Researchers Pit Stone Age Seafaring Skills Against One of Earth’s Fiercest Currents

by admin June 25, 2025

Archaeologists estimate that humans first arrived on the Ryukyu Islands off the southwestern coast of Japan sometime between 35,000 and 27,500 years ago. How they did so, however, remains a mystery, especially since they would have had to cross one of the planet’s strongest ocean currents. To address this enduring question, scientists decided to attempt the Paleolithic voyage themselves.

Using replicas of tools that existed in the Japanese Archipelago during the Upper Paleolithic (around 50,000 to 10,000 years ago), researchers in Japan built a dugout canoe and used it to traverse the 68.4-mile-wide (110-kilometer) strait between Taiwan and Yonaguni Island, including the powerful Kuroshio current, in around 45 hours. The successful voyage represents a possible way people in present-day Taiwan may have traveled to the islands tens of thousands of years ago.

“Our 7.5-meter-long dugout, manufactured with edge-ground stone axes, was speedy and durable enough to cross this strait,” the researchers wrote in the study, published today in Science Advances. “This supports the early development of functional boats, such as dugouts, while our experiment also highlighted that this type of sea travel was possible only for experienced paddlers with advanced navigational skills.”

One of the greatest challenges to studying prehistoric seafaring is the fact that such ancient water vessels made of organic material, such as wood, have long since disintegrated. Without direct archaeological evidence, the next best way to shed light on how ancient people did things is through experimental archaeology—identifying possible approaches to bygone endeavors by physically replicating them in a simulated historical context.

University of Tokyo anthropologist Yousuke Kaifu and his co-authors have been attempting to reach the Ryukyu Islands à-la Paleolithic—without modern navigation technologies like GPS or compasses—since 2013. Before their successful voyage in 2019, they had experimented with reed-bundle rafts and bamboo rafts, neither of which were successful in crossing the Kuroshio Current. The winning design was a canoe made from a hollowed-out and polished Japanese cedar tree with a fire-charred interior, which carried five crew members.

“Given the absence of archaeological remains of Pleistocene watercraft, we narrowed down the possible Paleolithic seagoing craft by referencing the Holocene archeological and ethnographic records and considering the material availability, technological limitations of the time, and the voyaging capabilities of each craft,” the researchers explained. The Holocene, which began some 11,700 years ago, is the current time period. “We also aimed to investigate travel time, amount of efforts required, and other realities of Paleolithic ocean crossing for the first South Ryukyu islanders.”

In this spirit, the team developed computer models to simulate what such a crossing may have been like with Late Pleistocene oceanic conditions. According to the simulations—which also integrated data collected during the experimental voyage—the prehistoric journey’s success would have been determined by the starting point (ideally, calm bays), directional strategy (first paddle east-southeast, then northeast), and navigational skills (using the stars and Sun).

Furthermore, “our separate numerical simulation study suggests that this type of boat could also travel to Yonaguni Island from a different northern departure point in Taiwan (Taroko) across both the modern and Late Pleistocene oceans,” they added. “Paleolithic people are often regarded as ‘inferior’ among the general public, primarily due to their ‘primitive’ culture and technology. In sharp contrast, our [work] highlighted that they accomplished something extraordinary with the rudimentary technology available to them at the time.”

While such experimental projects can’t replace direct archaeological evidence, the study joins a host of recent hands-on approaches offering creative theories in the absence of direct material evidence.

Paint Cages In Stone Wave Cliffs

by admin June 11, 2025

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 can put players through the ringer, not just because of the emotional story, but also due to the challenging bosses the game throws at you. Luckily, most dungeons contain a special chest called a Paint Cage that can contain valuable items to help get through some of the tougher fights including the creature waiting for you at the end of the Stone Wave Cliffs.

Ironheart’s New Trailer Delivers A Couple Cool Surprises

However, like most cages, you will find them locked, and to open them you must shoot three locks hidden around the area. Stone Wave Cliffs includes two paint cages, let’s go over where to find them and how to crack ‘em open.

The first Paint Cage (near the entrance)

This Cage is definitely a little more hidden than the other. From the “Entrance” Checkpoint, continue forward, while hugging the right wall. Eventually, you will see a rope you can climb up. Once you do, continue forward until you arrive at a clearing with the Paint Cage right in the middle.

  • Lock one: Facing the Paint Cage, to the right you should see another rope to climb up. After you do, keep walking forward until you see a small cliff wall in front of you. At the top of it, you will see the lock.

  • Lock two: From the first lock, look to the right, there is a significantly higher cliff wall, with the second lock on top. You can technically see this one from the vantage point near Lock three, but it will be pretty far away and tough to hit.

  • Lock three: Much like lock two, there are actually two locations to hit this one. From the paint cage, you can actually see the lock behind it, however the jagged rocks are somewhat blocking it, so it is tough to see, let alone hit. To get a better view, look left while facing the cage. You should see a small hole you can crouch through. Crawl into it, and at the end, you will find handholds to climb up which you should do as well. This will lead you to a second vantage point. You should see a large ship in front of you with the Lock just below it.

The second Paint Cage (near the Old Farm)

As you make your way through the Stone Wave Cliffs, you will come across a clearing that appears to be an old farm. Fittingly, there is an expedition flag that lets you know this is named “The Old Farm”. As you walk down the hill, into the area, you will see a path to the left. Follow it to the end to see the Paint Cage. The locations of the three locks are:

  • Lock one: Facing the Paint Cage, look to the right. You will see a skinny tree, with the lock behind it.

Screenshot: Sandfall Interactive / Simon Estey / Kotaku

  • Lock two: Facing the Paint Cage, look to the left. You will notice a small cliff with the lock near the top of it.

Screenshot: Sandfall Interactive / Simon Estey / Kotaku

  • Lock three: You may have actually noticed this lock while you were walking towards the paint cage. On the trail that leads you to the chest, there is a lock on some planks. You would not have been able to see it due to it hiding behind some boxes, but you may have noticed some of the effects it gives off and tried to punch it (like some guides-writers may have). If you didn’t you should definitely be able to see it now. It’s between the two other locks.

Paint Cages can be a little tricky to find, and even trickier to open. However, both of the cages in Stone Wave Cliffs give you a new weapon to add to your arsenal. As you near the end of the game’s first act and face some of the monstrosities Gustave and his team encounter, you will be happy to have the extra help.

A Hitman co-op mode with Stone and Knight is in the works at IO Interactive

by admin June 7, 2025

Developer IO Interactive is developing a co-op mode for Hitman: World of Assassination.

Announced last night, this mode is still relatively under wraps, but does feature two names you may recognise: Stone and Knight. These two popped up in the Hitman Sniper mode.

On this co-op mode’s release, players will be able to pop into “exciting missions” from the Hitman world with their pal by their side. These missions will “challenge” players to rethink how they approach things now they are going in as one of a pair. Someone once said to me a good friend will always help you hide the bodies, so I guess that is very fitting for this story.

IO noted it was “early days” for its upcoming Hitman co-op mode, but it would share more news about it all with us “soon”, so stay tuned.

In addition to this little nugget, IO has also announced that Hitman: World of Assassination has now reached the 25m units sold milestone. The developer added the game has registered 80 million players, which takes into account players from World of Assassination, as well as its Free Starter Pack.

“Agent 47 continues to resonate with audiences around the world, proving the enduring appeal of the franchise as it approaches its 25th anniversary,” said IO head Hakan Abrak.

“Everyone at IOI extends its sincere thanks to the global community of players, and we look forward to delivering many more hours of stealth, creativity, and signature assassinations in the years to come.”

Elsewhere in Hitman news, players can now assassinate Le Chiffre from Casino Royale, with actor Mads Mikkelsen reprising his role from the 2006 film.

IO also recently lifted the lid on its upcoming Bond game. Earlier this week, we got a reveal trailer which introduced us to the young Bond at the start of his life as an agent. But, while it may be an origin story, 007: First Light already has plenty of nods to the Bond books and films that came before.

How to get the Mooncloud Stone and unlock the Pyramid Puzzle in DELTARUNE Chapter 3

Find the Mooncloud Stone to unlock the Pyramid in DELTARUNE.

The first quest you face in DELTARUNE Chapter 3 leads you to end up on Mr. Tenna’s TV show. You will be asked to play a sandbox game where Kris, Susie, and Ralsei’s virtual characters get placed in a desert, and they need to find three keys and one Mooncloud Stone to unlock the door of the Pyramid.

While it is fairly easy to find the three keys by exploring around the map and completing various mini-games like turn-based fights or quizzes, finding the Mooncloud Stone can be difficult. It might even take you a few tries to get properly acquainted with the mechanics if you’re playing it for the first time, like me.

But we have you covered with everything that you need to know about finding the Mooncloud Stone in DELTARUNE.

Where to find the Mooncloud Stone in DELTARUNE

The Mooncloud Stone is hidden behind the first boss fight (sort of) of DELTARUNE Chapter 3, where you get into a fight with Elnina and Lanino for stopping the flow of water to clog up and dry out the oasis. You can only get into this fight after Susie interacts with the Power Croissant and then rescues Casper from where he is trapped.

After this, Casper repays the favour by digging up a marked section in the desert to recover a key. In the process of doing so, he clogs up the water flow, drying up the oasis and enraging the two weather characters, Elnina and Lanino. Once the oasis is dried up, go over to the usual part of the desert where you first find them. This will automatically trigger a turn-based fight sequence.

Can you defeat Elnina and Lanino in DELTARUNE?

No, it’s impossible to defeat even one of them, let alone both of them together. The best bet is to try to survive through the rounds while constantly choosing to defend or act, while also dodging their attacks. You should also stock up on TVDINNERs that you can purchase from the shop in exchange for points. Every time you purchase a TVDINNER, the price increases when it’s next available in the shop.

After you survive five rounds, you will be presented with a choice to choose between whose attacks are better, Elnina’s and Lanino’s. Whoever you don’t choose here will leave the fight after the sixth round of attacks. After that, you will have to face a final round of attacks from whichever character you chose at the end of the fifth round.

Surviving the seventh round will result in Mr. Tenna intervening in the fight and ending it right there, as the character you chose after the fifth round starts missing the other weather character. Once this fight concludes, you receive the Mooncloud Stone and can unlock the gate to the Pyramid as long as you also have the three keys.

This entire process can be a tricky, and you might need a few tries to survive through the brutal attacks of Elnina and Lanino for seven whole rounds. I got it on my third try, and I can confidently say that the game only got more challenging and exciting after entering the Pyramid for the first Physical Challenge of the TV show.

Elden Ring Nightreign: Best Smithing Stone Locations

by admin June 3, 2025

With its blend of the soulslike and roguelike genres, Elden Ring Nightreign can be an overwhelming game to adjust to. It takes time to figure out how everything works and where to spend your time most wisely on the map.

The Most Sought After Elden Ring Sword Has A Storied History

One of the most important things to think about on each run is whether to upgrade a weapon you really like or hold out hope that a better, more powerful option will drop before the end of your run. Make the wrong choice, and you could be in a bad spot against the final boss of an expedition.

This is why you’ll sometimes want to visit an anvil near a merchant to level up a weapon you like with Smithing Stones. While you can’t get a weapon to Legendary rarity using this method, you can at least reach Epic rarity, making you a far more deadly foe to any future baddies you encounter. If that sounds good, here’s where to find Smithing Stones in Elden Ring Nightreign.

Smithing Stone [1] is a blue-colored stone used to upgrade a Common (white) rarity weapon to Rare (blue) rarity. These can be purchased from any merchant, found randomly in chests, or looted from corpses.

You’re likely to find at least a few of these stones during most expeditions, so unless you need them, be sure to share them with anyone who is falling behind in power early on.

Smithing Stone [2] is a purple-colored stone used to upgrade a Rare (blue) rarity weapon to Epic (purple) rarity. These can only be found by killing a specific boss enemy within one of the mines located somewhere on the map.

Screenshot: FromSoftware / Billy Givens / Kotaku

Each mine has a different boss type, such as an easy knight with a shield, an annoying Pumpkin Head enemy, or a bigass troll. Taking them down won’t take too long with a good team and a few levels under your belt, but the claustrophobic showdown can still lead to easy mistakes, so approach each of

Furthermore, remember that you’ll need to navigate the maze-like interior of the mine to come across these foes, so make sure you’ve got plenty of time to find them before setting off underground. If you get caught inside a mine when the rain comes through, you may be kissing your expedition goodbye. A purple greatsword isn’t going to do you much good if you’re dead, after all.

Elden Ring Nightreign is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PCs.
