It’s tough to keep tabs on the ever-changing crypto gaming space, thanks to the constant flow of news: everything from big game launches and fun degen experiments to token price swings and occasional project collapses. It’s a lot to follow.

Off the Grid NFT sales, Steam plans: Avalanche-powered battle royale shooter game Off the Grid is gradually transitioning its players from testnet to the GUNZ mainnet, enabling real cryptocurrency trading of in-game items for GUN tokens. Currently, only about 0.13% of the game’s 16.5 million players can access the mainnet marketplace, yet high-value trades are already occurring.

Notable recent sales include a Prankster tactical vest for $2,393, a ZipperMouth mask for $1,100, and various other rare items fetching hundreds to thousands of dollars. The most coveted items are ultra-rare Pioneer and Legacy weapons, which collectors are holding onto expecting future updates that could drive five-figure sales.

Off the Grid plans to expand to Steam in June, despite Steam’s 2021 ban on blockchain games. Gunzilla Games has yet to explain how this will work, though the game is also available on PlayStation and Xbox, which similarly restrict crypto features.

Ember Sword ends: Ember Sword, an Ethereum-based MMORPG, has shut down due to lack of funding. Developer Bright Star Studios, despite attracting prominent investors and gaming industry veterans as advisors, said it couldn’t secure continued financing in the current market climate.

The game launched during the 2021 metaverse boom, attracting nearly 35,000 players that pledged $203 million for its land sale, though the actual amount raised was apparently far less than that eye-popping figure. The game faced disappointing reception when it entered closed beta in July 2024, and its EMBER token has now crashed over 99% from peak levels.

This closure reflects a broader trend of crypto game shutdowns, with recent casualties including Nyan Heroes, Blast Royale, and Tatsumeeko all closing within the same period, plus other prominent 2025 closures including Deadrop and The Mystery Society. The wave of closures highlights the funding challenges facing blockchain gaming projects in the current market environment.

Every PC Handheld is a Steam Deck Now With SteamOS Support

Valve’s SteamOS is here to take the reins for your favorite mobile gaming machines. The company’s latest update enables anybody to load up Valve’s native handheld software onto (almost) any handheld PC, providing a much cleaner, console-like experience for a smaller screen. We’ve already seen how the change in operating system can increase gaming performance on familiar handhelds. At this rate, Valve is in a good position to give every PC—not just handhelds—the Steam Deck treatment.

SteamOS version 3.7.8 is finally out of beta. While it’s built with Steam Decks in mind, it also adds compatibility with the Lenovo Legion Go S. The extra step this takes is creating compatibility with any handheld PC running an AMD chipset. That includes devices like the original Lenovo Legion Go, as well as the Asus ROG Ally and Ally X. Valve doesn’t care about having its own proprietary software tied to hardware. It cares more about proliferating the Steam marketplace on every gaming machine, big or small.

Getting SteamOS installed on a separate handheld involves downloading the SteamOS recovery image. Valve offers instructions for how to do that on its website, which includes separate instructions for both the Legion Go and ROG Ally. While there’s a possibility you may be able to install SteamOS on other handhelds from smaller brands like Ayaneo and GPD, there are a few major handhelds missing from this list. Both the MSI Claw 7 and Claw 8 AI+ use an Intel chipset and run on Windows 11. Earlier this year, Valve told French tech outlet Frandroid it was working with Intel on SteamOS support, but the makers of Half-Life haven’t revealed when it might add that support. At least MSI’s upcoming Claw A8 with its AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme should be compatible when it finally sees the light of day.

Valve made it clear that SteamOS working on other handhelds isn’t as clean as it should be when it arrives on the Legion Go S. At least, Valve explained how its “Steam Deck Verified” will work on non-Steam Deck devices. Anything that is supported on SteamOS will get a “SteamOS Compatible” label, of which around 18,000 titles should work on handhelds. However, this won’t tell you if the game is built for a small screen or if it will run at a playable framerate.

SteamOS is based on Linux, though it currently isn’t built to run on any regular PC. There are certain functions, like the sleep and wake modes, that are tuned specifically for handheld. The recovery image released Friday won’t work on any full laptop or desktop. As for whether we’ll be able to turn any Windows PC into a newfangled “Steam Machine,” we may not have to wait too much longer. Valve has previously stated it was planning to ship “a general installer for SteamOS available for other manufacturers who wish to make a gaming device of their own.”

The days of Windows’ dominance of PC gaming may be coming to an end—or at least we may finally have some competition. Though we’ve already wrapped our mitts around the Windows version of Lenovo’s 8-inch single-body handheld, the SteamOS version is set to launch May 25 for $600 compared to the $730 version with Windows 11. Gizmodo will have its own review of the new edition of the Go S, and we’re hoping the new price point and potential performance uptick may finally offer an alternative to Valve’s own handheld. Windows-based handhelds have to run more background tasks compared to SteamOS, and that impacts performance. Microsoft has hinted its working on to make its operating system better on handheld, and it may even tie itself to Asus to launch an officially licensed Xbox handheld PC.

Even if Microsoft can make headway on a handheld mode, Valve has a head start. Steam is still the largest game distribution platform on PC, and—despite Game Pass’ reported growing popularity—Microsoft can’t come close to Valve’s overwhelming dominance. Either way, comfort and ease of use are the big reasons to make the switch. It’s not exactly seamless to get non-Steam games on Steam Deck, but if the alternative is navigating Microsoft’s increasingly ad-filled OS, most would choose the more-seamless option.

‘Off the Grid’ NFT Sales Heating Up as Avalanche Game Plots Expansion to Steam

Avalanche shooter Off the Grid has slowly started to shift its player base onto the GUNZ mainnet, where they can trade in-game items for GUN tokens. Even with approximately 0.13% of its player base now able to trade items, the marketplace is heating up, with some items going for thousands of dollars’ worth of crypto.

This all comes as the hit battle royale shooter plots its June expansion to PC platform Steam—a marketplace that banned blockchain games from the platform in 2021. That said, Off the Grid is also on PlayStation and Xbox, despite those platforms also apparently not allowing crypto features in games.

Up until this point, all console Off the Grid gamers have been playing the game solely on testnet, meaning that a test blockchain was running behind the scenes but that player-facing features were missing. As a result, they can’t trade their items on the marketplace for GUN tokens, potentially cashing out thousands of dollars for rare guns and more.

Theodore Agranat, director of Web3 at Off the Grid creator Gunzilla Games, told Decrypt this week that the migration to mainnet has first started for only PC players, but eventually all wallets will be on mainnet. How exactly this will work with crypto features has yet to be revealed, given that they’re prohibited by Steam and still M.I.A. in PlayStation and Xbox games.

Eagle-eyed players have spotted that the official Steam listing for Off the Grid claims the game will have an in-game marketplace, possibly referencing functional crypto features.

At the time of writing, there are just shy of 16.5 million wallets on the GUNZ testnet, a dedicated Avalanche L1 network created to support Off the Grid and potential future games. Meanwhile, there are just 21,000 players on the mainnet—approximately 0.13% of its player base.

Its no surprise that @playoffthegrid is the first game with blockchain components on consoles.

Even with such a small amount of players being able to transact on mainnet, already there have been some sizable trades. A Prankster tactical vest sold for $2,393 last week, a ZipperMouth mask was shifted for approximately $1,100, and a Convict chest rig traded hands for more than $500. 

These items are super rare, with the community believing that less than 300 ZipperMouth masks were ever minted, but Gunzilla “reserves the right” to reissue both ZipperMouths and Convict gear—Agranat explicitly told Decrypt that Convict gear will “absolutely” be released in the future. 

As such, skin collectors now see the Pioneer items—which were handed out in the first OTG Pro subscription and will not be re-released—as likely the most rare set in the game. Avid skin collector MoneyMagician reported that this has led to a lack of Pioneer items being listed on the marketplace.

This has also been the case for the Kestrel Legacy, a gun that had modified stats in the closed play test but were discontinued, and now is effectively an ultra-limited skin of the stock gun. There are other Legacy weapons, as well as Retro weapons, however the Kestrel Legacy is the most hyped due to its importance to the game’s lore.

MoneyMagician explained that players expect an update is coming for these weapons, which would include a reskin and a deepening of the lore behind the items. This update is what the skin collector anticipates will kick-start the first batch of five-figure NFT sales. For this reason, he said most collectors plan to hold onto their rarest items for now, expecting demand to explode.

“I think when we see sales of five figures, the FOMO will kick in hard, triggering a flywheel,” MoneyMagician told Decrypt. “[The update] would cause new waves of hype and attention onto them, and surely their price will rise along with market volume.”

Agranat declined to offer any additional information on the progression of this update, adding that the mainnet rollout is Gunzilla’s main priority for now.

For now, Prankster items are the most sought-after items despite being marginally less rare than the Pioneer set; Prankster was released in the second battle pass in the closed play test, while the Pioneer was the first one. MoneyMagician believes this is because, well, the Prankster set simply looks cooler.

Over the past 24 hours alone, according to OTG DegenRadar, two Prankster Woodpecker guns have sold for approximately $600 and $570 as well as a pair of Prankster shades for $467. On Tuesday, a Prankster Mask sold for $1,008. But none of those sales compare to the Prankster tactical vest, which commanded a whopping $2,393 last week.

“Rarity isn’t always what sticks, but [rather] what the community feels the most compelled with,” MoneyMagician explained. “The Pioneer set is green, a very showy color, making it hard to splash on just some shorts or a vest to make it look good. But the Prankster, it looks amazing. Gives this Joker vs Batman rivalry feel.”

In this new medieval city builder that launched on Steam today, build a sprawling town with the help of companions who level up and train their own apprentices

There’s a familiar start to City Tales: Medieval Era, a new city builder that launched on Steam today. You’ve got a few citizens that need housing and food and work, so you place a wood cutter’s camp near the trees, a gathering station near a berry patch, and a hunter’s cabin in the woods: stuff any city builder player has done plenty of times before.

But there are also some interesting twists on the city building formula. You don’t build homes for your citizens, you draw districts. Click on the map to create borders around the district, and your citizens will handle the rest: dividing up the district into plots and deciding where their houses go themselves. You can add other buildings to a district: a well, a market, a weaver’s shop, a lumber mill, but again, you don’t choose their precise location. Your wee little villagers handle that.

I like that approach. There’s something to be said for city builders where you’re 100% in charge and decide where every last structure is placed, but I also enjoy giving my citizens a bit of agency. It also tends to make a city feel like it’s growing organically.


You may like

Something else fun in City Tales: Medieval Era is the six named companions (you can choose their names if you wish) that you begin the game with. When you build a production quarry like a sawmill or a rock quarry, you assign one of these companions to run it. While they work and generate resources, they’ll level up, getting better at their jobs.

If you’re thinking, “Wait, I’m going to have way more than six production buildings, won’t I run out of available companions?” Don’t worry, because your companions are awesome. While they’re working and leveling up, they’re also training apprentices to take over for them. Once an apprentice is ready, you can assign your companion to another building, or keep them where they are to continue leveling up that skill until they’re a specialist.

Companions will even request certain jobs, from time to time. Judith, who I had working away making planks in my lumber mill, approached me to ask if she could work on the cattle farm I was planning to build. She’d prefer if it were a sheep farm, which made sense—Judith’s bio mentioned that she had a loyal sheep dog—but at the very least it sounded like she was more interested in farming than churning out planks all day.

This is a really nice touch: instead of parking randomized faceless NPCs into production buildings and forgetting about them for the rest of the game, it feels more like you have real people working to make your town successful, improving their skills, training other citizens, and even asking you for a choice of the jobs they do.

I’m not too far along in my own town yet, but I’m enjoying the organic approach to building and seeing my little companions grow their skills in City Tales: Medieval Era. It launched into early access on Steam today and is 10% off for the next two weeks.

Off The Grid, The Cyberpunk Battle Royale From District 9 Director Neill Blomkamp, Hits Steam Next Month

Gunzilla Games has announced that Off The Grid, its cyberpunk battle royale featuring a narrative by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, is coming to Steam in June. It launched into Early Access on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via the Epic Games Store last October, and now, it’s coming to Steam via Early Access as well.

As part of the Steam launch, Off The Grid will support full crossplay across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, allowing players to link up regardless of where they’re playing the game. VR bop Thrasher is heading to PC and Steam Deck

Thrasher is coming to flat screens, with a launch on Steam and Steam Deck scheduled for later in 2025. The new platform releases follow the VR game’s debut last summer on the Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro. Devs Brian Gibson and Mike Mandel, collaborating under the moniker Puddle, announced the new hardware additions in a fittingly surreal trailer today.

Both Gibson and Mandel have a history making music- and audio-driven interactive experiences. Mandel worked on Fuser, Rock Band VR and Fantasia: Music Evolved. Gibson’s previous project was the VR title Thumper, which bills itself with the tagline “a rhythm violence game.” (Imagine Tetris Effect if it was filled with aggression rather than transcendent joy. But in a really, really good way.)

Thrasher follows their existing legacy of immersive and unsettling games with its strange concept of a cosmic eel doing battle against a space baby, all set to a throbbing soundtrack. The addition of a non-virtual reality option is an exciting development for fans of the title, and it should be interesting to see how well the pair adapts their VR control scheme to gamepads and mouse/keyboard setups.
