Hotel Barcelona Review – Check Out Any Time You’d Like

I repeatedly asked myself one question while playing Hotel Barcelona: Why?

Why is the demonic spirit of a serial killer possessing a timid US Marshal? Why is the promising-looking combat so bland? Why is the storytelling so half-baked? Why does the game look as though it emerged from a time capsule from the mid-2000s? I don’t have the answers to most of these questions, but I know one thing: This collaboration between White Owls, the studio led by Deadly Premonition mastermind Swery, and Suda51 of Grasshopper fame, is a bad time. It also encapsulates the main critique of both creators’ works: an abundance of surreal humor and style, but severely lacking in polished substance.

Hotel Barcelona is a 2D action roguelike that sees players fighting across the grounds of the eponymous cursed hotel. As Justine, you’re a government agent looking to avenge your father’s murder by taking down a powerful witch with the supernatural assistance of Dr. Carnival, a murderous spirit inhabiting Justine’s body. This intriguing setup, and the dynamic between the shy Justine and ruthless Carnival, can lead to mildly amusing moments, but the payoff is neither interesting nor entirely coherent. Unfortunately, the action isn’t much better.

 

The game’s roguelike runs consist of time-limited romps through four stages of a level, which is assigned a random weather effect and time of day. You have upwards of two or three minutes to explore a stage before exiting one of several doors to the next area, granting bonuses like increased attack speed or health regeneration. I like that runs are mercifully short, because the mediocre combat lacks enough punch or finesse to make Justine’s revenge quest satisfying.

Slicing foes apart with various weapons like knives, axes, or buzzsaws, or gunning them down with pistols, shotguns, and other ranged options, feels just south of “fine” even after unlocking combos and other upgrades from a skill tree. To its credit, Hotel Barcelona has a few novel ideas. Weather comes into play by affecting how long it takes to build up Dr. Carnival’s special attack, a meter filled by coating Justine in the blood of the foes she slays. Rainy weather rinses the blood off her body, making it tougher to build toward unleashing this screen-filling attack to add a decent challenge.

One interesting concept is playing alongside the “ghosts” of your previous runs through a stage, who can attack any enemies caught in their predetermined path. These can be helpful, but are more unreliable than anything. You can also be invaded and killed by other players (and do the same to them) Dark Souls-style, but this happens so infrequently (possibly due to a low player count) that it’s virtually a non-factor. When someone did arrive and took my life, I cursed them for extending my time in Hotel Barcelona’s world.

The bland assortment of enemies similarly lacks punch, and some unleash infuriatingly cheap attacks that can stun-lock Justine to an early grave. Boss battles, such as ones against a deranged butcher or an alien social media influencer, commit the same sins, and I never looked forward to facing them time and again to farm upgrade resources. While the combat is unremarkable at worst, other gameplay diversions, such as a platforming sequence across a crumbling arena or a QTE-driven surfing segment, are outright terrible due to poor controls and a dated presentation.

Despite Hotel Barcelona seemingly taking the Hades route of advancing the story and unlocking new character conversations between runs, non-critical threads go nowhere, even though some present interesting personalities. I hoped to learn more about Barcelona’s strange patrons, such as an ear-obsessed bartender, a friendly monster living in Justine’s closet, and an unsettlingly chipper receptionist, so I was disappointed that their character development gets cut off at the knees so unexpectedly as the game approaches its climax. Justine’s quest to collect the hearts of three bosses to face the witch is shockingly short, padded by an unnecessary and tedious story mission to recollect these hearts by replaying the same (albeit shorter) stages. This culminates in an insultingly abrupt ending that sheds practically no light on the witch’s motives, the larger backstories of the hotel patrons, and Dr. Carnival’s true nature, which is only briefly teased.  

 

Perhaps these threads become more fleshed out after reaching the two unlockable, seemingly optional worlds, but the secret method of reaching them appears annoyingly vague. And believe me, I tried. I even replayed the final section to reach the game’s one big decision, then made the opposite choice I had before, only to find there is no choice. You’re forced into making the same decision no matter what, offering another example of how Hotel Barcelona shoots its promising narrative ideas in the foot at every turn. Whatever remaining secrets may lie beneath, I have no interest in seeing them.

I know the charm of Swery games (and, to a lesser extent, Suda51 titles) is how utterly bizarre they are, but any chuckles Hotel Barcelona’s quirky sense of humor may elicit were drowned under a sea of head-scratching and outright bad design and storytelling decisions. No matter how many secrets it may have or surreal moments it assaults players with, it’s all wrapped around a dull, limited, and flawed core gameplay experience. You don’t have to go home, but you shouldn’t stay here.

Monthly perp trading surpass $1t for the first time

In September, monthly trading volume on Perp DEXs broke through $1 trillion for the first time in history, reaching as high as $1.14 trillion amidst the boom in perp trading.

According to data from DeFi Llama, trading volume for perpetual decentralized exchanges exceeded $1 trillion in monthly trading volume for the first time ever in September 2025. Compared to the previous month of August, this number indicates a nearly 50% month-over-month surge from just $766 billion.

The surge in monthly trading volume was driven by several decentralized protocols, such as Aster (ASTER), Hyperliquid (HYPE), and Lighter each crossing the $150 billion mark in trading volume over the past 30 days. In the past week alone, perp trading has climbed up by 161%.

Aster leads the charge with a monthly perp volume of $493.61 billion, making up for nearly half of the total perp trading volume in September alone. This number is followed by Hyperliquid with $280.7 billion in the same period. Lighter is in third place with $165 billion in monthly trading volume.

Within just a month, Aster managed to dethrone Hyperliquid as the dominating market holder of perpetual futures. What took Hyperliquid one year to achieve, Aster was able to do in just a few months. Back in August 2025, analysts estimated that Hyperliquid accounted for 80% of the total perp trading market.

In the past 24 hours, Aster’s perp volume has reached $80.47 billion. Meanwhile, Hyperliquid’s volume is only at $9.47 billion. The large nealy-1000% gap between protocols showcases the rapid growth of Aster DEX in the crypto space after gaining support from former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao.

Perp trading on the rise

Compared to just a year ago in September 2024, the trading volume for perpetual futures was still stuck at around $131 billion. In just the span of a year, that number surpassed $1 trillion for the first time in history due to advancements made in the space.

The boom in perpetual trading can be attributed to the many new features introduced through Aster, Hyperliquid and many more DEX platforms. Many Perp DEXs run on high-throughput chains or Layer-2 solutions, reducing latency, lowering gas fees, and enhancing execution speed.

As a result, barriers that once made derivatives trading unattractive on-chain have been diminished.

Another key driver is the rewards model deployed by DEXs to attract more users to trade on their platforms. Most recently, more protocols are using token incentives, yield sharing, revenue redistributions, and “point-farming” schemes to bootstrap volume and liquidity on their respective platforms.

Projects like Aster have leaned heavily on this kind of incentive engineering to rapidly grow trading activity and attract users.

Not only that, centralized exchanges like OKX have begun to integrate support for DEX trading, in hopes of luring in more users with a hybrid model that combines CEX and DEX functionalities. At the moment, the program is still in its limited public beta test phase.

According to the announcement, the exchange plans to distribute 1,000 experience codes worldwide, giving users the chance to test the DEX support feature with zero trading fees. Transactions will be executed directly within the interface of the OKX exchange.

It is hard to overstate how magical the original Super Mario Galaxy felt when it launched on Wii back in 2007. Gravity-defying levels, soaring orchestrated music, and a sense of wonder that still stands out alongside the other staples in the platforming genre, almost 20 years later.

In celebration of the Italian plumber’s 40th anniversary, Nintendo has re-released this classic alongside Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 in one enhanced package.

I was curious to see if these classics could shine just as brightly two decades later. The good news is they’re as magical as ever, offering the same incredible journeys now with gorgeous visuals and the ability to play the sequel on the go for the first time ever.

Cosmic performance

On Switch 2, both games look fantastic. Docked, you get crisp 4K resolution that makes every planet sparkle. Handheld mode delivers smooth 1080p visuals that feel perfectly tuned for portable play.

I encountered no performance hiccups across either adventure. Frame rates remain locked, load times are snappy, and the vibrant art style still feels timeless. These games were stunning on Wii, but the extra fidelity here makes them genuinely pop on modern displays, like my Samsung S90D OLED TV.

It is worth noting that Super Mario Galaxy did appear on Switch once before, as part of the limited Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection. That version didn’t reinvent the wheel, but it gave Switch users access to the game alongside Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Unfortunately, Nintendo no longer sells 3D All-Stars, an odd choice that has led to inflated prices on the second-hand market.

This new Switch 2 release offers the same core experience, now enhanced with sharper visuals, better performance, and bundled alongside Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the first time on modern hardware. For fans who missed out on 3D All-Stars, or who simply want the most definitive way to play, this collection is a clear step forward.

The sound design has also aged remarkably well. Koji Kondo’s orchestral score is given room to breathe with a cleaner mix, and it feels cinematic in a way that very few modern platformers achieve.

Hearing the soundtrack through my Sonos Arc Ultra is a reminder of just how ambitious Nintendo was with these titles and genuinely brought me back to my childhood.

In my time playing this game, I’ve been listening to both games’ soundtracks on repeat as I work. In fact, as I write this review, I’m bopping my head to Gusty Garden Galaxy – gorgeous.

Galaxies intertwined

The core adventures remain intact, so if you’ve played through either game recently, you might not want to jump back in. Nintendo has a solution, however, offering both games as a complete package or as individual titles, perfect for those who luckily own the aforementioned 3D All-Stars.

Super Mario Galaxy’s planet-hopping platforming eases players into its gravity-bending tricks, while Super Mario Galaxy 2 embraces creativity and challenge right from the start. Having them bundled together only highlights how well the sequel doubled down on experimentation.

Galaxy 2 adds Yoshi to the mix, alongside power-ups like the Cloud Flower and Rock Mushroom, each of which introduces new mechanics that feel clever even today. Returning to these levels reminded me how bold Nintendo was in the Wii era, layering complexity onto Mario without losing accessibility.

Nintendo has added some small but welcome touches for this new release. In Super Mario Galaxy, there is an additional chapter in Rosalina’s picture book that fleshes out her story in a way longtime fans will appreciate.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 goes a step further with a completely new tale in its own picture book, offering fresh lore and a reason to revisit the Comet Observatory between levels. These are not game-changing additions, but they add warmth and make this edition feel more than a simple upscaled port.

Wii controls reimagined

As someone who hasn’t played 3D All-Stars in nearly five years, one of my biggest questions going back to these games was how well the controls would translate to modern hardware. The original games were designed with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk in mind, leaning heavily on motion controls.

Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 have some of, if not the, best video game soundtracks of all time. It has been a magical experience reliving my childhood through gorgeous orchestral music that makes me feel just like that famous scene from Pixar’s Ratatouille.

On Switch 2, motion is still present with the Joy-Con, but it feels far less intrusive than it once did. You can play comfortably in handheld, docked, or with a Pro Controller, and I found myself gravitating to the latter for longer sessions.

All you need to do is hold down ZR and use the gyro in the Pro Controller to pick up Star Bits. In fact, I much prefer it to the Wii experience, but that might be my cynical 30-year-old brain that no longer appreciates a gimmick.

A trip down memory lane

The biggest compliment I can give Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Nintendo Switch 2 is that these adventures feel as fresh today as they did at launch in 2007 and 2020, respectively.

The level design is inventive and playful, constantly surprising you with new mechanics that rarely outstay their welcome. Few platformers manage to strike the same balance of accessibility and depth.

Nintendo has not tinkered much beyond resolution, performance, and the new story content, but that restraint works here. The design is so strong that all it needed was a modern coat of paint.

Mario’s journey through the stars is still a cosmic marvel

While part of me would have liked to see some new content like we’ve seen in the past with the addition of Bowser’s Fury in the remaster of Super Mario 3D World, I’ve just enjoyed the simplicity of replaying these classics in 4k.

If you have never played Super Mario Galaxy or its sequel, this is the definitive way to experience them. And if you have, the combination of rock-solid performance, upgraded visuals, and new story content makes these experiences worth revisiting.

Few platformers feel as inventive, joyful, or downright magical as Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Nearly twenty years on, Mario’s journey through the stars is still a cosmic marvel.

Accessibility

Not much to write home about in terms of accessibility. Both games include an Assist Mode, which increases your life and bounces you back from falls.

Settings allow you to change the way you interact with the camera via thumbsticks and motion controls.

It would’ve been nice to see more additions to accessibility, but it appears as if Nintendo has kept even the settings faithful to the originals.

How I reviewed Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

I played around 25 hours total, split between both games, and used my OLED TV for a full 4k experience. I played Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition in a mixture of handheld mode on the Nintendo Switch 2 itself and on one of the best OLED TVs, the Samsung Q90D, using the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller.

I had previously played both games on the Wii and had experienced Super Mario Galaxy on Nintendo Switch as part of Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

Is It Time to Upgrade to the iPhone 17? How Older iPhones Compare

The arrival of the iPhone 17 might have you wondering if it’s time to swap your older Apple device for the latest model. Depending on your current iPhone, getting the iPhone 17 could be a notable step up.

The iPhone 17 starts at $829, or $799 if you activate through a carrier. But unlike previous generations, the lowest storage option is 256GB, which is a nice upgrade from the previous 128GB starting point.

Several noteworthy updates to the iPhone 17 make it feel like a tempting choice, even over the pricier iPhone 17 Pro models. At long last, Apple has extended a 1-120Hz display across its entire lineup, so you can have smoother scrolling and an always-on display without spending upwards of $1,100 on a Pro model. An anti-reflective coating and higher 3,000-nit peak brightness make the screen slightly easier to see outdoors. And camera upgrades help to level up photos and selfies. 

Here’s how the iPhone 17 compares to older iPhones, ranging from last year’s iPhone 16 to 2020’s iPhone 12.

The iPhone 16

iPhone 17 vs. iPhone 16

Appearance-wise, the iPhone 17 has a lot in common with the iPhone 16. But beneath the surface, there are some key differences. 

The display goes from a meager 60Hz on the iPhone 16 to 120Hz on the iPhone 17 (at long last). That means the iPhone 17 finally supports an always-on display, so you can glance at the time and your notifications without waking the screen and enjoy smoother scrolling. A new anti-reflective coating helps reduce glare, especially in the bright outdoor conditions. 

The iPhone 17 has a larger 6.3-inch display, versus the iPhone 16’s 6.1-inch screen, thanks to slimmer bezels. That can make viewing content slightly more immersive, though it won’t be a hugely noticeable difference. And a new Ceramic Shield 2 cover on the iPhone 17 offers three times better scratch resistance, according to Apple, so you can worry a little less about etching into your phone’s screen (but maybe still get a screen protector to be safe).

The iPhone 16 and 17 have a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, but the iPhone 17 bumps the ultrawide camera from 12 megapixels to 48 megapixels. The front-facing camera also gets upgraded from 12 megapixels (on the iPhone 16) to 18 megapixels on the iPhone 17. Both phones have a Camera Control button for quickly launching the camera and snapping photos.

A new Center Stage feature can automatically adjust selfie photos from portrait orientation to landscape to ensure everyone is in the shot, so you don’t have to manually rotate your phone to its side anymore. Dual Capture lets you simultaneously record on your front and back cameras. These upgrades are specifically catered to the latest iPhone lineup, so that they won’t be coming to older models like the iPhone 16, even with an iOS 26 update.

Battery life is a little longer on the iPhone 17. Apple says the iPhone 17 supports up to 8 hours more of video playback than the iPhone 16. This change aligns with improvements CNET noticed in our battery tests. In a 3-hour streaming test, for example, the iPhone 17’s battery dropped from 100% to 89%, while the iPhone 16 hit 86%. It’s an incremental update, but even a little more battery life is a welcome change. The iPhone 17 also supports up to 40-watt charging, which is a boost over the 25 watts you get with the iPhone 16, helping you top off your battery a little faster.

The bottom line: While the updates to the iPhone 17 help it stand out as an all-around solid device, the changes over last year’s iPhone 16 are incremental enough that there’s not much reason to upgrade — unless you’re really excited about that smoother display and faster charging. But for most people, subtle differences mean you should probably just hold onto your iPhone 16. 

The iPhone 15

iPhone 17 vs. iPhone 15

The iPhone 15 has a lot in common with the iPhone 16, including a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 6.1-inch display. The 6.3-inch display on the iPhone 17 has slimmer bezels to expand that real estate a bit, and the 48-megapixel ultrawide camera can lead to slightly sharper shots.

The baseline iPhone 15 doesn’t have an Action button that you can customize to launch various apps and functions, and instead has the more traditional ring/silent switch. The iPhone 17 has an Action button and a Camera Control button.

Both phones have a Dynamic Island cutout at the top of the display for showing alerts and Live Activities, such as the time your DoorDash order is arriving, flight updates and what song is currently playing.

With each generation, Apple touts longer battery life, so you can expect to get a couple more hours of video playback with the iPhone 17 than you would with the 15.

Perhaps the most significant difference between the iPhone 15 and 17 is that the iPhone 15 doesn’t have Apple Intelligence; those AI features only arrived on that year’s Pro models. If you upgrade to the iPhone 17, you’ll have access to writing and image editing tools, as well as newer features like Live Translation for calls and messages. 

The bottom line: Like the iPhone 16, there aren’t many drastic differences between the iPhone 15 and 17, though upgrading will notably grant you access to Apple Intelligence. But the other hardware and software-related updates are relatively minimal, so you’re probably good keeping your iPhone 15 for at least another year.

The iPhone 14

iPhone 17 vs. iPhone 14

The iPhone 14 was the last Apple phone with a Lightning port and that’s one of most significant differences between it and the iPhone 17, which has a USB-C port. Upgrading to the iPhone 17 means you won’t have to rely on an outdated and limited-use charging cable anymore, and can instead use one that works with most of your other devices. 

The baseline iPhone 14 also doesn’t have a Dynamic Island cutout in the display, as that feature launched with just the Pro models that year. Upgrading to the iPhone 17 will let you quickly tap into activities like your rideshare trip or flight information.

The iPhone 14 has a 12-megapixel wide and ultrawide-angle camera on the back, while the iPhone 17 bumps that to 48 megapixels across the board. The iPhone 17 also increases the front-facing camera’s resolution from 12 megapixels to 18 megapixels, while adding a new Center Stage selfie feature to automatically adjust between portrait and landscape images without you having to rotate your phone. 

But the two phones also some key similarities, like having eSIM and satellite connectivity on board.

The bottom line: The iPhone 14 has the most noticeable differences with the iPhone 17. Upgrading could offer some fresh features like an Action button and, at last, a USB-C port, as well as Dynamic Island and an upgraded camera. But if you want to save some money and keep your current phone, you won’t be missing out on anything too drastic.

The iPhone 13

iPhone 17 vs. iPhone 13

The iPhone 13 has a similar A15 Bionic chip as the iPhone 14, and shares the same dual 12-megapixel camera system. But unlike the iPhone 14, the iPhone 13 doesn’t have crash detection or satellite connectivity, or camera features like Action mode for more stable videos. 

At this point, your iPhone 13 may be showing its age. Upgrading to the iPhone 17 will give you access to newer features like Apple Intelligence, Dynamic Island, USB-C charging and the Camera Control and Action buttons. You might also notice faster speeds by switching to the iPhone 17, now that it’s been a few years since the iPhone 13 came out.

The bottom line: It may be time to upgrade to the iPhone 17 if you have an iPhone 13. It’s possible your phone is starting to show its age, and switching to Apple’s latest baseline will get you a longer-lasting battery, an upgraded camera, AI features and a handful of new hardware and software capabilities. 

The iPhone 12

Like the next couple of iPhones after it, the iPhone 12 has a dual 12-megapixel camera system, as well as a 6.1-inch display. Upgrading to the iPhone 17 will get you a slightly more immersive 6.3-inch display with thinner bezels, along with a 48-megapixel dual camera system. 

The iPhone 12 lacks features like crash detection, satellite connectivity, Dynamic Island and USB-C charging. It also doesn’t support the Apple Intelligence suite of AI features for writing, photo editing, language translation and more. 

It’s possible your iPhone 12 has become sluggish and your battery isn’t holding up like it used to. Taking age out of the equation, at launch, the iPhone 12 boasted up to 17 hours of video playback, while Apple says the iPhone 17 supports up to 30 hours. So there’s likely to be a noticeable difference between how long each phone can hold up.

The bottom line: Swapping your iPhone 12 for the iPhone 17 could be a smart move. There have been noticeable changes over the last several years, from the addition of the Action and Camera Control buttons to the introduction of Apple Intelligence. The swap to USB-C and expanded battery capacity can also make the newest iPhone more tempting; you won’t have to cling to your now-outdated Lightning cable. And you’ll likely notice faster speeds and higher performance across the board when switching from a 5-year-old device to the latest generation.

As Chrono Trigger celebrates 30th anniversary, spiritual successor Threads of Time gets fresh gameplay trailer

The Chrono Trigger-inspired retro RPG Threads of Time has received a new gameplay trailer, showing off more of its time-travelling narrative.

From Canadian developer Riyo Games, Threads of Time was first revealed at last year’s Tokyo Game Show. Now, a year later, this new trailer was shown at the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct and it looks to be progressing nicely.

As with Square Enix’s iconic classic, Threads of Time will take place across a number of time periods, from prehistory to a cyberpunk future, and is presented similarly to the Octopath Traveller HD-2D aesthetic.

One minute the adventurers are strolling through a bustling medieval town and battling the sort of fluffy or botanical creatures you’d typically expect in an RPG; the next they’re exploring sci-fi facilities and a rain-soaked futuristic metropolis with flying cars overhead.

There are some beautiful animated scenes chopped in too, though I hope the character designs don’t lean too heavily on Chrono Trigger nostalgia – I’m looking at you, robot.

What’s really struck me, though, is the look of the battles. These are turn-based, but have a strong sense of depth with a perspective sitting between Octopath and Dragon Quest as characters fight across the foreground and background with some evocative environments.

There’s no release date yet, though presumably it’s set for release on PC.

It’s also well-timed, following the critically acclaimed Sea of Stars from fellow Canadian studio Sabotage as another Chrono Trigger-inspired retro RPG. That game’s DLC Throes of the Watchmaker was recently released, if you need an excuse to return.

What’s more, Square Enix is this year celebrating the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger and promised various projects would be released, sparking hope for some form of remake or remaster.

It’s still unclear what’s happening there, even as fans cry out for a re-release on current hardware. Until then, Threads of Time could well fill the gap.

Best Digimon Games To Play Before Or After Time Stranger

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is out next week. It’s the latest in the turn-based RPG series, but these digital monsters have shown up in a lot more games than just RPGs. Across its nearly 30 years, Digimon has been pretty experimental in the video game space. Not every swing has landed, but it has kept things interesting. A few of these games never made their way out of Japan, but the best ones came stateside, though they’re harder to come by because companies do not care about preservation. If you’ve never played a Digimon game before, here are some of the best ones to go back to.

Digimon World / Digimon World: Next Order

Despite my dislike of the virtual pet mechanics of Digimon World, I know if I don’t include the original PlayStation game on this list, someone will get mad at me. As frustrating as it can be, Digimon World’s vibes are still unmatched by most of the franchise. There’s a true sense of loneliness as your character is isekai’d into the Digital World, aimlessly wandering through this unknowable realm and discovering new friends and enemies as you explore. It also still has that PS1-era grit that has kind of washed away from more modern Digimon games, which is especially effective when you’re young and these worlds still feel vast and scary. If you can train your Digimon into something powerful enough to fight through its various challenges, Digimon World has an expansive, fascinating world to watch grow over the course of the game. It’s the training part that can become tedious. But those with the patience to fight through it found a lot to love. Next Order is a modern spin on this same loop, and if you can handle it with one monster, that game lets you manage two at a time. Godspeed, friend.

Digimon Racing

Wait, no. Come back. I swear, the Game Boy Advance kart racer rules, actually. If you ever played Mario Kart or Sonic Racing, you know the gist of what Digimon Racing has to offer. The Digimon spin is that the monster you put behind the wheel will gradually digivolve over the course of a race as you drift over a digitized track, gaining speed and power as you leave your opponents in the dust. Digimon Racing was also one of the only games that supported the GBA’s wireless adapter, as Nintendo was trying to cut the link cable in the lead-up to the Nintendo DS. I have some pretty fond memories of racing against my brother across our living room. It felt like magic at the time. 

Digimon Rumble Arena 1+2

Everyone has tried a Super Smash Bros. knock-off at some point, right? Digimon Rumble Arena and its sequel may not have become competitive darlings that had people dragging CRT TVs to conventions decades later, but they’re silly, fun party games starring your favorite Digital Monsters. The first game was on the original PlayStation and only supported two players, which could make some fights a bit of a drag as they devolved into games of tag with the two fighters chasing each other around the large arenas. Rumble Arena 2 came out two years later and leaned harder into the Super Smash Bros. comparison, supporting four players and making fights much more active, frantic, and fun. 

Digimon World 2

The original Digimon World game implemented the series’ digital pet mechanics in a way that some people get really into. Personally I can’t stand it, and was annoyed when it came back in Digimon World: Next Order. Do you know how annoying it is to try to train your partner Digimon for an hour, only for them to end up turning into one of the poop monsters? However, the World series has changed a fair bit over the years, too. Digimon World 2 left the first game’s real-time digital pet era behind, and is instead a dungeon crawler with turn-based battles. The battle system isn’t too deep, but its elaborate, experimental Digivolution mechanics set the tone for future iterations.

Digimon Survive

Digimon Survive isn’t a great tactical RPG, but it is a damn good visual novel. The combat is mind-numbingly simple and lacks the depth of much older classics like Final Fantasy Tactics. That said, its choice-driven horror story visual novel side is actually a pretty gripping tale that really brings a fresh take to the universe. Survive’s tedious fights are worth slogging through to get to the rich, often harrowing story it has to tell. 

Digimon World 3

If Digimon World 2 brought the subseries into turn-based battles, World 3 solidified it with a solid, more streamlined system in one of the coolest versions of the Digital World. The RPG’s roster of Digimon is much more limited, but its challenge comes from working within its set party compositions and finding a party that works for you in all its limitations. Outside of battles, its gorgeous PS1-era sprite work still holds up. Meanwhile, its dark story of a group of people trapped within a virtual reality MMO is a bit rote by today’s standards, but was pretty unnerving back in the day. Plus, it was the first time Guilmon, the best Digimon, got to have a starring role in one of the RPGs. More than most Digimon games, I constantly wish I could go back to World 3, but it’s been trapped on the original PlayStation for over 20 years.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth

I just finished a replay of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth earlier this year, and that shit holds up. The turn-based detective RPG is one of the series’ best stories, and it perfectly marries the franchise’s mysteries, mythology, and themes of the power of friendship. It is the closest to a Persona game the series has ever gotten, and though its turn-based battles are pretty simple, the game, with its elaborate evolution mechanics that enable you, through careful planning and metagaming, to turn just about any Digimon into almost any of the other 200+ on the roster, is dripping with depth. The Hacker’s Memory follow-up, which you can find packaged with the original game on PC and Switch, adds another 50 hours of parallel story that’s also worth your time. If you haven’t played the game before and are curious about Time Stranger, you won’t find a better onboarding on modern platforms than Cyber Sleuth.

Stablecoins are rapidly becoming one of the dominant use cases linking crypto and tradfi.

Recent forecasts, institutional moves, and regulatory efforts suggest the sector is reaching an inflection point. And now, at least one analysis believes the stablecoin market cap alone could reach $4 trillion by 2030.

That’s twice the current size of the entire crypto economy in stablecoins alone.

Forecasting a Stablecoin Boom

That projection originates from Citi, whose analysts now estimate a base case of $1.9 trillion in stablecoin issuance by 2030, up from earlier forecasts. In a bullish scenario, the bank predicts issuance reaching $4 trillion.

If stablecoins were to be integrated everywhere, the analysts suggest they could support as much as $100T of annual transaction volume, a scale dwarfing today’s markets.

Citi tempers its optimism with caution. Many firms remain hesitant to adopt stablecoins in core operations, treating them as experimental tools rather than foundational infrastructure. In many domestic markets, conventional payment systems already operate at low cost and in near real time. Still, as legislation finally catches up, stablecoin utility has steadily grown.

The biggest real opportunity is in cross-border settlement, where inefficiencies still exist. Even so, Citi highlights that tokenized bank deposits may surpass stablecoins in usage by 2030.

Bank tokens are tokenized deposits, deposit tokens, and other bank-issued tokenized assets. They provide the trust, familiarity, and regulatory safeguards of bank money, and many corporations prefer them over stablecoins.

The final takeaway from the report highlights just how big the market could be. Still, just how much growth remains – even in a bullish case of $100T in payments annually, stablecoins would be a small percentage of the $5T-$10T leading banks send and receive daily.

The current stablecoin market grew from around $200B in early 2025 to nearly $280B, despite experiencing significant market swings. Governments and regulators are actively discussing how to regulate the issuance, backing, and redemption of these asset instruments.

Beyond market risk, stablecoins carry macro and geopolitical stakes.

If dollar-pegged stablecoins maintain dominance, capital flows and payments globally may increasingly favor U.S. influence.

The more stablecoins proliferate, the more issuers will likely hold U.S. Treasuries as reserve backing.

This creates a strategic vulnerability for Europe: a foreign digital currency could undermine domestic monetary control.

Europe’s Move: Consortium for a Euro-Backed Stablecoin

In response, nine European banks — including UniCredit, ING, CaixaBank, SEB, and Raiffeisen — have teamed up to launch a euro-denominated stablecoin, aiming for a debut in late 2026.

Incorporated in the Netherlands, the initiative will operate under a regulated license framework, with room for additional participants.

The goal is more than technological innovation; it is part of a broader strategy for European payment sovereignty in the midst of concerns over a growing US stablecoin lead.

The stablecoin project aligns with the enforcement of the EU’s MiCA regulation and complements efforts by the European Central Bank to push forward a digital euro.

There’s a bit of urgency to the project – the dominance of U.S. dollar tokens could erode monetary control and expose Europe to external leverage. U.S. stablecoin incumbents like Tether ($USDT) and Circle ($USDC) already command massive network effects and liquidity.

For the European project to succeed, it must overcome regulatory barriers, build trust, and provide liquidity – and fast.

Borderlands 4 patch adds FOV sliders, somehow both improves and worsens stability at the same time

A new Borderlands 4 patch has been released packing a number of important improvements, including a much-requested FOV slider on the console version, various bug fixes and stability improvements. However, it has also bizarrely reduced game stability for some PC players too.

To these newfound performance problems, the official Borderlands X account has suggested stuttering issues should resolve over time as shaders compile in the background. However, if problems persist after 15-minutes of play, it then recommends clearing your shader cache.

There’s a lot of fixes here, some of which are wild. According to the patch notes, continued improvements to stability will be made over time, plus fixes have been made to infinite loading screens, certain achievements unlocking before they should, unowned DLC items appearing in chests or menus, and more.

It’s not all fixes though. This update comes with weekly activity changes too. The Weekly Big Encore Boss has switched, as has the Weekly Wildcard missions and Maurice’s Black Market Vending Machine location. So if you’re still locked into Borderlands 4 there should be some new surprises for you starting today.

The update comes following a saga of performance related drama surrounding Borderlands 4. The game launched with significant performance problems and had quite lofty minimum recommended PC specs. Gearbox CEO stood by the game and stated it was “pretty damn optimal”, later advising unhappy players to refund Borderlands 4if they were unhappy with the game.

Earlier this week the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 was indefinitely delayed too, so it’s been a rough start for the sci-fi shooter. Still, the game is proving popular among its playerbase and has a lot to offer those able to push past technical hurdles. The Eurogamer review notes: “There was rarely a moment playing Borderlands 4 where I didn’t enjoy some part of it. But there was rarely a moment where elements of it didn’t frustrate me, either.”

Elon Musk’s xAI Sues OpenAI Again, This Time Over Alleged Trade Secret Theft

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday against OpenAI, accusing its rival of orchestrating a “coordinated, unfair, and unlawful campaign” to steal proprietary technology through targeted employee poaching.

The complaint, filed in California, alleges OpenAI “by hook or by crook” induced former xAI employees to misappropriate the company’s entire source code, training methods, and data center deployment strategies.

Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI alongside Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Illya Sutskever, and others in 2015, stepped down from the board in 2018, citing conflicts of interest with his company, Tesla, and its self-driving cars. Since then, the tech billionaire has assumed a combative stance against OpenAI, including filing a separate lawsuit last month.



OpenAI recruiter Tifa Chen simultaneously targeted multiple xAI employees, offering multi-million dollar packages to engineers who then stole source code and uploaded it to personal devices within hours of their communications, the lawsuit alleges.

Xuechen Li, an early xAI engineer, allegedly “uploaded the entire xAI source code base to a personal cloud account” in July 2025, and later “admitted in a handwritten confession” that he misappropriated xAI’s code and presentation materials on training techniques.

The lawsuit details timestamps showing Li’s code theft occurred within hours of encrypted Signal messages with Chen, who allegedly responded “no way!” after Li copied the files, before OpenAI extended its multi-million dollar offer.

Jimmy Fraiture, another early xAI engineer, allegedly “used the AirDrop feature to transfer” confidential source code “at least five times” after signing with OpenAI, stealing “the majority of xAI’s code” he oversaw, plus experimental folders from four co-founders.

An unnamed senior finance executive who left for OpenAI allegedly called these operations xAI’s “secret sauce,” saying, “The data center team. Their speed and precision blew me away. I would NEVER want to compete against them.”

The executive then took a lesser role at OpenAI, focused on data center spending strategy even though he had no prior AI experience, and when confronted about confidentiality obligations, allegedly “responded with crude sexual expletives” and refused to sign termination documents.

Navodaya Singh Rajpurohit, legal partner at Coinque Consulting, told Decrypt  the case “leans heavily on employee poaching,” noting that whether it crosses from aggressive recruiting to unlawful misappropriation “will depend on evidence not included in the filing,” and that “hiring alone is rarely enough to prove trade-secret misuse.”

Ishita Sharma, managing partner at Fathom Legal, told Decrypt that xAI must define its “secret sauce” broadly, grouping GPU racking, vendor contracts, pricing curves, and orchestration playbooks, which, she noted, can be described “by the results they deliver — like faster deployment or cheaper scaling,  without putting the exact technical diagrams or formulas on the record.”

Sharma said “the recruiter angle is trickier,” since liability depends on whether recruiters acted as agents of OpenAI with the company’s knowledge. 

For OpenAI’s defense, she explained, the strongest approach would be to show independent creation through “time-stamped records: internal Git commits, R&D notes, supplier invoices, and emails,” with earlier documentation providing the most credibility.

xAI seeks damages, restitution, and injunctions requiring OpenAI to purge xAI material from its systems and even destroy models built with it.

The lawsuit adds to Musk’s ongoing legal battle with OpenAI, as last month, his companies filed an antitrust suit against Apple and OpenAI, claiming their exclusive iPhone integration creates unfair market dominance.

Borderlands 4’s latest patch triggers a flurry of performance complaints, but Gearbox says new stuttering problems ‘should resolve over time as the shaders continue to compile’

A new Borderlands 4 patch has gone live with an array of fixes, gameplay tweaks, and the big one, promises of improved performance and stability—sorely needed for a game that, despite its popularity, holds a “mixed” rating on Steam, largely because of sub-par performance. (For the record, our reviewer liked it quite a bit.) The update has sparked a new round of performance complaints, though, as quite a few players are reporting that instead of being improved, their in-game performance is worse than ever.

One of the less-great things about PC gaming is that the nigh-infinite number of potential hardware configurations means that somebody, somewhere, is always going to have problems with a new game launch or update. In this case, though, the problems seem fairly widespread, with reports of diminished frame rates and increased stuttering coming in on Steam, Reddit, and X alike.

Some users do say they’ve seen an improvement in frame rates, or at least that things are more or less the same. But, at least at this point, they seem easily outnumbered by players who say they’ve encountered the opposite effect. A few players have said clearing the shader cache might help clear up the problems, but it’s not clear whether that’s related to this new patch or just a catch-up to a known issue we talked about last week.

Gearbox acknowledged the complaints a couple hours after the patch went live but indicated that there might not actually be any problems. “Stuttering issues should resolve over time as the shaders continue to compile in the background while playing,” the studio wrote on X. Compiling shaders is, you’ll recall, the bane of gamers everywhere. “If you’re still experiencing issues after 15 minutes of continuous play, you can also clear your shader cache via your video card manufacturer’s approved method.”

  • Maurice’s Black Market Vending Machine has moved to another location and changed its offerings. Remember, while the location is the same, your vending machine items are different from other players, so ask around to see if someone has the item you’re looking for!

Stability & Performance

  • Improvements to stability and performance.
    • Addressed various instances of hitching, low FPS, and crashes. 
    • We are continuing to investigate and will make further improvements to stability and performance.
  • Updated character animations for performance improvements.
  • Graphics Preset could be set to High or Very High when using Run Auto-Detect in Visual Menu.
  • Addressed rare issues of infinite loading screens during crossplay.
  • Improved loading of characters in menus to reduce visible delays when entering character select.

Rewards & Progression

  • Addressed a reported issue where players could lose or be rewarded unintended extra Skill Points in multiplayer.
  • Addressed an issue that could prevent Contract target enemies from consistently spawning.
  • Updated Repkit lifesteal challenge to track lifesteal from any source.
  • Prevented region discovery achievements from unlocking before discovering all areas.
  • Prevented instances of unowned DLC content appearing in chests or in menus.
  • Improved clarity of DLC-related warnings and reward availability. 
  • Addressed a reported issue where the Reward Center could stop working after claiming the Gilded Glory Pack rewards. 
  • Rewards Center popup now correctly excludes already-claimed cosmetics.
  • Reduced sell prices on Gilded Glory Pack gear in Vending Machines.
  • Updated the Break Free Pack reward bundle to redeem properly in all instances.
  • Challenge timing has been updated so players can properly progress from Ultimate Vault Hunter (UVH) 4 to UVH 5 after completing the required Wildcard Mission.
    • When ranking up in multiplayer, players that are not the host will not see the change to their UVH level, but will be able to switch to the higher level. This will be addressed in an upcoming update.  
  • Updated Class Mods to prevent them from dropping with incorrect skill points.
  • Removed the ECHO log “Maurice’s Log” as a requirement for the challenge ”Kairos Speaks“.
    • Note: For those not seeing the reward after this change, we will be addressing that in a future patch.

Vault Hunter Changes

Harlowe the Gravitar

  • Gravitar Ground State Capstone has been corrected to remove inaccurate verbiage about enemies taking reduced damage when they do not.
  • Gravitar Flux Generator no longer heals enemies with Potential Transference Capstone. 
  • Updated Gravitar Accretion passive to consistently grant Lifesteal to allies. 
  • Addressed various reported issues with Gravitar Unstable Energy Pocket created from CHROMA Accelerator Action Skill.
    •  Includes instances where it would not disappear properly, convert to Cryo Damage, or split as intended with certain skill tree combinations. Skills that saw updates: Special Purpose Magnets Augment, The Shattering Light Capstone, QED passive, Break the Ice passive, Containment Breach Augment, and Eureka! Passive.

Amon the Forgeknight

  • Forgeknight Primal Surge passive now properly restores Shield and Ammo.
  • Forgeknight Firewall Action Skill has been adjusted so Vengeance cannot be stored by Firewall before Scourge is active, as intended.
  • Forgeknight Onslaughter Rocket Punch now connects more reliably with shielded enemies.
  • Addressed a reported issue with Forgeknight Forgeaxe not consistently seeking nearby enemies.

Vex the Siren

  • Addressed a reported issue with Siren Grave Harvest Augment being triggered while Incarnate is not active. 
  • Addressed a reported issue where Siren Blight Attunement passive could occasionally fail to damage the Timekeeper.
  • Damage caused by Siren Spirit Bomb passive now counts properly as Companion Damage and changes its color to match attuned element.

Rafa the Exo-Soldier

  • Addressed a reported issue preventing Exo-Soldier Blowout passive from stacking properly when repeating Action Skills. 

Gameplay

  • Addressed a reported issue in the “Overwriting a Wrong” Side Mission where nodes would not spawn consistently.
  • Addressed a reported issue in the “Talk to Zadra” Mission where the objective could fail if players exited and relaunched mid-dialogue.
  • Updated beam hit detection, as it was causing beams to not be blocked properly. Eg: Forgeknight Forgeshield.
  • Repkits now consistently consume the correct amount of charges after activating Forgeknight Scourge action skill.
  • Prevented Forgeknight from sliding at the end of Molten Slam.
  • Addressed various reported instances of enemies getting stuck.
    • Impacted Missions: during “Kill Order Forces” in the Fadefields, “His Vile Sanctum” Mission, and “A Lot to Process” Mission.
  • Addressed reported desync issues observed with Lightweight Armature enemy movement in multiplayer.
  • Updated Zadra’s Lab Fast Travel unlock to after discovery.

Gear

  • Vladof Atling Gun Heavy Weapon Ordnance now properly targets Primordial Guardian Inceptus.
  • Queen’s Rest Pistols with Daedalus Ammoswitcher licensed underbarrel now shoot the correct projectiles.
  • Gear with the Short Circuit Augment now traces properly toward enemies instead of random directions.
  • Addressed reported edge cases where interrupting reload could cause ammo desyncs that would prevent ammo from firing.
  • Hellwalker: now always spawns with Fire element.
  • Tediore weapons: +10% Damage and +10% magazine size.
  • Order Pistol Lucky Clover (Rocket Reload): increased fire rate.
  • Order Sniper Rifle Fisheye: increased Damage.

UI & UX

  • Updated gear thumbnails in cases where they did not display properly, and ensured stand-in thumbnails load properly.
  • Updated various UI visuals for alignment, consistency, and clarity.
  • Adjusted inventory dropdown menus to prevent unintended selected changes. 
  • Added D-pad navigation support to the Reward Center and improved handling of the Inventory Overflow message.
  • Prevented Matchmaking Menu hint bar from displaying incorrect prompts when joining another player’s game.
  • Addressed compass occasionally displaying incorrect location name after teleporting.
  • Updated localization and various text descriptions across the game.
  • Added various improvements to compass, custom waypoint placement, and ECHO location.

Visuals

  • Addressed carryable objects disappearing or appearing in the wrong location after being picked up; includes cases in Ready to Blow, Lost Capsules, and Hangover Helper Missions.
  • Improved triggering of Armor Segment breaks VFX when Shield Capacity effects expire. 
  • Updated NPC and enemy pathing.
  • Addressed VFX concerns with various weapons, vehicles, and elemental states.
  • Various animation updates.
  • Various visual updates and improvements.
  • Adjusted rift portal effect to corrected visuals.
  • Updated ECHO-4 to have correct positioning when viewing various menus, and to prevent clipping. 
  • Ambient critters have a more natural spawn behavior.

Audio

  • DJs in Carcadia Burn and Fadefields now play their VO when starting or completing Contracts. 
  • Adjusted radio music mix for improved audibility. 
  • Added missing audio for multiple weapon types, customization, and menu navigation.
  • Reduced instances of voiceover cutting out during Missions.
  • Updated startup movies to have correct audio.

Misc

  • Addressed reported instances of incorrect or deleted characters appearing in Menu or Lobbies.
  • Enabled Tab key in SHiFT UI.
  • Added haptic feedback for controllers to Exo-Soldier Unmissable Missiles Augment.
  • Updated Credits listing.

NOTE: We’ve received reports that some players are experiencing reduced stability after downloading this update.

SOLUTION: Stuttering issues should resolve over time as the shaders continue to compile in the background while playing. If you’re still experiencing issues after 15 minutes of continuous play, you can also clear your shader cache via your video card manufacturer’s approved method.
