025

In brief

  • Myriad traders are betting on whether Jerome Powell will wear a purple tie at the September FOMC press conference—odds heavily favor Yes.
  • Purple has become Powell’s signature color, signaling the Fed’s commitment to neutrality over partisan “red vs. blue” politics.
  • The quirky market highlights how prediction platforms are moving beyond rate calls to trade on symbolism and style cues.

A peculiar but revealing market is getting serious traction on Myriad: Will Fed Chair Jerome Powell wear a purple tie during the September FOMC press conference?

As of now, the crowd overwhelmingly believes yes. But it’s not just about fashion—this prediction market taps into deeper symbolism around the Fed’s public identity.

According to a recent report by Columbia Business School, Powell’s choice of a purple tie is no accident. Brett House, economist and professor at Columbia, noted that Powell’s consistent use of purple is a part of reinforcing the Federal Reserve’s image as non-political in an era of heightened polarization.

Here’s what’s known:

When asked, Powell said purple was once just a personal preference. But over time, he began to see its utility: “Maybe not red. Maybe not blue. So I wind up wearing purple.” He saw purple as a neutral ground, signaling a lack of alignment with either side of the political spectrum. And lately, it’s become something of a signature.

(Disclaimer: Myriad is a product of DASTAN, Decrypt’s parent company.)

He explicitly frames this aesthetic (tie color) as helping project the message that the Fed is strictly non-political—not embracing party red or blue, but purple in between.

So when people are putting money on “Powell wears purple,” they aren’t just betting on wardrobe chance—they’re betting on consistency, signaling, and public messaging.

The Myriad market: Purple tie or not?

Here’s what the market looks like:

  • Question: Will Jerome Powell wear a purple tie during the September FOMC press conference?

  • Large sentiment says Yes. Significant volume is leaning that way. (Exact figures shift with time.)

  • Resolution rules: Must be purple or a pattern where purple is the dominant color. Shades like lavender or violet qualify; red, blue, or burgundy do not. The market typically closes shortly before the event, and official feeds/video resources will decide.

Because of Powell’s established pattern and public statements, the “Yes” side seems to carry weight beyond random guesswork.

Things that could upset the odds

  • Lighting/camera differences: A tie that looks violet on camera might register differently under stage lights, or in certain video streams.

  • Tie patterns/mixed colors: A tie with multiple colors where purple isn’t dominant could create disputes.

  • Last-minute changes: Powell could change his wardrobe plan; things like his stylist’s decisions, availability of a tie, or even mood might matter.

Mac Mini Sale: Get Into MacOS for Less Than $500 Today

by admin September 17, 2025

In the market for a new MacOS-based desktop, but don’t have a lot of space to spare? Amazon is currently offering discounts on both the 256GB and 512GB model of the late 2024 Apple Mac Mini (8/10, WIRED Recommends) with the M4 chip.

Photograph: Brenda Stolyar

Apple’s M4 CPU is at the heart of both versions of this miniaturized desktop, with 10 cores each for the CPU and GPU. Our reviewer Brenda Stolyar had no complaints about the performance, noting that it handled multiple browser tabs, chat programs, and other apps without lagging or slowing down. That’s good news, because the memory isn’t upgradeable by the user later.

Of course the main selling point with the Mac Mini is its tiny footprint. This model has slimmed down from the previous generation’s 2.6 pounds to just 1.5 pounds, and has only a 5×5″ body. That’s not just small enough to squeeze onto basically any desk or cabinet, but could even sneak into a bag if you need to take it with you to work or on a trip. The only real question mark here is the power button, which is mysteriously underneath the system, so you need to pick it up to turn it on.

You’ll have to make some compromises when it comes to ports, but it’s probably not nearly as bad as you’re thinking. The front has two USB-C ports with USB 3.0 support, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack for easy access. Around back you’ll find three Thunderbolt 4 ports, plus an HDMI connection for your monitor, Ethernet, and power, with USB-A now totally removed from the equation. If you leverage all the ports, you can connect up to three external displays, with support for resolutions up to 6K, depending on your configuration.

There are two discounted models, but there’s really only a minor SSD storage size difference between the two. The 256GB model is marked down from $599 to $499, and the 512GB model is discounted from $799 to $689. We think either one is a great option for casual computer users looking for a lightweight and compact option, but make sure to check out our full roundup of the best Apple Desktop computers if you think an iMac might be more your speed.

USA Today Enters Its Gen AI Era With a Chatbot

by admin September 15, 2025

The publishing company behind USA Today and 220 other publications is today rolling out a chatbot-like tool called DeeperDive that can converse with readers, summarize insights from its journalism, and suggest new content from across its sites.

“Visitors now have a trusted AI answer engine on our platform for anything they want to engage with, anything they want to ask,” Mike Reed, CEO of Gannett and the USA Today Network, said at the WIRED AI Power Summit in New York, an event that brought together voices from the tech industry, politics, and the world of media. “and it is performing really great.”

Most publishers have a fraught relationship with AI, as the chatbots that trained on their content are now summarizing it and eating the traffic that search engines used to send them.

Reed said that Google’s AI Overview feature has dramatically cut traffic to publishers across the industry. “We are watching the same movie as everyone else is watching,” Reed said ahead of today’s announcement. “We can see some risk in the future to any content distribution model that is based primarily on SEO optimization.”

Like other publishers, Gannett has signed some deals with AI companies, including Amazon and Perplexity, to license its content. The company actively blocks the web scrapers that crawl websites in order to steal content.

DeeperDive represents a bet that harnessing the same generative artificial intelligence technology could help publishers capture readers attention by engaging with them in new ways.

The tool replaces a conventional search box and automatically suggests questions that readers might want to ask. For example, today it offers as one prompt “How does Trump’s Fed policy affect the economy?”

DeeperDive generates a short answer to the query along with relevant stories from across the USA Today network. Reed says it is crucial that DeeperDive bases its output on factually correct information and does not draw from opinion pieces. “We only look at our real journalism,” he says.

Reed adds that his company hopes that the tool will also reveal more about readers’ interests. “That can help us from a revenue standpoint,” he said.

DeeperDive was developed by the advertising company Taboola. Adam Singola, Taboola’s CEO, says his firm developed DeeperDive by fine-tuning several open source models.

Singola says DeeperDive benefits from data gathered from across its own network of more than 600 million daily readers across around 11,000 publishers. He says the tool “grounds every answer in articles retrieved from our publisher partners and requires sentence-level citations to those sources,” and will avoid generating an output if information from two sources seems to conflict.

Gannett’s CEO Reed said ahead of today’s event that, together with Taboola, his firm is interested in exploring agentic tools for readers’ shopping decisions. “Our audiences have a higher intent to purchase to begin with,” he says. “That’s really the next step here.”

The 49ers started the season with a win, but lost quarterback Brock Purdy in the process. With Purdy unlikely to play, backup Mac Jones is in line to start in New Orleans. Second-year QB Spencer Rattler is the Saints’ starter, and helped keep them in the game last week before a late rally came up short in Arizona. Rattler started six games last year for New Orleans and is still looking for his first NFL win.

The 49ers and Saints kick off at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT) on Fox. Here’s how you can watch or stream it live, even if the game isn’t available on your local Fox channel.

The game will be shown on TV in the San Francisco and New Orleans areas (according to 506 Sports) and on live TV streaming services, but there may be cases where you’re blocked because of an internet location glitch. But there’s an option that doesn’t require subscribing to something like NFL Sunday Ticket or NFL Plus or searching the internet for a sketchy website: You can use a virtual private network.

Here’s how you can watch the game from anywhere in the US with a VPN.

How to watch the 49ers vs. Saints game online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the game locally due to incorrectly applied blackout restrictions, you may need a different way to watch the game and that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, plus it’s a great idea for when you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, nonblackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US and Canada, as long as you’ve got a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

How to watch 49ers vs. Saints in the US

Sunday’s 49ers vs. Saints game is on Fox. The good news for football fans is that Fox is available on all five major live TV streaming services, but not every service carries every local network, so check each one using the links below to make sure it carries Fox in your area. You can also stream games broadcast on Fox with the new Fox One streaming app.

Fox

Fox’s new direct-to-consumer streaming service launched in August. Fox One costs $20 a month or $200 a year and lets NFL fans watch their local Sunday afternoon games on Fox. You’ll also get access to Fox’s complete TV portfolio, including sports-related channels such as Fox Sports, B1G, FS1, FS2 and local Fox stations.

Sling’s new skinny bundle costs $20 and includes local Fox, ABC and NBC stations in select markets. It does not, however, offer CBS in any of its plans. It’s also worth noting that Sling Select charges an extra fee of $5 or $10 in select markets for Fox in addition to the $20 base fee.

Sling also offers a Day Pass for $5 or a Weekend Pass for $10. If you also wanted to get ESPN in addition to the local networks, you would need to get the $61-a-month Sling Orange and Blue plan. Read our Sling TV review.

Fubo

Fubo’s main package costs $85 per month, but it has a new skinny bundle that includes most of the channels you need for the NFL. This new Fubo Sports plan costs $56 per month ($46 for the first month) and includes Fox along with ABC and CBS (but not NBC) in addition to ESPN and NFL Network. It also includes access to ESPN’s new streaming app. Click here to see which local channels you get in your region with Fubo. Read our Fubo review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

For $83 a month, you’ll get all the major football channels with YouTube TV, including Fox. You can also add RedZone for an extra $11 per month. Plug in your ZIP code on YouTube TV’s welcome page to see which local networks are available in your area.

YouTube TV is also the exclusive home to NFL Sunday Ticket. But note that Sunday Ticket doesn’t include local games. You can only watch Sunday afternoon games that aren’t being broadcast on CBS or Fox in your area. If you want to watch all the football on Sundays you’ll need Sunday Ticket plus a YouTube TV subscription (or just get Sunday Ticket and then use an antenna for local games).

To get the full experience of your local games, NFL Sunday Ticket and NFL RedZone, you’ll need the YouTube TV base plan ($83 per month), Sunday Ticket ($276 for returning subscribers or $480 for new subscribers for the season) and the Sports Plus add-on ($11 per month).

DirecTV

All the live TV streaming services above allow you to cancel anytime and require a solid internet connection. Looking for more information? Check out our live TV streaming services guide.

An over-the-air antenna connected to your TV provides another option for Fox. The best part about antennas is that there are no streaming or monthly fees required, although you will need to make sure you have good reception.

Quick tips for streaming the 49ers vs. Saints game using a VPN

  • With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — experience and success may vary.
  • If you don’t see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
  • If you’re having trouble getting the game after you’ve turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.

How much do you know about the Itch/Steam adult game crackdown?

I’m sure you’ve heard that it’s going on but how much do you know about the Itch.io and Steam payment processor-related crackdown on adult games? What even is an adult game? It suggests one thing but can include many things.

Matt investigated the collateral damage on queer-themed adult games yesterday and received some incredibly powerful quotes in response. At its heart, it’s a story about censoring and controlling art, and if you whittle away what’s allowed and what’s not, where then will you find the edges sharp enough to pierce and make a point?

“We are sick and tired of how games are viewed as vile and derogatory by people who don’t understand them,” says Bobbi Augustine Sand of developer Transcenders Media. “We want games to be taken seriously as a medium. Games that include sex as a topic or content are no different from other media doing the same.”

“People make art about traumatizing events, taboos between adults, and even violence, and these are paid for every day by people who go to the movies or buy novels. Video games and interactive fiction have the same potential to transform lives for the better,” adds Queer Bundle organiser Caroline Delbert.

Lorenzo Redaelli of Mediterranea Inferno fame concludes: “Art is the most precious resource we have as humanity, and that’s something that concerns everyone… For years, indie authors have been working hard creating and fighting against the market to dignify the art of video games, and that also means producing video games for adults, where a video game is not a toy. Let us be adults.”

Donkey Kong Bananza DLC Adds Roguelike Mode And Is Out Today

Donkey Kong Bananza DLC Adds Roguelike Mode And Is Out Today

by admin September 14, 2025

During Friday’s hour-long Nintendo Direct, a new paid DLC expansion for Switch 2 game Donkey Kong Bananza was announced. It’s out later today.

Here’s the official trailer for the new DK Island and Emerald Rush DLC, which will be available after the Direct.

The other cool thing this new DLC adds is a whole new way to play Nintendo’s massive 3D platformer. If you have completed the main story of Bananza, you can actually work for the villain of the story and join his mining company. Doing so unlocks a new mode in which you smash up emeralds as fast as possible.

This mode is structured like a roguelike, with players completing runs to get higher scores. During these runs, Donkey Kong can find powerful artifacts that offer new, random perks. These perks offer up passive bonuses that can be stacked to help Donkey Kong earn more emeralds.

Doing well in this new mode, which is playable across the other parts of Donkey Kong Bananza and not just DK Island, lets you earn currency that can be used for buying and unlocking new cosmetic items. You’ll also be able to buy and unlock various statues to place all around DK Island.

This all sounds great to me and I’m excited to hop back into Donkey Kong Bananza. We might not be getting a new 3D Mario platformer anytime soon, but at least Donkey Kong has my back. Thanks, DK!
