OpenAI’s Teen Safety Features Will Walk a Thin Line

by admin September 17, 2025

OpenAI announced new teen safety features for ChatGPT on Tuesday as part of an ongoing effort to respond to concerns about how minors engage with chatbots. The company is building an age-prediction system that identifies if a user is under 18 years old and routes them to an “age-appropriate” system that blocks graphic sexual content. If the system detects that the user is considering suicide or self-harm, it will contact the user’s parents. In cases of imminent danger, if a user’s parents are unreachable, the system may contact the authorities.

In a blog post about the announcement, CEO Sam Altman wrote that the company is attempting to balance freedom, privacy, and teen safety.

“We realize that these principles are in conflict, and not everyone will agree with how we are resolving that conflict,” Altman wrote. “These are difficult decisions, but after talking with experts, this is what we think is best and want to be transparent in our intentions.”

While OpenAI tends to prioritize privacy and freedom for adult users, for teens the company says it puts safety first. By the end of September, the company will roll out parental controls so that parents can link their child’s account to their own, allowing them to manage the conversations and disable features. Parents can also receive notifications when “the system detects their teen is in a moment of acute distress,” according to the company’s blog post, and set limits on the times of day their children can use ChatGPT.

The moves come as deeply troubling headlines continue to surface about people dying by suicide or committing violence against family members after engaging in lengthy conversations with AI chatbots. Lawmakers have taken notice, and both Meta and OpenAI are under scrutiny. Earlier this month, the Federal Trade Commission asked Meta, OpenAI, Google, and other AI firms to hand over information about how their technologies impact kids, according to Bloomberg.

At the same time, OpenAI is still under a court order mandating that it preserve consumer chats indefinitely—a fact that the company is extremely unhappy about, according to sources I’ve spoken to. Today’s news is both an important step toward protecting minors and a savvy PR move to reinforce the idea that conversations with chatbots are so personal that consumer privacy should only be breached in the most extreme circumstances.

“A Sexbot Avatar in ChatGPT”

From the sources I’ve spoken to at OpenAI, the burden of protecting users weighs heavily on many researchers. They want to create a user experience that is fun and engaging, but it can quickly veer into becoming disastrously sycophantic. It’s positive that companies like OpenAI are taking steps to protect minors. At the same time, in the absence of federal regulation, there’s still nothing forcing these firms to do the right thing.

In a recent interview, Tucker Carlson pushed Altman to answer exactly who is making these decisions that impact the rest of us. The OpenAI chief pointed to the model behavior team, which is responsible for tuning the model for certain attributes. “The person I think you should hold accountable for those calls is me,” Altman added. “Like, I’m a public face. Eventually, like, I’m the one that can overrule one of those decisions or our board.”

Roblox hit with wrongful death lawsuit following a teen player’s suicide

by admin September 13, 2025

Following her son’s suicide, Becca Dallas filed a potentially groundbreaking lawsuit against Roblox and Discord, accusing the platforms of wrongful death. As first reported by The New York Times, the lawsuit recounts the events leading up to Ethan Dallas’ death, detailing his interactions with a player named Nate. According to the report, Nate was likely a 37-year-old man named Timothy O’Connor, who was previously arrested on charges of “possessing child pornography and transmitting harmful material to minors.” The report added that Ethan opened up about these incidents to his mom before committing suicide four months after the confession.

The lawsuit could be the first of its kind against Roblox, according to NYTimes, considering it attributes some blame to the gaming platform that’s home to tens of millions of underaged players. In a statement responding to the report, a Roblox spokesperson said that child safety issues are seen across the industry and that the company was working on new safety features, while also complying with law enforcement.

This isn’t the first time Roblox has faced complaints of being a dangerous place for underage players. In August, Louisiana’s attorney general, Liz Murrill, filed a lawsuit that claimed Roblox doesn’t “implement basic safety controls” to protect its underage user base. That lawsuit follows a similar investigation launched by Florida’s attorney general James Uthmeier, who demanded answers to the reports of Roblox reportedly exposing kids to “harmful content and bad actors.” Roblox has taken steps to combat these allegations, including tightening restrictions on its Experiences, and more recently, expanding its age estimation tool to all users.

Pope Leo XIV declares teen internet star ‘God’s influencer’ and first millennial saint

by admin September 8, 2025

A tech-savvy teen who died in 2006 has been named the first-ever millennial saint by Pope Leo XIV, who dubbed the late British-Italian internet star ‘God’s influencer.’

Carlo Acutis died at 15 years old, but his legacy lives on thanks to Pope Leo’s canonization of him as a saint nearly two decades after his death.

Growing up in the 90s and 2000s, Acutis developed an intense interest in video games and computers, even teaching himself how to program and create websites.

He used this passion for technology to make web pages for his school and parish, most notably building a site that documented “Eucharistic miracles” and supposed apparitions of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.

Focolare MediaCarlo Acutis was 15 years old when he died in 2006. Now, nearly 20 years later, he has been canonized as the first millennial saint.

After turning 15, Acutis was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukaemia, a type of cancer that affects the body’s white blood cells. He died from this condition mere days after being diagnosed when his parents took him to the hospital for a sore throat.

Teen gamer becomes ‘God’s first influencer’ & millennial saint

In the years since his death, Acutis has been revered by the Catholic community for using his early adoption of technology and the internet to catechize users about the faith — and in 2025, newly-appointed Pope Leo XIV officially canonized him as a saint.

“The greatest risk in life is to waste it outside of God’s plan,” Leo said in his September 7 address, saying that new saints “are an invitation to all of us, especially young people, not to squander our lives, but to direct them upwards and make them masterpieces.”

Speaking to PBS, 27-year-old Roman citizen Leopoldo Antimi echoed the sentiments of other Italian Catholics regarding Acutis’ legacy.

“I learned from different people what his professors, his teachers said about his joy and the light he carried around him,” he told the outlet. “So for me personally as an Italian, even on social networks that are used so much, it is important to have him as an influencer.”

This is the latest moment from Pope Leo XIV to go viral following his induction to the Papacy earlier in 2025, during which it was revealed he is related to Justin Bieber, Madonna, and even Angelina Jolie, on top of being the first American Pope to hold the office.
