Promising Minecraft-like Hytale cancelled after ten years in development

by admin June 23, 2025

Promising Minecraft-like sandbox adventure Hytale has been cancelled after a decade of development, and creator Hypixel Studios is “winding down” its operations.

Hytale began development in 2015, and was Hypixel’s attempt at combining the mini-games found on its hugely popular eponymous Minecraft server – which has been visited by more than 18m visitors since its inception in 2013 – with its own RPG-like, Minecraft-style sandbox experience, built from the ground up. And there’s been a lot of buzz around the project for a long time, with League of Legends developer Riot Games investing millions in Hytale prior to acquiring Hypixel in 2020. But now the plug has been pulled.

Hypixel announced the “incredibly tough news” in a lengthy statement on its website. “This is not the outcome any of us – at Hypixel or at Riot – wanted,” it wrote. “But after years of pushing forward, adapting, and exploring every possible path, it became clear we couldn’t bring Hytale to life in a way that truly delivered on its promise.”

“Game development is brutally hard – especially when you’re trying to build something original that speaks to a creative, passionate community,” it continued. “Over time, as our vision evolved and the genre matured around us, the bar kept rising. Our technical ambitions grew more complex, and even after a major reboot of the game engine, the team found that Hytale still wasn’t as far along as it needed to be. It became clear we’d need a lot more time to get it to a place where it could support the ambitious vision for the game.

“We looked at reducing scope, adjusting timelines, and finding new angles to keep moving forward. But each of those options would have meant compromising on what made Hytale special in the first place. It wouldn’t have been the game we set out to make. And it wouldn’t have been the game you deserve. This is a painful decision. We still believe in Hytale. We believe in the team, and are forever grateful to every member, past or present, who poured their love into the game. We’re also incredibly proud of the work we did: the world we imagined, the risks we took, and the heart we poured into this project. None of that can be taken away. And just to clarify – this doesn’t affect the Hypixel server on Minecraft. It’s run separately from Hypixel Studios and will continue to operate as usual.”

Hypixel’s statement suggests it had attempted to “see if there were investors or acquirers who could continue to help carry Hytale forward”, but with no more funding coming from Riot and the project now dead, employees – said to number “100+” on Hypixel’s website – are being “supported with generous severance and resources to help them find what’s next”. Hypixel itself is “beginning the process of winding down… over the next few months”.

“To our community: thank you,” the statement concludes. “Your belief in Hytale kept us going through thick and thin… Even though we’re closing this chapter, the spirit of Hytale and everything we hoped it could be will stay with us. We’re proud of what we built, and we’ll carry those lessons forward into whatever comes next.”

Surprise, The Witcher 3’s getting one more cheeky patch ten years on so you can enjoy mod support across consoles and PC for Gerry’s big adventure

The Witcher 3. It’s a decade old now. CD Projekt’s well on its way with The Witcher 4. However, in a really cool turn of events, the studio’s now realed it’ll be putting out one more patch for TW3 later this year, finally bringing mods for it to consoles.

Yep, clearly CDPR didn’t get enough of a kick out of releasing those REDkit modding tools on PC and seeing all the cool stuff folks got up to with them. We need more Witcher 3 modding, and by Sigi Reuven’s bald bonce, we’re getting it.

“As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we’re excited to share some good news for our players and modders,” CD Projekt wrote in its announcement, “Later this year, we will release one more patch for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This update will introduce cross-platform mod support across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S via mod.io.

“Creating, sharing, and enjoying mods will be easier and more accessible, as players on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S will be able to share a modding ecosystem.”

#10YearsofTheWitcher3 and one more patch! 🎉

You’ll need a mod.io account to download mods on console, and it’s worth noting CD Projekt reccomends that mods available via this new support be made using its official REDkit tools on PC, with that being a hard rule for any console mods which use scripts (so I’d imagine most complex stuff). That said, it adds that “Cross-Platform Mod Support will support mods created in other ways too”.

Obviously, if you’re playing on PC, you’ll be good to keep on doing what you’ve been doing to get your Witcher 3 mods if you wish.

CD Projekt says it’ll share more info, such as a concrete release date, in the run up to the patch’s deployment later this year. Until then, maybe plot out where you hope to sail your Jankdaw.

Will you be hopping back into The Witcher 3 for another playthrough once this mod support drops? Let us know below!

Square Enix settles copyright lawsuit with mobile studio HK Ten Tree

by admin May 27, 2025

Square Enix has settled a lawsuit with a mobile game publisher it had accused of using jointly-made assets from a cancelled title without permission.

As reported by Automaton, Square Enix partnered with HK Ten Tree to collaborate on Front Mission 2089: Borderscape, which was announced in April 2022. By October 2022 the game had been cancelled.

In March this year, however, Square Enix accused Ten Tree of using assets created for Front Mission in its turn-based mecha game, Metal Storm (aka Mecharashi in some Asian territories), and sued for copyright infringement.

Ten Tree promptly and publicly responded to the lawsuit, publishing a statement on Metal Storm’s website that said the firm was seeking an “amicable” resolution with Square Enix. Though Square Enix had initially sought to block Mecharashi’s US release until the disputed assets were removed, as well as $150,000 per copyright infraction, a new statement from Ten Tree now states the two companies have reached a settlement, although the terms of that settlement have not yet been made public. Square Enix therefore dropped its lawsuit on May 20.

“Our company and Square Enix have reached an agreement to settle the dispute regarding our smart device game app Metal Storm,” a statement on Ten Tree’s website explained (as translated by machine).

“We will continue to strive to provide better services to our users. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused. We hope you will continue to enjoy the game.”
