FTX Repayments May Have Positive Market Impact This Time: Coinbase Analysts

by admin May 31, 2025

The FTX Recovery Trust will begin distributing over $5 billion in cash and stablecoins to creditors starting on Friday, with funds expected to land in accounts within the next three business days via BitGo and Kraken.

And there’s a chance this wave of repayments will help lift the crypto market, analysts at Coinbase wrote in a report on Friday.

It’s the second major round of repayments following the exchange’s collapse. The first, which began on Feb. 18, returned roughly $7 billion to creditors with claims under $50,000. That did little to lift broader crypto markets at the time, which remained under pressure from macro headwinds.

This latest wave of distributions comes as investor sentiment has shifted, the analysts said. Payments will arrive in stablecoins, offering recipients immediate on-chain liquidity, instead of cash and crypto. That could influence whether the funds are reinvested.

There’s also a broader sense of optimism in crypto markets, thanks in part to a rally in major assets and increased political clarity around regulation. Institutional players, in particular, may feel more comfortable acting on incoming funds, especially as Congress moves closer to passing legislation that would define the roles of U.S. regulators overseeing digital assets.

‘Scream 7’ Is Getting a Time Jump From the Franchise’s Previous Installments

by admin May 30, 2025

Details regarding Scream 7 are starting to trickle out as the horror franchise detours back into a story with its original remaining stars.

As original film scribe Kevin Williamson takes the helm of a Scream film for the first time, he’s bringing it all together with Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) as they encounter ghosts of friends and ghostfaces past, including David Arquette, Scott Foley, and Matthew Lillard.

Some of the Scream reboot core cast also remains, with Mason Gooding and Jasmine Savoy reprising their roles as the Meeks twins  But now there’s the development that the film will jump ahead in time for a “really cool reason” as shared by the film’s writer Guy Busick to ComicBook.com.

Busick continued to elaborate why the movie has become a Sidney-centered story, making the series’ original final girl once again the lead.

“I don’t want to give anything away about the reason [Scream 7] had to be a Sidney movie because there’s a really cool reason,” Busick told ComicBook. “In all these movies, you have to ask, ‘Why now? What is the thing Scream is commenting on now?’ Scream is always in a conversation with the audience about the state of movies, the state of horror movies and in particular, franchises.”

He shared that her participation was tantamount to the new installment’s themes. “We went to Neve Campbell and said, ‘This is why. This is why Sidney now.’ Neve was like, ‘Oh, I get that.’ I pitched Kevin [Williamson] this first, too. He got it and then I pitched the studio.”

He added that the new movie will not be set in New York, as the previous film was. It will also feature a time jump.

“I don’t want to be the one to spoil where it is,” Busick said; he also was vague on the time shift, but for seemingly less spoiler-y reasons. “It’s an unspecified amount of time [after Scream VI]. I might get contradicted by other people, but in my mind, more than two years. I would say at least two years. It could be two years, but I would say two years plus.”

Many are rightfully mad that Melissa Barrera was controversially pushed out of leading the franchise’s rebirth, and the repercussions of that might affect the interest with this particular sequel. It remains to be seen if bringing back so many past characters will be enough to compensate for perhaps wrongfully abandoning the Carpenter sisters storyline.

In the meantime we’ll be wondering if it’s back to Woodsboro we go! Scream 7 will hit theaters February 27, 2026.

All Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time codes

by admin May 29, 2025

Fantasy Life i codes are a great way to get hold of items without having to earn or make them for yourself. If you need a quick boost or you’re just starting out your new life in Reveria, then these codes are an easy way to get ahead of the game.

Although there aren’t many codes currently available for Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, more are likely to roll out in the future, whether as part of an event or to celebrate a game milestone. After all, it’s still early days for the game. It’s a huge plus that we have three hefty codes already. We do expect these to expire though, so be sure to redeem them as soon as you can. Here are all the Fantasy Life i gift codes currently available, and how you can redeem them.

How to redeem codes in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time

Before you can redeem your gift codes, you need to have reached the point in the game where you can pick your first Life at the Guild Office & Paladin Guild in Eternia Village. Completing this part of the quest will unlock the Gift option on your Weird Pad, which is where you can input your codes. Once you’ve entered a code, your rewards immediately appear in your inventory.

The codes are case sensitive as well, so if you’re met with an error message at first, make sure everything is in capital letters. You’ll also need to have an internet connection in order to get your rewards, which is annoying if you’re playing on the go with a handheld. But, I guess we can’t complain too much.

RTX 5090 falls below MSRP in the UK for the first time ever

by admin May 28, 2025

For the first time since its launch in January, Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5090 has fallen below its MSRP thanks to this discount at OverClockers in the UK, with broader savings also available in Europe, a sign that the great GPU drought might be coming to an end.

The RTX 5090 is the best Graphics card on the market if you want extreme performance and a price tag to match. With its 32GB of memory, enormous bandwidth, and excellent performance, all of its flaws mostly revolve around the fact that, up until now, it has been extremely hard to get hold of and, as a result, very expensive.

Now, you can buy one at OverClockers UK for £1,879.99. Less than the MSRP of the Founders Edition and £280 less than the list price of this particular Palit version.

Beyond the UK, there are also signs of a general softening of the RTX 5090 market across Europe. A similar dip below MSRP has recently been reported in Finland by VideoCardz. As with this UK discount, the margins of discount below MSRP are very slim. Rather, it’s the landmark moment of the card dropping below MSRP for the first time that has caught our attention.

Here at Tom’s Hardware, we’re observing multiple UK stockists with decent amounts of 5090s, and OC’s website claims it has shifted more than 30 of these discounted cards today alone.

5090 prices in the U.S. remain exorbitantly high, unfortunately. The cheapest card in stock at Newegg, for instance, is this $2,919 Gigabyte version, fully $900 more than the Founders Edition MSRP.

Mario Kart World reverse mode spotted for the first time

by admin May 28, 2025

It looks like Switch 2 launch game Mario Kart World will have a reverse mode for the first time.

Previous games in the series have included Mirror Mode as an unlockable extra, which flips tracks horizontally for a new challenge.

However, characters have been spotted racing in reverse in a Japan-only advert for the new game, suggesting a reverse mode will finally be included.

Mario Kart World – Nintendo Direct | Nintendo Switch 2Watch on YouTube

The advert includes footage of characters racing around the Mario Bros. Circuit in the opposite direction, when compared to footage from Nintendo’s Treehouse Live stream (thanks NintendoSoup).

It’s unknown yet how racing in reverse will be included in the game – perhaps as a separate option following completion of 150cc – but the footage appears to show a Grand Prix race rather than Knockout Tour, judging by the UI.

Of course, with Mario Kart World being an open world game, players will be able to drive in all directions in Free Roam, so it would make sense Nintendo would make use of this for its Grand Prix.

It’s not long to wait now until we’ll be able to play Mario Kart World for ourselves. It launches alongside the Switch 2 on 5th June – that’s next week!

Last week, Nintendo shared an interview with Mario Kart World’s developers. They confirmed the game was originally in development for the original Switch, but the open world design was better suited to the new console running at 60fps.

Switch 2 consoles are reportedly already out in the hands of players, but it requires a day one update to function.

Is the French Open the last time we’ll see line judges at a Grand Slam?

PARIS — Welcome to the last stand of the line judges. They are a dying breed in tennis, but at the French Open, the organizers are hoping to hold back the inevitable tide of electronic line calling (ELC) for as long as possible.

In almost every match here at Roland Garros, there will be a disputed point. The process is the same. The call is made, the player protests, the umpire gets down from their lofty perch, the player highlights the mark with their racket, and the umpire makes the call. It’s theater — and sometimes leads to an overturned call. Mirra Andreeva had one late in her first-round match with Cristina Bucsa on Tuesday, and turned, exasperated, to her box when her pleas for a call to be overturned were ignored.

This year, Wimbledon will adopt electronic line calling. The line judges will no longer be there, hunched over in between points, bellowing guttural noises when a ball swings wide of the line. The Australian Open ushered in this technology in 2021, and the US Open followed suit in 2022. That leaves the French Open as the last to have this human touch.

Roland Garros organizers have indicated they’ll continue to use people until the players demand electronic line judging. Julian Finney/Getty Images

Some tournaments on clay have adopted ELC and had early problems. There have been calls where technology and the human eye have not matched. In Madrid, Alexander Zverev took a photo of a shot from Alejandro Davidovich Fokina that he deemed to have been out, but the ELC called in.

“I will talk to the supervisors, I will talk to the ATP because, as I said, this is not normal,” Zverev said afterwards. “For a mistake to happen like this, yes, one or two millimeters I understand, but four, five centimeters is not normal.” Afterwards, the ATP even moved to clarify a Tennis TV post about this — pointing to how ball marks on clay can be hard to read, given it is a dynamic surface.

— Tennis TV (@TennisTV) April 27, 2025

There’s plenty of controversy in tournaments still using the human touch, too. Elsewhere, Aryna Sabalenka took a photograph of a call in Stuttgart during her quarterfinal against Elise Mertens. This was on a shot she felt was in but had been called out.

“Yeah, it was definitely in,” she said afterwards. “I understand. I mean, everyone can make mistakes, and I’m not the one who is going to be complaining with the referee … [but] if you make the mistake, I think you have to have guts to admit it and make a call.”

All the while, tournament organizers and the game’s stakeholders are creating educational videos showing why the human eye can be deceived by the mark left by the bounce and trajectory of a ball on clay. “I think it needs a little bit of adjustment,” Casper Ruud said. “I think there was a pretty bad error in the Zverev match in Madrid. I’ve seen some others. I thought the tutorial video that the ATP posted was [well] explained.”

2025 French Open Women’s Odds

While the calls for ELC keep getting stronger, Roland Garros pushes back. Gilles Moretton, the president of the FFT, says the French Open will maintain human line judges for as long as possible. “Regarding what happened in Madrid and what happened in Rome, the system … seems to be not perfect,” Morreton said. Morreton also talked about how important the line judges are as ambassadors of the sport.

“I think we are right to keep our referees and line judges at Roland Garros,” Morreton added. “For Roland Garros, we want to keep our linesmen as long as the players agree with that.”

Then came the qualification: “Unless the players are unanimous and come to us and say, ‘We won’t play if there isn’t a machine’ … then I think we’ve got a great future ahead of us to maintain this style of refereeing.”

But the noise from the players is growing. Novak Djokovic was asked for his thoughts on Monday. “Well, first I’ll say that I understand the people who are more traditionalists and who like to have the line umpires on the court. I think it’s part of our culture and tradition that has been there for decades. But if I have to choose between the two, I’m more of a proponent of technology. I would say it’s just more accurate, saves time, and just maybe also less people on the court.”

The players seem split at this point on the use of ELC on clay. Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Coco Gauff agreed and said, “If we have technology we should use it.” But she added, “I’m not going to be out here advocating and pushing for it. But yeah, if I had a preference I would choose to play on the court maybe where the robots are making the decisions.”

Ruud added, “I think I prefer … electric line calling, I think it works very well. I would say I prefer that. I think out of all the calls that are made, the margin of error is smaller with electronic line calling.”

2025 French Open Men’s Odds

There’s still some support for line judges, predominantly from the French contingent. Arthur Fils had previously issued his preference for human line judges, and Gael Monfils backed it up pre-tournament. “Quite honestly, we like to have things the old ways … I think it’s good to have line judges here because that’s the way I grew up,” Monfils said.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is also a proponent for the human eye. “That’s what makes clay special, in a way — that you can always review the shots. … Obviously, you can’t deny that electronic line-calling is the future, and everything is moving towards AI and artificial intelligence. But me, personally, I wouldn’t mind playing on clay with maybe the judgment of a human instead of a robot.”

And for others? Well, the flip-flopping between the two methods is just a little bit too much. “Honestly, I’m so confused, I don’t know, because I had a situation with the referee in Stuttgart, and also there was tricky calls with the Hawk-Eye system in Rome. So I’m really confused what I prefer, to be honest,” Sabalenka said.

Chances are that during the next two weeks, there will be a contentious, match-swinging call that increases the noise for ELC. It could also increase the noise for uniformity of using the technology across the four Slams. Roland Garros will continue resisting the pull of AI and robots, but for how long?

Computex 2025 made me realise I have no time for extravagant PC parts, just give me a simple, solid design and function

by admin May 27, 2025

I’m a staunch defender of the dull, the drab, the plain, the ‘oh yeah, I didn’t notice that.’ And nothing has reminded me of my proclivity towards all things seemingly mundane than Computex 2025 and all the resultant ooh-ing and aah-ing over extravagant tech.

I know, I know, tech shows are supposed to be gaudy and extravagant, and they are just so every year, but these consumerist fever dream pills never get easier to swallow. In fact, as I get older, it gets more difficult.

What am I talking about? Everything from AIO shelves for displaying figurines, a million-and-one screens attached to things that don’t need them—giant CPU cooler screens, cases with built-in screens, bendy cooler screens that move around for seemingly no reason—and just about as many convoluted PC case designs.

Now look, I’m not denying there’s something impressive about a Palico PC case with an RTX 5070 Ti built into its sword, but it’s impressive in the same way that lifelike wax sculptures of people are: They’re eye-catching and quite the creative feat, but you won’t catch me slapping one down in the home office.

And that’s just the good PC cases. Don’t get me started on the likes of those coffee cup-shaped monstrosities. Sometimes I feel like a lot of time could be saved by just pulling aside designers early on and asking, Why?

INWIN lâche un boitier de OUF, le CHRONOMANCY !!! – YouTube

Watch On

Listen, I’m not judging. Everyone’s tastes are different, and I’m not saying I’m right—but I am right.

It didn’t take me long to find some things I do like the look of at this year’s Computex, though. Upon discovering Noctua has created its own PC case, I had my boring equivalent of a normal human being’s excitement: ‘Ooh, a Noctua case for an all-Noctua build. I hope it’s very plain and brown.’

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

I wasn’t disappointed. It would look great under my plain and brown (but very stylish!) desk. Noctua gets it, y’see.

I also did find something shiny that I could get behind, this being the PNY Iron Core series of RTX 50-series graphics cards. But that’s primarily thanks to the underside of the design being very plain—just a flat, shiny surface, not too much going on other than the RGB arrow, which I suppose I can put up with if I must.

I wasn’t free from having my nostalgia muscles massaged, either. Silverstone’s new retro PC case got me longing for a time long past… but that’s hardly the same as an endorsement of a design on its own terms, is it? And anyway, it’s a beige, ’90s themed PC case—the whole point is it’s kind of plain.

It’s not all minimalist designs that got me almost-but-not-quite riled up this year, either. No, I was pleasantly surprised to find my favourite design improvements to be on the most boring component of them all: the power supply.

Computex 2025

Catch up with Computex 2025: We’re on the ground at Taiwan’s biggest tech show to see what Nvidia, AMD, Intel, Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and more have to show.

The first of these was a PSU with thermal sensors that can help shut off overheating GPU power cables, which will be an extra level of security for high-end RTX 50-series graphics card owners. But if that isn’t quite exciting enough for you, we also saw a PSU with a power connector that swivels, allowing you to orient the entire power supply in different directions inside your case for more versatile cable management.

Who needs anything more than that? Not I, that’s who.

Admittedly I am someone who is currently sitting with a Fractal Design Define R4 under their desk—a veritably plain slab of a chassis. So no surprises there. But come on, would you really take a side-panel LCD over a twizzly PSU connector?

Oh, you would… Well, I stand by it anyway.

The only real debate occurs for me when I see something like Hyte’s latest bubbly case. It’s kind of minimalistic, but equally… strange. Good job Hyte, you got me. I can’t fit this one into my neat and tidy dichotomy.

Bubbly cases aside, I think my black-and-white thinking holds pretty firm across the other products we saw this year. Now choose your side—the right one, or the wrong one—and prepare for Computex 2026.

The $325 Lord Of The Rings Deluxe Illustrated Box Set Is Only $146 For A Limited Time

by admin May 25, 2025

The Lord of the Rings enthusiasts and anyone who loves beautiful books should check out the incredible deal on The Lord of the Rings Deluxe Illustrated Box Set at Amazon and Walmart right now. The premium, three-volume hardcover collection released last October with a staggering $325 price attached to it. If the high cost deterred you from picking up this gorgeous box set last fall, now’s your chance to get it for a price that could be far easier to stomach. The Lord of the Rings Deluxe Illustrated Box Set is on sale for $146, saving you $179. This 55% price cut doesn’t have a listed end date, so interested Tolkien fans would be wise to snag it sooner rather than later.

You can take a closer look at the Deluxe Illustrated Box Set below. We’ve also included the 2024 Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Collector’s Editions for those who want nice copies of Tolkien’s iconic fantasy novels for budget-friendly prices. The Lord of the Rings Collector’s Edition Box Set is also on sale for over 50% off at Amazon. Lord of the Rings fans should also check out our buying guide for two upcoming Tolkien box sets: Tolkien Myths and Legends and The Great Tales of Middle-earth.

$146 (was $325)

The Lord of the Rings Deluxe Illustrated Box Set is a revamped version of a gorgeous collection first launched in 1992. Across the three hardcover volumes–The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King–there are more than 50 new pencil sketches and full-color paintings by beloved Lord of the Rings artist Alan Lee. All told, the box set has 1,332 pages, which makes it longer than most, if not all, editions of LOTR currently in print.

The page edges are sprayed dark blue on the top and bottom, and the side edges have unique illustrations of billowing smoke from Mount Doom’s eruption. Lee created new artwork for the covers, too. Each cover has a framed rectangular drawing in the center. The illustrations are inset on gray cloth board and surrounded by an elegant, silver foil-stamped border. Each book is quarterbound in blue leather, and the pages are sewn into the spine. You can mark your spot using the attached ribbon bookmark.

The silver-foil text along the spine and on the covers was stamped onto each book. The custom display case was constructed from cloth board and features stamped circular emblems designed by Lee. The case has rounded front edges to make it easy to remove each book. With all three books removed, you can peer inside the fully illustrated interior of the case. Lee’s depiction of Mount Doom’s eruption covers every surface inside the lovingly crafted slipcase.

Inside each book, you’ll find a large art card that can be removed and displayed separately. Along with three art cards, you get a pair of foldout maps of Middle-earth drawn by Christopher Tolkien, the author’s literary executor who edited, expanded, and organized many supplementary writings about Middle-earth, including The Silmarillion and his legendarium, which formed the massive 12-part series now known as The History of Middle-earth.

To be clear, The Lord of the Rings Deluxe Illustrated is much different from the popular 2021 version illustrated by Tolkien, but the premium design is reminiscent of the Deluxe Special Edition of the Tolkien Illustrated version.

$49.45 (was $105)

While the discount on the Deluxe Illustrated Box Set is quite good, $146 is still a lot of money for a single novel. But the great thing about modern editions of Tolkien’s work is that there are beautiful collectible editions available at various price points. Case in point: The Lord of the Rings Collector’s Edition Box Set.

Published just a few weeks after the Deluxe Illustrated Box Set, the hardcover Collector’s Edition Box Set carries a $105 MSRP. Right now, however, you can buy this handsome collection for only $49.45.

Once again, the Collector’s Edition is split into the three distinct parts that make up Tolkien’s novel: Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers, and Return of the King. Each book can be stored in the included display box shown above.

The Collector’s Editions have foil-stamped cover art, stained page edges, illustrated maps as endpapers, and built-in ribbon bookmarks. The beautiful cover art was previously featured in collectible editions released in the UK, so it’s cool that American readers no longer have to import the books to admire the artwork up close.

The box set also comes with an exclusive foldout map of Middle-earth.

All three volumes in this box set are also sold separately, though it’d cost you about $15 more to buy them that way right now–and you miss out on the display case as well as the poster. But you may want to pair the box set with the matching Collector’s Edition versions of The Hobbit and The Silmarillion, which were also published last year and are discounted close to 50%.

$68.34 (was $125)

For a markedly different Tolkien experience, consider picking up The Collected Poems of J.R.R Tolkien. This three-volume hardcover collection follows a similar design philosophy as The Lord of the Rings Deluxe Illustrated Box Set, so they would look great next to each other on a display shelf.

This collection contains poems composed by Tolkien the teenager as well as Tolkien the aging literary giant. The nearly 200 poems across the box set’s 1,700 pages were written across nearly 70 years. The poetry is accompanied by commentary about the author’s work and life from two Tolkien scholars.

Just know that this collection isn’t related to Lord of the Rings or Middle-earth in general. While Tolkien included poetry in his famous fantasy novels, the verse in his Middle-earth novels barely scratches the surface of Tolkien’s lifelong love of poetry.

If you like the idea of reading poetry by Tolkien, you should also check out the upcoming hardcover box set titled Tolkien Myth and Legends. Releasing August 19, this eye-catching collection includes four books of epic poems. Two books feature Tolkien’s own poetry: a narrative poem about King Arthur and a Norse mythology-inspired classic poem. The set also comes with Tolkien’s personal translations of Beowulf and three other classic poems.

The History of Middle-earth Box Sets 1-4, Tolkien Myths and Legends, The Great Tales of Middle-earth

The aforementioned History of Middle-earth series edited and compiled by Christopher Tolkien was reissued as 15 stunning hardcover books spread across four box sets, each of which is on sale for very low prices right now. Box Set 1 comes with four books, including The Silmarillion, and is on sale for only $63 at Amazon (nearly 50% off).

Tolkien Myths and Legends is considered the fifth entry in William Morrow’s current series of hardcover Tolkien box sets. The books in these unique box sets have reversible dust jackets featuring the classic cover art on one side and beautiful wraparound illustrations on the other. Each set comes with a slipcase with exclusive, full-color artwork covering every side.

The sixth set in the series, The Great Tales of Middle-earth Box Set, will be published on August 19. If you’re interested in reading Tolkien’s last three Middle-earth novels, you should also know that The Great Tales of Middle-earth received a different hardcover box set back in 2018, and you can buy it for only $50 (was $100) at the moment–less than half the price of the 2025 hardcover box set. Similarly, you can get the entire History of Middle-earth series in a three-book hardcover set for substantially less than the price of the newer editions.

Tolkien Illustrated Editions

And if you want to compare the Deluxe Illustrated Box Set to the Tolkien Illustrated Editions, we’ve included links to both the standard and Deluxe Special Editions of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion. The Tolkien Illustrated Editions contain sketches, paintings, and maps drawn by the author. Each book has sprayed edges with elvish script, foil-stamped cover art, ribbon bookmarks, and a pair of removable, foldout maps. The Deluxe Special Editions also come with other goodies, such as a slipcase, removable art pieces, and booklets. The Special Editions have cloth board covers quarterbound in leather and ribbing on the spines.

Level-5 are so pleased with how Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is doing they’re giving away a free bit of DLC

by admin May 25, 2025

I wasn’t expecting it personally, but it seems like the new hotness is Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, ‘ey? Sure, it’s from a studio like Level-5, who’ve made massive games from Yo-kai Watch to Professor Layton. I just didn’t expect a sequel to a 3DS game from over a decade ago to do so well. In fact, it appears Level-5 is so happy with how much money everyone’s given them, it’ll be giving away a free bit of DLC for the RPG at some point in the future.

The DLC is called “Update the World!” which is a wonderful little title, and a sentence I’d expect from some anime villain obsessed with tech who wants to install a new operating system on Earth, or something. In terms of what it’ll include, there’ll be “new content designed to make use of high-rarity weapons obtained from Treasure Groves and other sources.”

Maybe that’ll mean more quests, or side activities, I’m not entirely sure, it’s pretty vague. Though perhaps not as vague as the fact that there’ll be “new recipes added” in the DLC too. Yummy, I love recipes! Level-5 also promised that they will “continue to update and improve Fantasy Life i so that players can enjoy its world more comfortably and for an even longer time.”

As it stands, there’s no release date for this bit of DLC, kind of seems like a “we sold lots of copies so we can announce this but we’re not quite ready for it yet” type of announcement. Either way, there’s already lots to be getting on with given you’ve got 14 lives to choose from, an existentially terrifying point that I won’t spend too much time on.

3D Is Back. This Time, You Can Ditch the Glasses

by admin May 25, 2025

Samsung says it performed an internal survey among what it calls its “hardcore gaming” demographic to find out what they wanted in a next-generation gaming display. This demographic is marked by a willingness to pay thousands for the latest PC gaming gear. Sixty-two percent said they expected the next generation to include advanced immersion—the perfect place to test the waters with 3D tech.

“As we’re looking at the demographic, or just the overall consumer base for monitors, especially when you’re talking about premium monitors over $1,000, the overwhelming majority is spending it on gaming,” You says. That’s important because these first 3D gaming monitors don’t come cheap. Despite the surprisingly limited game support at launch, the Samsung Odyssey 3D costs a cool $2,000.

“We’re in that early adopter stage, right? The sticker price is a little bit of a shock to most consumers,” he says. “But we feel like once we get people into the 3D ecosystem, we’ll get more game studios and developers brought into it because they see the total accessible market increasing.”

When it comes down to it, gamers are willing to spend more on an immersive experience, and that’s going to buy time for the rest of the 3D ecosystem to catch up.

As You notes, even the Odyssey 3D is “so much more than just a 3D gaming monitor.” Whether it’s YouTube, Zoom, or even just full-screen photos, the display can convert 2D into 3D using machine-learning algorithms, adding an artificial layer of depth that wasn’t previously there. While the effect is not as convincing as in games, and DRM limitations restrict the content, it’s an impressive tech demo nonetheless. More than that, AI is enabling 3D to overcome the need for tailor-made 3D content, another one of the main problems with 3D tech in the past. It’s planting the seeds for broader uses that a more mainstream audience can benefit from.

Fattal says gaming is his second-favorite use case for 3D. “3D has that power to convey the human connection a lot better than on a flat screen,” he says, explaining that taking 3D photos and videos of his kids was what made him truly believe in the power of 3D. His dream is a world in which all videos can be taken and experienced in 3D. “Our goal is to end up completely standard on all devices, but especially on cell phones, so that people can chat and take pictures and videos, and share on social media—and all of that should be in 3D.”

It’s an ambitious aspiration, and one echoed by Silicon Valley titans. Apple and Google have been touting spatial photos and videos with their respective mixed-reality ecosystems, where you’ll be able to experience memories with depth. Google also recently showed off Google Beam—a way to convert people in video calls to appear more 3D and lifelike for a more personal touch.

The Apple Vision Pro could never exist without gamers willing to try out the early versions of VR, even with the severe lack of game libraries and uncomfortable headsets. There have always been other use cases for VR, but gaming has always been the main draw. It’s too early to say whether this new era of 3D will have more success going beyond gaming than VR has.

Don’t expect 3D TVs to make a comeback anytime soon—the current implementation makes it so that the 3D tech only works for one person. But for now, companies like Samsung have much brighter hopes for the proliferation of 3D, promising to “triple down” on its 3D monitor lineup in the next year or two. That’s a serious vote of confidence.
