When Darth Vader’s lightsaber goes up for auction this week, all eyes will be on the price tag. Memorabilia vendor Propstore estimates the saber (used in the “Star Wars” films “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi”) could fetch between $1 million and $3 million. For collectors, it’s a holy grail artifact. For one bidder, it may be the ultimate trophy. But for everyone else? The moment the gavel falls, the story is over.

Unless, of course, the real story isn’t the sale itself, but the market that could form around it.



The Auction Is Just the Beginning

The sale of Vader’s saber is more than a collectible transfer. It’s a signal. A data point that tells collectors, auction houses, and investors what cultural artifacts are worth.

But it’s a signal that only arrives once, at the closing hammer. Until then, we’re left with speculation: Will it break $3 million? Will it set a new record for a “Star Wars” prop? How much cultural cachet does Vader command compared to Luke or Han? These are the kinds of questions prediction markets are built to answer.

Turning Belief Into a Trade

In a prediction market, an auction like this becomes a tradeable event.

Imagine markets for:

  • “Will Darth Vader’s lightsaber sell above $3M?”
  • “Will it beat the record for most expensive ‘Star Wars’ collectible?”

Anyone, anywhere, could back their conviction with real money.

A film historian who knows the scarcity of screen-matched props. A collector who’s tracked bidding trends across decades. A casual fan who is convinced a billionaire will need to own this.

Instead of waiting for the outcome, and reading a headline, they can trade the odds of it happening and turn passive content consumption into active participation.

One Object, Infinite Markets

The key difference is this:

  • The lightsaber is finite. One object, one buyer.
  • The event market is infinite. Thousands of contracts, tens of thousands of participants.

The saber sale will redistribute wealth between one seller and one buyer. The market around it could redistribute wealth across an entire ecosystem of traders.

In dollar terms, the physical sale may generate $3 million. The parallel market could generate 10x that volume, as contracts are created, traded, and repriced in real time.

The Rise of Derivatives on Culture

This is exactly the frontier we are exploring at Myriad: a derivatives marketplace for information.

Just like Wall Street offers futures on oil or indices on tech stocks, Myriad lets users trade futures on cultural events. Auctions, elections, sports outcomes, policy decisions… all become liquid markets.

That changes both the scale and scope of participation. The gavel may fall for a single bidder, but thousands can still have financial exposure to the outcome through derivative contracts.

There’s another layer, too.

The auction produces one data point: the final hammer price. The prediction market produces a living dataset:

  • How expectations shifted over time.
  • How rumors and provenance updates moved the odds.
  • How consensus or polarization developed in the crowd.

For collectors, auction houses, and insurers, that’s far more valuable than the single figure in the catalog. It’s an x-ray of market sentiment, an epistemic dataset about what people believed and how they priced that belief.

Knowledge as Capital

The deeper implication is this: prediction markets turn knowledge into capital.

Historically, information has been hard to monetize unless you were a journalist, an analyst, or an insider. You needed a platform or an audience and the ability (or desire) to extract from them.

Now, whether you’re a “Star Wars” historian, a quant, or just a fan with a hunch, you can own the upside of being right. Beliefs become financial assets and ideas become tradeable.

Why It Matters Beyond “Star Wars”

If this sounds like a novelty, remember: It’s not about lightsabers. It’s about the financialization of information itself. Every high-profile cultural event can spawn parallel markets that are:

  • Transparent: providing real-time odds instead of presale guesses.
  • Democratic: open to anyone, not just insiders.
  • Scalable: capable of generating more liquidity than the underlying event.

From auctions to elections, sports, or climate, prediction markets create a meta-layer of finance where beliefs are surfaced, priced, and tradable.

A Saber or a Signal?

When the gavel falls this week, one collector will own a piece of cinematic history. But the bigger story might be what happens outside the auction room, where thousands more could have owned the event itself.

A $3 million lightsaber sale proves the cultural weight of “Star Wars.” A liquid prediction market on that auction proves something bigger: that the future of finance may not be built just on oil, gold, or equities, but on information, attention, and maybe even on something as simple and intangible as belief.

NetEase shut down studio of Fallout and Star Wars alumni who were making an online sci-fi action game

NetEase have shut down T-Minus Zero Entertainment, a studio founded in 2023 by former BioWare developer and Star Wars: The Old Republic executive producer Rich Vogel.

The studio had been working on an online multiplayer sci-fi action game, with contributions from a number of ex-BioWare and Bethesda staff including Fallout 76 design lead Mark Tucker and senior producer Scott Malone. However, that project and T-Minus Zero Entertainment’s on-going existence are not a good fit for “current market conditions”.

Vogel announced the end of NetEase’s partnership with T-Minus in a LinkedIn post on 26th August. Game Developer have now obtained confirmation that the studio has been closed down, in the absence of other funding.

“Every journey has its twists and turns, and ours with NetEase is coming to an end,” Vogel writes in the LinkedIn statement. “We deeply appreciate NetEase for providing us with both ample runway and support – from helping us find potential investors to giving us the time and budget to develop our game into a fully playable hands-on demo. It has generated a lot of interest. However, despite this progress, current market conditions have prevented us from securing the funding we need at this time.”

Vogel goes on to celebrate his team’s “dedication and passion” adding that “now may not be the best time to seek funding given today’s climate, but our playable demo proves our potential to develop something fresh and exciting that will resonate with players for years.”

As Game Developer report, senior NetEase staff have commented on the post to praise the bygone studio’s work, with former NetEase president of global investments and partnerships Simon Zhu commenting that the prototype “delivers [the] great fantasy of fighting against 15th floor kaiju to protect the city you care about” while NetEase head of brand/publishing for North America & Europe Cisco Maldonado called it a “super great concept and [in my opinion] a solid market fit”.

Approached for comment, a NetEase spokesperson told Game Developer that “this decision was made with careful consideration, as we have been inspired by our partnership with the studio and their bold vision. However, we have had to reassess our business priorities and are now working closely with the studio to provide support and explore next steps.”

NetEase have been cutting staff and projects recently, after investing in several studios founded by big names in the triple-A business. Last November, they called time on Worlds Untold, a studio founded by former Mass Effect writer Mac Walters. In January this year, they did likewise for Jar Of Sparks, the studio founded by former Halo Infinite head of design Jerry Hook. In February, they trimmed down the Marvel Rivals development team and made layoffs at Liquid Swords, the studio founded by Avalanche co-founder Christofer Sundberg.

Best of luck to all the former T-Minus Zero Entertainment employees now looking for a safe port.

Star Wars Outlaws Out On Switch 2 In Days And Footage Is Being Kept Secret

Star Wars Outlaws is coming to Switch 2 in just a few days. It’s Ubisoft’s first big port for Nintendo’s new handheld hybrid. So why isn’t the company talking more about its 2024 blockbuster coming to the best-selling console of 2025? Maybe because it’s the latest Switch 2 port to reportedly run less than great.

Star Wars Outlaws, a stealth adventure about gangsters and bounty hunters on the fringes of the Galactic Empire, is currently the 10th best-selling game on the Switch 2 eShop thanks to digital pre-orders, but you won’t find it anywhere on the show floor at PAX West this weekend. Despite stations for fans to try big ports like Elden Ring and Borderlands 4 on Nintendo’s new hardware, a demo of Star Wars Outlaws was only playable behind closed doors, according to YouTube channel GVG‘s new hands-on video.

Even worse, the outlet was prohibited from sharing any direct capture footage of Star Wars Outlaws running on Switch 2. Over-the-shoulder recording wasn’t allowed either. The demo GVG tested included an early section inside of a Star Destroyer and a ship fight in space. The frame rate often appeared to dip below 30fps while the visual quality varied from good to unimpressive depending on the scene. And GVG didn’t even get to try any of the open-world sections down on planets.

There have been some potential red flags around Star Wars Outlaws‘ performance on Switch 2 for a while now. At a Partner Nintendo Direct earlier this summer, Ubisoft only showcased the game for two minutes, and most of that was developers (Ubisoft Red Lynx is doing the port) talking into the camera rather than direct feed of gameplay. What little snippets the publisher did share didn’t look outstanding either. Digital Foundry pointed to some impressive lighting effects at the time, but was left mostly with concerns about just how downgraded it would be from the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions.

How will Assassin’s Creed Shadows run on Switch 2?

While not officially confirmed, reading between the lines of recent Ubisoft earnings calls leaves the strong impression that Star Wars Outlaws isn’t the only current-gen exclusive the company is planning to port to Switch 2. Assassin’s Creed Shadows sounds destined to arrive eventually as well. Has Ubisoft been investing more resources in optimizing that port, knowing it’s the bigger franchise, at the cost of quietly leaving Outlaws to flounder a second time (remember, Shadows was originally delayed precisely because of Outlaws launch struggles last year)?

Right now, there are basically two buckets of third-party Switch 2 ports. One includes Cyberpunk 2077 and Street Fighter 6, which rarely remind you that you’re playing on weaker hardware than what the games were originally designed for. The other includes stuff like Hitman World of Assassination, which despite being serviceable, often feels like a noticeable downgrade (though things improved just this week with a capped frame rate option).

Elden Ring, which reportedly ran like goop when you hit the open-world sections, and now Star Wars Outlaws appear to be in that second bucket as well. Bandai Namco tried to prevent people from filming footage of FromSoftware’s first Switch 2 game at Gamescom 2025 as well, though that game at least doesn’t have a release date yet. Unless a day-one patch or series of other upgrades can improve Outlaws on Switch 2, there’s now a question of whether a potential Shadows port will fall into the “meh” column of ports as well.

You probably couldn’t have predicted this one. Of all the things Star Trek that could be a game, it’s 24-years-gone series Star Trek: Voyager that’s getting the treatment with a game that’ll put you in charge of the lost ship’s journey home.

Star Trek: Voyager – Across the Unknown is described as a “a story-driven survival strategy game.” Your job is to manage the ship, its resources, and its path through the far-off Delta Quadrant on a long trip back to home space.

You’ll choose which crew members do what tasks based on their special abilities and unique skills, find resources to repair the damaged Voyager, choose where the ship will travel, and research technologies that can strengthen your ship and boost chances of survival.

“Did you ever wonder what would have happened had Captain Janeway decided differently? If an important crew member had followed a different path? Or what the outcome would have been had the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager embraced Borg technology to increase their chances of survival?,” says Across the Unknown’s Steam page.

That emphasis on “What If?” stories really makes this an interesting one. Will it rerun a ton of familiar plot beats from the series that fans already know, but let you change how things went by making different choices? That seems to be the implication.

“The game features rogue-like elements,” say the developers, “so in each run you will encounter different situations and even iconic characters might meet an early end if you don’t react accordingly.”

A video clip from a Detroit event has been stirring discussion across social media platforms, showing Grammy-nominated rapper Big Sean urging his audience to take a chance on cryptocurrencies. The moment occurred at the Stand With Crypto event in Michigan for its digital asset community, where Big Sean delivered an energetic show. 

However, a call from Big Sean himself to invest in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ripple captured even more attention among attendees.

A Clear Message From American Rap Star Big Sean

The video, now making rounds on X, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, shows Big Sean addressing the crowd in direct terms. “It’s not too late. Invest in crypto right now. Tonight, if you can. Do that tonight; you’re going to get a return from it. Bitcoin is a good one, Ethereum, Ripple. Invest in that shit, I’m telling y’all right now. This is a free flip. Do it tonight; it’s about to go up,” he said. 

His words drew loud reactions from the audience, many of whom cheered as he listed the leading cryptocurrencies. The event was mostly filled with crypto investors, and attendees explored an NFT gallery and enjoyed the crypto carnival. 

Ripple’s mention on stage stood out because XRP has long been tied to financial institutions, central banks, and cross-border payment systems rather than hype and music culture. Hearing its name echoed from a Detroit stage by a mainstream artist shows just how much the XRP price has grown in recent months. 

Many XRP proponents can argue that the cryptocurrency now belongs in the same conversation as Bitcoin and Ethereum, particularly after its rise in recent months to secure the position of the third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization

What may have started as a normal statement from Big Sean quickly grew into one of the most shared moments from the entire event. This shows the type of influence celebrity endorsements have on crypto adoption.

Trend Of Celebrity Crypto Advocacy

Celebrity entertainers and athletes have steadily ventured into the world of cryptocurrency over the past decade. Notably, the movement reached its peak during the 2021 bull run when countless celebrities aligned themselves with cryptocurrencies and NFTs.

Although the wave of crypto projects endorsed by celebrities has slowed down in the current market cycle, high-profile endorsements are still influential. Particularly, the launch of Donald and Melania Trump meme coins provides the best examples of how far digital assets have reached. 

Another notable example is Elon Musk, who is known for his comments on social media endorsing multiple cryptocurrencies. Adding to this mix is Kanye West, who recently entered the sector by launching his own official meme coin called YZY. This has seen a mix of reactions from crypto investors, with some critics calling it another celebrity-backed gimmick.

Avengers: Doomsday star says cast has “smaller roles” to make space for new characters

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Tenoch Huerta has been speaking about his participation in Avengers: Doomsday, saying the dynamic is different as the film endeavours to make room for “twentysomething characters.”

Tenoch Huerta made his MCU debut as Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The character came into conflict with Shuri, before finding common ground at the end of the movie, and making a truce.

But with no more Black Panther in the pipeline at present, it looked like that might be the last we saw of the Talokan king.

Then in March 2025, Marvel did a five-hour livestream in which cast members of Avengers: Doomsday were revealed via director’s chairs, and Huerta was one of the 26. Though he only found that out hours beforehand…

Speaking on late-night show La Resolana Con El Capi, and as reported by Deadline, Huerta said: “We were waiting on the green light and my agents in the U.S. were not sure about the news.

“They practically told us around 12 at night, and at 5:30 in the morning, the livestream started, and they told us, ‘Hey, the news is about to drop.’ It was surprising and it was cool.”

He added that the shoot has contrasted with his work on the Black Panther sequel, as “the dynamic has been different.”

Huerta explains: “There are twentysomething characters involved in the story, which means we are each going to have smaller roles because there needs to be space for all the characters and all the universes.

“This makes it a much more simpler role, in terms of time and energy of making a film like this.”

No Man’s Sky Goes Full Star Trek In Massive Ship Customization Update

No Man’s Sky‘s next big content drop is here and it continues the sci-fi survival sim’s journey to give players more tools than ever to play around with. Called Voyagers, update 6.0 will let fans make custom starships with enough space to walk around in them and crew them with friends. Whether you want to recreate the Normandy from Mass Effect or pretend you’re smuggling Dilithium across Federation borders in Star Trek, it’s another impressive step forward for a game that originally launched on so many broken promises.

No Man’s Sky: Voyagers arrives after a year of major reworks to the game that overhauled how its worlds are procedurally generated and rendered. Now Hello Games has retrofitted the way players will travel between them by introducing starship customization that sounds essentially like base-building for zooming around the galaxy. And unlike the traditional fighter-style craft players have been exploring planets with up to this point, these new ships will be much bigger.

They’re being called Corvettes and will come complete with hulls, wings, landing gear, cockpits, engine parts, thrusters, and all of the necessary living arrangements for the crew. Those include sleeping quarters, med-bays, war rooms, teleporters, and more. Players can choose how to design their new ships and what to include, whether you want to build a warship or something more modest and cozy.

“Adding bigger weapons to your Corvette increases your firepower,” studio director Sean Murray wrote in a press release. “Add sleeping quarters and a mission radar, and you are ready to welcome a crew of friends on board. Add a mission radar and you are ready to adventure. A teleporter and you have an away team. Or just add a window…and suddenly there are these special moments, watching as the universe flies by outside at warp speed.”

Players who are just starting out won’t unlock Corvettes until a bit into No Man’s Sky, but a special Corvette expedition added in the update is meant to help streamline the process so players can get it started as soon as possible. You can even have players flying multiple Corvettes over a planet together. Murray promises you can skydive between them. And of course all of this ongoing work in No Man’s Sky cross-pollinates with Hello Games’ upcoming fantasy survival sim Light No Fire. We still have no date on when that will be ready, but it sounds like it’ll benefit from all of No Man’s Sky‘s improvements rather than starting over from scratch once it arrives.

Peek Inside the Sacred Jedi Texts From ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

The Star Wars sequel trilogy remains a hot topic for Star Wars fans, young and old. No matter where you stand on the three films, though, one thing we can probably all agree on is the one prop from the series that we’d most like to hold in our hands and explore: the sacred Jedi texts.

Revealed in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, the Jedi texts are stored on Ahch-To and watched over by Luke Skywalker after he leaves the Jedi order and the Force behind him. They’re the last remnants of the teachings and history of the Jedi way, something that has long been discussed and battled over in the course of the series. Luke himself remains unclear about their teachings and, despite trying to destroy them, they end up in Rey’s possession by the end of the film. What’s next for those texts, we do not yet know but we now can finally get a good glimpse inside them.

The official Star Wars website recently posted about the props that were created for the films. Forty different books were designed and conceived, from which director Rian Johnson selected 10 for the actual movie. Of those, only one gets shown off in the film, and that book itself took about two weeks to make. It not only includes the page we briefly see in the film but several others too. Pages that existed on set but were never seen. Until now.

The prop clearly still exists, so the question then becomes, will we see it again? Will these texts, which we last saw in Rey’s possession, play a role in how she aims to start a New Jedi Order? Or will Rey’s New Jedi Order go against the teachings in these books? Those clearly didn’t work, as now, almost every Jedi is extinct.

‘Star Trek’ Journalists, Ranked

The potential for what journalism looks like in Star Trek is a heady idea that’s been around as long as the series itself. What does reporting the news look like in utopia? What does it mean that the Federation has its own news networks, alongside a host of interstellar media organizations? What does freedom of information mean in a universe that has Starfleet? And yet, we’ve actually had very few characters appear in the series as fully dedicated journalists and reporters.

That changed a little with this week’s episode of Strange New Worlds, “What Is Starfleet?”, which, well… okay, yeah. It was pretty atrocious journalism. But Mynor Lüken’s Beto Ortegas joins a rarefied crew of professional media in Star Trek to have significant roles in the series, for better or worse. So speaking of for better, at least, let’s take a look at who’s got their press hat on tightest in the arena of boldly going.

9) Beto Ortegas

Again, you should probably just read our recap of “What Is Starfleet?” to see why Beto is ranked here. There’s certainly an argument to be made that not necessarily all documentary filmmakers are journalists, but it’s pretty clear that Beto was, at least, trying to engage in investigative journalism in documenting life aboard Enterprise and its reflection of the Federation’s role. Emphasis on the trying there, because what he did really, really sucked!

8) Gannet

On the one hand, Gannet probably shouldn’t be on here. Her job as a journalist was in fact deep cover for her real work with Starfleet Intelligence during the events of Enterprise‘s fourth season—work that got her accused by Archer of potentially being a member of the human-supremacist group Terra Prime. On the other, while ostensibly acting as a journalist, Gannet did both wiretap translator devices at a conference to record attending delegates and, through Mayweather, did ultimately engage in a sexual relationship with a source while purportedly working on a story about the NX-01. Slightly different realm of ethics for an intelligence operative, but definitely not ideal for her cover story in journalism.

7) Natima Lang

Better known for her appearance in the Deep Space Nine episode “Profit and Loss” as a then-current professor of political ethics on Cardassia (and in actuality a radical member of the dissident movement fleeing the wrath of the Cardassian high command), Lang was previously a correspondent for the Cardassian Communication Service during the occupation of Bajor, working directly on Terok Nor. Unfortunately, it’s during that assignment that she met and fell in love with Quark, who promptly used her press access codes to directly steal money from the Cardassian government.

Good for Quark (although he was obviously not stealing from the Cardassian occupation forces for altruistic reasons), but deeply embarrassing for Lang.

6) Neelix

Neelix briefly dabbles in the world of independent journalism early on in Voyager, when he attempts to kickstart a daily news program aboard the ship in “Investigations” called A Briefing With Neelix. Although Neelix does attempt to rigorously defend his hard pivot from general interest puff pieces to investigative journalism when he breaks the news that Tom Paris had purportedly been removed from the ship for collaborating with the Kazon, even when pressured by Tuvok to drop his investigation, ultimately he does end up collaborating with Captain Janeway and Tuvok to allow A Briefing With Neelix to be used as bait to catch the real collaborator, Michael Jonas. Can you be state media if the state is a single starship?

5) Sylvia Ront

Do you know how bad everyone below Sylvia Ront on this list has to be at journalism to not even get past a character with a handful of minutes of screentime who simply just reads the broadcast news?

4) Jake Sisko

On the one hand, Jake gets away with an awful lot of his mistakes as a reporter for the Federation News Service on account of being a literal teenager on the front lines of one of the deadliest interstellar conflicts ever seen by the Federation. Hell, he reports from aboard the Defiant during military engagements and even willingly stays behind on the Dominion-occupied DS9 to report the stories of what is really going on there when the Federation is forced to abandon the station, even if his stories are ultimately censored from distribution by the Dominion.

On the other hand, kid or otherwise, Jake is kind of just not that great at his job. For one of his first stories, about a potential non-aggression agreement between Bajor and the Dominion, Jake sources key contextual information—that Captain Sisko, and through him the Federation, is against the pact—from offhand conversations with his father, who was unaware that his son had joined the Federation News Service. Ben shouldn’t have been discussing Starfleet matters with his son, arguably, but Jake also should’ve reached out to his dad as commander of DS9 and Starfleet’s primary representative for comment officially, instead of simply going “the source is literally my dad.” Speaking of that, what he should’ve done was have the story assigned to another reporter, given his direct personal relationship to important figures involved in it!

3) Marci Collins

Marci Collins—the late ’90s 3 Action News reporter we see in Voyager‘s Y2K-era flashback “11:59″—doesn’t really get to do much other than be a consistent voice reporting on the events the audience is watching unfold in the episode, as we see the story of how one of Janeway’s ancestors was convinced to close their bookstore and make way for the construction of the Millennium Gate, the first self-sustaining civic environment, a predecessor to future interstellar colonies. But the fact that the simple act of being a journalist who does their job completely perfunctorily makes her one of the best Star Trek has put on screen speaks to the franchise’s peculiar history with the press.

We’re ranking her above Ront simply because she’s on screen a bit more.

2) Richter

A reporter for the Federation News Network who appears in Picard‘s very first episode, we as an audience are kind of meant to see Richter in part as a bit of an antagonist: she agrees to a very strict set of conditions in order to get access to interview the retired Jean-Luc, including the stipulation that she not ask questions about why he left Starfleet. She does so anyway, leading to Picard having an angry outburst on camera and storming off mid-interview, reflecting very badly on himself in the process.

So sure, boo, the episode frames it as our beloved hero is seemingly ambushed and made to feel bad by a “mean” reporter. But even putting aside whether or not Richter should’ve agreed to the interview on the basis of controlling what questions she can ask, she did ask a perfectly reasonable question that was of considerable public interest to a person who still wielded a great deal of political power. She wasn’t particularly combative with him; she just didn’t offer a softball interview either. Sometimes journalism is about the risk of making people uncomfortable by asking the right questions!

1) Victoria Nuzé

The reporter behind the exposé “Starfleet’s Shame” that uncovered the misconduct (misconstrued or otherwise) by Captain Freeman aboard the Cerritos during the events of Lower Decks season three’s climax, Nuzé is shown to be an incredibly rigorous reporter, especially in light of Captain Freeman’s panicked overreaction to her presence aboard the ship. Her extensive report is not only built on interviewing tons of sources, but also her getting around Freeman’s attempts to blacklist certain personnel from talking to the press (mainly Mariner) speaks to her diligence as a reporter.

Also, she’s literally named “Nuzé.” Talk about the perfect person for the job.

Daedalic reveal story-driven Star Trek: Voyager strategy game in which you can betray everything Janeway ever stood for

Oi oi, where my Janeway fans at? Where my Parisians and my Torresians? Can I get a whoop, whoop for Chakotay? A high five for Seven of Nine? Daedalic have announced Star Trek: Voyager – Across the Unknown, a “story-based survival strategy game” adaptation of the loneliest of the classic Treks. Created by developers gameXcite, who I may yet forgive for capitalising their name that way, it asks you to “manage systems and crew, engage in diplomacy, navigate difficult moral decisions, and face the unknown”. It’s got a cutaway dollhouse spaceship and a HUD made up to resemble a Star Trek bridge display. Also, Ensign Harry Kim is here! He wants orders. Kim, your orders are to roll that trailer.

If you’re like me, you are presently being torn in half by the contrast between your apathy for yet another set of “roguelike elements”, and your enthusiasm for the what-if scenarios. Maybe an episode where Janeway becomes the Borg Queen? Maybe the Doctor gets to be captain? Maybe Neelix undergoes some kind of Garrus-style reinvention as a badass with hairy ears? All that may have actually happened, I can’t remember. Some more from the Steam page:


Take a risky approach or play it safe. Be diplomatic or let phasers do the talking. Research technologies that were shunned by the crew. But: Be prepared to deal with the consequences of your actions! The game features rogue-like elements, so in each run you will encounter different situations and even iconic characters might meet an early end if you don’t react accordingly.


There’s a base-building component: you’ll add facilities to Voyager’s innards as you go, in the manner popularised by XCOM: Enemy Unknown. I’m less sold on the tiddly, top-down spaceship movement within solar systems, which recalls Mass Effect at its dinkiest and makes the Delta Quadrant seem as strange and enveloping as Center Parcs. But I do like the sound of the away missions, in which you get to handpick a team of named faces and redshirts.

“A team with skills that complement each other might be best suited for the task, but it is up to you to call the shots,” the developers comment. “Minimize the risk for the team’s members, rush headlong into danger, or take a scientific approach – you decide.” All this and, of course, ship-to-ship combat, in which you’ll assign crews to stations and target individual systems.


There’s no release date. In case it wasn’t obvious already, my excitement about this game is at least 80% nostalgia spike, with another 5% consisting of furtive teenage memories of certain saucy fan fiction websites. Finally, we can make Paris and Chakotay bone. The developers don’t have much form for space sims: going by their website, they have hitherto specialised exclusively in Asterix comic adaptations. I guess a starship is a kind of Gallic village? Let’s finish off by watching the original Voyager intro again.
