Palantir’s CEO Throws Money Behind Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

by admin June 18, 2025

Alex Karp, the billionaire CEO of creepy defense contractor Palantir, has taken a side in New York’s closely watched mayoral race. Karp, who once bragged that his company kills people, recently gave a large sum of money to a Super PAC that is supporting the campaign of former New York governor Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo is currently running against Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old assemblyman for the city’s 36th district in Queens. The race between the two candidates has become a referendum on New York’s future, with both candidates offering drastically different visions for housing and economic policy. Mamdani has described himself as a democratic socialist, while Cuomo is campaigning on a promise to bring sensible centrism back to the city after the fiasco that has been Eric Adams’s administration.

Politico notes that Karp recently donated $90,000 to Fix the City, which is backing Cuomo’s campaign. The contribution further cements a picture of Karp’s politics that leans rightward, though Karp has, in the past, referred to himself by a variety of political labels—even calling himself a “socialist” or a “neo-Marxist.” We can surely call BS on that now, since Karp is currently using his money to defeat an actual socialist.

Indeed, Karp is just one of several billionaires who are pouring money into Cuomo’s campaign in an apparent effort to stave off a more populist form of government in the city. Despite Cuomo’s promise to fight Trump, a number of MAGA fixtures, like Trump fan Bill Ackman, have thrown their support behind the former governor. Cuomo’s campaign has rested on a series of vague promises about improvements for city services and the bragging point that he “knows how government works.” Of course, NYC is a city where Republicans have a tough time in modern politics, so the Democratic primary is where the action is.

Mamdani, meanwhile, has championed many leftist economic policies, including the establishment of government-owned and operated supermarkets to bring down food prices. He has also championed rent freezes in a city where the cost of living just keeps going up. His critics have noted that Mamdani has substantially less government experience than Cuomo and, prior to his political career, was a rapper for several years known as “Mr. Cardamom.”

Cuomo notably served as the governor of New York from 2011 until 2021, when his administration combusted as a result of several scandals, including allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by former female aides. A criminal case against Cuomo was brought over the allegations, but the charges were dropped in January of 2022, with authorities citing a lack of evidence.

Palantir, meanwhile, has increasingly wedded itself to the Trump administration and is assisting the government with its deportation efforts, as well as in a controversial data centralization effort that has drawn criticism from privacy and civil liberties advocates.

Sega Throws Shade At Mario Kart During Sonic SGF Presentation

by admin June 7, 2025

At today’s Summer Game Fest showcase, Sega showed off Sonic Racing: Crossworlds. The kart racer is a big ol’ crossover event between the blue blur and other Sega characters. After previous leaks claimed Minecraft and Spongebob characters would join the racer’s roster, Sega revealed that several of its own heroes are joining. Joker from Persona 5, Hatsune Miku, and Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza will all be off to the races, as well as Steve from Minecraft, who was hinted at in the leaks. That’s all well and good, but one of the funnier moments of the showcase was Sonic producer Takashi Iizuka taking the stage right after and throwing some light shade at Nintendo and Mario Kart World.

Iizuka made what was seemingly a dig at Mario Kart World during his presentation. He never says the game by name, but says that, “unlike another kart racing game,” Crossworlds has cross-platform multiplayer across PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

The Best Reveals From The Game Awards 2023

It’s a bold jab to make at the Switch 2 kart racer while everyone is hootin’ and hollerin’ about it just after the system’s launch this week. But it also feels like a fun wink and nod toward the companies’ old rivalry. Back when Sega was making its own consoles and competing directly with Nintendo, the company wasn’t afraid to throw a punch in its marketing. The Sega Genesis tagline “Sega does what Nintendon’t” is still iconic, though it didn’t really pan out for Sega in the long run, given the company is no longer in the console-making business.

Either way, Sonic Racing: Crossworlds does have that cross-platform flex over Mario Kart, which is a Switch 2 exclusive. Sonic and friends are racing on just about every platform, so it will be more widely accessible. That being said, Mario Kart World is probably going to have an unheard of attach rate, given it’s the system seller for the Switch 2 right now. Sega probably knows that and is just having some light fun.

Sonic Racing: Crossworlds launches on September 25.

World’s first robot martial arts tournament throws down in China

by admin May 29, 2025

China just held the first-ever robot-only martial arts tournament, where machines could be seen kicking and throwing punches at each other.

Earlier this year, we saw a humanoid model of a robot patrolling the streets, which reminded us all of Robocop.

With technology only advancing, it seemed only a matter of time until we could finally see robots fighting each other. On May 25, 2025, our wish came true. China held the first-ever robot fighting tournament in Hangzhou, Zhejiang.

The tournament had Unitree’s G1 model, which weighed 35 kilograms and was 132 centimeters tall, pitted against each other in a boxing ring.

China has just held the first-ever robot kickboxing tournament

Broadcast by China Central Television, the fights during the China Media Group (CMG) World Robot Competition lasted three rounds and were scored based on hits on the head or body. Landing one punch was equivalent to scoring one point, while a kick gave three points.

Five points would be deducted if the robots fell. On the other hand, if they couldn’t get up within eight seconds of being knocked down, they’d lose 10 points, and the round would immediately end.

When it came to the actual fight, these machines were actually controlled by humans via remotes and voice commands. As seen in the footage from the broadcast, they’re capable of punching, kicking, and doing uppercuts. Think of it as an evolved Robot Wars from the early 2000s.

However, it’s safe to say that their overall movement isn’t the smoothest just yet; some lost their balance after walking backward or kicking. Ultimately, out of four robots, one operated by Chinese tech influencer Lu Xin ended up winning.

Speaking to CCTV, Unitree director Wang Qixin said teaching robots different movements is “not easy.

“We used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to train them. First, we captured the data of the movements of some professional kick-boxing athletes, and then the robots can learn these movements in the virtual world,” he explained.

Despite the overall challenge, this won’t be the last time we’ll see something like this. The EngineAI Robot Free Combat Tournament was also announced and will be held in December. According to the organizers, this time around, the event will test not only the robots’ physical limits but also their intelligence levels.
