Classic Anime Flick ‘Angel’s Egg’ Hits Theaters in November

by admin August 17, 2025

Before he helmed the first anime film adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, director Mamoru Oshii made his own original works, including Angel’s Egg. The film turns 40 years old later this year, and to celebrate, distributor GKids is bringing it to North American theaters for the first time.

Beginning November 19, theaters across the country will put a 4K restoration of the movie on the big screen. Created by Oshii and character designer Yoshitaka Amano, the post-apocalyptic film stars a young girl safeguarding an egg and a young boy with mysterious dreams about a bird. The movie was notably Oshii’s first original work—and has themes that would stick around in his later works—and has very little spoken dialogue. At the time, audiences didn’t fully connect with it because of its biblical allegories and meaning, but it has grown in estimation over time. This past May, it screened at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

After it leaves theaters, Angel’s Egg will land on HBO Max. Earlier this week, GKids announced a deal with the streamer to bring 20 live-action and animated adult movies to the platform, starting with Your Name, Shin Godzilla, and Perfect Blue on September 1. HBO Max already houses Studio Ghibli movies in the U.S., and in a press release, WB Discovery’s Royce Battleman said this new deal “allows us to continue delivering premium films to our subscribers and solidifies HBO Max’s position as a leading destination in the space.”

Later titles hitting HBO Max include Summer Wars, Wolf Children, and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’ Is Returning to Theaters, in a Truly Mega Way

by admin June 19, 2025

Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited dream project, came and went from theaters last year. Usually, after that, a film would show up on demand or for streaming but that wasn’t the case here. What was happening with Megalopolis? Now we know.

Starting July 20, Coppola’s film will be taken on the road for a series of events called “An Evening With Francis Ford Coppola and Megalopolis Screening.” It kicks off in Red Bank, NJ, before going to Port Chester, NY; Chicago, IL; Denver, CO; Dallas, TX; and San Francisco, CA. It includes a screening of the film, obviously, as well as an “interactive discussion” with Coppola called “How to Change Our Future.”

“This is the way Megalopolis was meant to be seen,” Coppola said in a statement. “In a large venue, with a crowd and followed by intense interactive discussions about the future.” You can get tickets on Ticketmaster, which appear to cost around $40.

Released last year, Megalopolis was the result of decades of planning and anticipation from the legendary director of The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and The Conversation. It cost well over $100 million and was paid for almost exclusively by Coppola himself, but it proceeded to bomb at the box office, grossing a little over $14 million. Nevertheless, the film’s huge ambition and beyond-weird performances, themes, and visuals gave it the beginnings of cult classic status. Physical versions of the film were released but nothing beyond that.

Adam Driver stars in the film as a visionary architect who wants to push his city into the future, only to run into a hard-nosed mayor, played by Giancarlo Esposito. Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, and Shia LaBeouf all get in the fun along with Aubrey Plaza as a character named Wow Platinum. Yes, it’s a movie where someone named “Wow Platinum” makes total sense.

We don’t think Megalopolis is a particularly good movie, but it’s certainly fascinating, worthy of discussion, and surely there won’t be too many more cases to see Coppola discuss his work in public in the coming years. If you’re a fan, take note.

That Silent Hill 2 Movie Will Hit Theaters In January 2026

by admin June 18, 2025

Return to Silent Hill, the next live-action Hollywood adaptation of the hit survival horror series, is set to arrive in theaters next year. There hasn’t been much news about the film in some time, with some wondering if it was going to be dumped on streaming services. But nope, it’s still coming to theaters.

A Typical Day On Persona 3 Reload’s Tatsumi Port Island

Let’s rewind a bit, because I feel like a lot of people might not even be aware that a third (!) Silent Hill movie is happening. In fact, it already happened. Return to Silent Hill has been done for a bit now, after it wrapped up shooting in 2023. It’s directed and co-written by Christophe Gans, the same guy who directed the weirdly good original Silent Hill film from 2006. This new film isn’t connected to that movie or the less popular 2012 sequel film, Silent Hill: Revelation. Instead, Return to Silent Hill is a standalone movie based heavily on Silent Hill 2.

On June 18, Deadline revealed that Cineverse, Bloody Disgusting, and Iconic Events Releasing—the same trio of companies responsible for Terrifier 3—are bringing Return to Silent Hill to theaters. The horror film will be released on January 23, which does make me nervous, as that’s historically the month when movie studios and production companies dump bad films into cinemas.

There is no trailer for the movie yet, but here’s an old teaser from 2022:

“Return to Silent Hill hits theaters at the perfect time,” said Mark Rupp, CFO/COO and co-founder of Iconic Events Releasing. “[It arrives after the] successful recent launch of the Silent Hill 2 game remake that the movie is based on, while also celebrating the 20th anniversary of the start of the horror film franchise.”

Yeah, that makes me even more nervous. The fact that the main reason this thing is getting a theatrical release is because the recent Silent Hill 2 remake did so well doesn’t fill me with confidence.

Regardless, in January 2026, we are getting a live-action adaptation of Silent Hill 2. If Return to Silent Hill turns out to be bad, well, at least we’ve got a bunch of Silent Hill games and remakes to play these days.

Laika’s ‘ParaNorman’ Is Coming Back to Theaters

by admin June 14, 2025

If you liked ParaNorman back in the day and wished to see it on the big screen again, you’re in luck.

Laika’s stop-motion horror movie is getting a one-week theatrical re-release in 2D and remastered RealD3D on October 23 internationally and October 25 in the U.S. The film’s return marks Laika’s second movie to come to back to theatres following Coraline in 2024 for its 15th birthday, and this will be part of the studio’s 20th anniversary celebration. Screenings will also come with The Thrifting, a CG short starring Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard and Anna Kendrick reprising her role as Norman’s sister Courtney.

ParaNorman released in 2012 and was Laika’s second feature film. It earned solid reviews at the time, made $107 million, and racked up several nominations between the Oscars, Golden Globes, and animation-focused Annie Awards. Laika’s chief marketing officer David Burke called the film “a breakthrough… bringing it back to theaters in stunning remastered 3D, paired with a brand-new short film, is an invitation for audiences to rediscover the heart and humor of Norman’s world—or experience it for the first time.”

“Today, horror has become a shared family ritual, and ParaNorman sits right at the intersection of spooky and meaningful. It’s the perfect ‘starter horror’—a gateway into genre storytelling that’s as thoughtful as it is thrilling.”

Tickets for ParaNorman aren’t on sale yet, but when they are, you can get an alert for when to snag ’em here.

Phasmophobia Movie Coming From Blumhouse To Haunt Theaters

Phasmophobia Movie Coming From Blumhouse To Haunt Theaters

by admin June 4, 2025

Phasmophobia, the popular ghosthunting sim from Kinetic Games, is being turned into a horror movie. The film is coming from Blumhouse, a production company that has made a great number of horror movies in recent years, including Five Nights at Freddy’s, Paranormal Activity, The Purge, and Insidious, among many more. James Wan’s company, Atomic Monster, is also attached to the project.

The game studio’s director and lead developer, Daniel Knight, said in a press release that the team is “thrilled” to announce the movie is in the works. “We never could’ve imagined the incredible heights this game would reach when it launched five years ago, and we’re so thankful to our amazing community for the lasting impact Phasmophobia has had in the gaming space and beyond,” Knight continued. “Working with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster marks an incredible new chapter for the game, and we can’t wait to share more as the project develops.”

Phasmophobia launched as a Steam Early Access game in 2020 and quickly became a hit for friend groups looking for a fun (and terrifying) co-op game during the pandemic. It’s gone on to sell more than 22 million copies, and last year debuted on Xbox and PlayStation.

The next major update for the game is called Chronicle and seeks to overhaul the game’s leveling system and in-game rewards. Sometime next year, the already-frightening game is meant to get even scarier with its Horror 2.0 update.

No release window for the Phasmophobia movie was announced, and it’s worth noting that video game movies get announced much more often than they get made. However, given the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie’s success, one could argue Blumhouse knows how to get these projects to the finish line–a sequel to that one is set to arrive later this year.

The Way of Water’ is Surfing Back to Theaters

by admin May 25, 2025

Later this year, James Cameron is taking us all back to Pandora with Avatar: Fire & Ash. To prepare that, and also to make a lot more money, Disney’s bringing The Way of Water back to theaters.

The aquatic sequel will get a new theatrical run starting October 3 and wrapping on October 10. At time of writing, Disney hasn’t revealed whether this “limited engagement” will feature anything extra like extended or deleted scenes or a special look for Fire & Ash. Still, if you’re a fan of the movie, just seeing it on the big screen again may be worth it, especially since it also includes 3D and IMAX.

After a looooooooong 13-year wait, Avatar: The Way of Water released in 2022 to strong reviews and became a box office success. It’s currently made $2.320 million and stands as the third highest-grossing movie of all time behind Avengers: Endgame and the original Avatar. Between the two movies’ release, the first Avatar returned to theaters three times: in 2010 and 2022 before Water’s release, and exclusively for China in 2021. This is Water’s first time back in theaters, and with every studio bit by the re-release bug, this might not be the last time we see the Sully clan with the Metkayina clan.

Avatar: Fire & Ash releases on December 19.
