WNBA Power Rankings: Mercury ride streak up the board

Five weeks into the WNBA season, the Phoenix Mercury are blowing away a lot of predictions.

Questions about their roster turnover, lack of established chemistry and guard play landed them at No. 7 in our preseason rankings with a 49.8% chance to make the playoffs. Now, the Mercury are already more than halfway to the BPI’s projected 19.4 victories with 11 through their first 15 games, winning five straight to supplant the defending champion New York Liberty at No. 2 in the latest edition of our Power Rankings.

There was ample reason to expect a challenging start for the new-look Mercury. They said goodbye to two No. 1 draft picks who had become faces of the franchise — Diana Taurasi (retired) and Brittney Griner (free agency) — and returned only two players from last season in Kahleah Copper and Natasha Mack, who were both sidelined with injuries to start this campaign.

But after trading for Satou Sabally and Alyssa Thomas in the offseason, that hasn’t happened. Sabally leads the team in scoring (19.3 points per game) and rebounding (8.1). Thomas has brought her stat-stuffing ways from 11 seasons in Connecticut to Phoenix with averages of 14.4 points, 8.9 assists and 7.2 rebounds in 10 games after missing five with a calf injury. And despite playing only three games so far, Copper has been a strong leadership presence.

Thomas played in just one of Phoenix’s four losses — twice to each of the Minnesota Lynx and the Seattle Storm — while Copper didn’t play in any. That’s not to take away from the Lynx, who remain our No. 1 team, and the Storm, who are back in the top five. But considering how well Phoenix has done despite not having the big three of Copper, Sabally and Thomas on court together much, look out for just how high the Mercury can peak.

Napheesa Collier left in the third quarter of the June 17 game against Las Vegas with a back injury and did not play against Los Angeles on Saturday. The Lynx still won both, with Courtney Williams’ 20 points leading the way against the Aces and Kayla McBride’s 29 points pushing Minnesota past the Sparks. The victory over Las Vegas clinched Minnesota’s spot in the Commissioner’s Cup final as host against Indiana on July 1. We’ll watch to see how the Lynx manage Collier’s injury situation with a jam-packed July schedule looming.

Phoenix extended its five-win streak this past week with victories over Connecticut, New York and Chicago, putting up a season-high 107 points against the Sky. Of the Mercury’s six WNBA rookies, only Megan McConnell didn’t play professionally overseas. The 24-year-old Monique Akoa Makani and the 29-year-old Kathryn Westbeld are among their starters, with another 29-year-old rookie — Kitija Laksa — leading Phoenix in 3-pointers with 29.

The Liberty announced Saturday that center Jonquel Jones, last year’s Finals MVP, will miss four to six weeks with a right ankle sprain. She sustained the injury June 5 and missed two games, including New York’s first loss of the season (June 14 at Indiana), before returning with a double-double in the June 17 win over Atlanta then reinjuring it in Thursday’s loss to Phoenix. The Liberty started a four-game trip on Sunday with a loss to Seattle that Sabrina Ionescu (neck) also missed. They also are without Leonie Fiebich, who is playing for Germany as it enters the quarterfinals at EuroBasket. So, the next few weeks could continue to be a challenge for the defending champions.

Next seven days: @ DAL (June 24), vs. MIN (June 27), vs. NY (June 29)

The Dream had a chance to advance to the Commissioner’s Cup final but ran into the Liberty in the only game of New York’s past five that Jonquel Jones was not injured. She played 25 minutes and had 10 points and 10 rebounds in New York’s 86-81 victory on June 17. But Atlanta didn’t seem to brood on that, going on to defeat Washington and Chicago. We keep highlighting the dramatic difference in the Dream’s offense. And here’s another example: They have hit the 90-point mark five times in 14 games after reaching it just three times all of last season.

Nneka Ogwumike will turn 35 next week, but she’s still taking the kids to school. She totaled 77 points on 71.4% shooting and 24 rebounds in Seattle’s victories over Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York last week. It was her most statistically impressive three-game stretch since joining the Storm last season, when she was selected All-WNBA for the seventh time. Seattle has won six of its past seven games.

Which is the only team to beat the surging Storm over the past three weeks? The Valkyries, who did so June 14. Golden State followed that up with a disappointing loss at Dallas on June 17. But it rallied from a double-digit deficit to beat Indiana on Thursday then dominated Connecticut by 24 points on Sunday. Kayla Thornton is playing like an All-Star for Golden State, which has won five of its previous six.

Our staff analyzed what’s been plaguing the Aces, who are 3-5 in June. Some of their woes were abated with the return of three-time MVP A’ja Wilson, who missed three games in concussion protocol. She had 20 points and 14 rebounds in a 90-83 loss to Seattle on Friday then 24 and seven in an 89-81 victory against Indiana on Saturday. The defense that served Las Vegas so well in recent years was humming the way it used to, especially in the second half against the Fever, as the Aces avoided what would have been their first four-game losing streak under coach Becky Hammon.

Next seven days: @ SEA (June 24), vs. LA (June 26), @ DAL (June 27)

Sunday was bleak for Indiana basketball fans: The Fever lost their 16th consecutive game to the Aces then the Pacers lost Game 7 of the NBA Finals while Tyrese Haliburton suffered a torn right Achilles tendon.

In the fourth quarters of last week’s defeats to Las Vegas and Golden State, Indiana was outscored by a combined 26 points. Caitlin Clark had 51 points and 25 assists combined in the Fever’s three games over the past seven days, but she was just 1-of-17 from 3-point range in the two most recent contests. The Fever have been without DeWanna Bonner the past four games for personal reasons, and her absence hurts their defense and depth.

Sophie Cunningham’s takedown of Jacy Sheldon near the end of the June 17 win over the Sun sent a message to teams that choose to get extra physical with Clark, while Aliyah Boston’s combined 52 points and 31 rebounds across the previous three outings was a bright spot.

It was a good week for the Mystics, who nearly edged ahead of the Fever in these rankings. Washington beat Chicago and Dallas (in overtime), but arguably even more impressive was taking Atlanta to the wire on the road before falling 92-91 on Friday. Brittney Sykes scored a season-high 32 points against the Sky, Shakira Austin put up a career-high 28 versus the Dream and rookie Sonia Citron had a season-high 27 against Dallas. Citron also made the game-winning 3-pointer versus the Wings.

After starting the campaign 1-11, Dallas had its best week yet with wins over Golden State and Connecticut as well as an overtime loss at Washington. That the Wings had a good chance at a 3-0 week is saying something after how much they have struggled. Paige Bueckers — who registered a combined 61 points, 15 rebounds and 16 assists over the three contests — is reestablishing herself in the Rookie of the Year race after missing time with concussion protocol and illness.

Previous ranking: 9

Next seven days: @ CHI (June 24), @ IND (June 26), vs. CHI (June 29)

The Sparks didn’t have Kelsey Plum (leg) against the Storm on Tuesday, but she returned with 15 points versus the Lynx on Saturday. Both outings resulted in losses. Los Angeles hasn’t been that bad of an offensive team, but it needs to improve on defense. The Sparks’ net rating of minus-7.1 is third worst in the league, ahead of only the Sky and the Sun.

Previous ranking: 11

Next seven days: vs. LA (June 24), @ GS (June 27), @ LA (June 29)

Chicago lost to Washington, Phoenix and Atlanta but stayed out of the Power Rankings cellar because Connecticut had a worse week. Plus, the Sky beat the Sun on June 15. A silver lining for Chicago: Kamilla Cardoso has scored in double figures over four of the past five games. Cardoso shot 69.2% from the field last week, but she still isn’t getting enough touches.

Previous ranking: 12

Next seven days: @ LV (June 25), @ SEA (June 27), @ MIN (June 29)

Connecticut has lost six in a row following an 0-4 week against Indiana, Phoenix, Dallas and Golden State that dropped the Sun to the bottom of the Power Rankings. The Sun still made headlines after the grabbing, pushing and eye poking in their contentious loss to the Fever on June 17, when Marina Mabrey shoved Caitlin Clark to the floor from the blindside but didn’t get ejected. Having the league’s lowest-scoring offense (71.8 PPG) continues to make things tough for Connecticut.

BlackRock buys $1.4B Bitcoin over six-day streak amid ETF boom

by admin June 18, 2025

ETF issuer and asset management firm BlackRock is expanding its Bitcoin portfolio with billions of dollars in fresh investments.

According to Arkham Intelligence data, on June 17, BlackRock purchased $250 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC). The acquisition is part of a broader accumulation streak that has now spanned six consecutive days, bringing the firm’s total Bitcoin investment during this period to $1.4 billion.

— Arkham (@arkham) June 17, 2025

The buying spree comes alongside a wave of inflows into BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), which has consistently led all spot Bitcoin ETFs in net inflows over the past week. On the same day as its latest BTC purchase, IBIT recorded approximately $639.2 million in net inflows, even as other major issuers like Fidelity, ARK, and Bitwise posted significant outflows.

The strong influx of funds and steady buying also follow a major milestone for IBIT, which recently became the fastest exchange-traded fund in history to surpass $70 billion in assets under management (AUM). The fund reached that mark in just 341 days, crushing the previous record of 1,691 days set by the SPDR Gold Shares ETF.

At press time, Bitcoin is trading at $104,589, down roughly 5% over the past week as mounting geopolitical tensions weigh on broader market sentiment. BlackRock’s accumulation streak suggests that institutional demand remains strong and that the firm may be capitalizing on the recent price dip to increase its holdings.

With the latest purchases, IBIT now manages approximately $74.8 billion in assets and holds 670,295 Bitcoin in its portfolio.

Beyond BlackRock, several traditional financial heavyweights are also doubling down on Bitcoin. Strategy, the largest corporate holder of BTC, recently made a $1.05 billion purchase, reinforcing its long-term bullish stance.

Other major players, including Japan-based MetaPlanet and Europe’s The Blockchain Group, have also continued to grow their Bitcoin holdings, signaling widening institutional adoption across global markets.

Ethereum price signals rally as ETF winning streak continues

by admin June 15, 2025

The current Ethereum price formed a bullish flag and a golden cross pattern, indicating an eventual comeback as ETF inflows jump.

Ethereum (ETH) was trading at $2,530 at last check on Saturday, inside the narrow range where it has remained since May 10. This price is about 85% above its lowest level in April this year.

Data shows that American investors are aggressively accumulating Ethereum. SoSoValue numbers show that spot Ethereum ETFs have had inflows in the past five consecutive weeks.

These funds added $528 million in inflows this week, a big increase from last week’s $281 million. This increase brings the cumulative net inflow to $3.85 billion and the total amount held by these funds to over $10 billion.

BlackRock’s ETHA ETF has had $5.23 billion in inflows and now holds $4.1 billion in assets. Grayscale’s ETHE and ETH ETFs hold $2.8 billion and $1.3 billion in assets, while Fidelity’s $1.3 billion in inflows.

A likely reason for the ETH accumulation is that it became undervalued as its price plunged in April. The closely-watched market value to realized value or MVRV dropped to minus 0.86 on April 9.

A falling MVRV indicator signals that an asset is highly undervalued because it compares the current market cap and the realized value, which is the price at which each coin was last moved and aggregated across supply.

Ethereum also maintains a big market share in key crypto industries. It has a total value locked of $134 billion and a market dominance of 62%. It also has a stablecoin dominance of 50%, with its total holdings rising to $125 billion.

Ethereum price technical analysis

ETH price chart | Source: crypto.news

The daily chart shows that Ethereum price has formed a bullish flag pattern. This pattern comprises a vertical line, which represents the flag pole. It also has a flag, which can be a horizontal or a descending channel. It is now in the flag section.

ETH price has formed a golden cross pattern as the 50-day and 200-day Weighted Moving Averages crossed each other. Therefore, the most likely scenario is where it bounces back, and possibly retests the psychological point at $3,000. A move above $3,000 will boost the possibility of it soaring to $4,000 eventually.

Spot Ether ETFs ongoing inflow streak has hit $812.2M inflows

by admin June 7, 2025

US-based spot Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have just recorded a third consecutive trading week of inflows. If next week follows suit, the current inflow streak alone may surpass $1 billion in total inflows.

On June 6, spot Ether (ETH) ETFs posted $25.3 million inflows for the trading day, extending the streak to 15 consecutive inflow days, according to Farside data.

Ether ETF inflow streak brings in a significant amount of net total

The current inflow streak since May 16 has now brought in $837.5 million, roughly 25% of the total $3.32 billion in net inflows since spot Ether ETFs launched in July 2024.

If the pattern continues into the coming week, an additional $162.5 million in inflows would push the streak’s total to $1 billion.

In contrast, spot Bitcoin (BTC) ETFs saw its inflow streak break on May 29, with $346.8 million in outflows. Since then, flows have been volatile, with a mix between inflow and outflow days.

Meanwhile, the spot price of Ether is up 31.23% over the past 30 days, trading at $2,490 at the time of publication, according to CoinMarketCap data.

Cointelegraph recently reported that a multi-year gold fractal is making a strong case for an Ether price rally toward $6,000 in the coming months.

Technical analyst Crypto Eagles said on June 3 that Ether appears to be repeating in the current 2024–2025 cycle, potentially setting the stage for a new all-time high.

Ether’s current all-time high of $4,878 was reached in November 2021, according to CoinGecko data.

Some industry commentators believe that adding staking to spot Ether ETFs is necessary for a stronger performance in the long run.

On May 31, Cointelegraph reported that the first Ethereum and Solana staking ETFs could debut in the United States within weeks following a recent filing by ETF provider REX Shares.

ETF analyst James Seyffart said that, while the launch date is still unknown, the firm used “regulatory workarounds to get these products to market.”

Dow Jones snaps win streak as Fed Beige Book flags weak growth, rising costs

by admin June 4, 2025

U.S. stocks ended mixed Wednesday after a weak private payrolls report and a cautious economic outlook from the Fed’s Beige Book fueled concerns about growth, inflation, and tariffs.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average snapped a four day winning steak, closing lower by 91.90 points, or 0.22%. The S&P 500 was nearly flat, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.32% to end at 19,460.49.

Wednesday’s stock trading session sentiment was hit by a weaker-than-expected ADP employment report, which showed private payrolls rose by only 37,000 in May, notably below estimates. The reading comes ahead of Friday’s nonfarm payrolls data and may force the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury dropped to 4.349%, its lowest since early May.

Fed’s Beige Book flags weakening growth, rising price pressures.

Further clouding the economic outlook, the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book, released on Wednesday morning, reported a “slight decline” in U.S. economic activity over the past six weeks. Hiring activity was mostly flat as business owners put off expansion plans due to elevated policy uncertainty from Washington and tariff-related cost pressures.

“All Districts reported elevated levels of economic and policy uncertainty,” the Fed noted. The report also cited “widespread reports of contacts expecting costs and prices to rise at a faster rate going forward.”

Tariffs were mentioned 122 times in the Beige Book, up from 107 in April.

Businesses across multiple regions, including New York and Philadelphia, reported rising input costs. Some firms are expecting reduced profit margins or passing along some additional cost to consumers to manage input spikes.

Boston, New York, and Philadelphia saw declines in activity. However, regions like Richmond, Atlanta, and Chicago reported modest growth. Overall, the Fed found that even in stronger districts, hiring activity was cautious.

Spot Bitcoin (BTC) ETFs Snapped 10-Day Inflow Streak With $358M in Net Outflows: JPMorgan

by admin May 30, 2025

U.S.-listed spot bitcoin

exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded their first day of net outflows in 10 trading sessions on Thursday, according to a research report by JPMorgan (JPM).

The Wall Street bank estimated that spot bitcoin ETFs saw $358 million of redemptions yesterday, according to a Friday report, with just one, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) attracting a net inflow. IBIT gathered in a net $125 million, the bank observed.

In contrast, Fidelity’s FBTC saw net outflows of $166 million, leading the redemptions, the report said. Other major contributors included the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) -$107 million, ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) -$89 million and the Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB) -$71 million, the bank said

JPMorgan said smaller outflows were also noted across the remaining issuers.

The bitcoin price slipped 1.1% on the day, but market activity remained robust with trading volumes of $5.39 billion, well above the 20-day average of $2.81 billion, the report added.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency was trading around $105,656 at publication time.
