Pencil Book Quest looks to hit the target with a solo, portable, tactile adventure.

Tabletop gaming, for me, is one of those things I like to do with friends and family. It’s always fun to roll some dice in an RPG with people who will appreciate the epic dice roll and thwarting your gaming rivals plan by reserving a space on the board first and watching him meltdown is always entertaining. However, sometimes there isn’t someone to sit down at a table with and you have to get your fix somewhere. Pencil Book Quest aims to fill that gap with an on the go adventure that takes only 5-10 minutes to make your way through an adventure.

Pencil Book Quest is an upcoming solo dungeon crawling game coming to crowdfunding from Grumpy Spider Games and designer David David. The game features 80 quick adventures featured in a small spiral bound book, needing only a special pencil to complete. Each adventure spans two pages featuring a dungeon map, specific rules and monsters, any special power ups available, and end game bonuses. The stats of your character are kept on a special card which also happens to serve as a bookmark. At various times in the game, you may be requested to roll a 6 sided die (d6), but the pencil that comes with the game can help. Each side of the pencil has a number of dots, so when asked, all you need to do is roll the pencil across the table for your d6.

The goal of each session is to explore the dungeon and collect stars, which are awarded after leaving the current area of play. You will earn stars by defeating enemies, not taking damage, and being efficient with your movement. Getting killed in an area will cross out potential stars and lose any loot you’ve collected. At the end of the campaign, you will be rated by the amount of stars you’ve collected in each category.

Each session, you begin at a starting location and move in any orthogonal direction exactly four spaces. You will always move in a straight line unless they encounter a barrier or an enemy. Littered around the dungeon area are powerups such as coins, different hearts that can heal and grow your hit points, items, weapons, keys to unlock chests of goodies, and weapons. You can hold one weapon at a time which will aid you in combat. Enemies will stop movement and if you stop in any of the 8 squares surrounding it, you will engage in combat. Dun dun dun!

The game uses a special “Point and Write” combat system. The basic form of attacking includes a starting point located next to each individual enemy’s name and image. Below the enemy is a special target that you must aim for. Placing the point of your pencil on the starting point, you will pick up the pencil, with your eyes closed, and aim to hit the target by placing it in the rings. The different colors and rings of the target will deal variable damage to your character and even trigger special attacks that can affect the player into later turns. No matter where the pencil lands on the target, the enemy is always defeated, but it doesn’t mean they can’t leave their mark.

As you move through the campaign you will have opportunities to face different enemies, bosses, and other challenges. You will also encounter different towns that provide opportunities to purchase power-ups, play mini games, and people offering quests. These quests will determine the next area and set of adventures you encounter.

Pencil Book Quest is a fantastic and lightweight way to get a game in on the go. Whether you need a quick break from work or something to do while riding shotgun on a road trip, this game has a lot to offer. Each map you encounter is a balance between fighting monsters and collecting loot and trying to get it all done or cutting your losses and getting out of the area. The mini games you experience in the town are entertaining and the branching paths let you tell your own story. My only qualms with the game is keeping track of my pencil and finding a sharpener after dulling it down with all my intense scribblings.

I had a great time with Pencil Book Quest and appreciate the easy to play and mobile nature of the campaign. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished production copy and future outings from Grumpy Spider Games.

Destiny 2’s latest game-breaking bug: Players can no longer respawn in solo activities… Like, at all

This afternoon my Destiny 2 clanmate texted me to say: “If you die in Solo Ops or Patrol you can no longer respawn 😂”. That can’t be right, I thought. That would be such a fundamental bug that it would effectively break the game. Anyway, I loaded in, did some testing, and you can probably guess where this is going.

We are investigating an issue where players are unable to respawn in Solo Ops activities after dying. We are attempting to solve this issue as soon as we’re able. More information will be provided when available.September 16, 2025

From my own experience, once you die the respawn button will appear after the usual countdown, but cannot be interacted with. In order to start playing again you either need to go to orbit (ie, leave the activity) or switch characters. Which is as big a problem as it sounds. The bug even seems to extend to Patrol zones, although I was occasionally able to self-revive.

Quite how long it will take to fix is anyone’s guess, but as you can tell by the tone of Bungie’s tweet, this is a four alarm fire. You cannot have players trying to complete every solo activity in the game on a single life. I would love to tell you I’m surprised that a bug of this size has made it into the live game, but as we’ve been writing about recently, Destiny 2 is currently in a parlous state, both in terms of its biblical-sized swarm of bugs and player sentiment towards the systemic changes introduced with the Edge of Fate expansion.

Meanwhile, the exotic hand cannon Sturm is still giving players a +380% damage buff to all outgoing ability damage. Needless to say that is very much not intended. So far, Bungie has disabled the hand cannon in the Trials of Osiris PvP mode, but let the bug slide in PvE. That’s probably because, with the community in near-constant tumult, the studio would rather not be accused of being the fun police.

Perhaps painting itself into a corner, on a recent Bungie livestream the developers said they were pausing any non-critical balance fixes, although Sturm surely qualifies as the kind of critical bug that will have to be fixed sooner rather than later.

And whilst those bugs might sound fun, they are merely the wacky cherries on top of an otherwise fetid cake. Pay a visit to Bungie’s ‘Known Issues’ page for the Edge of Fate and you will find the Magna Carta of bug lists. Here are some random highlights:

  • Players can sometimes be killed immediately upon respawning in the Nightmare of Gahlran Pinnacle Op.
  • A number of Strikes are not completing properly after the final boss has been defeated.
  • Focusing engrams at a Vendor can cause the reward to drop at a lower Power level than what was displayed.

On and on it goes, so much so that I can only feel sorry for Destiny 2’s embattled community team, which forms the frontline when it comes to dealing with players’ understandable fury. No wonder they sound downbeat today:

Still, at least Bungie has seen sense about the recent armor controversy and effectively given players the chance to earn what would have been a paid set of armor as an in-game reward instead. Although honestly the fact I’m giving credit for that is probably a form of Stockholm Syndrome at this point.

6 Best Sex Machines for Solo, Couple, or Long-Distance Playtime (2025)

The popular perception of sex machines (thanks mainly to porn) is usually a dildo on the end of a long rod attached to a motor. That visual might be intimidating, but Lovense made it downright cute with the Lovense Mini Sex Machine (8/10, WIRED Recommends). A smaller, compact version of its flagship product, the Mini has a powerful motor in a small package, with easily adjustable legs that allow you to position the device at the best angle.

Most sex machines—including Lovense’s larger flagship sex machine—are large and heavy, and can be cumbersome to set up, but the Mini reduces almost every pain point, including the price. At $399, it’s the least expensive machine you’ll find on the market without sacrificing much power. In my testing, it could reach up to 280 thrusts per minute, though its low weight meant it was a little more likely to slide on smooth surfaces. That trade-off is worth it for the portability, though. The thrusting motor was also surprisingly quiet. Someone might still overhear you from the other side of a closed door, but I doubt anyone would hear you in a neighboring apartment. Unless you’re trying to be heard, anyway.

The whole machine comes in a box about the size of a toolbox, with a convenient handle. I highly recommend holding on to this box for storing or transporting the machine, but even if you choose not to, the machine’s parts are small enough to fit inside an Ikea-sized cube cubby, and at 7 pounds, it’s light enough to carry wherever you want.

The Lovense Remote app also adds many features ideal for long-distance couples. You can control the speed and pattern of thrusts from anywhere in the world, and built-in text and voice/video call features let you do it all from one app. You can even create and share a Zoom-style link to let someone take control of your device and set the link to expire after a set duration or a certain number of uses.

Solo Bitcoin Miner Gets Lucky, Scores $347K in BTC

A lucky solo Bitcoin miner has successfully mined a block worth over $347,000 on the world’s most competitive crypto network.

On Sunday, an independent miner successfully processed block 913,632 using Solo CKPool, earning a total reward of 3.13 BTC valued at $347,872.

The block contained 593 transactions totaling 473.61 BTC worth $52.6 million, with an average transaction size of 0.7987 BTC, according to blockchain explorer. 



The miner’s reward included the standard base reward of 3.125 BTC plus an additional 0.0042 BTC in transaction fees.

Solo CKPool is a mining service that allows individual miners to participate in Bitcoin mining without operating their own full Bitcoin node, providing an entry point for smaller operations to compete against industrial mining giants.

Though success from individuals is exceedingly rare, as they compete with larger players possessing hundreds of ASICs capable of outcompeting them. 

“Of all blockchain networks out there, there is no comparison when it comes to matching Bitcoin network’s decentralization,” Peter Chung, head of research at Presto Labs, told Decrypt. “These events add to that narrative.”

It’s the second successful block discovery by a solo Bitcoin miner this month, following a similar achievement on September 1. 

Last month, another solo miner hit the jackpot when they solved block 910,440, earning a 3.137 BTC reward worth approximately $365,000. 

Bitcoin’s mining difficulty is currently 136.04 trillion (136.04 T), near record highs, according to YCharts. 

The metric adjusts every 2,016 blocks to keep block times at ~10 minutes, making solo wins “as rare as lottery tickets,” Arjun Vijay, founder of crypto exchange Giottus, told Decrypt.

“The beauty of the Bitcoin proof of work algorithm is that there is no formula and the correct nonce can be found only through a trial and error process,” Vijay said.

But “still there are advantages for large players and pools as they can divide work amongst themselves, reducing effort duplication,” he noted.

For most participants, “it still makes sense to join mining pools to get regular payouts for their efforts instead of betting on such rare outcomes,” he said, adding that “to make Bitcoin more decentralized, we need more pools and not more solo miners.”

Bitcoin is trading at approximately $111,103, up 0.5% in the last 24 hours and 104.3% year-on-year, according to CoinGecko.

Solo Bitcoin Miner Beats the Odds, Scoring $365K BTC Jackpot

An independent Bitcoin miner hit the jackpot Sunday, outgunning the top mining operations that typically solve blocks on the leading cryptocurrency’s network. 

A solo miner solved block 910,440 of the Bitcoin blockchain, bagging a 3.137 BTC reward—worth approximately $365,000 at current prices. 

The block contained 4,913 transactions and was added by a miner using Solo CKPool—a service allowing anonymous miners to get started with a mining hook-up, without the need to run their own full Bitcoin node. 

Miners currently receive 3.125 BTC plus transaction fees for adding a block to the flagship digital coin’s network. 

It’s worth noting that a “solo miner” is just a mining operation using an independent pool that isn’t a big brand or publicly traded company that dominates the Bitcoin mining industry, such as Foundry, MARA, or Luxor. 



Decrypt previously spoke with experts in the space who denied what outspoken influencers on Crypto X sometimes proclaimed: that a “solo miner” hitting the jackpot was necessarily a small operation with little computational power, solving blocks alone. 

Once upon a time, people could mine Bitcoin from their laptops. But as the network has grown and difficulty has increased, miners now typically consist of industrial operations, or warehouses full of expensive computers. 

Mining the biggest cryptocurrency has grown increasingly hard due to difficulty increases and the volatile nature of the digital coin’s price. Miners often have to sell coins or branch into different industries—like AI data centers—to cover operational costs. 

Bitcoin was recently trading for $116,323 per coin, down more than 1% over a 24-hour period, according to CoinGecko.

15 attempts in, I actually love that Elden Ring Nightreign’s Everdark Libra is the first FromSoftware boss who’s harder to beat in co-op than solo

The handshake deal in FromSoftware games, the obfuscated difficulty option that’s always been there since Demon’s Souls, is co-op: Summoning phantoms controlled by other players or the computer⁠. In OG Elden Ring everybody’s best friend was the Mimic Tear, a powerful summon to make a copy of yourself to fight by your side.

This has held true in the co-op centric, roguelike spinoff Nightreign, with the sturdy tripod of a full party clearly being what the experience was catered towards. The new duos mode is nice enough but still slightly compromised, while even with post-launch patches, solo is still the worst way to play.

But now they’ve gone and turned all that on its head: The latest Everdark superboss, the ultra instinct version of Baphomet dealbroker Libra, only gets more challenging the bigger your posse is. I managed to take him down solo after just three runs, while I’m somewhere north of 15 attempts deep in duos and trios, a W still evading me at every turn.

Libra’s already a real piece of work in his base form, tied with end boss Heolstor as the hardest in the game by my reckoning. He has an arsenal of unusual, difficult-to-read projectile attacks that all build up the madness status effect, which does huge damage and a stun if you manage to survive the initial burst.

His signature move is a delayed blast sigil that brutalizes you with madness build-up after a quick beat. It comes out fast enough that you can’t exactly respond to it carefully and can get royally screwed if you’re in the middle of an animation, while a slight delay punishes immediate panic rolling. It is deliciously evil.

Libra’s Everdark form ups the ante by summoning invader clones of the player party with all the same abilities and a number of potential weapon loadouts thoughtfully constructed to inflict the most pain and frustration. Some of my favorites:

  • Mini Malenia Executor: Equipped with the Hand of Malenia Sword and can perform a weaker, but still potentially instant-death version of Waterfowl Dance. Yes, that Waterfowl Dance.
  • Terminator Ironeye: Possesses the Jar Cannon and One-Eyed Shield (which has a built-in cannon), as well as a seemingly-permanent buff resembling the Ironjar Aromatic: He walks extremely slowly but is extra tanky and can’t be interrupted.
  • Sniper Wylder: Uses a greatbow to spam the Rain of Arrows ash of war, doing crazy damage in a huge AoE from long distance.
  • Rot Duchess: Dual wields Scorpion’s Stinger daggers for fast Scarlet Rot buildup.

Much like the player-style NPC enemies of FromSoft’s previous games, they don’t play by the same rules that you do: Malenia-Executor is particularly difficult to interrupt out of his signature move, while all of the clones are capable of dodge rolling out of attack combos a normal player could not.

The pièce de résistance is how they shuffle in: It does not feel like Libra has a consistent timer for summoning a fresh wave of evil twins. Wiping them out is not a guarantee of breathing room to DPS the boss, while it’s far more likely for them to start piling up as you fail to clear out old ones before the new clones spawn in.

The final indignity is that Libra summoning a new wave heals any surviving invaders, buffs their defense and damage, and the buffs stack. A veteran six rounds deep Executor spamming Waterfowl Dance is who I wish I was playing as.

All of this while Libra has new, more aggressive madness-inflicting AOE attacks to fling at you. A mature Everdark Libra fight is pure chaos, a field of evil clones glowing gold with layered buffs, some attacking each other, but most chasing you around like it’s Yakety Sax while Libra turns the field into a bullet hell screen. It’s utterly deranged. I don’t know how a group of randos with no coordination is supposed to beat it. It’s hilarious.

The time is ripe

Whether fully intentional or not, FromSoft’s classical deferred difficulty system works in reverse with Everdark Libra. It’s like a martial arts movie thing or Bruce Wayne climbing out of Bane’s house without the dang rope or something: If the enemy draws its strength from you, make yourself weaker.

Not only is one evil twin far more manageable than triplets, the singleplayer mode’s adjusted health values mean they go down quicker too. Even in the solo runs I failed, I didn’t experience the chaotic pileups of a three-player slugfest.

This inversion is another example of how flexible and surprising FromSoft’s well-worn systems can still be. Yet another boss in Nightreign is challenging in a way that took me off-guard, that wasn’t just another really tall, sad guy with a sword who moves super fast.

That has me even more excited for what the studio does next: After Promised Consort Radahn in Shadow of the Erdtree, I was worried there might be a ceiling to FromSoft’s arms race with itself to make ever greater twitch reflex challenges in its bosses. In Nightreign, the studio sidestepped this issue, proving there’s nothing stopping it from delivering spectacles, challenges, or sheer curveballs we just won’t see coming.

As for the fight itself, it’s a new favorite. Everdark Libra feels like a joke at my expense, a prank played on us players. That’s one of my favorite things to see in a game, and FromSoft is the master when it comes to this rare art.

Could they ease off the gas with the clone spawns just a touch? Maybe, it depends on how soon you ask me after a failed run. Is it kinda bullshit that Vyke’s War Spear, the only melee weapon Libra is weak to, is such a rare drop that I’ve only seen it twice in 111.8 hours (but who’s counting)? Perhaps.

I hope they never nerf Everdark Libra. He’s so stupid. It’s all so meanspirited. I love him like a son.
