Sonos is selling a bunch of its speakers at a discount on its own site and Amazon. This includes the well-regarded Era 300 smart speaker, which is down to just $359. That’s 20 percent off and notable because this particular speaker rarely goes on sale. It’s a Sonos miracle!

The deal applies to both the black and white colorways. The Era 300 is a highly capable device that we praised in our official review, saying that it “sounds excellent.” We went on to say that it offers a premium experience that far surpasses other products in the company’s lineup, like the Era 100. This is also true when compared to rival speakers like Apple’s HomePod.

Sonos

It’s simple to set up and offers the company’s proprietary Trueplay tuning system. This feature optimizes the sound of the speaker to the unique acoustics of a room by leveraging an internal microphone. It measures how sound reflects off surfaces and adjusts the EQ to match. It’s pretty nifty.

As for connectivity, it can pair with another Era 300 speaker for a true stereo experience. It also includes a Bluetooth receiver and line-in options. Of course, the speaker integrates with just about every streaming music service. The built-in mic also allows for voice assistant control, but only with Siri and Alexa. Google Assistant is left out of the party.

This speaker goes all-in on spatial audio, and the results are mixed. Sometimes it’s sublime and sometimes it’s kind of eh. This is more of a dig on the technology itself. It has serious potential but is still experiencing growing pains. The only real downside of this speaker is the exorbitant asking price, which has been slightly alleviated by this sale.

As previously mentioned, other Sonos products are available at a discount. This includes the Sonos Beam Gen 2 soundbar, which is 26 percent off at $369, and the Era 100, which is down to $179. These deals are also available via Sonos itself. There’s also an ongoing sale on portable speakers that includes the Move 2 and the Roam 2.

There are a lot of great soundbars out there, and we don’t have room to feature them all. Here are some others you might want to consider.

LG’s S95TR for $1,000-1,500: LG’s 9.1.5-channel soundbar (8/10, WIRED Recommends) doesn’t perform as well as Samsung’s flagship Q990 series, but it could be a better choice for those with newer LG TVs like the C4, which can connect wirelessly and use its speakers in tandem with the bar for more immersion. It also supports gaming features like 120-Hz pass-through, but only includes one spare input.

Sony Bravia Theater 9 for $1,400: Sony’s follow-up to the potent HT-A7000 flagship soundbar regresses in some key ways. There are fewer inputs (no more analog), a more mundane fabric-wrapped design, and minimal sound settings. The Theater 9’s leaner frame equates to a less meaty and immersive soundstage, but this is still a Sony flagship soundbar, which means great musicality, superb detail, and advanced spatial imaging for 3D audio. Premium features like an HDMI 2.1 input for connecting modern game consoles and advanced integration with newer Sony TVs sweeten the deal, but at $1,400, it’s a pricey proposition.

Vizio 2.1 Soundbar (SV210M) for $170: Vizio’s curvy little combo brings enticing value, with solid sound quality and some cinematic punch from the teensiest subwoofer you’ll ever see. There’s no optical input or remote included, but the Vizio app makes adjusting settings or swapping to Bluetooth simple enough. The main drawback is that dialog sometimes (but not always) gets lost, reducing the main draw of a cheap soundbar. That said, good musical chops and features like DTS Virtual X expansion make it worth considering on sale.

Samsung HW-Q800C for $598: If Samsung’s HW-Q990C everything bar is too rich for your blood, the two-piece HW-Q800C (8/10, WIRED Recommends) could be a good compromise. This bar offers a similar sound signature as Samsung’s flagship bars and many of the same features, packed into a smaller bar-and-subwoofer combo for a notable discount–especially since it’s now almost always on sale.

Sennheiser Ambeo Mini for $700: This pint-sized luxury bar is great for those with money to burn in very small spaces. Sennheiser’s built-in Ambeo virtualization technology brilliantly throws sound all around you for exhilarating TV shows and movies, and offers advanced features like support for Google Assistant and Alexa.

Sony HT-X8500 for $300: Sony’s HT-X8500 is getting harder to find, but it’s still one of our favorite options for those after a single bar with solid bass response and expansive sound, including decent Dolby Atmos virtualization. While it’s pricier than our top bar, it’s a great alternative for those after a bit more, and worth considering while it’s still available.

Sennheiser Ambeo Plus for $1,200: Given the price and the physical dimensions of the soundbar—which doesn’t even include a subwoofer—the Ambeo Plus might look like a poor deal. But thanks to its 400 watts of power and its nine carefully developed and even more carefully positioned drivers, this Sennheiser is capable of big, enveloping sound with a strong suggestion of the sonic height that Dolby Atmos soundtracks thrive on. By way of an encore, it turns out to be a hugely capable wireless speaker when you want to listen to some music, too. —Simon Lucas

The Polk React for $269: This soundbar works if you want to get surround sound eventually but don’t have the cash right now. The Alexa-enabled soundbar is fine on its own, with surround speakers and subwoofers available from Polk if you want to upgrade.

How to Connect Your Soundbar

We’ve included a list of available connectivity options next to every soundbar on our list. Most soundbars will connect to your TV via optical or HDMI cables, though the optical input is starting to go away for newer models, including even pricey flagship options. In most cases, HMDI is the preferable connection anyway.

If your TV and soundbar both have an HDMI ARC/eARC port (the cable port looks like regular HDMI, but it’s labeled ARC or eARC), connect it that way. It will allow you to use the volume buttons on your TV remote to control the soundbar’s volume. Also, make sure CEC is enabled. Use an optical cable only if HDMI isn’t available, as HDMI is also necessary for Dolby Atmos and other 3D audio formats.

Finally, check your TV audio menus to make sure your TV’s internal speakers are set to off (so you don’t get any weird audio fluttering) and find the best spots to place your speakers and sub.

We have yet to test a new TV that didn’t sound better with an audio accessory. That’s mostly due to the way televisions are designed. Great-sounding speakers are bulky, and as TVs have gotten thinner with shrinking bezels and sleeker designs, manufacturers are having a harder time building good speakers into them.

Are Soundbars as Good as Speakers?

Stumble onto any A/V or home theater subreddit or forum and you’ll see a mob of people claiming even the idea of a soundbar matching up to a pair of speakers is heresy. The truth, as far as we’re concerned, is that it all depends on your individual wants and needs.

If you’re looking for the most musical bang for your buck, especially when it comes to hi-res audio and vinyl record collections, a great pair of bookshelf speakers is likely your best value option. That may not be the best option for everybody, though. Soundbars are affordable and hassle-free solutions, many of which offer sound and features that may match your needs better than a pair of speakers or a traditional home theater setup. We take no sides here, we just love good sound and great features. For many, a soundbar is the best way to get there.

This is a question only you can answer, but there are a few points to consider before making a call, starting with your living space. If you live in a smaller apartment or multiplex, a subwoofer may not be the best choice due to both its size and its likelihood of arousing noise complaints. Larger modern soundbars have gotten increasingly good at reproducing convincing bass from a single bar, often utilizing multiple speakers in concert to bring more punch to lower frequencies without causing lots of boom and bombast.

If you’re less concerned about close quarters and looking for more cinematic punch, you should highly consider a soundbar with a subwoofer. Physics can only be stretched so far, and no multi-speaker system we’ve heard can match the punch and potency of a dedicated large driver and acoustic cabinet. Even many affordable soundbar models include a subwoofer. If you want full-throttle sound, we suggest considering going all in for a subwoofer, or at the very least a bar that allows you to add one later.

Sonos portable speakers are up to 25 percent off for Memorial Day

Sonos’ speakers are known for their premium price tags, but if you’re looking for a more affordable entry-point to the ecosystem, you can get up to 25 percent off some of the company’s portable speakers and speaker bundles for Memorial Day. That includes $113 off the Sonos Move 2, which brings the speaker’s price down from $449 to $336.

The Sonos Move 2 was introduced in 2023 as the more expensive follow-up to the original Move, Sonos’ first “portable” speaker. You can argue over it’s portability — the Move 2 makes more sense as something your carry to your backyard than take on a hike — but the speaker packs a punch and lets you play music over both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. We liked the Sonos Move 2 when we originally reviewed it, but took issue with how expensive it was, so this sale helps make splurging on it more palatable.

The Sonos Roam 2 offers some key improvements to the original Roam’s design, too, like new colors and easier to understand buttons, while still providing the company’s signature sound profile and 10 hours of battery life.

On top of the two speakers, you could also buy a bundle of a speaker and an accessory, like the Sonos Roam 2 and an OtterBox case, or a bundle of multiple speakers. You can get two Roam 2’s for $268 or a Sonos Roam 2 and Sonos Move 2 for $479, for example.

Sonos has faced issues in the last year ironing out software problems — the bugs and missing features were so bad the company’s CEO stepped down — but the fundamentals of how the company’s speakers sound have remained great. With the ship mostly righted on the software side of things, a sale is a great time to see what all of the fuss is about.

‘A profound mistake’: Sonos’ CEO talks about its broken app and why it’s been so hard to fix

On May 7, 2024, Sonos launched a new version of its software intended to help customers manage their music and their Sonos system more easily, and with fewer taps. What happened next can only be described as a fiasco. Upon opening the new app for the first time, Sonos users were not only greeted with an unfamiliar interface, many found that their systems had become unresponsive and that features they had come to rely on (like alarms and play queue access) had evaporated.

As days and weeks passed, it became clear that these weren’t temporary glitches. Sonos’ CEO, Patrick Spence, spent the following summer and fall apologizing and assuring his customers (and presumably his board of directors) that the company had adopted an all-hands-on-deck stance and that fixing the broken app was everyone’s top priority. However, eight months after the launch the app was still far from fixed and Spence was fired on January 13, 2025. His replacement, board member Tom Conrad, was announced the same day.

Conrad’s list of previous gigs in senior engineering and product roles at companies like Pandora, Snapchat, Quibi, and Apple makes him a strong choice as Sonos’ interim CEO. But that doesn’t mean it’s been an easy transition.

In fact, when I caught up with Conrad on his 116th day on the job, he described it as a fairly hellish period marked by a number of challenges, including his family’s relocation from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara — a small distance on the map that nonetheless turned into a mini odyssey beset by the unprecedented L.A. wildfires, four different AirBnBs, two flat tires, and having his L.A. home burglarized. Oh, and his dog got skunked. Twice. 

And that was before we started to chat about the job he’d been hired to do: Fix the still-broken Sonos platform so that its customers could finally get back to enjoying their music.

Our short chat managed to cover lot of ground: the company, its products, its now-defunct Ikea partnership, and, of course, the app (and why, one year later, our Sonos systems still aren’t working as they should.)

Too many silos

When he arrived, Conrad discovered that Sonos’ internal teams were siloed by product category (headphones, home theater, etc.), making it difficult to prioritize, share resources, or maintain a cohesive user experience.

“The first thing that I did was to take that apart and put the team back together into hardware and software design, and then do a comprehensive inventory of all of the projects that were underway, many of which, it turned out, were insufficiently staffed for success.”

Conrad slashed a list of “dozens” of these projects down to 11 well-staffed initiatives. “It changed the mood inside the company, kind of overnight.”

A neglected core

It also became apparent that the sheer number of projects and silos had played a big role in the atrophy of Sonos’ core software platform. Since 2019, Sonos had launched a lot of new products. Dolby Atmos soundbars, two types of portable speaker, a Sonos-developed voice assistant, its first wireless headphones, plus a major push into the professional installation market. “The investment that the company was making [in the core software],” Conrad notes, “was not enough.”

And while the app redesign fiasco of 2024 is simply the most recent symptom of this neglect, Conrad says it’s responsible for the kinds of reliability and performance issues that have been left unaddressed since 2019, or longer.

No more trust

Clearly, having a customer base that can’t use your product isn’t ideal for any company. “No one wakes up in the morning and says, I want to spend some time in the Sonos app today,” Conrad quipped. 

He’s crystal clear on the gap between how the app should work: “I think we have one obligation. The experience has to be fast, reliable, usable, and mostly get out of your way,” versus where it’s at today, “The sad reality is that Sonos still fails too often.”

But the worst part of the redesign’s fallout has been the erosion of trust. “The rollout of the app last year was such a profound mistake. All of the goodwill that our customers would normally have applied when they have a little hiccup in their experience — we don’t get any of that benefit of the doubt.” 

Legacy is still Sonos’ greatest strength … and its greatest weakness

Conrad also appears to be gradually making his peace with an inconvenient and unavoidable truth: Longtime Sonos customers often own wireless speakers and components that date back to 2010 or older, and they expect them to keep working — “even though the iPhone 4 they bought the same year has long been relegated to the dust bin.”

He reminded me that Sonos gear is “sensitive to the details of your home network in ways that almost nothing else you own is.” We discussed the intricacies of Wi-Fi and how, long before there were any commercially available mesh routers like Eero or Orbi, the company had created its own mesh system known as SonosNet.

For a moment, it sounded like Conrad might be trying to blame the company’s performance woes on its customers’ networks. In fairness, we live in a very different Wi-Fi environment than the one Sonos found itself in back in 2005, when it launched its first product. However, he acknowledged that despite these challenges, Sonos has to own the solutions. “We made promises to our customers that we will synchronize audio across their [devices], and so we have to solve for this environment. This is the life we’ve chosen.”

He’s also quick to point out that if once-loyal Sonos customers now instinctively blame the company’s products (instead of looking at their internet connection or Wi-Fi for the flaw), “it’s totally deserved.”

Brighter days ahead

One of the biggest problems with the new app is that it hasn’t proven to be an easier-to-use experience than the one it replaced. Conrad sympathizes with those who are wondering, “Why did Sonos invent this new navigation paradigm?” Like many Sonos users, he can be quite critical. “It’s not my appraisal that all of those design decisions were good ones.”

Still, Conrad sounds confident about the future.

“I think we really have cracked the code on the big issues that we needed to solve on performance and reliability, and we’re well on our way to putting that chapter behind us.” He says that fixes to the remaining usability and experiential issues are coming through the summer and fall. “ I feel really great about Sonos right now.”

On Ikea and that mysterious Pinewood project

At the tail end of our chat, I was able to squeeze in one last series of questions around the end of the Ikea Symfonisk speaker partnership — one which produced the most affordable and decor-friendly Sonos speakers to date. Why nix such a seemingly good match?

“That partnership is eight years old and has diminished to the point of being immaterial to our business and theirs. It was a question of walking away from something whose heyday was long in the rearview.”

I was surprised to hear that, given how well the Symfonisk speakers matched Sonos’ previous mission statement of “fill every home with music.”

“That line of thinking is how we got into the partnership,” Conrad acknowledged, “but it’s not really how it ever played out in the real world.”

As for the much-rumored but never officially discussed Pinewood project — Sonos’ now-shelved move into the video streaming world — Conrad refused to be drawn into a discussion. However, he did note that, “You have to know what you can be best in the world at, and you have to bite off an appropriate amount to tackle. Without commenting specifically, you’ll see us continue to focus where we can win.”

Down, but not out

From the start of his tenure as Sonos’ CEO, Conrad has said all of the right things. I came away from our chat believing that even though Sonos’ problems run deeper than anyone had previously acknowledged, he’s focused on what matters most: restoring our Sonos systems so that they just work.

Unfortunately, it sounds like it’s going to be several more months — at least — until that day arrives. Some Sonos customers have already called it quits and I can’t say I blame them. Our home has Sonos speakers in every room (including one of the bathrooms) and my family has grown weary of not being able to play the music they want without encountering bugs. We’ve even started saying “Sonos” as curse word, kinda like Jerry Seinfeld used to utter the name of his nemesis, Newman.

Still, when it works, I have yet to find a multiroom audio system that sounds as good and has as many useful features as Sonos. Wiim is catching up fast — very fast — but for all of its strengths (design, hi-res compatibility, affordability, and reliability), it’s still not as simple and easy to use as Sonos (again, when it works).

I’ll be sticking with Sonos for a little longer. As frustrated as I am by its ongoing issues, I think Tom Conrad deserves a shot at fixing them. And since Sonos didn’t get itself into this mess overnight (even though that’s what it felt like to most of us), I know the fix will also take time. I just hope that patiently waiting doesn’t also prove to be a profound mistake.

Marshall Takes On Sonos With Its First Soundbar

Moving into a new product category is a nervy undertaking for any company, and the current climate of tariff roulette only adds another level of uncertainty. But Marshall, manufacturer of iconic guitar amps and a growing portfolio of wireless speakers and headphones, is marching on regardless, with the launch of its first soundbar. And at $1000, the Atmos-capable Heston 120 is an ambitious first entry.

“This is our most expensive product. And honestly, that’s a little bit scary,” Gustaf Rosell, Marshall’s chief product and innovation officer, tells WIRED in an interview. “But since it’s a new segment for us, we made the decision that we wanted to start at the high end. We don’t always do that, but in this case we thought it was important to make a statement—to show that we are really serious about it.

The idea of adding a soundbar to its line up is one that has been kicking around company discussions for the past five years, Rosell says, but been in production for about three of them. The result is the Heston 120, a 5.1.2-channel Atmos and DTS X soundbar, with 11 separate drivers positioned to offer a wide and high soundfield from a single box.

Tuning a product for so many channels has been a new challenge for Marshall, and it brought new expertise on board to help—even pulling in talent from the automotive industry for their multi-channel experience. “Right now we have two PhDs in house, it’s that level of competence,” Rosell adds. “We also worked really closely with Dolby to help us with some difficult measurements, to ensure that we are placing objects of sound accurately in a room.”

However, a particular focus for the sound team, Rosell tells us, has been about getting the balance right between sounding good for TV and also good for music—a common difficulty for multi-channel audio products. The Heston 120 certainly comes with plenty of music options to put it to the test, including AirPlay 2, Googlecast, and Bluetooth LE, plus Tidal and Spotify Connect.

“Music playback is an area where we have been able to lean into our current expertise, and use some of the modelling from our portable speakers to ensure all of the drivers in the Heston 120 are working just as well together in a more classical stereo setup too. And if I’m to be a little bit bold, we’ve beaten everything we’ve heard from competitors. It’s one of the things I am most proud of with this product.”

Another key focus for the team was the product’s design, but not perhaps in the way that anyone familiar with Marshall products might think. While its speakers are well known for their distinct look, reminiscent of the brand’s famous amplifiers, Heston 120 dials back that approach, just a bit.

“Many products in this area look pretty much the same, they’re trying to blend in, and when TVs are doing their best to hide themselves more and more, you do need to find the right tone.

“But Heston is a conscious design choice for people who want something different—we are not trying to hide. It’s a bold statement, but not as bold as we could have been. I think we’ve found a balance that feels authentic.”
