Sam Altman says ChatGPT will stop talking about suicide with teens

by admin September 17, 2025

On Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that the company was attempting to balance privacy, freedom, and teen safety — principles that, he admitted, were in conflict. His blog post came hours before a Senate hearing focused on examining the harm of AI chatbots, held by the subcommittee on crime and counterterrorism and featuring some parents of children who died by suicide after talking to chatbots.

“We have to separate users who are under 18 from those who aren’t,” Altman wrote in the post, adding that the company is in the process of building an “age-prediction system to estimate age based on how people use ChatGPT. If there is doubt, we’ll play it safe and default to the under-18 experience. In some cases or countries we may also ask for an ID.”

Altman also said the company plans to apply different rules to teen users, including veering away from flirtatious talk or engaging in conversations about suicide or self-harm, “even in a creative writing setting. And, if an under-18 user is having suicidal ideation, we will attempt to contact the users’ parents and if unable, will contact the authorities in case of imminent harm.”

Altman’s comments come after the company shared plans earlier this month for parental controls within ChatGPT, including linking an account with a parent’s, disabling chat history and memory for a teen’s account, and sending notifications to a parent when ChatGPT flags the teen to be “in a moment of acute distress.” The blog post came after a lawsuit by the family of Adam Raine, a teen who died by suicide after months of talking with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT spent “months coaching him toward suicide,” Matthew Raine, the father of the late Adam Raine, said on Tuesday during the hearing. He added, “As parents, you cannot imagine what it’s like to read a conversation with a chatbot that groomed your child to take his own life. What began as a homework helper gradually turned itself into a confidant and then a suicide coach.”

During the teen’s conversations with ChatGPT, Raine said that the chatbot mentioned suicide 1,275 times. Raine then addressed Altman directly, asking him to pull GPT-4o from the market until, or unless, the company can guarantee it’s safe. “On the very day that Adam died, Sam Altman … made their philosophy crystal-clear in a public talk,” Raine said, adding that Altman said the company should “‘deploy AI systems to the world and get feedback while the stakes are relatively low.’”

Three in four teens are using AI companions currently, per national polling by Common Sense Media, Robbie Torney, the firm’s senior director of AI programs, said during the hearing. He specifically mentioned Character AI and Meta.

“This is a public health crisis,” one mother, appearing under the name Jane Doe, said during her testimony about her child’s experience with Character AI. “This is a mental health war, and I really feel like we are losing.”

Meta to take ‘extra precautions’ to stop AI chatbots talking to kids about suicide, which makes you wonder what it’s been doing until now

by admin September 1, 2025

Content warning: This article includes discussion of suicide. If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, help is available from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (US), Crisis Services Canada (CA), Samaritans (UK), Lifeline (AUS), and other hotlines.

Facebook parent company Meta has said it will introduce extra safety features to its AI LLMs, shortly after a leaked document prompted a US senator to launch an investigation into the company.

The internal Meta document, obtained by Reuters, is reportedly titled “GenAI: Content Risk Standards” and, among other things, showed that the company’s AIs were permitted to have “sensual” conversations with children.

Republican Senator Josh Hawley called it “reprehensible and outrageous” and has launched an official probe into Meta’s AI policies. For its part, Meta told the BBC that “the examples and notes in question were and are erroneous and inconsistent with our policies, and have been removed.”

Now Meta says it will introduce more safeguards to its AI bots, which includes blocking them from talking to teen users about topics such as suicide, self-harm and eating disorders. Which raises an obvious question: what the hell have they been doing up to now? And is it still fine for Meta’s AI to discuss such things with adults?

“As we continue to refine our systems, we’re adding more guardrails as an extra precaution—including training our AIs not to engage with teens on these topics, but to guide them to expert resources, and limiting teen access to a select group of AI characters for now,” Meta spokesperson Stephanie Otway told TechCrunch.

The reference to AI characters is because Meta allows user-made characters, which are built atop its LLMs, across platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. Needless to say, certain of these bots are highly questionable, and another Reuters report found countless examples of sexualised celebrity bots, including one based on a 16 year-old film star, and that a Meta employee had created various AI Taylor Swift ‘parody’ accounts. Whether Meta can stem the tide remains to be seen, but Otway insists that teen users will no longer be able to access such chatbots.

“While further safety measures are welcome, robust safety testing should take place before products are put on the market—not retrospectively when harm has taken place,” Andy Burrows, head of suicide prevention charity the Molly Rose Foundation, told the BBC.

“Meta must act quickly and decisively to implement stronger safety measures for AI chatbots and [UK regulator] Ofcom should stand ready to investigate if these updates fail to keep children safe.”

The news comes shortly after a California couple sued ChatGPT-maker OpenAI over the suicide of their teenage son, alleging the chatbot encouraged him to take his own life.

Google’s Gemini Live AI assistant will show you what it’s talking about

by admin August 21, 2025

Google is bringing a bundle of new features to Gemini Live, its AI assistant that you can have real-time conversations with. Next week, Gemini Live will be able to highlight things directly on your screen while sharing your camera, making it easier for the AI assistant to point out a specific item.

If you’re trying to find the right tool for a project, for example, you can point your smartphone’s camera at a collection of tools, and Gemini Live will highlight the correct one on your screen. This feature will be available on the newly announced Pixel 10 devices when they launch on August 28th. Google will begin rolling out visual guidance to other Android devices at the same time before expanding to iOS “in the coming weeks.”

Google is also launching new integrations that will soon allow Gemini Live to interact with more apps, including Messages, Phone, and Clock. Say you’re in the middle of a conversation with Gemini about directions to your destination, but you realize you’re running late. Google says you’ll be able to interrupt the chatbot with something like: “This route looks good. Now, send a message to Alex that I’m running about 10 minutes late.” From there, Google can draft a text to your friend for you.

Lastly, Google is launching an updated audio model for Gemini Live that the company says will “dramatically improve” how the chatbot “uses the key elements of human speech, like intonation, rhythm and pitch.” Soon, Gemini will change its tone based on what you’re speaking about, such as using a calmer voice if you’re asking about a stressful topic.

You’ll also be able to change how fast — or slow — Gemini talks, which sounds a bit similar to how users can now tweak the style of ChatGPT’s voice mode. And, if you ask Gemini for a dramatic retelling of a story from the perspective of a particular character or historical figure, the chatbot may adopt an accent for a “rich, engaging narrative.”
