Want to improve your Elden Ring Nightreign runs? You should really stop sleeping on your consumable items

by admin June 3, 2025

I’ve been playing a lot of Elden Ring Nightreign… and I mean a lot. At the time of writing, I’ve ploughed around 70 hours into chaotic Expeditions and touching Remembrance quests, experimenting with what each Nightfarer is capable of and getting to know the Nightlords all too well.

Still, this has nothing on how much time I’ve spent playing Elden Ring. Both solo and via Seamless Co-op, I’ve sunk hundreds of hours into The Lands Between. In all that time, however, there is one thing I often neglected and rarely used: consumables. Cleansing Boluses, Throwing Pots, Warming Stones, and Boiled Crabs are just a few of the items left to waste away in my inventory for the rest of time.

Nightreign throws these items at you often, and while you can forgo them for Smithing Stones and expensive Physicks and still have a successful run, these consumables – and the power-up they appear to have had in Nightreign – can make troubling fights and Nightlords that bit easier. And who doesn’t love throwing a pot at a big, beastly boss and watching it cancel its attack as a result, saving your teammate from almost certain death? It’s a rush!

Now, one of the first things I purchase during a run – after spending Runes on my first few levels – is an Item Pouch from a Merchant. More consumables? Yes, please. After this, it becomes a mission to pick up all of the Throwing Pots and Grease that I can that caters to our chosen Nightlord’s weakness. Let’s not forget Cleansing Boluses either, which when consumed, provide a permanent Resistance buff. Perfect for all those Deathblight and Poison ruins scattered around Limveld!

Let’s say I am queued up against the big, three-headed wolf that is Tricephalos, who’s notably weak to Holy Damage. Not only is my main goal for the Expedition to find a weapon with a Holy affinity, but to pick up and hold tightly onto any Holy Water Pots or Holy Grease I can get my hands on, just in case. Maybe I don’t find a Holy weapon in time and this is all I’ve got, or maybe one of my teammates is less lucky, so I can hand over all of my Holy Grease to them pre-Nightlord to maximise our chances of winning the fight.

There’s also Exalted Flesh and Boiled Crab, with the former buffing your attack and the latter buffing your physical damage negation quite significantly for a time. If your pouches are empty, these never go amiss, especially if the character using these buff consumables happens to have Nightlord Augur’s Relic equipped, which causes used items to confer effects to nearby allies. This means that when you enter a fight or stagger a boss, one player can pop their consumables while the others attack, and everyone will benefit from the buff. Similarly, one thing most Nightfarers can’t get enough of is Stamina, and what helps with this in a pinch? Pickled Turtle Neck. I can’t get enough of the stuff.

Last, but not least, Warming Stones and Starlight Shards. These two consumable items are situational, but taking two Warming Stones into a Nightlord fight is never a waste. Given just how huge the arenas are, it’s often quite easy to throw a stone down and stand over it – regaining your HP slowly – while your team aggros the boss. This saves you using a flask, allowing you to take part in the fight for even longer and have a better chance of winning.

Likewise, Starlight Shards are a must-have for any class that uses FP (such as the Revenant), as they’ll refill a good portion of your FP bar instantly, unlike the base game, where Starlight Shards restore FP very slowly. And that’s a running theme with Nightreign’s consumable items: they’re so much more powerful than they ever were in Elden Ring or Shadow of the Erdtree, and thus, genuinely make a difference and are highly useful to any Expedition. Your pouches aren’t needed for the Spectral Seed or Spirit Summons, so go wild lining your pockets with consumable items!

Throwing Pots alone can do a good chunk of damage to a boss, which the Duchess can then restage if you have her on your team, or you can simply use them to aid with the Frost stacks or Poison build-up that your teammates are currently working on. Playing around the weaknesses of Nightlords is also vital in Nightreign, and these particular items help you with doing that, giving you an extra, much-needed boost for taking these formidable opponents down at the end of your Expeditions.

Next time you see a Fire Pot or some Boiled Crabs, pick them up. Don’t let your consumables go to waste and don’t hesitate to switch things out of your pouches as you find items better for your particular Nightfarer or the Nightlord you’re coming against, you never know whether that handful of Warming Stones, stack of Starlight Shards, or those few Exalted Flesh buffs may make the difference between winning and losing an Expedition…

The ‘War Between Land and the Sea’ Trailer Gives Earth a Battle the Doctor Can’t Stop

by admin May 31, 2025

With the conclusion of the latest season of Doctor Who, all eyes are on what’s next for adventures in time and space… and when, exactly, we’ll be getting them. But before the Doctor returns, Earth is going to have to stand alone in a new spinoff miniseries, The War Between Land and the Sea.

To mark the climax of Doctor Who‘s 2025 season, today the BBC revealed the first footage from War Between Land and Sea, which will see UNIT as the front line of defense when the Sea Devils—a race of aquatic reptilians who have existed on Earth since the dawn of time, hiding their advance civilization in hibernation alongside their other distantly affiliated ancient Earth dwellers, the Silurians, for millions of years—emerge from hiding and make themselves known to the Human race.

How do things go? Well, you could tell by the title of the miniseries alone that the answer to that is seemingly “not well”—and without the Doctor to fall back on like they’ve been able to the last couple of times the Sea Devils and Silurians alike tried to emerge, it’s up to humanity to find away to counter the threat of Earth’s ancient reclaimers… and if not co-exist with them, survive their wrath.

War Between Land and the Sea will feature several familiar faces from Doctor Who. There’s a few returning characters, including Jemma Redgrave, Alexander Devrient, and Ruth Madeley reprising their roles in UNIT as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Colonel Ibrahim, and Shirley Ann Bingham, respectively. In more of a deep cut, Colin McFarlane will reprise his role as General Austin Pierce from the third season of Torchwood, Children of Earth.

But, as seen in the trailer above, the series also stars two Doctor Who favorites, but as entirely new characters. Loki‘s Gugu Mbatha-Raw played companion Martha Jones’ sister, Tish, throughout the third season of Doctor Who, and is now a mysterious vanguard of the Sea Devils’ return, while Being Human‘s Russell Tovey previously appeared in the 2007 holiday special “Voyage of the Damned” as Midshipman Alonso Frame, now plays Barclay, a human who has seemingly been tasked with leading humanity’s response.

The War Between Land and the Sea will run for five episodes when it hits the BBC in the UK, and Disney+ internationally, and is currently expected to launch sometime in 2026.

A security guard stops a troublesome park guest in Planet Coaster 2

Planet Coaster 2’s latest update introduces crime and punishment to your theme park, adding pickpockets, vandals, and security guards to stop them

by admin May 31, 2025

I’ve always believed Planet Coaster 2 to be a better game than it’s typically given credit for. But one issue I have with the sequel, and indeed, the series in general is that your park visitors are a bit dull.

They’re gloriously animated, I should stress, with tons of fun incidental detail in how they move and interact with the world. But behaviourally they’re all tediously genial, consumerist chuds who wander blithely around your park, going ‘whee’ on the rides and gleefully lapping up all your overpriced food and souvenir tat. The worst thing that ever happens is they occasionally throw up or get sunburned.

Perhaps this is just what Disney adults are like, but either way, it doesn’t make for a particularly engaging group of people to manage. Where’s the friction? The complaints? The drama?

You may like

Well, update 5 for Planet Coaster 2 adds a bit of that in, sprinkling a criminal fraternity among your visitors. Now, pickpockets will prowl along the pathways of your park, aiming to fleece the pockets of other visitors. On top of that, parkgoers who are especially dissatisfied with your park will no longer just sulk. They’ll actively engage in vandalism, booting over bins and kicking in benches. There’s that rebellious spirit I’m after!

Planet Coaster 2 | Update 5 Highlights – YouTube

Watch On

Of course, as the owner of the park, you don’t have to just sit there and take it. You can now hire security guards to counter these criminal acts. Security guards reduce the risk of pickpocketing and vandalism simply by being there, but they’ll also chase down guests suspected of misdeeds and eject them from the park (although not literally, sadly).

Law and disorder aren’t the only new features coming in update 5. The patch brings back the sci-fi theme from the original Planet Coaster, letting you dress up rides and pools in glorious retrofuturism. You can also customise the colour of rocks and glass pieces, while the game’s rather cumbersome pathing tool has been improved to feature an area delete tool and customisable stations for both coasters and flumes.

The update also provides an array of bugfixes, visual enhancements for several water rides, and adjustments to various systems. The latter includes a much more detailed breakdown of prestige and how it impacts rides, more information on ride reputation, and better explication of guests’ individual moods.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

The new additions and fixes seems to have made an immediate impact upon players. While the game’s overall rating remains mixed on Steam, recent reviews skew toward mostly positive. “This game has become truly amazing! Its release was a bit rocky, but wow, what a game it is now, writes user Daan. “Game had a rough start, but a good update schedule has brought it to the point w[h]ere it is THE theme park simulator,” adds DenniS. Whether you liked the game already or not, it certainly seems like Planet Coaster 2 is on the right track.

These 3 free web apps helped me stop procrastinating

These 3 free web apps helped me stop procrastinating

by admin May 27, 2025

I don’t know if I would call myself a big procrastinator, but I’m not immune to it — none of us really are. Those days when you just don’t feel like doing anything much are almost inevitable, but unfortunately, the busy world we live in and our rapid work schedules don’t account for such days. Whether you feel like it or not, work still needs to get done, one way or another.

At times, when my schedule’s packed and I’m exhausted, I find myself procrastinating instead of getting work done. Instead of getting mad at myself, I found three web apps that helped me get more productive when I needed it most.

Todoist

Todoist

Todoist is a super simple web app that, if I’m going to be honest, no one truly needs. Its core functionality can be replaced by a piece of paper or things like Google Calendar. After all, it’s exactly what it sounds like — a to-do list.

Although I said that no one needs Todoist, that doesn’t mean that using it didn’t completely transform my work routines. These days, I never go a single work day without Todoist, and I haven’t paid a penny for it. (Putting it that way makes me feel a bit guilty. I very well might try the paid version — the free app has been nothing short of wonderful.)

Todoist lets you plan out your day and your week. You can assign little tasks to yourself, shift them around from day to day, and assign them different priority levels. You can also set them up to only be due at a certain time of day.

You can choose to either focus on one day at a time or take a look at your upcoming tasks, browsing through one week at a time. Each task can receive a label or a filter, making it easier to find certain types. You can duplicate tasks, although I find that to be the only chore-like part of using the app; it takes a bit of time and isn’t super intuitive.

Todoist also offers integration with various extensions, such as Google Calendar, making for a more seamless experience. There’s even an AI assistant (of course) which I haven’t really needed to try. I kind of love the barebones aspect of Todoist, and the simplicity that it provides.

Todoist keeps me accountable. If I end the day with a task (or five) staring me in the face, you can bet I feel a little more motivated to finish them ASAP. The app can also send you email reminders, which, again, adds to the whole accountability aspect of it.

Could I reasonably replace Todoist with a planner and a pen? Yes. Would I want to? No way. I love Todoist, and I will keep recommending it to anyone who cares to listen.

Pomofocus

Pomofocus

Those who have ever struggled with staying productive probably know of the Pomodoro method. It’s a time management technique that helps you break up your work into smaller, hyper-focused intervals. Between each interval, you get a short break, at which point you can freely indulge in all the mindless scrolling/chatting/watching YouTube that you probably want to indulge in outside of your break. The usual intervals are 25 minutes of work and five minutes of relaxation.

Again, the Pomodoro method is nothing new, but Pomofocus makes it simple and easy to follow (or customize). You can start the timer without any annoying sign-up process; just press start and begin your work.

Pomofocus lets you pick between short and long breaks (which I find helpful if I need a bit more than five minutes, but it’s also a bit too easy to lose focus if your break lasts too long during these intervals, at least for me). I like that you can assign yourself tasks with an estimate of how many “pomodoros” each will take, then work through them in the app.

Pomofocus doesn’t force you to do anything. Your Pomodoro timer can be paused or skipped at any given time, so it does mostly come down to self-discipline. I enjoy it for similar reasons as Todoist: Simplicity and ease of access. It’s not going to force you to get your work done, though. I’ve recommended Pomofocus to several friends, and many of them just end up procrastinating through their Pomodoro timer.

I Miss My Cafe

I Miss My Cafe

If you’ve ever brought your laptop to a coffee shop for the sole purpose of working, you probably know what that can do for your productivity.

There’s something comforting about the constant buzz of a coffee shop. The baristas, the customers, the machines whipping up lattes, and a faint playlist that you can often barely hear over the sound of the ambience of the place. It’s also a lot harder (at least for me) to procrastinate when I’m surrounded by people. That part can’t be achieved through an app (well, not directly, although things like Focusmate do exist), but you can always recreate your favorite parts of working in a coffee shop through the use of I Miss My Cafe.

I Miss My Cafe is a web app that connects to Spotify to let you create your perfect background noise mix for work. There are thousands of “rainy day” mixes on YouTube, but those cannot be customized. Here, you control the volume and the type of ambience that plays over the playlist. I like that it lets you choose between something noisier and something quieter; it’s very easy to make it suit your current needs.

These three web apps helped me combat procrastination. However, the one thing I’ve learned through all my attempts is that if you’re procrastinating, there’s probably a reason for it. If I’m rested and not too stressed, I get my work done one way or another — but on days when I’m neither, it helps to lean into these three apps combined with a healthy dash of self-discipline.

Hours Before Trump Crypto Dinner, Democrats Push Another Bill to Stop President’s Digital Asset Dealings

by admin May 25, 2025

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), the top Democrat on the powerful House Financial Services Committee, introduced legislation Thursday that would prevent the president, the vice president, members of Congress, and their immediate family members from launching or owning their own crypto assets while in office.

The “Stop TRUMP in Crypto Act of 2025” is, in name and by design, explicitly targeted at President Donald Trump, who, along with his business partners, has made billions of dollars in unrealized gains on numerous crypto ventures since returning to power.

A spokesperson for Rep. Waters on the House Financial Service Committee confirmed to Decrypt that the bill was intentionally introduced today to call attention to a private dinner Trump is set to have this evening with the top 220 holders of his meme coin. Press is barred from attending the event.

“Donald Trump is preparing to dine with the top donors of his memecoin who’ve made him, and his family, richer,” Waters said in a statement shared with Decrypt. “For all we know, Russia, China, or even North Korea could be buying Trump’s crypto to secure favors from the White House.”

“Enough is enough,” she added. “Congress can no longer ignore the biggest scam and abuse of power in American history.”

It has not been publicly disclosed who, exactly, will be attending Trump’s crypto dinner tonight. Democrats have expressed concern for weeks that foreign actors could take advantage of the situation by, effectively, buying access to Trump’s ear in a manner otherwise prohibited by U.S. campaign finance laws. One confirmed attendee of the dinner is Chinese-born crypto billionaire Justin Sun, who was previously under investigation by the Department of Justice for suspected financial crimes, and was sued by the SEC in 2023 for alleged fraud and market manipulation.

In recent months, Sun has not only purchased over $22 million worth of Trump’s meme coin, but also invested tens of millions of dollars in another Trump family crypto venture, World Liberty Financial. In February, the SEC requested its case against Sun be paused and announced a desire to explore a “potential resolution” in its litigation against the controversial crypto founder.

The bill introduced today would forbid Trump, while in office, from issuing, sponsoring, promoting, or receiving any compensation from the “sale, marketing, or mining or any digital asset in the United States.” It would also prevent him from trading any digital assets, while president, that he has material non-public information about.

The legislation would also apply these rules to the president’s spouse, his children, and his children’s spouses. In the last six months, First Lady Melania Trump launched her own meme coin, and Trump’s sons, Eric and Don Jr., have aggressively invested in all manner of crypto startups.

The bill is currently co-sponsored by 14 of the 23 other Democrats on the House Financial Services Committee, in addition to Ranking Member Waters.

As crypto-related legislation makes its way through Congress, Trump’s perceived crypto-related conflicts of interest have threatened to derail several bills which would, for the first time, offer formal legal pathways for issuing and trading various digital assets in the United States. Those efforts appear as of this week to be back on track, though the president’s crypto dealings—unaddressed in current versions of the legislation—certainly remain a thorn in the side of the bills’ sponsors.

Earlier this month, Rep. Waters led a Democrat walkout of a crypto-focused meeting of the House Financial Services Committee in protest of “Trump’s crypto corruption.” At the time, Waters told Decrypt the intention of the stunt was to compel lawmakers to add language to crypto regulation bills that would force Trump to divest from his crypto businesses while in office.

With those requests still unheeded by Republicans and pro-crypto Democrats, Waters has now opted to craft her own legislation on the subject. Similar bills targeting the president’s crypto activities, including the MEME Act, have already been introduced in Congress this year. None have yet managed to attract any Republican support.

70% of games with online requirements are doomed, according to Stop Killing Games survey

70% of games with online requirements are doomed, according to Stop Killing Games survey

by admin May 24, 2025

Stop Killing Games are a self-described consumer movement who are aggrieved about all the games with online requirements that become partly or completely unplayable, once publishers end official server support. They’re trying to persuade larger advocacy organisations like The European Consumer Organisation to propose new laws that put a stop to such shenanigans.

To support their campaign, they’ve carried out a survey of games with online requirements to work out how many are “dead”, dying or enduring thanks to developer or fan-implemented “end of life” plans, such as patched-in offline functionality. The resulting Google spreadsheet has 738 entries, of which a whopping 70% are apparently no longer playable or destined to become that way.

You can view the spreadsheet here. Beware that Google might badge it “suspicious”, because it harbours a bunch of links to publisher websites – it’s possible some of those publisher websites have naughty code, but it could also be simply that Google considers giant walls of links innately untrustworthy. One of the Stop Killing Games organisers, Youtuber Ross Scott, has also put together a video discussing the survey methodology and summarising the highlights.

Watch on YouTube

The survey sorts games into four broad categories: those that are no longer playable, those that are “at risk” for want of plans to maintain them once official support has ended, and those that have been “saved” by means of, say, the public release of the server code.

The volunteers found that of the 738 games included, 299 games were “dead”, with 313 games set to meet the same fate in the absence of publisher action. 110 of the games surveyed have been preserved by industrious players, following the cessation of official support, while just 16 had been salvaged by the developers.

The criteria for inclusion are a little blurry, admittedly. SKG have made some “judgement calls” about proof-of-concept fan emulators that launch the game in a minimally playable state, which they’re currently categorising as “dead”. The list also includes offline single player games that have online multiplayer components, such as Mass Effect 3. Scott strenuously makes the argument that these should be counted alongside always-online games, because it’s not like you can opt out of paying for multiplayer when you buy the game. He adds that, in any case, even if you strip away the games with offline single player components, 68.77% of the games that remain are still categorisable as either gone or going under.

The video notes that publishers can be frustrating elusive and unreadable on whether a game with an online requirement will be spared from demolition. A game might be said to support private servers, for example, theoretically allowing you to play it without official server support, but actually require you to access those private servers via the publisher.

There are many, many online-required live service games currently in development, despite some high profile disasters and much discontent about live service as a concept. The fact that so many games with online requirements are “dead” is hardly surprising. Large publicly traded companies are, after all, fuelled by profits rather than goodwill. They gain little from ensuring that those games remain playable, once they’re no longer part of the active portfolio. Still, you do come across the odd team or community that have successfully reconfigured a game to survive the apocalypse.

A few members of the Stop Killing Games team are hoping to set up a wiki of online games that face extinction, based on this research. If you fancy pitching in, you can get in touch by emailing deadgamestats@pm.me.

Seasonic’s next-generation Prime PSUs to will try to stop connectors from melting

by admin May 22, 2025

Seasonic plans to add a feature to its next-generation Prime power supplies that promises to solve the problem of overheating and melting 12VHPWR and 12V-2×6 power connectors once and for all. While the company promises to solve the problem, it does not resolve its source. At Computex, the company demonstrated a prototype.

A set of sensors, a microcontroller, and firmware that Seasonic plans to incorporate into its upcoming Prime power supplies will all work together, according to the company.

Although the production quality of cables, connectors, and the way people plug in their graphics cards have consequences, one of the key sources of the problem lies in the fact that graphics cards can create unbalanced loads on power rails in different circumstances, which can cause voltage increases and/or current increases on the power supply side. This causes wires in the power cable to overheat, eventually melting them and damaging graphics cards.

Seasonic proposes what is essentially two-factor protection against such a catastrophe. First up, contemporary premium power supplies can monitor their voltage output and current, and can alert PC owners of a malfunction. Seasonic proposes to use a special external device to tell users about problems, as well as enable end-users to monitor their 12V-2×6 connectors while using their graphics cards.

However,  this measure doesn’t work if you’re not at your computer. To that end, Seasonic has added special circuitry with sensors that measure temperature and current on 12V-2×6 power connectors near the PSU. If temperature or current exceeds designated thresholds, next-generation Seasonic Prime PSUs will not only notify the owner using an external device (if plugged in), but will also trigger over-temperature and over-current protection that the power supply already has and therefore shut the system down.

While this could possibly ruin a day of offline rendering, it could also possibly save a very expensive graphics card. On the other hand, if an abnormal shutdown also ruins an SSD or HDD with precious data, this will certainly cause more damage than help.

But this is a technology for next-generation PSUs, so we will see how Seasonic’s plans work out. Seasonic plans to finish development of its next-generation Prime-series PSUs by the end of the year and then start to sell them in the first quarter of 2026.

Pricing hasn’t been announced, though some additional chips and firmware work may boost pricing of already premium Prime power supplies to a new level.
