Monthly perp trading surpass $1t for the first time

by admin October 2, 2025

In September, monthly trading volume on Perp DEXs broke through $1 trillion for the first time in history, reaching as high as $1.14 trillion amidst the boom in perp trading.

Summary

  • In September 2025, monthly trading volume on Perp DEXs surpassed $1 trillion, marking a historic first for the crypto community.
  • DEX trading has been on the rise lately, with more CEXs adopting DEX functionalities

According to data from DeFi Llama, trading volume for perpetual decentralized exchanges exceeded $1 trillion in monthly trading volume for the first time ever in September 2025. Compared to the previous month of August, this number indicates a nearly 50% month-over-month surge from just $766 billion.

The surge in monthly trading volume was driven by several decentralized protocols, such as Aster (ASTER), Hyperliquid (HYPE), and Lighter each crossing the $150 billion mark in trading volume over the past 30 days. In the past week alone, perp trading has climbed up by 161%.

Aster leads the charge with a monthly perp volume of $493.61 billion, making up for nearly half of the total perp trading volume in September alone. This number is followed by Hyperliquid with $280.7 billion in the same period. Lighter is in third place with $165 billion in monthly trading volume.

Within just a month, Aster managed to dethrone Hyperliquid as the dominating market holder of perpetual futures. What took Hyperliquid one year to achieve, Aster was able to do in just a few months. Back in August 2025, analysts estimated that Hyperliquid accounted for 80% of the total perp trading market.

In the past 24 hours, Aster’s perp volume has reached $80.47 billion. Meanwhile, Hyperliquid’s volume is only at $9.47 billion. The large nealy-1000% gap between protocols showcases the rapid growth of Aster DEX in the crypto space after gaining support from former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao.

Perp trading on the rise

Compared to just a year ago in September 2024, the trading volume for perpetual futures was still stuck at around $131 billion. In just the span of a year, that number surpassed $1 trillion for the first time in history due to advancements made in the space.

The boom in perpetual trading can be attributed to the many new features introduced through Aster, Hyperliquid and many more DEX platforms. Many Perp DEXs run on high-throughput chains or Layer-2 solutions, reducing latency, lowering gas fees, and enhancing execution speed.

As a result, barriers that once made derivatives trading unattractive on-chain have been diminished.

Another key driver is the rewards model deployed by DEXs to attract more users to trade on their platforms. Most recently, more protocols are using token incentives, yield sharing, revenue redistributions, and “point-farming” schemes to bootstrap volume and liquidity on their respective platforms.

Projects like Aster have leaned heavily on this kind of incentive engineering to rapidly grow trading activity and attract users.

Not only that, centralized exchanges like OKX have begun to integrate support for DEX trading, in hopes of luring in more users with a hybrid model that combines CEX and DEX functionalities. At the moment, the program is still in its limited public beta test phase.

According to the announcement, the exchange plans to distribute 1,000 experience codes worldwide, giving users the chance to test the DEX support feature with zero trading fees. Transactions will be executed directly within the interface of the OKX exchange.

Metaplanet’s Bitcoin holdings surpass 30,000 BTC, now fourth-largest corporate holder

by admin October 1, 2025

Metaplanet is cementing its position as one of the most aggressive corporate adopters of Bitcoin, steadily expanding its treasury strategy.

Summary

  • Metaplanet confirmed the acquisition of 5,268 BTC on Oct. 1, worth $615.7 million at an average price of $116,870 per coin.
  • Its total Bitcoin holdings now stand at 30,823 BTC, acquired at a cumulative cost of $3.33 billion.
  • The firm now ranks fourth among corporate Bitcoin holders worldwide, while remaining the largest listed holder in Asia.
  • Metaplanet recently expanded operations with new subsidiaries in the U.S. and Japan.

Metaplanet’s Bitcoin holdings have officially reached the 30,000 BTC milestone. The Tokyo-listed firm confirmed the acquisition of 5,268 BTC on October 1, worth about $615.7 million at an average price of $116,870 per coin.

With this purchase, Metaplanet’s total holdings now stand at 30,823 BTC (BTC), acquired at a cumulative cost of $3.33 billion, about $107,912 per bitcoin. The company also reported a 497.1% year-to-date yield in 2025, reflecting the strength of its accumulation strategy, particularly after Bitcoin’s strong rally a few months ago.

— Simon Gerovich (@gerovich) October 1, 2025

According to data compiled by crypto.news, the current holdings place the Japanese Bitcoin treasury firm fourth among the largest corporate Bitcoin holders. It also remains the largest holder among listed companies in Asia.

Metaplanet’s accumulation through the year has been funded mainly via international share offerings and reinvested revenue. The firm also recently secured additional capital through an overseas share offering to channel fresh funds directly into Bitcoin purchases, suggesting that further acquisitions may soon follow.

Alongside building one of the largest corporate Bitcoin treasuries, the company has also begun broadening its business structure.

Metaplanet advances Bitcoin treasury strategy with business expansion

In September, Metaplanet announced the establishment of two subsidiaries in the United States and Japan, marking the first major expansion of its business since adopting its BTC-focused treasury strategy in 2024.

The company said the U.S. subsidiary will handle income generation through derivatives trading and related services, while the Japan-based unit will focus on media, events, and other Bitcoin-related services. CEO Simon Gerovich has regularly indicated that the company’s dual-phase strategy is driven by the belief in Bitcoin as a strategic hedge and growth engine, emphasizing the long-term bet on the asset.

With its 30,000 BTC milestone, Metaplanet has now achieved its year-end target set earlier in May. It remains to be seen whether the company can maintain its current pace of accumulation to meet its longer-term goals of 100,000 BTC by 2026 and 210,000 BTC by 2027.

Coinbase’s (COIN) Bitcoin-Backed Loans Surpass $1B as Exchange Prepares to Lift Borrowing Cap

by admin September 30, 2025

Coinbase (COIN) said its bitcoin-backed loan program has surpassed $1 billion in originations since launching in January, underscoring growing demand for crypto as collateral.

The exchange currently offers retail customers in the U.S. the ability to borrow cash against BTC$114,258.31 holdings through the on-chain Morpho platform. A spokesperson said the average loan size sits at $54,000 but noted the firm plans to raise its borrowing cap from $1 million to $5 million in the coming weeks.

“We do see some users borrowing up against the current $1 [million] loan limit, and are excited to meet their needs, as well,” the spokesperson said. “We work closely with the Morpho team to ensure that we maintain steady liquidity in the onchain loan protocol as we roll out to more customers with larger loans.”

The product caters to customers looking to access cash without selling their bitcoin, a use case that mirrors how homeowners tap equity or how businesses leverage equipment. Coinbase said top applications include debt consolidation, covering large unexpected expenses such as medical bills or taxes, investing in real estate, and making high-cost purchases.

The move comes as the asset-based lending industry continues to expand. A July report projected the market could reach $1.3 trillion by 2030, reflecting broader interest in loans secured by assets beyond traditional real estate or vehicles.

By pushing the ceiling higher, Coinbase is positioning itself to serve wealthier clients and investors who may want to borrow against larger bitcoin holdings.

The milestone highlights the steady integration of crypto into conventional financial practices.

Historic Flip: Bitcoin ETFs On Pace To Surpass Gold ETFs In AUM

by admin August 30, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

In the dynamic financial sector, Bitcoin ETFs are rapidly gaining ground against their gold counterparts, with inflows pushing total assets under management toward record highs. Bitcoin ETFs are set to overtake gold ETFs in total assets under management.

Bitcoin ETFs Cement Role As Institutional Gateway To Crypto

Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) are on the brink of making history globally. In an X post, the Kobeissi Letter, an industry-leading commentary on global capital markets, has revealed that BTC ETFs are on track to surpass Gold ETFs in assets under management (AUM) for the first time in history, marking a historic milestone in global markets. Over the past 12 months, AUM in the largest cryptocurrency ETFs has doubled to $150 billion, while gold ETFs have climbed 40% to a record of $180 billion.

The comparison highlights how rapidly momentum has shifted. Just three years ago, gold ETFs were five times larger than Bitcoin ETFs. Presently, with accelerating inflows into digital asset products, that gap is narrowing at a historic speed.

If current trends continue, Bitcoin ETFs could surpass gold ETFs as early as next year. This is a symbolic flip that underscores the rise of crypto from speculative asset to mainstream portfolio allocation.

BTC ETFs growth against Gold ETFs | Source: Chart from The Kobeissi Letter

Lately, ETFs are proving to be the engine behind the current crypto bull market. According to Ucan_Coin, BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, oversees nearly 2,000 funds, with about 1,400 of them being ETFs. Clients buy into these funds, while BlackRock earns fees on the assets under management.

However, the Bitcoin Spot ETF fee is just 0.25%, but the power lies in scale and liquidity. Over the last two years, ETFs have provided the critical fuel for this rally, with nearly 20% of all liquidity entering crypto now flowing directly from ETF products.

As Ucan_Coin highlights, BlackRock’s IBIT stands out. As the chart demonstrates, IBIT is the locomotive pulling the entire market, driving inflows and setting the pace for the broader bull run.

ETF Inflows Signal Rising Institutional Appetite For Bitcoin

The US spot Bitcoin ETFs are gaining remarkable momentum, while generating $5 to $10 billion in daily volume on their most active trading days. Pushpendra Singh, Co-founder of PushpendraTech and SmartViewAi, has explained that this surge is a clear sign that institutional investors are increasingly seeking regulated exposure to Bitcoin, and ETFs are rapidly becoming their preferred gateway.

Despite the ETF boom, Binance continues to dominate the spot market, processing between $10 to $18 billion in daily spot volume and holding a 29% market share. This is more than double the 13% market share currently held by US-based ETFs, and it puts Binance comfortably ahead of other major exchanges in terms of liquidity.

Ethereum ETF inflows surpass Bitcoin for a full week

by admin August 28, 2025

For an entire week, Ethereum spot ETFs have attracted more money than Bitcoin ETFs, marking a clear shift in how investors are allocating funds.

Summary

  • Ethereum ETFs attracted $1.83 billion from August 21 to 27, significantly surpassing Bitcoin ETFs, which brought in $171 million during the same period.
  • Over the past month, Ethereum ETFs have seen approximately $3.7 billion in net inflows, while Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of about $803.4 million.
  • The recent ETF inflows align with Ethereum’s price gains, as ETH climbed to nearly $4,950 before settling around $4,600, up 19% for the month.

Ethereum (ETH) ETFs saw a total of $1.83 billion in inflows from August 21 to 27, while Bitcoin ETFs attracted just $171 million during the same period. According to data from SoSoValue, exchange-traded funds tracking ETH brought in $307.2 million during their latest trading session, while Bitcoin (BTC) ETFs registered $81.3 million in net inflows.

This extends their week-long trend of positive flows, with Ethereum ETFs now on a four-day winning streak, while Bitcoin ETFs struggle to keep pace.

In August so far, Ethereum ETFs have attracted approximately $3.7 billion in net inflows. By contrast, Bitcoin ETFs have recorded net outflows of about $803.4 million, driven largely by the $1.17 billion withdrawn during the week ending August 22.

Even more interesting is the scale of the inflows relative to Ethereum’s size. Despite having a smaller market cap than Bitcoin, Ethereum ETFs brought in over 10x more capital over the last 5 trading days.

The ongoing trend contrasts sharply with ETH ETFs’ earlier underperformance this year, when Bitcoin ETFs dominated weekly and monthly gains. This reversal reflects a shift in investor preference toward ETH, with many now seeing greater growth potential in the current cycle as institutional interest deepens.

Ethereum ETF growth fueled by price boost

Ethereum ETFs’ strong inflows have come alongside a steady rise in price. Over the past month, ETH has climbed significantly, even recently reaching a new all-time high near $4,950.

While it has readjusted to trade at $4,600 at the time of writing, the asset remains roughly 7.3% up on the week and 19% this month, and its momentum so far has reinforced bullish sentiment.

Bitcoin, on the other hand, trades just over $113,000. The crypto king dipped to around $109,000 earlier this week, now sitting in the red for the month with an approximate 5% decline. While not showing signs of major weakness, BTC’s lack of sustained momentum has made room for Ethereum to stand out in price performance and institutional fund flows.

A similar trend is evident in corporate accumulation. In recent months, demand for ETH among corporate entities has outpaced Bitcoin, with many aggressively buying ETH while institutional Bitcoin purchases slow.

Meanwhile, Ethereum ETF assets under management have also surpassed Bitcoin in recent months. Over the last 30 days, ETH ETFs grew nearly 58%, while Bitcoin ETFs declined about 10.7%.

Upcoming macroeconomic data from the U.S. could influence how these flows continue. If markets remain uncertain, ETFs may become even more appealing as a regulated, accessible way to gain crypto exposure. For now, Ethereum has the upper hand not just in price action, but in narrative. The question is whether it can sustain that momentum as the ETF market matures.

Advisors Surpass Hedge Funds as Leading Ethereum ETF Holders

by admin August 27, 2025

Ethereum ETFs are pulling heavyweight investors deeper into the market, with new data revealing a strong wave of institutional accumulation. Bloomberg analyst James Seyffart reported on X that advisors and hedge funds are now leading Ethereum ETF holdings, a signal of shifting Wall Street interest.

Yesterday, we published our note on the top holders of Ethereum ETFs. Advisors are dominating the known holders and have pulled away from Hedge Funds. pic.twitter.com/qvP6ZGN3VI

— James Seyffart (@JSeyff) August 27, 2025

According to the data he provided, investment advisors lead with over $1.35 billion invested in more than 539,000 ETH. They have increased their holdings by nearly 220,000 ETH, keeping their top spot in the market. Hedge funds followed with $688 million in exposure, adding 140,000 ETH. Consequently, advisors and hedge funds remain the strongest drivers of inflows.

Major Players Step In

Additionally, Bloomberg’s breakdown highlights Goldman Sachs as the largest disclosed holder with $721 million in Ethereum ETFs. The bank boosted its position by more than 160,000 ETH.

In a follow-up post, Seyffart revealed Jane Street and Millennium Management ranking next, with exposures of $190 million and $187 million. Other big firms such as Capula Management, DE Shaw, and HBK Investments also had notable stakes.

As most firms increased their exposure, a few made cuts. Schofield Strategic Advisors trimmed its holdings by over 16,000 ETH, and Van Eck Associates reduced its stack by approximately 2,700 ETH.

ETF Market Momentum Builds

Furthermore, recent data from SoSoValue indicates that inflows are holding strong. On August 26, Spot Ethereum ETFs saw $455 million in net inflows. Since their launch, cumulative inflows have reached $13.33 billion, while total assets have moved to $29.89 billion, making up 5.4% of Ethereum’s market cap.

BlackRock’s ETHA was leading with $323 million in daily inflows, which supported its assets to $16.9 billion. Following closely was Fidelity’s FETH, which attracted $85.5 million in inflows and now has  $3.66 billion in assets. Grayscale ETHE on other side faces challenges, whereby it experienced $4.5 billion in outflows, despite seeing a slight daily inflow.

Demand for Ethereum ETFs from both retail and institutional investors is on the rise. Alongside continued inflows and growing holdings, it bolsters Ethereum’s standing as the largest cryptocurrency following Bitcoin.

Crypto liquidations surpass $900m following Fed Chair's Jackson Hole speech

Crypto liquidations surpass $900m following Fed Chair’s Jackson Hole speech

by admin August 26, 2025

Crypto liquidations have hit $940 million as Bitcoin slips briefly below $109,000. This mass liquidation comes only a few days after the market saw gains following the Fed Chair’s Jackson Hole speech.

Summary

  • Crypto liquidations cross over $940 million after BTC briefly dips below $110,000.
  • The overall crypto market lost $200 billion despite seeing major gains from the Fed Chair’s speech about possibly cutting interest rates.

According to data from CoinGlass, the majority of crypto liquidations were long positions; which made up $826.51 million of the total $941 million of liquidations.

As Bitcoin (BTC) briefly dipped below the $110,000 threshold, Bitcoin positions made up the second largest portion of liquidations on the board. Based on the 24-hour heatmap, Bitcoin liquidations have hit $277.21 million or nearly 30% of the total crypto liquidations.

This wave of liquidations comes only a few days after a late-week dovish signal from Fed Chair Jerome Powell, which triggered gains of $594 million for the crypto market. However, the hype was apparently short-lived as BTC has fallen off its $110,000.

On August 22, at the Jackson Hole, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell hinted at possible interest rate cuts ahead as he stated that there was currently a high level of uncertainty that is making it difficult for policymakers.

This move sparked major gains in the crypto market as Bitcoin climbed to a weekly high of $116,960 as it nearly touched the $117,000 level. However, the victory ended too soon as BTC avalanched down to the $109,000 range.

What could high crypto liquidations mean for the market?

Crypto liquidations hitting $941 million could indicate extreme volatility and over-leveraging by traders within the wider crypto market. Considering liquidations are triggered by price swings that close long and short positions, such a large-scale wipeout points to an imbalance between bullish and bearish sentiment, with cascading liquidations accelerating the downward move.

This is evident through the overall crypto market cap losing $200 billion or around 2.2% of its market cap. On August 26, the crypto market cap fell from its $4 trillion high and stands at $3.8 trillion. Meanwhile, Bitcoin has yet to recover from its fall from grace; it hangs precariously at the edge of $110,000 as it currently trades at $110,250.

Ethereum (ETH) is faring slightly better despite a 4.9% dip as it stays within the $4,400 range with a value of $4,429.

Ethereum treasury firm ETHZilla today announced a share buyback program of up to $250 million of its outstanding common stock. The company also revealed that it now holds more than 102,000 ETH on its balance sheet.

ETHZilla Increases Ethereum Holdings

According to today’s announcement, ETHZilla currently holds a total of 102,237 ETH at an average acquisition price of $3,948. Executive Chairman McAndrew Rudisill commented:

At ETHZilla, we continue to deploy capital to accelerate our Ethereum treasury strategy with discipline and record speed, As we continue to scale our ETH reserves and pursue differentiated yield opportunities, we believe an aggressive stock repurchase program at the current stock price underscores our commitment to maximizing value for shareholders.

ETHZilla’s Ethereum holdings are now valued at more than $489 million. This latest acquisition positions the company as the fourth-largest publicly traded firm with an Ethereum treasury.

Data from CoinGecko shows that digital assets mining firm Bitmine Immersion currently holds the largest in the world with more than 1.7 million ETH on its balance sheet. It is followed by SharpLink with more than 740,000 ETH in its crypto reserves.

Notably, ETHZilla still maintains close to $215 million in cash equivalents. Following today’s announcement, its shares rose 6% to trade above $3.50. Year-to-date, the stock is up over 92%.

ETH Adoption Outshing Bitcoin Adoption?

While adding BTC as a part of the corporate treasury strategy has been a practice for a few years, seeing companies take the same approach with ETH has been the theme of 2025.

Compared to previous years, a wide range of companies began adding ETH to their treasuries this year. For instance, Nasdaq-listed SharpLink Gaming unveiled another major ETH purchase last week, bringing its total ETH holdings to over $3 billion.

Similarly, another publicly traded firm – BTCS Inc. said it had bought more than 14,500 ETH last week. Currently, BTCS Inc. is placed sixth in the list of publicly traded Ethereum firms, holding more than 70,000 ETH.

Another Nasdaq-listed software firm, GameSquare invested $5 million in ETH as part of its investment strategy. The firm aims to invest as much as $100 million in ETH and other digital assets.

The spillover effects of a strong corporate demand for ETH can also be seen in the performance of ETH-based crypto investment products. In July 2025, ETH-based investment products attracted total inflows worth $907 million.

Meanwhile, crypto pundits continue to give ambitious ETH price targets, with some as high as $10,000 ETH. At press time, ETH trades at $4,635, down 3.9% over the past 24 hours.

Altseason Momentum Strengthens As Altcoin Liquidations Surpass Bitcoin

by admin August 18, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

Speculation about a potential “altseason” has grown in the third quarter of 2025, fueled by brief periods in which several altcoins outperformed Bitcoin (BTC). However, the broader altcoin market has struggled to sustain momentum due to Bitcoin’s choppy price action, pressured by ongoing macroeconomic headwinds. Even so, fresh market data indicate traders are gradually shifting their focus away from Bitcoin and toward alternative cryptocurrencies, raising expectations that altcoins could drive the next leg of the crypto bull market.

Crypto Sentiment Shifts: Altcoins Lead In Liquidations, Overtake BTC

An altseason is defined as a period in the crypto bull run where altcoins generally outperform Bitcoin. It is typically marked by a decline in BTC Dominance as investors rotate capital from Bitcoin into other cryptocurrencies that promise higher profit returns during this period. Over the last two months, signals of an impending altcoin dominance for the current bull market continue to pile up.

In a QuickTake post on CryptoQuant, CEO & Founder of Alphractal, Joas Wedson, reports another omen in that altcoin liquidations are now higher than those of Bitcoin. From January to December 2024, the majority of cumulative liquidations on Binance came from Bitcoin positions, significantly outpacing those of all other cryptocurrencies.

Source: CryptoQuant

This trend painted a clear picture, i.e., Bitcoin was the primary focus for leveraged traders. However, since the start of 2025, the tides have turned. The BTC vs. Altcoin Cumulative Liquidation Delta, a key metric tracking the liquidation disparity between Bitcoin and altcoins, has been falling steadily throughout 2025. This decline indicates that altcoin liquidations are catching up and now surpassing those of BTC.

In the second half of 2025, this shift has become more pronounced, suggesting that traders are now more active and more vulnerable in altcoin markets than ever before. Wedson explains the bullish implications of this development for an altseason, stating that traders are now increasing speculations on altcoins more than Bitcoin.

This suggests a significant change in market behavior as Ethereum, XRP, and other alternative cryptocurrencies are increasingly being viewed as higher-risk, higher-reward vehicles, even as Bitcoin remains the dominant store of value in the crypto space.

Crypto Market Overview: Altseason Remains On Hold

At the time of writing, the total crypto market cap is now valued at $3.93 trillion following a 0.22% gain in the past day. Altcoins currently account for 40.4% of this value with a collective market cap of $1.59 trillion.

Meanwhile, the CoinMarketCap’s Altseason Index currently reads 46, suggesting that while altcoins are gaining ground, market conditions have yet to fully align with a classic “altseason” scenario.
