Hyper Light Drifter studio’s next game is a cyberpunk metroidvania with Smash Bros-inspired combat, out next month

by admin September 29, 2025

Heart Machine, the studio behind sci-fi Zelda-like Hyper Light Drifter, has a new metroidvania out next month called Possessor(s).

Publisher Devolver released a new gameplay overview trailer over the weekend revealing its PS5 and PC release date of 11th November.

Possessor(s) is a metroidvania (or “search action” game, as the developers are describing it) set in a quarantined cyberpunk city, with players taking the role of high school student Luca who’s struck a deal with a demon.

POSSESSOR(S) Gameplay Overview | PS5 and PC on November 11Watch on YouTube

As with Hyper Light Drifter, the game is visually arresting, here a clean animated aesthetic as Luca explores a cityscape controlled by a corrupt energy megacorporation.

Combat, meanwhile, is inspired by Nintendo’s Smash Bros. fighting series. Luca will be able to juggle enemies with aerial attacks, with makeshift weapons ranging from a computer mouse, to a guitar and a pair of sunglasses.

It’s looking great, especially if it can live up to the exceptional quality of Hyper Light Drifter, though there’s stiff genre competition from Hollow Knight: Silksong at the moment.

Still, Heart Machine in January released a surprising miss with its roguelike Hyper Light Breaker that remains in early access, but has a Mixed rating on Steam. It’s still being regularly updated, though, with the studio acknowledging the “risk” of early access.

XRP and DOGE ETFs Smash Records with $54.7M Combined Day-One Volume

by admin September 19, 2025

Spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tied to the payments-focused XRP XRP$3,0389 and the top meme token, dogecoin DOGE$0.2752, debuted in the U.S. on Thursday with a bang, drawing significant trading volume.

The REX-Osprey XRP ETF, listed on the CBOE under the ticker XRPR, registered a trading volume of $37.7 million, marking the largest debut volume of any ETF launch this year, according to data shared by Bloomberg senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas.

This first-day tally outpaced the previous record holder, Dan Ives’ Wedbush AI Revolution ETF (IVES), signaling strong investor appetite for alternative investment vehicles linked to coins beyond Bitcoin BTC$116 814,85 and Ether (ETH).

XRP’s market capitalization recently surpassed that of traditional banking giant Citigroup. Furthermore, Ripple, the company behind XRP, which facilitates cross-border transactions, has applied for a banking license in the U.S.

Traders also embraced the REX-Osprey Dogecoin ETF, ticker DOJE, which generated a first-day volume of $17 million. This placed DOJE among the top five ETF debuts of the year.

DOJE’s strong performance is notable given Dogecoin’s reputation as a non-serious meme token.

The successful launch of these two ETFs follows the SEC’s decision to approve a new, streamlined listing standard for crypto ETFs, reducing approval times to approximately 75 days from 240 days.

First-day net inflow figures are expected to be released later Friday.

Super Smash Bros mod adds Nintendo cease and desist letter as playable character

by admin September 1, 2025

After facing backlash over a paid Balatro-themed skin for Super Smash Bros. Melee, modder Mooshie turned a fake Nintendo cease and desist letter into a playable fighter.

On August 21, modder Mooshie released a new Super Smash Bros. Melee mod that added Jimbo from Balatro as a skin for Mr. Game & Watch. Sharing the project on Twitter, Mooshie promoted it with the caption: “I put Balatro into Melee! Get it at my newly created Patreon, linked below!”

However, because the mod was initially locked behind a paid Patreon tier, it quickly drew backlash from the community. On August 26, Mooshie issued a lengthy statement apologizing for the rollout and announcing a new approach: all future mods will be free to download, with paid Patreon supporters only receiving early access before public release.

They explained that the decision came after hearing feedback and consulting with other creators, calling the early-access model a “compromise” that ensures mods are playtested while still keeping them accessible to the broader community.

A new foe has appeared: Nintendo cease and desist

On August 31, Mooshie followed up with another project, this time giving Kirby a makeover by turning him into a parody Nintendo cease and desist letter.

While meant as a joke, this mod is available for free on Mooshie’s Patreon, with the showcase tweet reading: “I put my Cease & Desist Letter from Nintendo into Melee! See how much court fines you can stack up against your opponents with this new skin over [COPYRIGHTED CHARACTER]!

While the skin looks like an official takedown notice at first glance, a closer look reveals lines such as “low key that mod do be sick though” and “Your mod too tough. Your Game & Watch too different.” Mooshie has not confirmed receiving any real communication from Nintendo.

The trailer also promises “more real mods soon,” with a cameo from the protagonist of LISA that may hint at what Mooshie is planning next.

Microsoft’s Windows 95 release was 30 years ago today, the first time software was a pop culture smash

by admin August 24, 2025

Microsoft’s momentous Windows 95 operating system became available to the public on this day 30 years ago. Computing enthusiasts were queuing around the block at midnight launch events. Perhaps this was the first time an OS launch became a cultural event – one that was carefully primed by the launch a month earlier, and the Start Me Up advertising campaign.

Windows 95 – Start Me Up – Promo / Commercial (High Quality 720p) – YouTube

Watch On

PC users had access to Windows operating systems, and similar WIMP OSes, before Windows 95. However, Windows 95 was billed as a merger of Microsoft’s DOS and Windows products into a unified whole. Moreover, it brought in a significantly revamped UI, including the Start Button and many other elements we still live with today.

Other welcome features that first became mainstream on PCs thanks to the introduction of Windows 95 include; the 32-bit preemptive multitasking architecture with task bar, plug and play hardware, support for long filenames, and many more.

System requirements

To boost Windows 3.1 migrations, Windows 95’s official requirements presented quite a low bar. Users should have an Intel 386DX processor, 4MB of RAM, a VGA or better display, and make sure to have 55MB of HDD space clear for the installation process.

Recommended settings, for those hoping to make proper use of the new multitasking capabilities, and internet features like MSN and Exchange were higher. For improved usability, Windows 95 would benefit from a 486 or better CPU, 8MB of RAM, an SVGA display, as well as more storage.

It is debatable whether this was the beginning of bloat. For some context, the contemporary Macintosh System 7.5.X required about half the fixed storage of Windows 95.

Windows 95 launch price and success

Windows 95 originally retailed in a box with between 13 and 15 1.44MB floppy disks. You could purchase a full installation version or an upgrade for Windows 3.1 systems. A CD distribution came with a boot floppy, as you would need DOS-level CD-ROM drivers to load before install.

PC enthusiasts at the time would have had to buy a new system with Windows 95 pre-installed or cough up $209, which adjusted for inflation brings us perilously close to $400 in 2025. Just for an OS…

Despite the entry price, Microsoft’s lavish advertising budget and promotional activities paid off. Sales revenue from the release reportedly hit $720 million on day one. Also, a million copies of the OS had been shipped by day four.

In 1996, Microsoft celebrated the one-year anniversary of Windows 95’s release with the claim that it had shipped 40 million units worldwide. By then, the software company could boast of 400 PC manufacturing partners, and that 4,406 software applications were supported.

Gaming and the web

Paving the way for the success to come, it was also noted that 10 of the 11 publishers of the top 20 PC game titles were onboard with Windows 95-based gaming. Moreover, the use of the web was accelerating, with Netscape and Microsoft both releasing their new browsers on 32-bit Windows.

Kirby Air Riders Brings Sakurai’s Smash Experience To A Switch 2 Racing Game

by admin August 24, 2025

When I watch a great pro match of a fighting game like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, my reaction is equal parts awe and bafflement. The sheer speed and hyper-kinetic action flies by so quickly that I can only make sense of a percentage of what I’m seeing, and the people who have mastered the chaos must be a different species. Kirby Air Riders is like that: a bubblegum colorful confection of speed, agility, and action that feels overwhelming, but still fun to play.

My hands-on experience at Gamescom started with some tutorials showing the ropes of handling your ride. The ride accelerates automatically, which may seem like it suggests simplicity, but there’s still a lot of finesse and fine control to handling your ride. Nailing a drift around a corner takes precise timing, and when you take a jump you can get a speed boost with a clean landing–which means tilting your racer slightly to land parallel if you’re coming up on a hill. Those mechanics felt approachable and easy to grasp during the limited time of a demo, but had enough depth that the skill ceiling looks high.

Now Playing: Kirby Air Riders Is Faster, Deeper, and Cleaner Than The Original

This is a sequel to Kirby’s Air Ride, but the shift to Air Riders is a significant one. There’s a particular emphasis on the characters themselves and their unique powers, and this is where I could most keenly sense Masahiro Sakurai’s experience with the Smash Bros. series. It feels like an evolution of that, and bringing that spirit of balancing different power sets into a new racing context.

After the tutorial featured, I played as two different characters: Magalor, the antagonist of Kirby’s Return to Dreamland; and Starman, a recurring Kirby enemy. The riders seem to handle slightly differently, but the major difference is their special moves. Magalor activates a massive beam that shoots behind him, hitting any opponents that are coming up on your tail. By contrast, Starman’s special was not an offensive tool at all. Instead, he could fly into the air on command using your regular spin attack while the special was activated. This seems primarily suited to help reach high places, though in a pinch you could also use it to dodge, at the expense of some speed.

The demo mostly focused on the City Trials mode, which is separated into two parts. First you explore the wide-open hub area gathering power-ups and switching your weak starter vehicle for a better one. There’s a layer of strategy here, as various icons that you collect give you increased defense, weight, boost, and so on. You can use these to compensate for any of your racer’s weaknesses, or make a naturally strong aspect even stronger. Once the first phase is over, everyone’s total power-ups get tallied up and your build gets taken into the second phase. I could imagine that, as players grow more familiar with the game, serious competitive players will start to optimize combinations of racers and air rides with which types of icons they should prioritize for collection.

The build you craft during this first phase has a huge bearing on how competitive you’ll be in the second one. Once all the players tally up their powers, they’re able to choose one of four game types, and the game will recommend one that’s optimized for your build. Some are more combat-focused while others are centered more on racing. I chose the recommended mode in my first game, a combat/racing fusion with Magalor and held my own decently well. For my second game, I picked one of the modes that was not recommended (mainly in order to stay grouped with the other human players in our closed session) and my unoptimized build showed on the almost pure racing track. Plus, Starman’s vertical-focused power just isn’t the best for a regular race around an oval track, but maybe I just need to get good.

Both phases feel extremely fast, so while one is about prepping a build, they both reward skilled play. And it’s easy to see, even from my limited experience, how choosing your rider, finding your ride, and gathering power-ups could lead to a fierce Kirby Air Riders meta, as advanced Air Riders players explore different options to optimize their competitive edge.

For casual players like myself, Kirby Air Riders looks to be a sweet experience to play with friends, especially in couch co-op, fueling a rowdy party atmosphere. But I suspect that there’s going to be a whole other layer of the game, with the speed and skill of a fighting game, and that one seems destined for the competitive stage.
