Steeplechaser Tim Van de Velde stops to help ailing foe finish

by admin September 13, 2025

Sep 13, 2025, 02:36 PM ET

TOKYO — Steeplechaser Tim Van de Velde looked behind him and saw a fellow competitor gingerly crawling over the final barrier on a 3,000-meter journey that went terribly wrong for both.

The Belgian’s hopes for a top finish already long crushed, he turned around, put an arm around a stumbling Carlos San Martin and helped him limp in to the finish.

That show of sportsmanship Saturday between the 10th- and 11th-place finishers in an otherwise routine qualifying race might have been the highlight of a busy opening night at track and field world championships, even on a day when five gold medals were handed out.

“I saw him stumbling and thought, ‘Why not?'” Van de Velde said. “We both had bad luck, I guess. Maybe we can share some bad luck together.”

Van de Velde was racing in front as the runners approached the water pit to start the third of a 7½-lap race that asks the runners to vault five 3-foot-high barriers placed around the track, one of which fronts the 2-foot-deep water obstacle.

He clipped the barrier and fell in, and by the time he got up, his hopes were crushed. He raced the rest of the way just to say he finished.

Van de Velde, 25, is no stranger to these sort of slipups. A gold medalist at the 2016 European Youth Championships, he broke his collarbone after a fall at the European Championships last year. At worlds in Eugene, Oregon, in 2022, he fell into the water and injured his ankle.

“I know what it’s like to feel helpless on the track,” he said.

As does San Martin. The Colombian was helped off the track in a wheelchair and didn’t come through the interview area.

Van de Velde said it will take time to get over this latest disappointment. The good news is there’s a great chance he will be remembered for something other than where he finished.

“We’re both competitors. We both work very hard,” Van de Velde said. “Of course, the main goal was the final and we both had bad luck, so that’s why I did it.”

“Bitcoin Is Your Alternative”, Tim Draper Reaffirms $250,000 Price Target

In a world where inflation has stifled the economy, Bitcoin is persistently being pushed as a reliable alternative asset to these waning macroeconomic conditions. Big firms and figures in the financial sector are starting to adopt the crypto leader, reinforcing its status as a mainstream asset and store of value.

Tim Draper’s Drops Bombshell On Bitcoin

American venture capital investor and renowned crypto advocate Tim Draper has once again made waves in the financial world, as he doubles down on his bold outlook for Bitcoin. During a recent interview on CBNC, the investor made a startling claim about BTC, calling it “your alternative” to the traditional financial system and failing economy.

This bold statement comes even as BTC faces heightened bearish pressure and robust pullback from its all-time high of $124,000 achieved in early August. Draper’s bullish comment on BTC underscores its resilience, positioning it as a defense against collapsing fiat currencies, inflation, and centralized control.

In the interview, Draper reaffirmed his forecast of Bitcoin hitting the $250,000 mark despite being halfway to the price target since his initial prediction. His repeated prediction of a $250,000 target reflects his unwavering conviction in BTC, driven by the fact that the crypto king is transforming it from a speculative asset into a global financial asset.

While reiterating his bullish forecast, the investor stated that BTC is a hedge against bad governance, government spending, and inflation. Furthermore, he claimed that Bitcoin is acting as an alternative for individuals and businesses that allows them to tackle the major shift occurring in government policies over time.

Draper also outlined BTC’s notable growing recognition and acceptance across the world, even in countries that lacked the environment for new technologies to thrive. According to the investor, BTC initially gained robust recognition and confidence from these countries before going mainstream over the years.

He has declared Bitcoin as the solution to government spending, which represents the percentage of GDP. Over the last 100 years, government spending has constantly seen a significant increase, but Draper believes that BTC is the key hedge against this rapid spending. In the meantime, Draper has placed Bitcoin as a reliable store of value in a failing economy above Gold, likening the asset to Shells.

Institutional BTC Buying Is Still Alive

Despite a sharp pullback from new highs, institutional investors are exhibiting newfound confidence in Bitcoin, as they go on a buying spree. Metaplanet, a popular Japanese-based firm, has made another BTC purchase, underscoring the company’s strong conviction in the asset’s long-term prospects.

According to the president of Metaplanet, Simon Gerovich, the company purchased 103 BTC at $113,491 per coin, valued at $11.7 million. Following this new purchase, the firm’s holdings now boast about 18,991 BTC, worth a staggering $1.95 billion, reaching a Year-To-Date (YTD) yield of 479.5%.

Billionaire Tim Draper on $250K Bitcoin Prediction: ‘I Haven’t Been Right Yet’

by admin August 25, 2025

  • Uber-bullish price target
  • Bitcoin and Microsoft

Prominent Silicon Valley investor Tim Draper has addressed his failed $250,000 Bitcoin price predictions during his Monday interview on CNBC.

“So, I’ve been predicting $250,000 for Bitcoin for a long time. It turns out I haven’t been right yet,” Draper said, bursting out in laughter.

Nevertheless, Draper claims that the fact that Bitcoin is already halfway there is “very exciting.”

He insists that Bitcoin is a “hedge” against bad governance, arguing that now is actually “a really good time” for the bellwether token.

Uber-bullish price target

Draper, who made his massive fortune with early bets on such names as Skype and Hotmail, was also among the first prominent investors to embrace Bitcoin. In 2014, he bought tens of thousands of Bitcoins that were auctioned off by the US Marshals Service after being confiscated from darkweb marketplace Silk Road.

In 2014, Draper predicted that Bitcoin would hit $10,000 within three years with extreme accuracy.

However, his next bullish target was a huge miss. Draper first stated that Bitcoin would be able to reach $250,000 within four years back in April 2018. He would then repeatedly reiterate that prediction throughout the years.

By the end of 2022, Bitcoin was trading at just $16,000 amid the FTX-induced market crash. Draper was forced to reset the clock on his ambitious price target several times.

Most recently, he predicted that Bitcoin would finally be able to reach $250,000 this year, which seems to be rather unlikely considering that the crypto king is currently changing hands at $111,000.

Bitcoin and Microsoft

As reported by U.Today, Bitcoin recently started losing ground to altcoins, including Ethereum (ETH).

Draper claims that competition is good for Bitcoin, adding that its market dominance is actually higher compared to previous cycles.

He has reiterated that Bitcoin is comparable to tech behemoth Microsoft in the sense that various novel applications are being ported to the leading network.

Draper has stated that there is a “gravitational” pull toward the largest cryptocurrency.

Senator Tim Scott courts Democrats for crypto bill as Warren rallies opposition

by admin August 19, 2025

By putting a number on his expected Democratic support, Senator Scott appears to be applying pressure and cracking a public whip count that might force hesitant senators to declare their position, turning a policy debate into a political test of loyalty and vision.

Summary

  • Senator Tim Scott predicts 12 to 18 Democrats may back the CLARITY Act in September.
  • The bill seeks to establish U.S. crypto market structure and regulatory clarity.
  • Scott identifies Senator Elizabeth Warren as a key obstacle to bipartisan support.

Speaking at the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium on August 19, Republican Senator Tim Scott publicly quantified his expected Democratic support for the upcoming CLARITY Act, predicting between 12 to 18 cross-aisle votes.

The Senate Banking Committee Chairman detailed his outreach to Democrats, framing the vote as a necessary step to provide regulatory certainty in the crypto industry and to deliver on President Trump’s stated goal of making the U.S. a global hub for digital finance.

Notably, Scott directly addressed the primary obstacle, naming Senator Elizabeth Warren as the central “force to overcome” for Democrats who might otherwise be inclined to support the market structure legislation.

Warren’s objections and the politics of crypto regulation

The Senate’s draft bill, which builds upon the House’s CLARITY Act, seeks to clarify how the SEC and CFTC divide oversight and provide legal certainty for exchanges and token issuers.

For its backers, the bill represents a long overdue modernization of financial rules to accommodate crypto, a sector that has grown far faster than regulators’ ability to police it. Scott and other Republicans argue that without a comprehensive structure, innovation will drift overseas, leaving American markets behind.

Warren, the Banking Committee’s top Democrat, has cast the bill in starkly different terms. She has lambasted the Republican draft as an “industry handout,” arguing it creates a bespoke regulatory regime with weaker consumer protections and lighter compliance burdens than those mandated for traditional banks and financial institutions.

The Senator’s central critique is that the bill, shaped significantly by industry input, prioritizes the wishes of the crypto lobby over the financial safety of everyday Americans, potentially exposing the economy to systemic risks. She ties this to a broader narrative of corruption, highlighting the potential for conflicts of interest.

The political elephant in the room

Senator Elizabeth Warren’s line of criticism dovetails with a potent political attack from Democrats focused on President Trump’s business interests. They point to the estimated $620 million in profits his family has reportedly garnered from various crypto ventures, including DeFi projects and memecoins, as evidence that the administration’s pro-innovation stance is less about national policy and more about personal enrichment.

This framing appears to taint the entire legislative effort, making support for the bill politically toxic for Democrats by associating it with the President’s private financial gains.

Despite this formidable hurdle, Scott’s optimism is fueled by more than just hope. It is rooted in the unprecedented alignment of a crypto-friendly executive branch. He is counting on the Trump administration to act as a powerful ally, both in lobbying hesitant legislators and in preparing the regulatory machinery for a swift implementation should the bill pass.

“We now have a team that’s leaning in and we feel like we have to get it done now. Executive action is not enough – period. If one president hated it, this one loves it, we need a Senate and a House that gets legislation passed,” Scott said in a statement.

What is at stake in September is nothing less than the immediate future of the American digital asset industry. Senator Scott’s self-imposed end-of-month deadline for committee action is a critical test of his political capital and his ability to forge a working coalition.
