How State Channels Can Reclaim a Decentralized Web

by admin September 25, 2025

More than ever we are at the mercy of platform-based giants like Google and Amazon, who act as digital landlords. We have become cloud-serfs, giving our data and producing trillions in value for algorithms we will never own.

Over 80% of Netflix viewing is dictated by its recommendation algorithm, and Amazon is far from a neutral marketplace — its matching engine gives preferential treatment to Amazon’s own products, and third-party sellers pay up to 50% of their revenue in fees for the privilege of competing for Amazon’s customers.

The promise of Web3 was a world beyond these digital landlords.

Reclaiming the Web3 thesis

Web3, as defined by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood in 2014, was a “post-Snowden web” — an antidote to centralized control built on peer-to-peer trust.

Gavin’s architectural vision has been twisted.

Ethereum created “more individual millionaires than any other project” and together with the rest of the ICOs wave shifted the focus from technological principles to financial gains.

Billions of dollars were channeled into speculative ICOs, up to 90% of which suffered major losses or became defunct within a year. This culminated in the 2021 bull market, where the crypto market cap briefly touched $3 trillion, and “Web3” was diluted into a catch-all marketing term to attract investors.

The mission of building a trustless, peer-to-peer internet would for a time being be buried under layers of hype.

Intermediaries no more

The power of centralized platforms stems from their role as a trusted intermediary.

You trust Amazon to handle payments and arbitrate disputes with the sellers; you trust Google to vet, rank and present information. This trust-as-a-service model creates a golden cage: the intermediary owns the rules, the data and a significant cut of the value exchanged.

Early Web3 attempted to solve this problem with on-chain transactions, where every interaction is a public, permanent record. But this is like asking a global commerce system to run a single, congested highway. Real-world commerce requires an infrastructure that can match its speed and complexity — not everything should be an on-chain transaction.

State channels present a superior infrastructure

Think of a state channel as a high-speed, private lane between two parties that bypasses the congested blockchain. Thousands of interactions — value transfers, data permissions and contract updates — can happen instantaneously and for free, with each step cryptographically signed.

The primary barrier to peer-to-peer digital commerce has been the risk that one party won’t fulfill their side of a deal. State channel (ERC-7824) design eliminates this risk without sacrificing efficiency. Before transacting, parties commit funds to an on-chain smart contract. This acts as a security deposit. If one party walks away, their committed on-chain funds ensure the other party is made whole. By settling profits and losses in near real-time, the system removes the need for a trusted central intermediary.

  • For commerce: instead of renting space on Amazon’s platform and paying up to 50% in fees, a buyer and seller open a direct channel governed by an impartial smart contract.
  • For data: instead of surrendering your life story to Google, you open a channel with an app, granting temporary, paid access to your data and revoking it at will.

This combination of on-chain security and off-chain efficiency enables a new creation: the autonomous enterprise. This is a system where business logic is encoded onto smart contracts, executed transparently and operating globally without the need for a traditional corporate structure.

Bitcoin removed the need to trust the government’s money printing. Ethereum removed the need to trust people to enforce contracts. Now it’s time to remove the need for people to blindly trust platforms.

PS5 State Of Play September 2025: Start Time, How To Watch, And What To Expect From Today’s Event

by admin September 24, 2025

It’s a big week for gaming with events like the Tokyo Game Show, but right now, it’s time for Sony to show what it has been cooking up with a new State of Play broadcast today, September 24. We’ve rounded up all the details for the livestream, popped in a few links for where to watch, when it starts, and what you can expect from it. On September 25, you can also tune in for an Xbox livestream, which will be held at a very early time.

How to watch the State of Play

State of Play will be streamed live on Sony’s YouTube and Twitch channels and will be broadcast in English.

State of Play start time

The State of Play broadcast begins today, September 24, at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET and will run for approximately 35 minutes.

  • 2 PM PT
  • 5 PM ET
  • 11 PM CEST
  • 6 AM JST (September 25)

What to expect

Sony says that the event will feature reveals and news from developers around the world on third-party games and indie titles. On the first-party side, Sony has confirmed that there’ll be an extended look at Housemarque’s next game, Saros, with five minutes of PS5-captured gameplay. You can also look forward to updates from some of the teams at PlayStation Studios, but beyond that, Sony is keeping quiet on the specific details here.

Ghost of Yotei launches on October 2, so we’re expecting to see a quick trailer for the game, and this would be a great time to reveal a few new characters for the upcoming superhero brawler from Arc System Works, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. Fans are also eager to see a fresh look at Insomniac’s Wolverine game, which was first announced way back in 2021. It has also been a year since Uncharted developer Naughty Dog revealed Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, so an update on that game wouldn’t be unwelcome.

If we’re digging into rumored reveals, then there might be some pleasant surprises today. Speculation about a new God of War game that will be smaller in scope and will see players return to ancient Greece has been doing the rounds for a while now, and everything from a Metal Gear Solid 4 port to a remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag have also been heavily rumored for a while now. The only way to find out will be to tune in today to see what the future of PlayStation looks like.

Ian Calderon Runs for California Governor, Vows to Make State ‘Undisputed Leader’ on Bitcoin

by admin September 24, 2025

In brief

  • Former California Assembly majority leader Ian Calderon has vowed to put Bitcoin on California’s balance sheet and back crypto payments for state programs as part of his bid for governor.
  • Calderon previously pushed blockchain policy through AB 2658 and worked with the Satoshi Action Fund.
  • Current bills, AB 1180 and AB 1052, stop short of allowing the state to hold Bitcoin directly.

Ian Calderon, a Democrat and former California Assembly majority leader, announced his candidacy for governor with a promise to put Bitcoin at the heart of state policy.

“California has always been a leader on technology. It’s time for us to get back to our roots and make California the undisputed leader on Bitcoin,” Calderon tweeted Tuesday.

California has always been a leader on technology. It’s time for us to get back to our roots and make California the undisputed leader on Bitcoin.

— Ian Calderon (@IanCalderon) September 23, 2025

Calderon has been a staunch advocate of the digital asset, confirming in a livestream earlier on the same day that, once elected, he would “make sure that we hold Bitcoin on our balance sheet” and support crypto payments for state programs.

In a separate campaign video, Calderon compared his positioning with the status quo.

“My generation pays bills on our phones, we send money to each other with Venmo and we save in Bitcoin,” Calderon said. “But the people running our government, they’re trying to use yesterday’s ideas to solve today’s problems, and it isn’t working.”

“Ambitious and daring”

Calderon’s statements are not without weight or work behind it.

Having left the Assembly in 2020 after three terms, he remained active in the policy space, including work with the Satoshi Action Fund in 2022 that explored legislation to consider Bitcoin as legal tender in the state. Calderon is also cited as a contributor in a 2020 roadmap developed by California’s Blockchain Working Group, a forum that produced policy recommendations on digital assets.

Much earlier in 2018, Calderon authored AB 2658, which created California’s Blockchain Working Group to evaluate the technology’s uses, risks, benefits, and legal implications for state government and businesses, define blockchain in statute, and develop policy recommendations including possible amendments to state law.

Calderon’s stance “shows that crypto has entered the mainstream, because candidates are now openly running on pro-crypto platforms and competing with one another,” Robert Boris Mofrad, co-founder of blockchain data storage firm Serenity, told Decrypt.

Yet whether the position is adopted or received “by the masses” would remain unclear, Mofrad noted. “But what we can understand is that crypto is now a serious part of the political conversation, one that began at the federal level with the idea of creating a reserve.”

“California putting Bitcoin on its balance sheet is quite an ambitious and daring position,” Mofrad said. “When it comes to a state such as California, the world’s fifth-largest economy, the situation is different.”

Because governments “usually treat Bitcoin as an intangible asset,” and must “record every loss in value but cannot really record gains,” such proposals make it “hard for a state treasury to manage responsibly,” he added.

California and crypto

Calderon’s campaign comes as California weighs incremental crypto legislation through two key legal frameworks.

AB 1180 would allow certain state agencies to pilot stablecoin payments for fees beginning in 2026, while AB 1052 brings crypto under the state’s unclaimed property law by requiring inactive custodial accounts to be transferred to the state and held in their original form.

Neither measure, however, would authorize California to purchase or hold Bitcoin directly, marking a clear distinction from Calderon’s proposal.

Class of 2027 safety Angelo Smith, the brother of Ohio State star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, has committed to the Buckeyes, a source confirmed to ESPN Sunday night.

The younger Smith is a 5-foot-10, 165-pound junior at Florida’s Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School. In addition to Ohio State, he held offers from Miami, Oklahoma State, Georgia State and Toledo. News of Smith’s pledge was first reported by Rivals.com.

Jeremiah was a three-time state champion at Chaminade-Madonna and landed with the Buckeyes in the 2024 class as one of the highest-ranked wide receiver prospects in the ESPN recruiting rankings era, which began in 2006.

A second-team All-American last fall, Jeremiah shattered Ohio State’s freshman receiving records with 76 catches for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns in a starring role on the Buckeyes’ 2024 national title team. He has logged 20 receptions for 315 yards with three receiving scores over the initial three games of his sophomore campaign in 2025.

Angelo followed in his brother’s footsteps at Chaminade-Madonna, where he was credited with 40 tackles, 11 pass break ups and three interceptions as a sophomore last fall.

He now lands as the third member of Buckeyes coach Ryan Day’s 2027 recruiting class. Five-star wide receiver Jamier Brown, the No. 2 prospect in the ESPN Junior 300, has been committed to Ohio State since November. Quarterback Brady Edmunds, who gave his pledge to the Buckeyes on Dec. 2, 2024, is ESPN’s second-ranked pocket passer in the cycle.

Ohio State holds 13 ESPN 300 pledges in the program’s 2026 recruiting class, which currently sits at No. 9 in ESPN’s national class rankings for the cycle. After a bye week in Week 4, the Buckeyes remained at No. 1 in the latest AP Top 25 on Sunday ahead of a Week 5 visit to Washington on Saturday.

State of Crypto: ETF Listings Became Easier

by admin September 21, 2025

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved a change to how companies can list and trade shares of exchange-traded funds, which should streamline the process for new products moving forward.

You’re reading State of Crypto, a CoinDesk newsletter looking at the intersection of cryptocurrency and government. Click here to sign up for future editions.

The narrative

A majority of commissioners at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission voted to streamline the process by which companies could list and trade shares of spot crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs), as well as other types of ETFs, through the approval of a generic listing standard.

Why it matters

For over a decade, the process to (try and) list a spot crypto exchange-traded fund was a 270-day process which usually ended in the ETF application being rejected. Last year, under former SEC Chair Gary Gensler, the regulator approved the first spot crypto ETFs, for Bitcoin and Ether. Over the past year, we’ve seen applications for a number of other assets.

Breaking it down

The idea that the SEC would create generic listing standards has been discussed for a few months, at least since the regulator paused the launch of Grayscale’s Digital Large Cap Fund earlier this year.

In July, the SEC approved GDLC to uplist as an ETF, but almost immediately paused the process. At the time, an individual familiar said the pause was likely intended to give the SEC enough time to develop those generic listing standards.

This past Wednesday, the SEC approved those standards, letting companies bypass the Exchange Act process if their proposed products meet the standards.

In a statement, SEC Chairman Paul Atkins said, “By approving these generic listing standards, we are ensuring that our capital markets remain the best place in the world to engage in the cutting-edge innovation of digital assets. This approval helps to maximize investor choice and foster innovation by streamlining the listing process and reducing barriers to access digital asset products within America’s trusted capital markets.”

A number of spot crypto ETF applications have been waiting for a final decision from the regulator, and it seems likely that a number of new products will come to market in the coming months.

Vitalik Buterin Opposes Ethereum State Expiry Innovation, Shares New Take

by admin September 19, 2025

Ethereum (ETH) founder Vitalik Buterin has shared his views on the ongoing debate about how to reduce the blockchain’s bloated data storage. Buterin’s view came as a response to support for a thread on X supporting state expiry.

Vitalik Buterin rejects expiry, proposes partial node solution

For context, “Ethereum’s state” refers to all the data needed to keep track of account balances, token ownership, smart contract storage and the rest. Over the years, the state has grown with the creation of more accounts and contracts.

The amount of resources required to maintain the state continues to soar, and it is causing serious challenges for the network’s stability. It will also impact the scaling of the network as data storage continues to grow.

According to a state expiry advocate, approximately 80% of these data are stale but still take up space. Hence, state expiry supporters propose that the old and unused part of the state should be removed after a period of time. This, they believe, would help Ethereum scale.

Don’t do state expiry, do partial state nodes imo

They’re functionally similar, but the latter does not require any consensus-layer logic and is much more flexible.

— vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) September 19, 2025

However, Buterin has kicked against this proposal. He suggests that instead of enforcing expiry at the consensus level, the system should allow nodes to choose to store only part of the state.

The Ethereum founder noted that state expiry will affect the whole network, but “partial nodes” do not. Yet, the network maintains the full state, which is more flexible and does not require Ethereum to change its core rules.

Ethereum’s long-term roadmap aligns with Buterin’s view

Vitalik Buterin has also recently shared his long-term vision for the blockchain, with emphasis on simplifying the ecosystem. He stressed that building a secure, future-proof network is key, while keeping it fast and responsive.

Buterin believes this can be achieved with quantum computing to ensure the speed of transactions is improved. This indicates that the founder’s “partial node” solution took into consideration the overall long-term vision for Ethereum.

This outlook is important for Ethereum, as competition with other layer-1 scaling solutions like Solana and BNB Chain is growing at a very fast pace. The implication of the scalable mainnet stack is such that it can support the RWA tokenization move and other demands from Wall Street investors.

Proponents like Tom Lee see strength in Ethereum’s design, which has helped it maintain 100% uptime since its launch. This strength, he believes, can help push the price of Ethereum to a new all-time high (ATH) above $10,000.

Kalshi Prediction Markets Are Pulling In $1 Billion Monthly as State Regulators Loom

by admin September 19, 2025

In brief

  • Kalshi reached $1 billion in monthly volume and now dominates 62% of the global prediction market industry, surpassing Polymarket’s 37% share.
  • Four states including Massachusetts have filed lawsuits claiming Kalshi operates as an unlicensed sportsbook, with Massachusetts seeking to permanently bar the platform.
  • Kalshi operates under federal CFTC regulation as a designated contract market, arguing this preempts state gambling laws that require separate licensing.

Prediction market Kalshi just topped $1 billion in monthly volume as state regulators nip at its heels with lawsuits alleging that it’s an unregistered sports betting platform.

“Despite being limited to only American customers, Kalshi has now risen to dominate the global prediction market industry,” the company said in a press release. “New data scraped from publicly available activity metrics details this rise.”

The publicly available data appears on a Dune Analytics dashboard that’s been tracking prediction market notional volume.

The data show that Kalshi now accounts for roughly 62% of global prediction market volume, Polymarket for 37%, and the rest split between Limitless and Myriad, the prediction market owned by Decrypt parent company Dastan. Trading volume on Kalshi skyrocketed in August, not coincidentally at the start of the NFL season and as the prediction market pushes further into sports.

But regulators in Maryland, Nevada, and New Jersey have all issued cease-and-desist orders, arguing Kalshi’s event contracts amount to unlicensed sports betting. Each case has spilled into federal court, with judges issuing preliminary rulings but no final decisions yet.

Last week, Massachusetts went further, filing a lawsuit that calls Kalshi’s sports contracts “illegal and unsafe sports wagering.”

The 43-page Massachusetts lawsuit seeks to stop the company from allowing state residents on its platform—much the way Coinbase has had to do with its staking offerings in parts of the United States. Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell contends that there’s no difference between Kalshi’s prediction market and a “sportsbook,” the likes of which are licensed, taxed, and regulated at the state level.

The state also alleges that Kalshi is skirting other rules it would have to follow if it were categorized as a sportsbook. The prediction market currently allows anyone 18 or older to trade on the platform. In Massachusetts, the legal age for online sports betting is 21.

“Kalshi offers its users a fair, transparent, federally-regulated, and nationwide marketplace,” a Kalshi spokesperson told Decrypt. “Rather than engage in dialogue with Kalshi as many other states have done, Massachusetts is trying to block Kalshi’s innovations by relying on outdated laws and ideas.”

Many well-known sports betting platforms—like FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM—are already registered and pay the state’s 20% tax on gross gaming revenue. Retail sports betting, which means being in-person at a casino, is taxed at a 15% rate.

Kalshi doesn’t currently have a state license in Massachusetts or in any other state. And the lawsuit isn’t an invitation for the company to submit an application. It’s seeking to have Kalshi “permanently” barred.

For now, the company is operating in Massachusetts and across the U.S. on the premise that it’s a federally regulated designated contract market, or DCM, under the Commodities Futures Trading Commission.

The CFTC list of companies with DCM licenses also includes Aristotle, the company behind soon-to-relaunch PredictIt; Railbird, which is rumored to be discussing an acquisition by DraftKings; LedgerX, which was acquired by FTX in 2021 and then sold during its bankruptcy at a massive loss in 2023; and QCX, which was acquired by Polymarket in a $112 million deal earlier this year.

Kalshi and other markets following in its footsteps argue that a federal license to offer events contacts, as regulated by the CFTC under the Commodity Exchange Act, is enough and should, in effect, preempt any state law that would run counter. For now, Kalshi and other prediction markets are pressing forward, and with great success as the prediction space heats up.

But depending on how things go in courtrooms at the state level, a final resolution could be left to the Supreme Court.
