TikTok now blocks search results for #SkinnyTok

by admin June 4, 2025

TikTok no longer shows search results for the hashtag #SkinnyTok. Critics who supported this block said some videos with that label were promoting disordered eating and other unhealthy or risky diet behaviors. We’ve reached out to TikTok for comment on this development.

France’s Minister of State for Digital Affairs Clara Chappaz was one of the politicians leading the pushback against this particular hashtag. She has been campaigning against #SkinnyTok with both French and EU regulators since April. “These videos promoting extreme thinness are revolting and absolutely unacceptable,” Chappaz said. “Digital tools are marvellous in terms of progress and freedom, but badly used they can shatter lives … the social networks cannot escape their responsibility.”

While blocking search results for potentially harmful hashtags is a positive step, it only places hurdles in the path of people who want to seek out similar videos. “Users are savvy,” Cornell University professor Brooke Erin Duffy told The New York Times. “They know how to work these platforms and how to evade their content moderation systems.”

A block on one hashtag is just the latest in TikTok’s piecemeal approach toward content that could encourage eating disorders. In 2020 it placed restrictions on ads that might “promote a negative or harmful body image,” such as fasting apps and weight loss supplements. TikTok began a partnership with the National Eating Disorder Association in 2021 to offer more resources for users with eating disorders. Later that year, it also introduced a new approach to the For You page in an effort to reduce the impact of watching too many repeated clips on a negative topic.

TikTok is working again | The Verge

by admin June 3, 2025

TikTok is back online after a brief outage last night. Many people started reporting problems with the platform just after 11PM ET, noting that while TikTok wasn’t completely offline, it was definitely dealing with some kind of technical issues that impacted users trying to access the service and view video comments.

Based on reports from Reddit, Twitter, Bluesky, and looking at our own devices, some videos were able to load in TikTok’s mobile apps, but accessing other features like comments or switching between accounts wasn’t working reliably, leading some users to wonder if their accounts were banned. Trying to pull up the TikTok website, or even its support pages, displayed a message saying “An error occurred while processing your request” along with a reference code.

TikTok didn’t make any public acknowledgement about the outage or what was causing it. At the time, status pages for some of its service providers, like Akamai and Oracle, didn’t indicate any wider problems. Downdetector listed 44,000 reports at our last check before regular service was restored at around 12AM ET, so while it’s unclear what was behind the technical issues, at least everything was restored swiftly.

Update, June 3rd: The TikTok outage has now been resolved.

MrBeast’s “hood” video becomes his most liked TikTok ever

by admin May 26, 2025

Jimmy ‘MrBeast’ Donaldson has finally done the “hood MrBeast” trend on TikTok, and it quickly became his most liked upload on the platform.

Among the thousands of viral trends on TikTok throughout April and May has been one trend where people dress up like the YouTuber with gold chains, a flatbill hat, and stacks of money in their hands.

Fans of Donaldson began asking him to participate in the trend, and on May 18, he finally did.

“I’m not doing the hood MrBeast trend, stop asking,” he said at the beginning of the video before it transitioned to him sitting in a private jet and in various other rooms. “You can call me MrLean now,” he added in the caption.

The video quickly went viral, amassing over 233M views, 23.3M likes, and 289k comments from fans across the world.

“MrLean” TikTok video becomes YouTuber’s most liked upload

“People on TikTok asked me to be more hood, so I did, and it became my most liked video ever, so here I am again. Idk what’s going on,” MrBeast said in a post on X.

To celebrate the success of his first video, Donaldson collaborated with Twitch star Kai Cenat to do a second set of hood photos.

Fans flocked to the comments of the second video to share their thoughts, with many excited to see the collaboration happen.

“Why is Mr. Lean actually tuff,” one user commented. Another said: “Mr.lean won this trend!!!”

Others, however, mentioned other creators that MrBeast should do the trend with, including IShowSpeed.

If he does collab with IShowSpeed for the hood MrBeast trend, it wouldn’t be the first time they’ve partnered together for content. Back in October, Jimmy invited him to a $1M haunted house where the YouTube streamer was scared “sh*tless.”

Eating Disorder Content Is Infiltrating TikTok. Some Creators Are Going Viral Debunking It

by admin May 21, 2025

After posting a “looksmaxxing” video, Imeh, who is Black, says he received racist comments, including ones telling him to “just be white.” Upon realizing that the community was “toxic and racist,” Imeh pivoted to anti-looksmaxxing content and then stumbled on “SkinnyTok” and pro-eating disorder communities on X.

“It’s way easier to find SkinnyTok, eating disorder TikTok, than recovery,” Imeh said. “I went for a different approach, telling them the side effects and what could happen if you’re not eating.”

Imeh’s videos mention more extreme potential health outcomes of eating disorders, like organ failure and hair loss. But he also sometimes mocks the messaging found in pro-eating disorder communities. In one TikTok, he’s eating with a text overlay that says “none of your friends are gonna be jealous that your Ed made you look like a skeleton baby pick up the fork.”

Imeh says he’s not trolling, but stating “literal facts” that he doesn’t sugarcoat. “One thing I noticed in Gen Z, especially my generation, is that they will only stop doing something if they’re embarrassed by it,” he says.

“I got a lot of people emailing me and DMing me like ‘Stephen you’ve helped me so much with my eating disorder.’” He has over 70,000 followers, many of whom began following him after he took on eating disorder communities.

Pillepich says she can see a modern, “chronically online” approach working to redirect attention and ideally get people who need it into recovery.

“Leading with nuance doesn’t get people’s attention. It does have to be more extreme, more funny, whatever it is,” Pillepich said. “If that gets someone to the first step of seeing a dietician, a therapist, working on the deeper issues, then that’s great, too.”

Breithaupt said that content that is too judgmental or makes people with eating disorders feel ashamed could make them less likely to get help. “The most effective anti-ED content tends to validate the pain beneath the disorder while still rejecting the behaviors,” she says.

“When content creators use humor or mockery to push back against pro-ED culture, there’s a real risk that viewers—especially those actively struggling—won’t just see the disorder being criticized, they’ll feel like they are being mocked.”

E said that TikTok content like Imeh’s helped her realize how “stupid” SkinnyTok was. She said she has started watching eating disorder recovery content, instead. But the algorithm still shows her “harsh motivation” for weight loss in addition to recovery videos.

In late 2024, TikTok banned a controversial weight loss influencer whose content glorified extreme thinness. E thinks TikTok should ban more of “SkinnyTok,” although pro-eating disorder communities have historically migrated to other platforms when that happens.

Eating disorder recovery practitioners say that posting anti-”SkinnyTok” videos on the same platform is likely helpful, but that it’s only a first step.

“What I work with most people on is limiting social media,” Breithaupt said. “Doing something else rather than engaging in social media is more helpful toward recovery, even if you’re watching recovery-oriented videos.”

The National Alliance for Eating Disorders Helpline provides support, resources and information about treatment options at 1-866-662-1235, Monday through Friday. You can also text “ALLIANCE” to 741741 if you are experiencing a crisis to be contacted by a trained volunteer.
