McDonald’s launches Black Myth Wukong collab with special merch & black burger buns

McDonald’s is celebrating China’s Mid-Autumn festival with a special collaboration in honor of the country’s standout AAA game, Black Myth Wukong.

Black Myth Wukong was a resounding success for Chinese studio Game Science, which brought the timeless epic of Sun Wukong to players around the globe in August 2024.

Winning Best Action-Adventure at the Game Awards, Wukong has continued to capture the hearts and minds of fans in the year since then, and the developers are already working on their next mythos-inspired game, Black Myth: Zhong Kui.

In recognition of Wukong’s achievements, McDonald’s China is collaborating with the highly-lauded title to ring in the country’s Mid-Autumn Festival.

Black Myth: Wukong comes to McDonald’s China with special meals & merch

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a holiday in China that celebrates the fall harvest when the moon is at its largest and brightest. During this time, friends and family will gather together and gaze up at the harvest moon, bake moon cakes, and decorate their homes with lanterns.

McDonald’s is giving customers the best of both worlds in honor of both Black Myth: Wukong and the Mid-Autumn festival by offering limited-time items and special merchandise.

In mid-September, promotional materials from McDonald’s China began circulating on social media, showing posters of Sun Wukong alongside a slew of special meal deals.

Two of the limited-time offerings include a ‘Golden Crispy Chicken Egg Mooncake,’ as well as a ‘Cheese Double Beef Black Gold Mooncake.’ Also on offer are Crispy Shrimp Nuggets and Curly Fries with dipping sauce “as golden as treasure.”

For desserts, customers can choose from an Autumn Osmanthus-flavored Sparkling Milk Tea, a Golden Egg Yolk Big Luck Flavor McFlurry, and a Sesame Lava Pie packed with egg yolk filling.

That’s not all; fans can even purchase an exclusive, double-sided velvet lounge robe embroidered with the Monkey King holding a burger on his head.

Certain McDonald’s locations in the country have even decorated their restaurants to match the game, as well as setting up pop-up shops with special merchandise like tote bags, T-Shirts, pins, and more.

What’s so special about the original Hollow Knight? The intoxicating power of Team Cherry’s invisible, insistent guiding hand

It’s not just locked doors, imposing bosses, and top-tier traversal. It’s a world, a sensation, a desperate and lonely feeling communicated through screen and pad. It’s chains and foliage obscuring the foreground, as imposingly huge bugs slink about in the background. The depth of parallax art and the grit of an impossible fight. The feeling of movement as you flap your wings or dash over pits or scramble up walls. The world is dying, but you feel alive and vital within it. From vanishingly small beginnings to power comparable to godhood, Hollow Knight isn’t just a good game: it’s one of the best ever made.

There’s been a wealth of incredible Metroidvania games from small dev teams over the past few generations – Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, Headlander, Ori and the Blind Forest to name just a few – but I don’t think any of them compare with Hollow Knight, really. Team Cherry’s 2017 debut is a masterpiece. And I am not using that word lightly. It represents a high tide for the genre that I think even surpasses the achievements of its progenitors, taking the foundational design philosophies of Metroid and Castlevania and sanding off all the rough edges to leave something elegant, perplexing and utterly moreish.

It all begins with its subtle tutorialisation. This is a Metroidvania, so the unwritten understanding is that you get power-ups, and they open up new areas. When you’re thrown into the world of Hallownest from the starting town of Dirtmouth with the vague instruction of ‘head on down’, you are instantly and subconsciously directed about where to go next: verdant green leaves tease the Green Path from the Forgotten Crossroads, and peculiar pink gems nod towards the Crystal Peak.

It’s the enticing greenery of the Path that typically grabs your attention first, though – the visual language of the game’s ‘second zone’ eating into the starting area in a small touch you’ll soon notice runs as a theme in the game. One screen in, and you’re barred; an armoured beetle-like thing impedes your progress. So you soldier on, going right instead of left, until you face your first boss and ingest your first upgrade, the Vengeful Spirit. In order to leave this area, an NPC instructs you to clear its temple, and what do you find at the exit? The very same armoured beetle, which you can now kill. Aha, you think, I know this guy.

So you backtrack, clear the doorway, and you’re on your way. That experience, a delicious example of early game not-quite-handholding that makes you feel like you’ve done all the work, sets a precedent. It’s easy, early on, to trick a player into thinking they’re smart for putting two and two together and coming out with four. But as the paths deviate, the 15 zones that make up Hallownest and its colonies begin to show themselves, and you start to gain a bit more independence, Team Cherry keeps finding ways to make you feel smart. It’s intoxicating, ego-boosting, and I even think at times it feels sublime. Really.

You’re nudged along with barely perceptible cues that keep your brain itching whilst your fingers dance over the parabolic difficulty spikes in Hollow Knight’s combat. So many design decisions in this game are small, but mighty – fitting for a game about bugs, failing empires, and bitter godheads. Each area, be it the perpetually soggy City of Tears or the dusty dankness of the Ancient Basin, has its own specific colour. Colours are saturated, and props and set dressing is placed (with little repetition) to make each area feel distinct. In your head, you associate these areas with the map: left is green, right is pink, down is blue. It tugs at your cortex, so when you’re trying to navigate, you’ve always got an impression of what direction applies to what power.

But there’s more. The map itself hues its areas to match the world design, subconsciously gluing these colours to your spacial reasoning processes even more distinctly. Paired with more explicit progression cues – Silksong’s Hornet teasing you with which way to go by constantly dashing out of reach and out of view – Hollow Knight simultaneously baits you and makes you feel like you’re in control of your fate. It’s a dirty, delicious trick. And I cannot wait to see how this formula is expanded upon in the sequel.

Team Cherry’s approach to the map, too, cedes all power to the player. It’s not until you actually make it to the City of Tears that the game itself actually applies anything to your map – and even then, it’s a strange waypoint for a place we’ve already discovered. Otherwise, it’s all on you. You even need to choose between a power-up notch in your character screen and a marker to identify where you are on the map. Some may call this obtuse, or needlessly unhelpful, but I think it does wonders for the sense of place Hollow Knight dedicates so much effort to instilling in your head. You pull up the map a lot. Good. If you want to learn everything there is to know about Hallownest, you should know it inside out. The relationship between the knight and the world is a symbiotic relationship, technically and narratively, and all of these mechanics feed into that.

I think that’s where the real appeal of Hollow Knight lies. You have proper agency when it comes to progression and exploration – a sense of proper agency I have honestly only felt in the first Dark Souls in terms of ‘modern’ games. You’re let loose to discover your power on your terms, pluck at various locks and see which one comes undone, whilst also given the power to go and forge your own locks. You don’t even need to be a game design savant to understand the potential for sequence breaks (something Ori and the Blind Forest also understood very well), and by keeping a keen eye on the environment and the map, it feels like Team Cherry almost dares you to skip certain bosses or platforming challenges. The devs understand player ego, how to appeal to it, and how to challenge it. It makes the game’s difficulty more than just a combat or dexterity check, but an emotional one, too.

A lot of Metroidvania games also fall down when they design their critical paths: all too often, there will be one place you need to find and use your new power in order to progress. Some bits of Hollow Knight have four separate paths leading to the ‘next bit’ of the critical path. Chances are, you’ll happen upon one when casually exploring, or backtracking to farm currency or get a combat upgrade. The trail of breadcrumbs never runs out, and by letting you manually pin things to your map when resting at a bench, the sense of self-direction always feels natural and encouraged. The invisible hand of Team Cherry, it becomes clear from this first game alone, is one of the deftest in the business. And that insistent, impossibly light touch is so much of what makes Hollow Knight so special, so compelling, so intoxicating.

I’ve not even touched on the strength of the combat and the 160+ enemies here, or the build-crafting that’s integral to your journey through the game via pins and notches. I’ve not spoken about the game-changing spectral/dream mechanic you unlock about 50 percent of the way through, and how Team Cherry makes asset reuse into a genius portion of the game that anyone that’s played, say, Bravely Default would be agog over. I’ve not spoken about the subtle narrative craft that rivals FromSoft in its multi-layered complexity. I’ve not spoken about the music, the use of leitmotif, or how five twinkly piano notes can evoke such a distinct sense of loss, hopelessness, and desolation.

But that’s because it’s the design of Hollow Knight that sets it apart both from its contemporaries and its inspirations. Sure, the game wouldn’t be half as good if it didn’t have stellar combat or a surprisingly deep build-crafting system, but it’s in the irrepressible way the game keeps nudging you deeper, further down into its mystery that it truly shines. Hollow Knight is, indeed, a masterpiece, an exemplary manifestation of a developer understanding and leveraging player psychology. Is all this hype for Silksong really justified? Yes. And then some.

Preorder The Shining Film Vault Special Edition At Walmart Before It’s Gone

Stanley Kubrick and Stephen King fans can secure a preorder for a highly collectible 4K Blu-ray edition of The Shining at Walmart. Part of The Film Vault collector’s series, The Shining Special Edition Steelbook is available to order for $100 at Walmart ahead of its September 2 release in the US. Along with the steelbook case with new artwork, this limited-edition release comes with cigar box packaging, a double-sided poster, and a bunch of art cards. It looks like the ultimate collector’s version of the legendary horror movie, so snag a copy while you still can. A cheaper edition without the extras releases the same day. The Shining Solus Steelbook Edition is $65 and has sold out at least twice already.

Created by Vice Press in partnership with Warner Bros. UK, The Shining Special Edition is one of two early ’80s horror films in The Film Vault Wave 3. The Shining will launch alongside the 1982 supernatural horror film Poltergeist. Walmart is also taking preorders for Poltergeist’s Special Edition Steelbook and Poltergeist Solus Steelbook. Both editions were in stock at the time of writing. The Shining and Poltergeist Film Vault limited editions come with region-free 4K Blu-ray and 1080p Blu-ray discs.

Note: Both of the Film Vault editions listed on Walmart’s site, along with a couple of other retailer-exclusive versions, sold out months ago in the UK and at specialty Blu-ray shops.

Walmart will almost certainly sell out of both editions before launch. If you missed out on the 2025 Walmart-exclusive Steelbook Edition of The Shining, now’s your chance to grab one that looks much cooler. But you may want to move fast. I wrote an article about Walmart’s The Shining Steelbook when preorders opened last December, and it sold out the following day.

The Film Vault: The Shining Special Edition

The Film Vault places the movie title and other text on acetate O-rings, allowing fans to choose whether to display the cigar box with or without words and logos. The new artwork by Matt Ferguson and Florey looks beautiful. The cigar box has a large silhouette of Jack Torrance with the fireman’s axe overlooking (sorry) the Overlook Hotel. On the back is Jack’s typewriter, and there are even words on the paper–likely the same sentence over and over again. The artwork on the steelbook case recreates the scene where Jack trudges through the hedge maze.

The steelbook artwork is also featured on the double-sided movie poster. The other side is a retouched version of Saul Bass’ well-known poster that was created for The Shining’s 1980 theatrical release. The eight art cards showcase memorable shots from the film as well as behind-the-scenes production photographs.

If you’re unfamiliar with The Film Vault, it’s a series of collectible editions of classic movies from the Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures film catalogs. The Film Vault was created in 2022 by Vice Press, a UK company specializing in officially licensed movie collectibles and artwork. All of the 4K Blu-rays released by The Film Vault are region-free discs, but as a UK company, these limited-edition versions of all-time classics aren’t regularly found at US retailers. We suspect The Shining is exclusive to Walmart in the US.

The Film Vault: The Shining Steelbook Edition

The Shining Solus Steelbook Edition by Vice Press & Warner Bros. UK

At the time of writing, The Shining Solus Steelbook Limited Edition is sold out–but we’d recommend checking to see if Walmart restocked it. It has already received at least one restock. It was sold out when I first found the store page August 22, but I was able to order a copy on August 23, just a few hours before writing this story.

The above image provides a look at the back cover of the steelbook case and the hedge maze landscape artwork on the inside covers. Just like with the Special Edition, the Solus Steelbook comes with an acetate O-ring with with the title and other text. It is worth noting that the Special Edition’s O-ring is for the cigar box–you won’t get a second O-ring for the steelbook case.

If you are interested in a $100 edition of The Shining, it’s a safe bet that you or someone you know is a huge fan. As a massive fan myself, I can say that if I had to choose between a fancy new edition of The Shining on 4K Blu-ray or the recently released compendium about the film, I would pick the compendium without thinking twice.

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is a two-volume, 1,396-page box set that offers a staggeringly comprehensive look at the making of the film. This beautiful slipcase collection was designed by M/M Paris and published by Taschen earlier this year.

Written by J.W. Rinzler and edited by Pixar director Lee Unkrich, this compendium is based on hundreds of hours of interviews and mountains of investigative research. The first book, which includes an introduction by Steven Spielberg, chronicles every step of the production. When I received my copy earlier this year, I was astounded by the level of detail provided throughout the roughly 900-page hardcover book. If there’s a more thorough making-of book about a single movie, I would be shocked. This book is nearly as long as all three volumes in Rinzler’s The Making of Star Wars series, which is also fantastic.

The box set also comes with a gorgeous scrapbook filled with a wide array of photographs, artwork, and documents related to the production of The Shining.

To put it simply: This compendium is the best collection of behind-the-scenes material–across any medium–I’ve ever read.

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is in stock at Amazon for $124, but it’s unknown how many copies the publisher printed and whether it will receive additional print runs. Amazon sold out when preorders opened last summer, and the box set remained out of stock until a few months ago.

By surrendering to an ‘open weapons’ default, Battlefield 6 is giving up the most special thing about Battlefield

Almost a week removed from the Battlefield 6 beta, I wouldn’t blame you for being tired of hearing about weapons being open or closed.

On its face, the debate appears moot as Battlefield Studios keeps saying it will support both rulesets in BF6 regardless of their popularity. New players coming over from Call of Duty think divorcing class choice from weapon choice feels normal and natural, many longtime fans feel strongly about keeping weapons locked to classes, and some have even been converted to open weapons after trying it these past two weekends. No matter your preference, Battlefield 6 will accommodate you, and everyone will be happy.

I don’t want to leave it at that. Options are nice, but let’s be honest: we’re talking about two polar opposite design philosophies vying for influence over Battlefield 6’s current and future direction. BF Studios cannot realistically expect to support both as if they’re equally important. In fact, the studios are already subtly picking sides: The beta demonstrated that open weapons is the default Battlefield 6 experience, and closed weapons is just a secondary option pushed to the back.

That would be a huge mistake. I’m not here to argue that Battlefield 6 is unfun with open weapons, but I do submit that it doesn’t really feel like Battlefield.

Class-locked weapons are half of what gave classes an identity in the earlier games—they don’t just inform what you’re good at, but what you’re bad at. Tailoring the entirety of a kit to its role provides a fundamentally interesting set of constraints, and to throw that away is to give up on what makes Battlefield special.

It didn’t work in BF2042 either

We saw this happen in Battlefield 2042. At launch, DICE went thermonuclear on the class system, blowing up the concept of classes and divvying up their duties among “specialists” with unique gadgets and overlapping equipment. Their gadgets suggested a specialty, like Falck’s medic pistol, but DICE wanted to get away from the pesky shackles of defined kit. Any specialist could use any gun or secondary gadget.

It was a madhouse: Assaults could heal their team while shooting rockets, engineers could resupply their own Stinger missiles, recons had every tactical advantage with none of the risk, and nobody had to rely on each other for anything. The butchered roles were so unpopular that DICE eventually recanted on its “play your way” vision and reintroduced class-specific gadgets.

It was better, but the problem was only half solved: weapons remained open to all classes, and that created the half-hearted class system that persisted into Battlefield 6.

The assault rifle “problem”

During a Q&A with press at a Battlefield 6 reveal event in July, DICE’s Johan Andersson and David Sirland suggested that open weapons solves an “assault rifle problem” that existed in past Battlefields. Their metrics showed that people tend to pick classes based on weapons, so the class with the most versatile and easy-to-use weapons (Assaults with assault rifles) became the most popular.

Classes are not meant to be equally popular in Battlefield.

The perceived imbalance created the impression that teams “never have enough medics” because everybody wants ARs and grenade launchers, not the LMGs and med bags of the Bad Company games. In an attempt to lean into the assault rifle’s popularity, Battlefield 3 and 4 gave medics exclusive access to assault rifles, ensuring that the most popular class would also serve an important support role.

It worked, but not without consequence: merging two important roles left a utility vacuum for the dedicated Support class (with its LMG and ammo box) that made it weak and unused. The problem with the “assault rifle problem” is that it was never truly a problem. The assault rifle is the most popular type of gun because the Assault class is supposed to be the most popular class.

Balanced imbalance

Classes are not meant to be equally popular in Battlefield. Assaults were originally conceived as the frontline of the team—your basic rifleman grunt—with other classes serving specialized roles with situational kits. Weapon assignments have changed hands a lot over the years, but balancing classes through gun choice has been a constant. In Bad Company 2, for instance, the engineer’s power to fight tanks was checked by their limited range with SMGs.

Battlefield 6 is hurtling toward the most boring version of itself.

Anecdotally, this balanced imbalance worked wonders in the Battlefield 6 beta’s closed weapons playlist. Across 25 hours of matches, I noticed a plurality of Assaults (though the class was also popular for shotgun reasons), a decent number of medics and engineers, and even fewer snipers.

A comfortable spread of roles has positive knock-on effects: fewer scope glints on hills to worry about, fewer RPG barrages the moment you enter a tank, and an increased importance that teams protect their medics and stick together. It feels like Battlefield as it was meant to be.

Open weapons, for all its freedom of choice, turns your perfectly tuned gun into the star of the show, leaving classes themselves as an afterthought. The game theory behind a complete kit gets outshouted by the reliable hum of the M433 Assault Rifle with Compensated Muzzle Brake, 16.5″ Barrel, Ribbed Vertical Foregrip, Full Metal Jacket Ammunition, 30-round Fast Mag, and OSA-7 1.00x Dot Sight.

No matter what gadgets are in your pocket, nothing informs your playstyle more than the gun in your hands, and if 18 years of Call of Duty create-a-class are any indication, then Battlefield 6 is hurtling toward the most boring version of itself.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection’s Full Roster Includes Mythologies Sub-Zero And Special Forces

Digital Eclipse has revealed the full roster of games for its retrospective compilation/interactive documentary, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection. This update reveals that the infamously terrible single-player spin-off titles Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces will be part of the bundle.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero launched for the original PlayStation and Nintendo 64 in 1997 and is a side-scrolling action game starring the titular ice ninja (specifically Bi-Han, the first Sub-Zero and eventual Noob Saibot). Spoiler: It’s a very bad game, but it is notable for featuring the series debuts for staple fighters Quan Chi and Shinnok. You can watch former GI editors (including Giant Bomb’s Dan Ryckert) suffer through this game in this classic 2010 episode of Replay, posted below.

 

Mortal Kombat: Special Forces was released in 2000, also for PlayStation 1, and is a 3D action game starring Jax. The game sees him taking on Kano and his crew of baddies, including the debuting Tremor, who would later resurface as a DLC fighter in Mortal Kombat X. Special Forces didn’t exactly light the world on fire; that’s a nice way of saying it’s also terrible. It does have a very funny and strange ‘70s spy-themed intro cinematic going for it, though.

Digital Eclipse also announced that the extremely rare WaveNet Arcade version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is part of the Kollection. This version was originally made to support Midway’s WaveNet online matchmaking service for arcades, and has not been available on any platform since 1997. It’s also the only arcade release to feature Noob Saibot as a playable fighter.

Hollow Knight Silksong ‘Special Announcement’ Set For August 21

Hollow Knight: Silksong has been so anticipated for so many years that it’s become a meme, crowding the chat of every major game showcase of the last seven years. While we’ve had recent glimpses, like the announcement that it was coming to Switch 2, we haven’t heard a concrete update from Team Cherry since its announcement that it wouldn’t be releasing in 2023. This week, that will finally change.

Team Cherry’s official YouTube channel has a premiere set for Thursday, August 21, at 10:30 AM ET/ 7:30 AM PT. Its title reads, “Hollow Knight: Silksong – Special Announcement,” while the caption simply reads, “The countdown is on! Join us in 48 hours for a special announcement about Hollow Knight: Silksong!” It is unclear what exactly this announcement will involve, but fans are mostly just hoping for a release date.

 

Despite the general lack of information, Silksong is playable at this year’s Gamescom, according to Xbox, and it will be available on Microsoft’s ROG ALLY device, so we’re expecting some kind of announcement during Opening Night Live in a few hours. Geoff Keighley seemed to support this by posting a photo with a clown nose, potentially referencing the meme of Hollow Knight’s protagonist in clown attire that’s posted whenever we don’t get news about its sequel. 

However, partnered with this announcement is a series of Bluesky posts from Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who is known for accurately digging up information from behind the scenes of the games industry. Not only does he claim to have “the story behind why Silksong took seven years to make,” citing a video call he did with Team Cherry’s founders earlier this month, he also says, “No, Silksong’s release date will not be announced today at Gamescom Opening Night Live, despite Geoff Keighley’s teasing.” Team Cherry’s Thursday announcement will come after Opening Night Live, however, so there’s a chance we might get a date then. While Schreier has a solid track record in this line of work, none of this is confirmed, so take it all with a grain of salt.

Regardless of when it drops or what this trailer will bring, people will be there to watch it. With 15,000 in the YouTube audience a full 47 hours before it even happens, it’s safe to say this is one of the most anticipated games of the decade. Here’s hoping Team Cherry gives them something to get excited about.

A Hollow Knight: Silksong “Special Announcement” is planned for Thursday, with the video set to run on YouTube at 3.30pm BST on 21st August.

The news of a “Special Announcement” on Silksong comes after speculation (not unwarranted) that the game would be shown off during Gamescom ONL tonight, with a release date potentially being revealed.

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier‬ posted on Bluesky to confirm that Silksong would not be having its release date revealed tonight:

“No, Silksong’s release date will not be announced today at Gamescom Opening Night Live, despite Geoff Keighley’s teasing,” read the post.
