WIRED Tests Dozens of Air Purifiers a Year. Here’s What We Look For (2025)

by admin August 18, 2025

If I put a box on its side and cannot grasp the product to lift it from its box, then that’s the first strike. WIRED considers accessibility, and this means handles and wheels on heavier air purifiers. When I review a unit, I think about those with less upper body strength moving the appliances, and whether they’d be able to maneuver it around their home. I move air purifiers all around my apartment; I shouldn’t have to bend at the knees to adjust a purifier’s location.

Photograph: Lisa Wood Shapiro

I was able to move the 50-pound ProX using its hidden handles and built-in lockable wheels.

After an air purifier is unboxed, it’s time to pair it with its app. Not all the air purifiers WIRED tests have an app, but if one does, the pairing process should not be complicated, nor should it require a lot of time. The best user experience is when an air purifier has a QR code that opens the app and adds the device. An app with a simple dashboard, graph that corresponds to the AQI color codes, and a smart remote is usually all that’s needed, though it’s a bonus if the app gives the filter life expectancy.

I prefer a simple power bar design that shows the percentage of filter life used. And while air purifier models give recommendations for when to replace the filter, like every six months, or when the replace filter indicator light glows on the appliance, nothing beats the heads-up of knowing exactly how much filter life has been used.

Internal Air Sensors, Lights, and Scores

While some air purifiers had internal air sensors when I first started testing in 2018, the majority of current purifiers we test now have them. If the purifier has internal sensors, there is usually an indicator light. Next question: Does the air purifier have an easy-to-see or read indicator light or air quality index (AQI) score? If it’s a smart air purifier, then the sensor’s readings feed into the device’s app. And I prefer an indicator light that follows the EPA’s color codes for the air quality index. That means green for good air, yellow for moderate, orange for unhealthy for sensitive groups, red for unhealthy, purple for very unhealthy, and maroon for hazardous. There are some companies, like Coway, that have their own take on the color codes, which can be confusing.

Photograph: Lisa Wood Shapiro

While Coway’s air purifiers are consistently WIRED’s top-rated picks, if I could change one thing about them, it would be their custom color scale, where blue means good and green means moderate. More and more air purifiers are also displaying their internal sensors’ air quality numbers. Most times, air purifiers will show a reading of PM 2.5. If the internal sensor senses an uptick in PM 2.5, the auto mode will trigger a higher fan speed, the indicator light might show orange and red along with the PM 2.5 number like 100. I should be able to see that light across the room, and the numbers should be easy to read.

Then there are some models, like those from Shark, that use their own scoring system. A score of 100 represents good air on the display of Shark’s NeverChange, for example, but 100 PM 2.5 would be considered unhealthy.

Noise and Size Matter

I think the labeling on air purifiers is confusing on purpose. Often the square footage listed on a product is for one air exchange per hour at the purifier’s highest setting. An air exchange is how many times an air purifier can clean the air of a room in an hour. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends five air exchanges an hour. If you have a 200-square-foot room, your air purifier needs to be able to pull the air of the room into the filter using the fan. That air runs through the filter, PM 2.5 and VOCs are captured by the filter, and the clean air is released back into the air at least five times in an hour. Often, WIRED won’t recommend air purifiers that can only clean unusually small spaces. And while those cute tabletop or miniature air purifiers seem like an easy solution, they are usually too tiny to effectively clean the air in an average-size room.

WIRED also uses a decibel meter to check the manufacturer’s decibel claims. Most of the time, the decibels are close to those listed on the purifier’s user manual. Sometimes they are louder. What’s too loud? The hum of a refrigerator is somewhere between 40 and 50 decibels; a conversation is around 60 decibels. Ideally, an air purifier should be able to clean the air in your room five times an hour without sounding like a conversation. And if an air purifier is louder—a lot louder—than the manufacturer claims, we’ll include that in our review or won’t recommend it.

If an air purifier is too loud at its highest fan setting, users are likely to turn down that fan speed to a quieter and less effective setting, rendering the air purifier into nothing more than a wellness prop. Another issue WIRED takes into account is when the air intake overpowers the external vents, causing unsightly clumps of pet hair to accumulate on the outside of the air purifier.

UK’s Royal Navy tests 40-foot submarine drone which can be operated from ‘the other side of the world’

by admin August 17, 2025

The UK’s Royal Navy has shared an update on its progress in the development and testing of a large unmanned submarine. The new submarine drone is actually ‘extra large’ at 12m (~40ft) and is thus classed as an Extra Large Uncrewed Underwater Vehicle (XLUUV). One of the headlining abilities of this unmanned vessel, aptly dubbed Excalibur, is the ability to control it while it is “submerged on the other side of the world.”

We got some more Excalibur specs ahead of the latest round of testing, when this XLUUV was first unwrapped, back in May. In addition to its length, noted above, we know this sub is 2m (~6.5ft) wide, and displaces 19 tonnes of seawater. The project caps the three-year-long Project Cetus, and becomes the largest uncrewed underwater vessel available to the Royal Navy.

Australia to the UK

In the recent sea trials the UK and Australia, as part of AUKUS Pillar II, tested the capabilities of Excalibur. The vessel, built by Plymouth (UK) based MSubs, was successfully operated in UK waters from a remote operating center in Australia.

Thus, it is reasonable to claim the unmanned Excalibur has a long reach. According to the Royal Navy blog, the Australian controllers were “more than 10,000 miles” away.

Joining the UK and Australia, the U.S. (as part of AUKUS) has been taking part in Exercise Talisman Sabre and the trials of this XLUUV. A growing number of non AUKUS nations, such as France, Japan, and South Korea, either participated or observed in this large military exercise, in the waters near Papua New Guinea this July.

How deadly is Excalibur?

So, what is an Excalibur XLUUV capable of? The Royal Navy sources don’t seem to be very specific about what this large drone can do. However, we saw a report around the time of its unveiling which shone a little more light on the vessel’s potential capabilities.

In brief, Navy Lookout describes the Excalibur as a technology demonstrator. Its designers are trialing “long-endurance surveillance, seabed warfare, and deployment of sensors or payloads in denied or contested environment,” says the navy news and analysis site.

‘The Wizard of Oz’ at the Sphere Tests the Ways AI Can Preserve Classic Cinema

by admin June 26, 2025

The Wizard of Oz is landing on the Vegas strip at the Sphere this summer, and it’s not without some controversy.

The Warner Bros. classic Technicolor feature starring Judy Garland is being presented in a special limited engagement at the massive spherical stadium venue in Las Vegas, presumably in between music artist residencies. The state-of-the-art immersive entertainment center made its debut as a must-visit attraction with rock band U2.

Now in a new venture, the Sphere collaborates with Warner Bros. Entertainment to celebrate The Wizard of Oz by giving it a refresh for the screen-filling presentation that’s caused a stir in the world of cinema. Recently, it was reported that to get the classic film to fit the scale of the sphere, AI would be used visually in an extensive manner.

In a Mashable story, Sphere Entertainment executive chairman and CEO Jim Dolan talked about the venue’s collaboration with Google Cloud. “The power of generative AI, combined with Google’s infrastructure and expertise, is helping us to achieve something extraordinary,” he said. “We needed a partner who could push boundaries alongside our teams at Sphere Studios and Magnopus, and Google was the only company equipped to meet the challenge on the world’s highest resolution LED screen.”

It might have ruffled the feathers of film fanatics and conservationists at the thought, with many decrying what’s to stop them from tampering with the MGM masterpieces Warner Bros. Discovery now owns—or worse, somehow attempting to enhance Judy Garland’s performance.

In a recent interview with Variety, Carolyn Blackwood, head of Sphere Studios, discussed how the generative AI’s use will stick to only upscaling the vintage picture. “If there was a closeup before and it was just Dorothy, but you knew that the Tin Man and the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion were in the scene with her, but you didn’t see it in the original, you now you go wide and they’re all there together.”

So things like legs on characters and expanded figures, as well as landscapes, are not off the table. It remains to be seen how that affects characters in the space that didn’t have reactions filmed. Will the technology generate a performance based on cut scenes or composite from knowledge of the film or the actor’s film legacy? That’s where it feels like it’s getting a little sacrilegious.

Blackwood assures, however, that Garland’s vocal performance will remain untouched. “People have asked us, because they know that we’re obviously using AI technologies on this film visually, a lot of questions about whether or not we were gonna do that to the vocals. We didn’t. This is Judy Garland.”

Paul Freeman, principal audio artist at the Sphere, added that the touches are solely intended to enhance the film into an immersive experience like no other. So while music stems and other character lines get some cleaning up, Garland remains pristine. “One of the cool byproducts of that is, number one, it gives you a very, very, very immersive feeling. So when you listen to ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and you’re hearing the real Judy Garland vocal placed position where it should be based on the picture, and you’re hearing that orchestra enveloping you, it is a version that you’ve never heard before, and you’ll never hear again. It’s perfect. It is the perfect version of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow.’”

But will using a Hollywood crown jewel to test the waters of AI preserve the classics for new formats, or will it open the floodgates to remixing them with new tech until they are no longer the instantly recognizable beloved pieces of cinema history?

The Wizard of Oz begins its Sphere engagement August 28.

USMNT ease pressure with big win, but tougher tests ahead

by admin June 16, 2025

Jeff Carlisle covers MLS and the U.S. national team for ESPN FC.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — After a turbulent run-up to this summer’s Gold Cup, the U.S. men’s national team can breathe again.

In the throes of a four-game, home losing streak under new-ish manager Mauricio Pochettino, the USMNT began the Gold Cup Sunday with a resounding 5-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago. The scoreline was by no means a fluke, either. The U.S. dominated from start to finish, and received a pair of goals from Malik Tillman and another from Patrick Agyemang when he deflected in Diego Luna’s goal-bound effort. Substitutes Brenden Aaronson and Haji Wright rounded out the scoring in the final 10 minutes, padding the USMNT’s goal differential in the process.

It made for the kind of comfortable win that seemed beyond this group of players just last Tuesday following their 4-0 humbling against Switzerland. But the funk surrounding the USMNT went deeper than that result.

Just how low had the U.S. sunk? The USMNT hadn’t lost four consecutive games at home since 1988, when it lost two games each to Chile and Ecuador. That was at the tail end of a 40-year barren spell between World Cup appearances for the USMNT. The current streak also involved almost the entirety of the U.S. player pool from stars to second-teamers. It couldn’t entirely be blamed on youth.

Then there was the off-field drama. Among the more dominant storylines surrounding the side was Christian Pulisic’s decision to take the summer off and not play in the Gold Cup, which resulted in a chorus of criticism from fans as well as former U.S. internationals like Landon Donovan.

Pulisic’s father, Mark, then came to his son’s defense with the help of ChatGPT. That was followed by Pulisic saying he didn’t understand manager Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to turn down his offer to play in two friendlies and bypass the Gold Cup, to which Pochettino reminded the sometime U.S. captain that he is the one in charge, not the players.

The only way for the USMNT to really change the conversation was by winning. It didn’t really matter that the victory came over the 100th-ranked team in the world — one shorn of key forward Levi García who, in an only-in-Concacaf move, picked this weekend to get married. (He’ll be back for T&T’s remaining games.) This youthful side, with seven starters having less than seven caps entering the match, needed to start building a foundation somehow, and they did precisely that.

“I think [Sunday’s win] is about [congratulating] them and I think the first half there’s a lot of positive things, that we need to keep evolving in different areas,” said Pochettino. “But I think overall it was a good game and three points. [It’s] important to keep working.

“Nothing is done, but yes, to feel the victory and being more positive in the next few days, I think it’s important to grow that confidence in between us.”

A mix of emerging stars and veteran talent helped the USMNT put together a dominant win on Sunday, a result that shows this team is slowly coalescing into a unit. Matthew Huang/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

It helped that the more veteran elements of the U.S. lineup provided the required platform for success. Center backs Tim Ream and Chris Richards gave outside backs Alex Freeman and Max Arfsten the security to perform their two-way roles on offense and defense with confidence, Arfsten in particular pushing higher up the field. Luca de la Torre provided stability to Sebastian Berhalter in midfield, while Tillman led the attack with two goals, allowing Luna to buzz around defensively and provide two assists, with Jack McGlynn making attacking contributions as well.

Granted, it helps that the U.S. was playing T&T and not Switzerland but scaling the rock face is a lot easier when the handholds are within reach. It will make for a greater level of confidence when the tougher moments arrive, and could apply to both team veterans and youngsters alike.

For Tillman this kind of performance has been a long time coming, so much so that teammate Chris Richards was shocked that the two goals were Tillman’s first with the national team. But more is being asked of the PSV attacker in this environment than in previous camps with the national team. He’s as soft-spoken as they come, but is ready to take on a bigger role.

“I’m quite confident. I had a good season at PSV,” said Tillman, who notched 16 goals and five assists for his Dutch team in 2024-25 (34 games, all competitions). “I’ve been here quite some time now. So yeah, I just take the responsibility. I like to take it and try to show it to everyone else.”

That dynamic between youth and experience was also visible through a more unsung contribution deeper in midfield. Tyler Adams was out with a foot injury and Johnny Cardoso was sidelined due to an illness, which meant Pochettino had to mine the depth chart/ In this instance he opted for De la Torre and Berhalter — the latter sat in a deeper role, allowing de la Torre to sniff out opportunities while also tracking back when needed.

Overall the combination showed promise, and is the latest sign that De la Torre is another player who is making an impression on Pochettino. The San Diego FC midfielder has long been a performer that knits the attack together in the middle third. But in this case, he’s picked his moments to push further up field when the situation demands it.

Keller wonders why USMNT has so much disconnect

Kasey Keller breaks down the situation between Christian Pulisic and Mauricio Pochettino, in which Pochettino said Pulisic isn’t allowed to dictate games he plays in.

Pochettino liked what he saw out of both players, and is pleased that another midfield combination is emerging.

“I think the football relationship between Luca and [Sebastian], it was fantastic and they controlled the game,” said Pochettino. “They played really well. I am so happy. They both show that in that position they can fit very well.

“Of course we didn’t have the help of Tyler and Johnny, but this is a good thing — a period of opportunity to see [the other two] players. But sometimes [they] surprise you and say, ‘Okay, they take the opportunity,’ and that is good because the competition is going to be higher now.”

Luna, for one, felt the presence of his veteran teammates, as well as the love of 30 friends and family members in the stands.

“It allows me to get the ball and combine,” Luna said about playing with Tillman and de la Torre. “And then have guys that have experience and have been in tough moments, be there and help along the way. [Having] good players around you always allows you to be more confident and have trust within the team.”

Luna’s two-assist performance, including a steal and feed to Tillman for the USMNT’s second goal, was another step forward for the native of nearby Sunnyvale, Calif. The bear hug he got from Pochettino after being substituted in the 74th minute showed his continued ascendency.

The extent to which this mix of youth and experience can move forward will get its next test in four days against Saudi Arabia in Austin, Tex. That is bound to be a much tougher assignment than Sunday’s match. But for now, the clouds have parted a bit, and the hope is that the coming forecast for the USMNT involves even more sunshine.

Shiba Inu (SHIB) to Add Zero? Three XRP Tests Just Happened, Ethereum (ETH) Golden Cross Next in Line?

by admin June 16, 2025

  • Shiba Inu in trouble?
  • Ethereum’s chance

XRP has once again demonstrated its tenacity by surviving the 200-day exponential moving average, a crucial technical zone. Three times in the past few trading sessions XRP has tested the 200 EMA, each time recovering with significant strength. The long-term trend indicator is now a significant support level and a crucial indicator of investor sentiment as a result of these repeated tests.

As can be seen from the chart, XRP regularly fell to test the 200 EMA (black line) in the $2.09-$2.10 range during June. Every touch led to a strong recovery, indicating that when the asset reaches this fundamental support buyers are acting quickly. Bulls need a stable base to form during erratic market conditions, and this type of repeated interaction with a major moving average without breaking below it frequently suggests the formation of one.

XRP/USDT Chart by TradingView

Although XRP is still technically range-bound between its 200 EMA support and its 50 EMA resistance, a breakout could occur soon as this range narrows. There is still potential for an upward push without going into overbought territory because the RSI indicator is still in the mid-40s, indicating neutral momentum. Although there hasn’t been a significant increase in volume traders, increasing confidence is demonstrated by the steady buying interest at support zones. XRP may quickly retest the $2.60-$2.70 range if it is able to turn its 50 and 100 EMA levels (~$2.25-$2.30) into support.

All things considered, these three successful tests of the 200 EMA are more than just transient bounces; they strengthen XRP’s structural integrity and pave the way for a more robust recovery, assuming the overall market stays steady. To validate this bullish setup bulls will now be watching for a clear push above the short-term EMAs.

Shiba Inu in trouble?

Shiba Inu is on the verge of a serious psychological collapse, also known as the adding a zero scenario. The asset has gone into freefall, and the likelihood that SHIB will plunge even deeper into the abyss is growing every day based on the current price performance. As of this writing, SHIB is trading significantly below important moving averages such as the 50, 100 and 200 EMAs at around $0.00001195.

For weeks, price action has been trapped beneath these resistance levels and every attempt at a recovery has fallen short, indicating a market devoid of conviction or robust buying momentum. Technically speaking, the key structural level that held the line during previous corrections, the support zone around $0.00001231, has been broken.

You Might Also Like

There is more to this breakdown than just another dip. Investors and whales may be losing hope in the asset’s immediate recovery, according to this potential signal. The volume does not exhibit any bullish divergence. Actually, it has been steadily dropping, which indicates that even at these discounted levels interest is waning.

The RSI is hovering close to oversold territory, but it is only a warning and not a buying signal in the absence of bullish confirmation. The expression “adding a zero” describes a price tier drop that adds a new decimal place, in other words, SHIB falling below $0.00001000. That level might be broken sooner rather than later if the present selling pressure is not stopped.

The odds are still stacked against further downside unless SHIB experiences a significant reversal with volume confirmation or a significant catalyst. As of right now, the meme coin is not motivated by hype, which is a significant issue in a bear market. Investors should exercise caution as SHIB runs the risk of turning into a warning story rather than a success story.

Ethereum’s chance

Ethereum is on the cusp of a potentially technical advancement: the creation of a golden cross. The setup is growing more likely every day as the 50-day moving average quickly approaches the 200-day moving average. The crossover will probably occur unless there is a significant correction in ETH over the next week, which historically indicates the beginning of a mid- to long-term bullish trend.

Ethereum, which is currently trading at about $2,521, has proven to be very resilient despite recent market volatility. After recovering from the lower edge of a clearly defined ascending channel, the asset has continued to trade above its 100 EMA. This rebound was not an accident, rather, it serves as further evidence that these areas are still seen by market players as good places to accumulate.

You Might Also Like

With no significant sell-offs in recent days, volume is still steady and the RSI is slightly below 50, providing some neutral breathing room for a possible momentum buildup. The foundations of Ethereum still contribute to the stabilization of investor sentiment.

The story is further fueled by the golden cross setup. Although there is no guarantee of immediate upside, this pattern frequently signals a change in the sentiment of the medium-term trend. The bullish crossover is nearly certain if Ethereum stays above the crucial support level between $2,450 and $2,500 and stays clear of falling below the 100 EMA.

Confirmation indicators for investors include rising volume on green days, RSI above 50 and solid closes above $2,600. These would imply that Ethereum is not only gaining traction but also laying the groundwork for a long-term breakout, possibly reaching $3,000 within the next month. If it is verified, the golden cross might be the catalyst.

Tesla blows past stopped school bus and hits kid-sized dummies in Full Self-Driving tests

by admin June 15, 2025

A revealing demonstration with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving mode is raising concerns about whether fully autonomous cars are ready to hit the streets. Tesla has reportedly pushed back the rollout of its upcoming all-electric, fully autonomous car called the Cybercab, while a recent demonstration in Austin, Texas showed a Tesla Model Y running through a school bus’ flashing lights and stop signs, and hitting child-size mannequins. The tests were conducted by The Dawn Project, along with Tesla Takedown and ResistAustin, and showed Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software repeating the same mistake eight times.

It’s worth noting that Tesla’s autonomous driving feature is formally known as Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and “requires a fully attentive driver and will display a series of escalating warnings requiring driver response.” Tesla even has a warning that says, “failure to follow these instructions could cause damage, serious injury or death.” However, it’s not the first time that Tesla’s FSD software has found itself in hot water. The Dawn Project, whose founder Dan O’Dowd is the CEO of a company that offers competing automated driving system software, previously took out ads warning about the dangers of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving and how it would fail to yield around school buses. In April 2024, a Model S using Full Self-Driving was involved in a crash in Washington, where a motorcyclist died.

With anticipation building up for an eventual Cybercab rollout on June 22, the company’s CEO posted some additional details on X. According to Elon Musk, Tesla is “being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift.” Beyond that, Musk also posted that the “first Tesla that drives itself from factory end of line all the way to a customer house is June 28.”
