Proton Mail’s redesigned mobile app is built for speed

by admin September 25, 2025

If you use Proton Mail on your phone, things are about to pick up. The company is rolling out new apps for Android and iOS. The updated mobile applications are rebuilt from the ground up with a “cleaner, faster and more private experience.” Proton first announced in April that it was working on the revamp.

The company says the new Proton Mail lets you scroll, archive and reply twice as fast as before. It also now supports an offline mode, allowing you to read, write and organize messages while away from the internet. A redesigned interface aims for simpler navigation, with areas like the composer button now sitting within easier reach.

The iOS and Android apps, while still native to their respective platforms, now share a common codebase. Proton says they share 80 percent of their code. This should enable faster development and near-simultaneous future updates.

Product lead Anant Vijay Singh credited the update to Proton’s community and business model. “The new Proton Mail mobile apps reflect this feedback and show what is possible if you build an email app without the constraints imposed by trying to monetize user data, allowing for a cleaner, faster, and more private experience,” he said.

Proton has had a full plate lately. The company is working on an upcoming overhaul of Proton Calendar with similar user experience upgrades. This summer, it even joined the chatbot fracas with Lumo, which it believes can carve a niche as a more ethical AI assistant.

The Proton Mail updates begin rolling out today in the App Store and Play Store.

Solana Approves Alpenglow Upgrade to Boost Network Speed

by admin September 7, 2025

The Solana network has voted to approve the new Alpenglow consensus protocol. The proposal, known as SIMD-0326, passed with 98.27% support, far exceeding the required 66.67% threshold.

According to a post by Solana Status on X, “The community governance process for SIMD-0326: Alpenglow is complete. The proposal has passed: 98.27% voted Yes, 1.05% voted No, 0.69% voted Abstain. 52% of stake cast a vote.” This shows strong validator participation and overwhelming support for the changes.

Alpenglow Introduces Votor and Rotor

The Alpenglow protocol, developed by infrastructure firm Anza, will replace Solana’s current systems: Proof-of-History and TowerBFT. Currently, Proof-of-History timestamps transactions to keep them in order, while TowerBFT manages the voting process for consensus.

The upgrade unveiled on Monday introduces two powerful components — Votor and Rotor. Votor will slash transaction finality times from over 12 seconds to just 150 milliseconds, giving users near-instant confirmations.

Rotor, which will launch later, will reduce data transfers between validators, making it ideal for high-demand sectors like DeFi and blockchain gaming.

Kyle Samani, Managing Partner at Multicoin Capital, highlighted the importance of the upgrade. “Alpenglow is the most significant rewrite of the Solana protocol to date. Its passage today paves the way for faster processing and finality, and for internet capital markets to emerge,” he said.

He added, “Alpenglow will be an important mile marker on our way to 1 million transactions per second.”

Market Impact and Next Steps

As Solana prepares to roll out the upgrade, its price has seen slight movement. According to CoinMarketCap, at the time of writing, Solana is valued at $201.38. A 0.89% dip was witnessed over the last 24 hours, with the trading volume reaching $3.69 billion.

The upcoming Alpenglow upgrade for Solana aims to enhance its speed and scalability. Hence, Solana can compete with top networks and draw in high-volume applications.

Star Trucker’s anniversary update adds wheel and joystick support to the space lorry sim, plus speed cameras

by admin September 5, 2025

Star Trucker, Raw Fury’s answer to what Euro Truck Simulator might look like in the year 3000, is now a year old, and has celebrated that fact with an update that finally lets you whip out your wheel and pedals.

Ever since I gave it a go with a controller prior to letting my Game Pass subscription crumble into dust, this is a day I’ve yearned for. After all, what good are truck sims, be they Euro, American or something more Snowrunnery, if you’re not operating the controls of your great metal haulage beast by flicking flappy gearbox paddles, or sawing away at a circle clearly designed for something a bit sportier?

That’s what this anniversary update for the interstellar hauler delivers, with wheels like the Thrustmaster T128 and flight sticks like VKB’s Gladiator NXT EVO being early additions to the devs’ handy tracking sheet of tested peripherals. There’s also a guide and FAQ rundown from Raw Fury to help folks get their hardware up, running, and fully bound to all the inputs space trucking requires.

Gear recognised by the game should set itself up with default bindings automatically, but I usually find creating my own basic set of essential buttons not that time-consuming, as long as the game wants to acknowledge your wheel exists. Just remember to bind a pause button, and stick the handbrake somewhere your finger can easily hold it when you want to see if your rig can finish a delivery with a 10/10 skid.

As a counterweight to all the wheel and pedal lorry mischief I planned the minute I clocked this update, it also comes with new speed checks. Yep, cameras, fines, the works. These camera checkpoints along the trails of the galaxy will even show you what speed you’re doing as you pass them, though the notes don’t mention if you get shown a little smiley face for not blasting through a Jupiter school zone at 120mph. You can also disable these checks via the settings, if the threat of having to attend a speeding course with the crowd from the Mos Eisley cantina is just too much.

Aside from that, there are a couple of updates to trailers, and a couple of optional truck goodies to commemorate the game’s first birthday. The latter includes a hologrammatic image of a cake you can display in your cab. Just remember to eat plenty before your next long haul.

If you’ve not given Star Trucker a go, our Nic dubbed it “a game that’s much more about the ‘trucker’ of it all than the stars, but the trucker of it all really does shine” in his review, writing:

When you exit the airlock to patch up hull breaches, little white spanner icons mark the offending damage. The symbol that marks the airlock to return to your truck is a home. I noticed it early, and then I kept noticing it. The more I did, the more perfect it felt.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to oversteer that home into an asteroid belt.

To help speed up unlocking those Battlefield 6 items, Battlefield 2042 is turning on the double XP hose every weekend until the new game launches

by admin August 29, 2025

As Battlefield fans far and wide channel their Battlefield 6 anticipation into revisits of older chapters of the series, only one is offering goodies usable in the new game. Battlefield 2042 is hosting a “Road to Battlefield” event with a free battle pass offering new guns and 24 exclusive cosmetics for Battlefield 6.

Good deal, except the battle pass is a bit of a grind as-is. There are a lot of non-BF6 items in there that folks don’t care as much about—many are only playing for the BF6 stuff, and even 2042 fans are planning to leave it behind when the new game comes out—so folks are a little annoyed that they might not get all the good stuff before time’s up.

DICE says not to worry, because from now until the launch of Battlefield 6, every weekend is double XP weekend. Sweeter words never spoken.

“We’ve heard your concerns that you might have missed out on an XP weekend already, or might miss one of the upcoming ones, making it harder to catch up and get all the items from the Free Battlepass you’ve wanted. We therefore will have a double XP event every weekend until the Free Battlepass ends on October 7,” the update blog reads.

“Additionally, the last two weekends will feature triple XP gains, so keep those circled in your calendar!”

Triple XP? Is that even legal? Now that’s how you send a Battlefield off with a bang.

With double XP on, I jumped into a few matches today and started flying through the pass. If you’re looking for max XP grindage, I’d recommend playing Breakthrough as a Medic, chilling just behind the frontline, and going absolutely bananas with revives. Battlefield 2042 already gives so much XP for support actions, so the more bandages and ammo bags you can throw down, the better.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Folks are squarely focused on those BF6 goodies, but the rest of the free pass is a treat for longtime fans. The bundle of player cards, icons, and skins reference past Battlefields dating back to Bad Company 2, including some that highlight well-known community members. It’s a fun walk down memory lane, so long as that walk only goes as far back as 2010 (sorry, BF2, 2142, and 1943 diehards).

Keeping with the fan-pleasing theme of the event, Battlefield 2042 also got what will likely be its final new map: a futuristic take on Iwo Jima. With an active volcano covering the island’s lush beaches with ash and molten runoff, it’s not the prettiest version of Iwo Jima, but it’s at least distinct.

Tom Lee Destroys Ethereum Speed Myth, Wall Street Wants 100% Uptime

Tom Lee Destroys Ethereum Speed Myth, Wall Street Wants 100% Uptime

by admin August 29, 2025

Tom Lee, the cofounder of Fundstrat, has debunked an assumption that has floated around in the cryptocurrency space about Ethereum (ETH). Lee claims that institutional investors on Wall Street are more concerned about performance and reliability than speed.

Unusual advocacy for Ethereum

In an interview, Lee maintained that Ethereum’s uptime and decentralization make it attractive to large-scale finance. Hence, given that institutions care more about reliability and security than they do about raw speed, Ethereum has an edge among rival blockchains.

The Fundstrat cofounder explained that even if Ethereum is slower on its base layer, this can be overcome with scaling solutions like layer-2 networks. This will compensate for the cost and speed issues.

EXCLUSIVE – “WALL STREET DOESN’T CARE ABOUT SPEED – THEY WANT ETH”@fundstrat:

“The crypto community abandoned Ethereum… they thought faster was better – that’s why Solana and Sui took off.

But Wall Street wants 100% uptime, not speed – they can build on layer twos.

Lee asserts that big institutional players are not prioritizing blockchain networks on the basis of speed. He acknowledged that Solana and Sui might process transactions faster than Ethereum, but “Wall Street doesn’t care about speed, they want ETH.”

He insisted that these institutional players are more concerned about Ethereum for its long track record, strong developer ecosystem and reliability. Lee believes that it was retail traders who made Solana and Sui relevant as they shifted attention to these chains due to lower fees and high throughput.

Ethereum price outlook shows signs of major cycle

Tom Lee pointed out that although Ethereum has not posted multiple new all-time highs (ATH) since the 2021 bull market, things are looking different now. The leading altcoin has gained over 14% in the last 30 days and managed to find stability above $4,000 for the greater part of this time period.

However, Ethereum recently hit an ATH of $4,885, as reported by U.Today. Lee maintains that if ETH stays above $4,800, then the market could witness a really big bullish cycle.

As of press time, the Ethereum price was changing hands at $4,353.06, representing a 5.49% decline in the last 24 hours. It previously hit an intraday peak of $4,613.78 before the decline. Volume remains up by 0.07% at $40.48 billion.

BTC, ETH, DOGE Price News: Declines Pick Up Speed

by admin August 25, 2025

Hopes for a quick reversal from the weekend crypto plunge faltered on Monday with bitcoin BTC$110,210.61 slipping all the way back below $110,000, just barely ahead of its then-euphoric price of $109,400 touched ahead of President Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration.

The largest crypto’s recovery attempt was quickly rejected at $113,000 during the U.S. session, and it fell precipitously to a seven-week low, CoinDesk price data shows. Recently, BTC traded at $109,700, down 2.7% over the past 24 hours and lower by about 7% since soaring above $117,000 in wake of Fed Chair Jay Powell’s dovish Friday Jackson Hole speech.

While major altcoins held up relatively well during the Sunday crash, they succumbed to the market weakness on Monday. Ethereum’s ether (ETH) plummeted nearly 8% over the past 24 hours below $4,400. Solana’s SOL (SOL), dogecoin DOGE$0.2091, Cardano ADA$0.8401, Chainlink LINK$23.30 also declined 6%-8%.

Today’s price swing liquidated nearly $700 million in leveraged trading positions across all crypto derivatives, surpassing the Sunday flush, CoinGlass data shows. Some $627 million of the liquidated trades were longs anticipating higher prices.

What may further spook traders is weak seasonality as the end of August nears. September has brought historically the weakest returns for BTC and ETH with 3.77% and 6.42% losses on average for the month, respectively, per CoinGlass data.

UPDATE (Aug. 25, 20:28 UTC): Adds liquidation data by CoinGlass.
