Hue takes on cheaper rivals with the entry-level Essential smart bulb lineup

by admin September 4, 2025

Hue just did its biggest product launch ever as part of IFA 2025 and a key product is the new entry-level Essential smart bulb lineup. Though still not as cheap as some products you can find on Amazon, it’s designed to take on budget rivals like Govee and Aqara with bulbs starting under $20.

The new range includes A19 bulbs, GU10 spots and strip lights with and without color options. Effectively, you’re not losing a lot compared to the regular color/white bulbs. They still run on the same platform and offer Bluetooth out of the box along with extra features enabled when using a bridge or Matter-over-Thread.

To highlight the differences, Hue released a feature comparison sheet. You can’t dim the Essential bulbs as much, they offer a reduced range of whites (2200 to 6500K compared to 1000 to 20000K) and color quality is less accurate. The latter is arguably the most important feature for folks who use smart bulbs to sync with their TVs or require precise matching between bulbs.

You’ll be able to buy the Hue Essential bulbs starting this month, with the new A19 bulbs priced at $25 individually or $60 in a four-pack. The Essential strip light arrives in December for $60 in a 5 meter length (16 feet) or $100 for 10 meters (33 feet). You can also grab the A19 bulb in a starter kit in the US starting at $80 for the Essential E27 2 pieces and Hue Bridge V2, up to $100 for the Essential E27 4 pieces and Hue Bridge V2.

Another primary piece of Hue’s smart lighting puzzle is the Hue Bridge Pro. It has a more serious black look compared to the white models of the past to signify the extra power. That includes five times the processing performance and 15 times the memory of the Hue Bridge V2 that came out 10 years ago.

Along with the extra power, the Huge Bridge Pro debuts a new feature called Hue Motion Aware. That transforms Hue Bulbs (including 95 percent of existing models) into motion sensors able to detect movement and trigger actions or security alerts.

Hue says you can easily upgrade a current Hue Bridge “with just a few clicks,” and Signify will release support for combining multiple Bridges into a single Bridge Pro by year’s end. The Bridge pro arrives in North America in September 2025 for $90.

Hue also refreshed its strip lighting with several new products including the flagship OmniGlow (starting at $140 for a 3 meter length and arriving in November), the first Hue strip with no visible hotspots via CSP tech to accent your decor with a seamless glow. It also introduced the Flux lineup with indoor, outdoor, ultra-bright and neon options (in sizes up to 10m) starting at $70 for 3 meters, for applications ranging from indoor accents to outdoor facades. Also new are the Festavia string lights that can be used for holiday decor or year round in a permanent model for rooflines, patios and balconies. Those start at $160 for 7m lengths or $120 for 9 meters for the permanent model with availability in September.

Signify also introduced a new A19 bulb that can replicate the entire spectrum of daylight while offering 40 percent great efficiency compared to its predecessor. Finally, the company announced a Sonos partnership that will allow you to operates Philips Hue lights using voice controls, and eventually “integrate light and sound in new intuitive ways.”

Automated Sextortion Spyware Takes Webcam Pics of Victims Watching Porn

by admin September 3, 2025

Sextortion-based hacking, which hijacks a victim’s webcam or blackmails them with nudes they’re tricked or coerced into sharing, has long represented one of the most disturbing forms of cybercrime. Now one specimen of widely available spyware has turned that relatively manual crime into an automated feature, detecting when the user is browsing pornography on their PC, screenshotting it, and taking a candid photo of the victim through their webcam.

On Wednesday, researchers at security firm Proofpoint published their analysis of an open-source variant of “infostealer” malware known as Stealerium that the company has seen used in multiple cybercriminal campaigns since May of this year. The malware, like all infostealers, is designed to infect a target’s computer and automatically send a hacker a wide variety of stolen sensitive data, including banking information, usernames and passwords, and keys to victims’ crypto wallets. Stealerium, however, adds another, more humiliating form of espionage: It also monitors the victim’s browser for web addresses that include certain NSFW keywords, screenshots browser tabs that include those words, photographs the victim via their webcam while they’re watching those porn pages, and sends all the images to a hacker—who can then blackmail the victim with the threat of releasing them.

“When it comes to infostealers, they typically are looking for whatever they can grab,” says Selena Larson, one of the Proofpoint researchers who worked on the company’s analysis. “This adds another layer of privacy invasion and sensitive information that you definitely wouldn’t want in the hands of a particular hacker.”

“It’s gross,” Larson adds. “I hate it.”

Proofpoint dug into the features of Stealerium after finding the malware in tens of thousands of emails sent by two different hacker groups it tracks (both relatively small-scale cybercriminal operations), as well as a number of other email-based hacking campaigns. Stealerium, strangely, is distributed as a free, open source tool available on Github. The malware’s developer, who goes by the named witchfindertr and describes themselves as a “malware analyst” based in London, notes on the page that the program is for “educational purposes only.”

“How you use this program is your responsibility,” the page reads. “I will not be held accountable for any illegal activities. Nor do i give a shit how u use it.”

In the hacking campaigns Proofpoint analyzed, cybercriminals attempted to trick users into downloading and installing Stealerium as an attachment or a web link, luring victims with typical bait like a fake payment or invoice. The emails targeted victims inside companies in the hospitality industry, as well as in education and finance, though Proofpoint notes that users outside of companies were also likely targeted but wouldn’t be seen by its monitoring tools.

Once it’s installed, Stealerium is designed to steal a wide variety of data and send it to the hacker via services like Telegram, Discord, or the SMTP protocol in some variants of the spyware, all of which is relatively standard in infostealers. The researchers were more surprised to see the automated sextortion feature, which monitors browser URLs a list of pornography-related terms such as “sex” and “porn,” which can be customized by the hacker and trigger simultaneous image captures from the user’s webcam and browser. Proofpoint notes that it hasn’t identified any specific victims of that sextortion function, but the existence of the feature suggests it was likely used.

Want a French-made RPG that takes inspiration from Japanese RPGs and was actually made by a team of 30? Edge of Memories should scratch that itch

by admin September 2, 2025

We’re all still recovering from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 fever, right? Whilst the dev has revealed there’s more set in the world of Maelle and pals to come, I can only imagine I speak for a fair few of us when I say: I want more French-made role-playing game goodness. To that end, I booked in some time at Gamescom 2025 to play something that may not be on your radar – a follow-up to 2021’s underrated Edge of Eternity curio, Edge of Eternity.

Now, if you just want more of the same turn-based catnip present in Sandfall Interactive’s emotional tour de force, I’m sorry to disappoint you: Edge of Eternity is more action-RPG than anything else. In a 30-minute demo at Gamescom, it felt more like a mix-up between Devil May Cry and Xenoblade Chronicles than the Final Fantasy X-aligned turn-based system we saw in Expedition 33. But that’s no bad thing: the modern take on old Japanese role-playing game tropes, all realised through a jaunty French lens, is more than worthy of at least a sliver of your attention.

Let’s start with the pedigree: though the core team making this peculiar sequel is mostly French, there is some serious, well-established talent propping up the plucky young studio. Whether you’re looking at Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda (with NieR lyricist Emi Evans), Xenoblade Chronicles character designer Raita Kazama, orFinal Fantasy XV combat designer Mitsuru Yokoyama, there is storied talent everywhere you look in the game, and the collective work of these veteran devs actually melds really comfortably into a gorgeous, watercolour double-A title that is as refreshing as it is off-beat.

The game is set in the same world as the previous game, named Heyron, where a malignant presence called ‘the Corrosion’ has either killed or transformed the denizens of the planet into “misshapen abominations.” In just 30 minutes, I was privy to some cutscenes that reminded me of the darker moments in, say, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood – all family trauma, death, and hopelessness – that set a contrasting tone to the bright, airy world of Heyron.

From what I can gather, the world is standard RPG fare (this isn’t a bad thing: sometimes, you can feel very at home in a trope, especially in this genre). You play as Eline, aided by Ysoris and Kanta in your party, as you set out on a quest to cure the Corrosion-afflicted continent of Avaris from its unnatural plague. You control Eline for the most part, but quick commands can be thrown out to your erstwhile companions so that they can modify your attacks and generate combos with you (I can see the influence of Final Fantasy XV, here, for sure).

Their bark is worse than their bite. | Image credit: Midgar Studio

There are elements (fire, ice, and thunder) and related abilities, of course, that allow Ysoris and Kanta to stack effects up on enemies, letting Eline swoop in with berserker rage and pile on the DPS. That Devil May Cry reference comes back with a vengeance here, because as Eline dishes out the hurt, she can charge up what we’d know as a ‘Devil Trigger’ and start to tap into the power of ‘the Corrosion’ in order to dispatch foes with prejudice.

The demo ended with a boss fight against some sort of malignant mass that was heaving with body horror limbs, claws, and all manner of grizzly bolt-ons. Timing commands to the support characters whilst hopping, attacking, and dodging – it felt great. There are times when you can tell the game is developed by a small team of about 30 (the world is quite sparse, and the zones you’re corralled through are simple in their layout), but when the combat is firing on all cylinders… well, I can see myself slurping this one up greedily.

If I’m being completely honest, the game has a PS3/360-era feel to it. But I’m not saying that as a pejorative: some of my best non-mainstream RPG experiences came from bizarre RPG efforts in the seventh generation of consoles. Titles like The Last Remnant, Eternal Sonata and Infinite Undiscovery became totems of the mid-2000s era for me, with the likes of Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia representing the ‘high tide’ of the era.

Here’s a proper look at the game’s comabt.Watch on YouTube

I came away from my time with Edge of Memories thinking about those misspent months of my life (laughing with pals at Gamescom about the appalling ‘dinner dance’ in Infinite Undiscovery, especially). I think your mileage with Edge of Memories will vary drastically depending on how sugary your soft spot for that aggressively mid-era of role-playing games is, but I honestly found this game juicing on the nostalgia glands for a period of gaming history I didn’t realise I missed so much.

The game, coming to PS5 and Xbox Series and PC, is currently listed for a 2026 release, and carrying a £31.99 price tag. I think that’s the sweet spot; you’re not going to get a full, premium experience out of this, but at the right price point, it’s definitely going to be more than just a forgettable romp. I’ll be checking out the full release next year.

The MCU/Avengers: Doomsday

At her recent appearance at Dragon Con (via Cosmic Marvel), Chloe Bennett confirmed Agents of SHEILD still “isn’t considered canon” to the MCU, adding that Secret Invasion “would’ve been better” had that not been the case.

I’m not playing a bit, this isn’t a joke, I don’t know anything. They haven’t asked me. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. isn’t considered canon, [but] I agree that I should’ve been in Secret Invasion. It probably would’ve been better.

Meanwhile, Yahoo! Entertainment notes that insiders Daniel Richtman and My Time To Shine Hello appear to have corroborated that Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter “have children” in Avengers: Doomsday. The outlet writes that Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell “are apparently shooting on the set of Steve and Peggy’s house from the end of Avengers: Endgame,” and that Tom Hiddleston also “filmed a scene” at the location in which “he has a conversation with them.” As per the reports, “when Steve went back in time to go live with Peggy, he created the Incursions so now Doom wants him dead.”

'Spinning Bottom' Hints at Recovery Rally as BTC Takes Out Descending Trendline

‘Spinning Bottom’ Hints at Recovery Rally as BTC Takes Out Descending Trendline

by admin September 2, 2025

This is a daily analysis by CoinDesk analyst and Chartered Market Technician Omkar Godbole.

XRP: Prints spinning bottom

XRP XRP$2.8156 chalked out a “spinning bottom” candlestick pattern on Monday, which occurs when prices swing back and forth in a broad range, but end the day near the opening price. The shadows representing the intraday high and low indicate that both buyers and sellers were active, but neither side could gain a dominant position.

When the pattern appears after a notable price drop and at key support, as in XRP’s case, it signals that the selling pressure may be waning and buyers are stepping in to defend the price.

As seen on the daily chart, XRP’s spinning bottom has appeared following a 25% pullback from the July peak of $3.65 and at a key support level near the August 3 low, a point where the market previously rebounded sharply.

XRP’s daily chart. (TradingView/CoinDesk)

XRP’s spinning bottom does not guarantee an immediate bullish move, but it acts as an early warning of a potential bullish trend reversal. Technical analysts and traders typically look for confirmation from subsequent price action—such as a bullish candle closing above the spinning bottom’s high.

In other words, focus is on Monday’s high of $2.84, with XRP currently changing hands at $2.80.

Not out of the woods yet

The 5- and 10-day simple moving averages, widely used to filter out short-term market noise, continue to trend downward, signaling ongoing bearish momentum. Additionally, the Guppy multiple moving average band has recently turned bearish, with the bearish signal remaining intact as of now.

In other words, momentum remains tilted in favor of sellers, and, if Monday’s low of $2.69 is breached, XRP could experience a sharper decline

Bullish undercurrents?

The MACD histogram, an indicator gauging momentum using 12- and 26-week exponential moving averages, has been consistently negative since late July. Still, XRP’s price has not experienced a steep downtrend, essentially trading between $2.70 and $3.00.

XRP’s daily price action versus MACD. (TradingView/CoinDesk)

The relative resilience of prices means a potential bullish crossover of the MACD could mark the onset of a sharp rally. The BTC market displayed a similar dynamic in September last year when it traded below $60,000.

  • Support: $2.69 (Monday’s low), $2.65 (the swing high from May), $2.48 (the 200-day SMA)
  • Resistance: $2.84 (Monday’s high), $3.38 (the August high), $3.65 (the July high).

Bitcoin takes out key trendline

BTC has surged past a descending trendline that marked the pullback from record highs above $124,000. However, the immediate outlook remains bearish as prices stay below key resistance levels, including the Ichimoku cloud, the 50- and 100-day simple moving averages, and the August 3 low. Additionally, a bearish divergence is evident in the RSI on the monthly chart.

BTC’s daily and hourly charts. (TradingView/CoinDesk)

Taken together, these signals paint a bleak picture of the market, where upward moves could encounter selling pressure. A clear negation of this bearish outlook would require BTC to successfully break and hold above the Ichimoku cloud, which currently acts as a critical resistance zone.

  • Support: $107,286 (Monday’s low), $100,000, $98,330 (the swing low from June 22).
  • Resistance: $110,756 (the Ichimoku cloud), $111,728 (the 100-day SMA), $115,780 (the 50-day SMA).

AI takes over money management: but will it work?

AI takes over money management: but will it work?

by admin September 1, 2025

AI is everywhere. It’s even shaping our culture. A recent New Yorker article critically examined this phenomenon, stating that artificial intelligence could serve as our own personal Scheherazade, feeding stories about ourselves and each other. This, they believe, will pull us into alternate realities and away from the one we collectively share.

While the article portrays a skeptical and fearful outlook on AI’s influence on human culture, there is one area where AI is undoubtedly useful and welcome: finance.

Money management today, especially with the numerous apps out there, is exhausting at best and dangerous at worst. Because of the fragmented systems users are forced to endure, they often deal with failed transfers between accounts, unexpected fees, and payments stuck in limbo.

Managing crypto is just as, if not more, messy. With wallets, bridges, gas fees, and networks that don’t communicate with each other, even expert users are left confused.

But AI can offer real, lasting solutions to these problems.

AI in finance

AI in money management is an emerging and fast-growing sector. Earlier this year, we saw Kata.ai, one of Indonesia’s most prominent AI innovators, blend advanced natural language processing, voice recognition, and AI-driven automation in banking. Kata.ai’s solutions range from chatbots to voice assistants and digital avatars, all designed to enhance customer experience and operational efficiency in financial services.

However, the transformative solution that shines above the rest is HAIA. HAIA might seem like a regular run-of-the-mill OS at first glance, but this is no ordinary app. HAIA is the first AI-driven financial assistant that connects web2 and web3 money. It’s a financial assistant that understands what users are trying to do and helps anyone get there with fewer steps, fewer errors, and far less stress.

But prospective users want to know: What does HAIA offer and how well does it work?

How does HAIA work?

According to the team behind HAIA, the Haust Network, users won’t need to search for the right protocol or wallet once they start utilizing HAIA’s capabilities. All they need to do is communicate with this AI assistant and tell it what they need. HAIA takes care of the rest.

Let’s say users want to send $1,000 to friends in another country. However, they don’t want to spend their well-earned weekend Googling about stablecoins, bridging fees, or whether their wallet supports a certain network. All they want is for the money to be transferred. Through HAIA, a user just has to say “send my friend Bob $1,000 of USDC with the lowest fees possible,” and HAIA does the rest.

Another use case is yield. Users want to earn yield on idle USDC. But they don’t want to chase APYs through farming dashboards or waste time calculating gas costs across chains. They just want their cash safely put to work. And HAIA does this job well.

Yet another one of HAIA’s standout features is that it lets users grant the agent temporary permissions to perform specific actions with specific amounts, without handing over private keys. It can execute anything from a simple command such as “Sell SOL when it reaches $500” to “Swap SOL for XRP at $500 with a maximum 1% slippage, then deposit $300 worth of XRP in the highest-yield contract for 2 months, and send the rest to a stablecoin wallet.”

HAIA and Haust Network’s role in the future of finance

The team behind the inventive HAIA is the visionary Haust Network. HAIA is the assistant layer for the Haust wallet, which itself can connect to other wallets and banks. With Haust’s links to over 6,000 banks worldwide, users can tie in their existing accounts or even open new ones as the network expands.

Built this way, Haust becomes the payment layer for an emerging agentic web, with HAIA acting as the intelligent interface that makes both traditional finance and web3 feel like one system.

It remains to be seen whether HAIA and the Haust Network can achieve their ambitions of transforming the future of finance, but for now, they are helping digital nomads adapt, giving DeFi users an edge, and offering everyone else a clearer way to manage their money.

Overwatch 2 takes action against 23,000 cheats, bringing total of banned accounts to over 1m players

by admin August 31, 2025

Overwatch 2 has “enacted” over 23,000 “actions” against cheaters after rolling out a new system to find and detect players who use mouse and keyboard in console lobbies, a practice known as ximming.

While “enacted” doesn’t necessarily mean all 23,000 accounts were banned outright, Blizzard says that brings the overall total of banned accounts to over 1m players.

Wuyang | New Hero Gameplay Trailer | Overwatch 2.Watch on YouTube

“The new Mouse and Keyboard support will impact how we action users who previously used unapproved third-party peripherals to gain an advantage over players in the Controller Pool,” Blizzard explained in a new blog post. “Bypassing the set restrictions in that pool with unapproved peripherals will be considered cheating and actions will be taken on your account.

“Previously, we deployed technology to help find and detect players who were using those peripherals on consoles. We enacted over 23,000 actions against players since that deployment. This included players who were directly using unapproved peripherals as well as players who grouped up with them to benefit from that unfair advantage.”

Blizzard then admitted that it had to “adapt to new workarounds” but was now ready to “take more aggressive actions against those who try to circumvent the competitive integrity of our console players.”

“We’ve rolled out new tech for Season 18 that should help us spot players that use unapproved peripherals faster and with more reliability,” the post added. “We’re also laying down harsher consequences on users of unapproved peripherals, since the legitimate opportunity to compete using Mouse and Keyboard on an even playing field is now available, regardless of whether you own a PC or console.”

Previously, the team would “warn and restrict” any offenders and send them to the PC Pool, especially for cheats playing at Competitive levels above Diamond.

Now, however, “continuing to use unapproved peripherals and devices in the Controller Pool will result in a full game account ban regardless of the player’s rank or mode”.

The recent action has resulted in over one million accounts being banned from playing Overwatch 2. This includes players who used aimbots, wallhacks, and other cheats, as well as those who grouped up with known cheaters.

“While the effort to stop cheaters and the cheats they use is an ongoing effort, we want to reiterate our commitment to ensuring the outcome of every Overwatch match is determined by skill and passion, and not through unfair advantages,” Blizzard added.

Aside from the Stadium update, Overwatch 2 Season 18 introduced significant changes, including heroes Wuyang, Pharah, Winston, and Brigitte, plus the Route 66 and London maps, new game modes, new All-Star rewards, Endorsements, and more.

Ohtani takes big leap, earns first win of season for Dodgers

by admin August 28, 2025

ESPN baseball reporter. Covered the L.A. Rams for ESPN from 2016 to 2018 and the L.A. Angels for MLB.com from 2012 to 2016.

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani’s 87th pitch on Wednesday, a slider, induced a harmless groundout that also triggered a milestone. With it, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ two-way superstar completed five innings for the first time since coming back from a second repair of his ulnar collateral ligament, a sign that his prolonged pitching rehab had finally reached its conclusion.

Ohtani, though, had no time to appreciate the moment — it was his turn to hit.

Rather than make the rounds along the third-base dugout and take a rest on the bench, Ohtani hurriedly donned a batting helmet, strapped on some elbow and shin guards, grabbed his bat and readied himself to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning. By that point, he had already done most of the heavy lifting — by igniting a four-run rally, by holding the visiting Cincinnati Reds to one run and by setting the tone in his first Dodger win of the season.

“I’m excited for Shohei,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after a 5-1, sweep-clinching victory. “You know, he was one hitter away from not getting a chance to get a win because of the pitch count, so I think it was good for him to get that win.”

For now, at least, the Dodgers are essentially treating five innings — and thus, somewhere in the neighborhood of 90 pitches — as Ohtani’s limit this season. Ohtani called reaching that threshold “really key in terms of moving forward,” but the way he got there was just as important.

After back-to-back starts in which he allowed a combined nine runs in 8⅓ innings against the last-place Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Angels, Ohtani relied heavily on his breaking pitches while limiting the Reds to one run — on a solo homer by Noelvi Marte — and striking out a season-high nine batters. Ohtani had not thrown a single curveball until his eighth start of the season, on Aug. 6, then flashed only 11 of them over a stretch of three outings. On Wednesday, Ohtani uncorked 17 of them, four of which resulted in strikeouts.

After relying heavily on his four-seam fastball and sweeper early in his return, Ohtani was suddenly leaning on what might amount to his fifth-best pitch, a key in his quest to consistently pitch deep into games.

“We’d had a plan of kind of living away from the fastball as much as we had in the past couple starts,” Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing said. “That doesn’t mean we weren’t going to throw it tonight, but we were very off-speed-heavy early on. That just opened up doors later with the fastball for the last two innings.”

Early in his return, Ohtani explained, the goal was to make sure his fastball velocity was where it needed to be. The sweeper functioned as an effective secondary weapon, helping him navigate shorter outings. Those two accounted for 81% of the pitches Ohtani threw when he faced the Reds in Cincinnati on July 30, a start that was interrupted by leg cramps. About a month later, Ohtani threw only 35% sweepers and fastballs. The other 65% was absorbed by splitters, sinkers, cutters, sliders and, mostly, curveballs.

“I think the great thing about Shohei is he can command, when he’s right, four or five pitches,” Roberts said. “When you’re trying to go through a lineup three times, you’ve got to at times be able to go to different pitches and sequences. To continue to build him up and give us options if we want to get a little bit more length out of him is certainly helpful, but this was a good marker, to get to 90 pitches through five innings.”

Ohtani threw seven different pitches in a scoreless first inning, ranging from 76 to 99 mph. He issued two walks and threw two wild pitches in the second, but got out of the inning unscathed by striking out Ke’Bryan Hayes on a 100 mph fastball and Matt McLain on an 89 mph sweeper. After Marte’s homer in the top of the third — on a first-pitch cutter down the middle — Ohtani retired eight consecutive batters to finish his outing.

In the middle of that, he led off the bottom of the fourth with a line drive single, accounting for the first baserunner allowed by Reds left-hander Nick Lodolo. Teoscar Hernandez, Andy Pages, Enrique Hernandez and Rushing, who came through after the Reds intentionally walked Miguel Rojas ahead of him, contributed their own singles, giving the Dodgers a lead they would not relinquish.

The Dodgers went on to win their fourth straight game, giving themselves a two-game lead on the San Diego Padres in the National League West, and seem to be trending upward. Their bullpen, ravaged by injury for most of the year, is finally starting to round back into form. Their offense will get two key pieces back in Max Muncy and Tommy Edman in the near future. And their rotation — consisting of Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, Clayton Kershaw, Emmet Sheehan and Ohtani — looks especially formidable.

“Just looking at our roster, I really like where we’re at in terms of our starting pitchers and bullpen,” Ohtani said through an interpreter. “I just want to make sure that I do my part as a starting pitcher to go deeper into games and help out the bullpen.”

15 years later, Scott Pilgrim EX proves that Toronto’s most problematic bass player has what it takes to become beat-em-up royalty in 2025

You know why a bass line is important in a good rock song, right? It’s the whole foundation, the beating heart of the music that underpins everything else the song has to offer. That slick riff that comes in before the chorus wouldn’t land as well without some nice syncopated bass notes to make it soar. The drum fills wouldn’t feel as at home in the transitions without the bass to glue them to the rest of the beat. Even vocal melodies, when orchestrated properly, are elevated by a nice, recognisable and reliable bass line.

Yes, that may be a clunky metaphor, but go with me on this. That’s what the combat is in Scott Pilgrim EX. The original beat-em-up from 2010 – that’s the clumsily-titled Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game – had an absolute solid foundation that, sometimes, was weighed down by everything else. To continue the bass analogy, it was like listening to Primus: one of the best bass players in the world surrounded by musicians that are perfectly fine, but nowhere near the level of Les Claypool.

So, in Scott Pilgrim EX, Tribute Games has set to work correcting that imbalance. Now, it feels like all the other stuff that kept the original game at ‘Battle of the Bands’ level, rather than ‘sold out amphitheatre shows’ level, is being refined. I only played a 30-minute demo at Gamescom, but it’s like listening to the lead single off a band’s comeback album: it sets the scene, gives a sense of what’s to come, paints the sonic landscape for you, and gets you hyped.

The combat – that bass line – is as driven and insistent as ever. It’s smooth, buttery, and compelling. I wanted to keep playing. High praise during a packed Gamescom show where my next appointment was Silent Hill f. To give me a true sense of how it should be played, two devs joined me in my session, and the frantic melee on-screen as we hopped around the beaches (!?) and boardwalks of Toronto remained as itchy as ever.

In fact, it’s better than the first game. The devs and I chatted as we played, and many of the original game’s talent has returned for this one, brining new inspirations with them. Streets of Rage 4 and River City Girls were named-checked. Fights are more fluid, and given I’d never met the people I was playing with before, I was thrilled to see impressive multi-enemy juggle combos connect frequently: playing as one of two new playable characters (Roxie Richter), I juggled enemies right into the hands of Lucas Lee, who would keep them airborne for a brief thrashing until main man himself Scott unleashed a special move to finish them off. Pump it into my veins.

Lucas Lee and Roxie Richter join the fray.

In true side-scroller fashion, the various environs are littered with intractable elements: skateboards to dash in on, volleyballs you could charge and throw to ricochet violently between the fretting goons on-stage, dropped weapons you could wail on vegans with until they broke. It’s all there, and as intuitive and delicious as any of its genre rivals. I actually think I enjoy the fantasy violence on show here more than I have in recent stablemates like Battletoads (2020) or Streets of Rage 4. But that could be because of the killer pixel art or the face-meltingly good music from Anamanaguchi.

I didn’t see enough of the game to know whether it addresses complaints about pacing that hamstrung the first title. Nor did I get enough time with it to see whether the power curve is a bit more generous. But in the slice I did play, sneezing out hadokens and whipping enemies into the air with Roxie’s sword felt powerful. More enemies with less life makes everything feel hyperactive (positive), and when bosses do appear you have to figure out their gimmicks and respond with brains and brawn to succeed. It takes the themes of the source material and applies it mechanically to the game. Delicious.

It’s funny, too. Scott has grown up in the 15 years since the first game, and even some of the more… regrettable… themes in the original material have been massaged here to be a bit more palatable. Scott doesn’t come off as (as much of a) privileged chauvinist in this game. That he can team up with Ramona’s exes, this time, shows personal growth: a willingness to let things slide, and forgo his ego in favour of the greater good. Good work, Scott.

If nothing else, listen to the music.Watch on YouTube

I think, maybe, that’s the driving narrative here: Scott may be trapped in a microcosm of Millennial angst – which is now as nostalgic for Gen Z is as the 80s was for me, terrifyingly – but that doesn’t mean he can’t grow and change. As his character learns to adapt, so to do the developers. This is a beat-em-up as relevant and adapted for 2025 as the original game was to 2010.

The genre has been through something of a renaissance over the past 15 years, and it’s clear that the assembled supergroup of Tribute Games has been keeping a keen eye on what players expect from a modern attempt. The result is something I can’t wait to play more of, a sharp, acerbic action game packed to the gills with pop culture references old and new. But is that a surprise, really, coming from the team that made Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge?

“Hey, those green shells look familiar,” I joke as I skid a green turtle-like shell into a demon wailing on Lucas Lee. Even the spinning animation of it looks like something straight out of a 90s Mario game. “Haha, yeah,” jokes one of my dev teammates. “Just don’t tell those guys, yeah?” he winks, nodding over to the Nintendo booth across the Gamescom hall. We laugh. On-screen, a boss finally falls to the hands of a charged bomb blast that wipes out the huddled enemy masses.

Man, I think to myself, I can’t wait to do this at home.

Scott Pilgrim EX is scheduled to be released in early 2026 for PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
