It’s possible to get Silksong’s double jump in Act 1 well before you’re supposed to, you just have to be enough of a platforming god to prove you don’t need it

Cofy on YouTube has published a video guide for sequence breaking Hollow Knight: Silksong to unlock its double jump, the Faydown Cloak, before you’re supposed to and without the intended prerequisite items. The only catch is that it looks incredibly challenging to pull off, demanding both patience and twitch reflexes.

Both Hollow Knights are deliciously old school in how they make you work for your double jump, withholding it until deep into the game. In Silksong, the Faydown Cloak is located at the top of Mount Fay, past a challenging, platforming-centric level that requires the Clawline, an Act 2 ability. At least, it’s supposed to require the Clawline. For the skip, Cofy needed:

  • The Needolin
  • Swift Step
  • Reaper Crest
  • Drifter’s Cloak
  • Sharpdart

This is already nuts because the Sharpdart itself is designed to require the Faydown Cloak to grab⁠—it’s a Catch 22. But Cofy also has a guide showing the requisite jumping tech to get the Sharpdart before the Faydown Cloak. Sharpdart is a dash attack that Cofy is able to use as a poor man’s Clawline during the climb.

Mount Fay’s only entrance is in the Slab, so you have to get captured by a Wardenfly and finish the prison escape sequence first. After that, it’s mostly just ultra instinct platforming. Cofy seems to use the Reaper Crest’s wider hurtbox to pogo off enemies while practically level with them, instead of above. They also show that it’s possible to jump up the seemingly unclimbable slippery slopes on the mountain.

Cofy’s gnarliest trick, though, is purposefully dying in strategic locations to leave behind a cocoon they can run back and pogo off for extra height, completing otherwise impossible jumps. That just feels particularly hardcore.

After all that, you can, indeed, technically get the Faydown Cloak in Act 1 and without the Clawline. But this isn’t exactly a handy trick for average players to become overpowered early. In fact, many of the YouTube comments on Cofy’s video suggest this means Michael Saves’ Silksong Randomizer mod can be made even more challenging than it already is: Its item spawn pools no longer have to ensure that the Clawline is obtainable outside Mount Fay to avoid softlocking players.

Silksong’s latest public update fixes its worst boss, but not as much as you’re likely hoping

Hollow Knight: Silksong’s hitherto beta-only update 1.0.28650 is now a fully public release that any dang fool can download without switching to a Steam playtest branch. I’m still noodling my way through the lower levels of Team Cherry’s new metroidvania, blissfully unbothered by any pressure to review it or write Silksong walkthroughs. As such, I asked our reviewer James to have a look at the patch notes and pluck out any important changes, based on his many, many hours in Pharloom.


A shadow glided over James’s face, then returned and took up residence in one earhole. Wordlessly he outstretched a gnarled finger towards item 3 on the list: “Fixed Savage Beastfly in Far Fields sometimes remaining below the lava.”


Thus my introduction to the Savage Beastfly, an optional Silksong boss that has two iterations. I’ve now done some background reading on Savage Beastfly and – inasmuch as it’s safe to extrapolate from all-caps forum posts – it appears to be Silksong’s most-hated NPC. Not simply a challenging fight but a crushingly unfair and unpredictable one, in the eyes of many players, with complaints lodged against the inconsistency of the creature’s hitbox, its two-mask damage output, its habit of summoning minions, and the whiteknuckle RNG effect of mixing all these things together.

It doesn’t even look that good, the detractors howl. It’s not like Malenia in Elden Ring. It’s just a mallet with wings. Nobody wants to Rule 34 that thing. Well, some people probably do, because that’s the point of Rule 34, but this particular intersection of masochism and formicophilia seems like a rare gift, indeed.


And all of this merely describes the first iteration of the boss. The second introduces lava and destructible platforms, just for funsies. As such, the now-fixed technical issue above with the Savage Beastfly diving into lava and never returning could be styled a positive. Let the bastard stay in the magma, if it loves magma so much. Let it burn forever in a hell of its own creation.


The loathing is so extreme that there is a whole subreddit dedicated to Savage Beastfly and all its works, with 34,000 weekly visitors. Be warned that the subreddit contains a lot of fake reporting about undiscovered, even tougher Savage Beastfly variants, because if there’s one thing Silksong players like doing, it’s rustling each other’s jimmies.


While the Savage Beastfly does appear to savagely beastfly in the face of sporting boss design, I do inevitably wonder whether a piss-boiling abomination like this is a marketing asset for a game such as Silksong. Bosses that are merely ‘good’ and ‘well-designed’ don’t tend to attract dedicated subreddits. Malenia doesn’t have one, as far as I can tell. Nor do Giygas, Psycho Mantis or Sephiroth. I’m surprised I haven’t seen Savage Beastfly cited more in the on-going discussion of whether Silksong’s overall difficulty is key to the mood, or just contrived.


Anyway, the full patch notes are below. They are essentially unchanged from the beta test last week.

  • Added Dithering effect option in Advanced video settings. Reduces colour banding but can slightly soften the appearance of foreground assets. Defaults to ‘Off’.
  • Updated Herald’s Wish achievement description to clarify that players must both complete the wish and finish the game.
  • Fixed Savage Beastfly in Far Fields sometimes remaining below the lava.
  • Fixed rare cases of Shrine Guardian Seth getting out of bounds during battle.
  • Fixed rare case of Second Sentinel knocking the player out of bounds during battle.
  • Added catch to prevent Lugoli sometimes flying off screen and not returning during battle.
  • Further reduced chance of Silk Snippers getting stuck out of bounds in Chapel of the Reaper battle.
  • Fixed various instances of dying to bosses while killing them causing death sequences to play messily or out of sync.
  • Fixed Shaman Binding into a bottom transition causing a softlock.
  • Cocoon positions in some locations updated to prevent it spawning in inaccessible areas.
  • Fixed Liquid Lacquer courier delivery not being accessible in Steel Soul mode.
  • Fixed some NPCs not correctly playing cursed hint dialogues in certain instances.
  • Fixed Pondcatcher Reed not being able to fly away after singing.
  • Fixed Verdania memory orbs sometimes replaying layered screen-edge burst effects.
  • Fixed the break counter not working for certain multihitter tools eg Conchcutter.
  • Fixed Volt Filament damage multiplier not applying for certain Silk Skills.
  • Fixed Cogflies and Wisps inappropriately targeting Skullwings.
  • Fixed Cogflies incorrectly resetting their HP to full on scene change.
  • Fixed Curveclaw always breaking on the first hit after being deflected.
  • Fixed Plasmium Phial and Flea Brew sometimes not restoring as intended at benches.
  • Various other smaller tweaks and fixes.

Weeks after Silksong’s launch I can’t stop thinking about this streamer’s masterful troll campaign against its fans: ‘They made a whole game about getting to your car but you don’t have car keys, and you’re excited for that?’

I’ve spent a not-insignificant portion of my waking hours the last few weeks thinking (and writing) about Hollow Knight: Silksong, but I may have actually spent more time replaying a description of the game from streamer Northernlion in my head over and over again like a Nick at Nite rerun.

While Silksong was the focal point of online gaming conversation from its late August release date announcement up until the launch of Borderlands 4, Northernlion not only cheerily avoided streaming it alongside other big Twitch channels, but spent the Silksong hype period roasting viewers who asked why he wasn’t playing it.

“Have metroidvania fans ever considered that walking back is not as much fun as walking forward? I guess I’m just a different kind of beast’,” he joked a few days before Silksong’s release. “You can do metroidvanias if you want, but once I finish with something I’m done with it. I’m moving on. Greener pastures. Oh, you need a double-jump to access that door up there? Well, I guess god doesn’t want me to go up there. I’ll be moving to the right. I’ll be moving to the right and jumping onto platforms that are approximately one times my height above me. That’s about it, man. That’s about it.”

In the early 2010s Northernlion amassed a fanbase on YouTube with let’s play videos of The Binding of Isaac, but in recent years has become better known for live interactions with his audience on Twitch streams. At some point his ability to riff on basically any topic started generating a consistent stream of viral goofs, rants, and unbelievable moments—enough to earn him a reputation as “your favorite streamer’s favorite streamer.”

So it was perfectly in character when, straight off the dome, he delivered a perfect stream-of-consciousness takedown of metroidvanias as the gaming equivalent of getting to your car and realizing you forgot your car keys.

“They made a game about that, and you can’t wait for it? You’re excited for that? Are you crazy?”

This is a perfect bit. It is immaculately conceived comedy with an unimpeachable narrative throughline that would leave stand-up comedians who’ve spent months polishing the delivery of worse jokes reeling. Per-second it has delivered me substantially more joy than any of the 20 hours I’ve put into Silksong so far, and I love the game.

“i can’t believe in the middle of the ragebait he plays a puppygirl game out of no where,” reads one of the YouTube comments, reacting to Northernlion booting up a clicker game.

Northernlion’s fanbase has picked up his flair for multilayered and ironic reference-filled in-jokes, as another comment on that same video demonstrates:

“Pro tip: The Lion of the North frequently attempts to Ragebait against the current of the popular. If you do not have the prerequisite endurance or Thick Skin charm, counter by purposefully ignoring his cinema references or feigning absolute indifference towards it. The glass canon nature of this interaction will flip the Soyjak-Gigachad equilibrium to your favour, and soon enough NL will be the irate lion screaming at the calm and composed monkey that is you.”

You can no doubt find an army of YouTubers and Twitch streamers out there currently not playing Silksong, or making videos about why its difficulty is a crime against gamers. But only one who has the composure to blurt out “Shitsong!” and then segue to a diss of James Blunt’s You’re Beautiful. Truly a different kind of beast.

Creation of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Pharloom map reveals cut areas & major changes

As part of the Game Worlds exhibition at ACMI in Melbourne, Australia, we got to see the breakdown of Pharloom’s creation for Hollow Knight: Silksong. We learned just how significantly it changed throughout the course of development.

Hornet was originally planned as an additional character to swap to in 2017’s Hollow Knight. As plans changed and ambitions grew, however, Team Cherry morphed the bonus content into a separate, full-fledged game.

Eight years later, that game is finally upon us as Silksong launched to record-shattering, and well, platform-shattering success. Though despite the sales and critical acclaim, many details surrounding its development timeline remain a mystery.

Slowly but surely, select tidbits are now coming to light, and we just got our best look yet at what really went down over the near-decade-long stretch.

Featured in ACMI’s new Game Worlds exhibition in Melbourne, Australia – which Dexerto was invited to attend ahead of its public opening – Silksong is not only playable, but a great deal of behind-the-scenes information is on display too. It’s here that we learned of Pharloom’s twists and turns from 2017 to what we see today.

ACMI / DexertoThe spotlight was certainly on Silksong at ACMI’s new Game Worlds exhibit.

How Silksong’s map evolved over eight years of development

Next to interactive 3D maps, sprawling charts of boss code, and hand-drawn artwork, one particular feature in the exhibit caught my eye. An interactive timeline charting Pharloom’s evolution from the very first sketch all the way through to the final rendition in today’s 1.0 build.

All the way back in the same year Hollow Knight launched, Team Cherry planned for verticality in its next sprawling adventure. The initial layout seen in that sketch was topped by the ‘City of Song,’ a location housing the final boss chamber. Clearly, this is what we now know as The Citadel. Merely a month later, that name change seemingly came into effect.

By November 2017, many of the map’s bigger spaces were starting to take shape. However, certain areas in this older version didn’t quite make the cut. In particular, we can see an area called the Red Coral Gorge on the left-hand side.

There’s no way of telling what this area may have looked or played like, but based on the name and the vibrant blue visuals, it likely focuses on water-based mechanics and enemies.

After four years in development, the Red Coral Gorge was ultimately removed from the map in September 2021. For what reason? Who’s to say. And there’s no guarantee we’ll ever see what might have come from this unique playspace.

Seven years ahead of Silksong’s release, the first iteration of the Moss Grotto can be seen on the map. Meanwhile, everyone’s favorite, Bilewater, joined the mix in June 2019. Though it wasn’t until August 7, 2025, that the entire map of Pharloom was locked into place.

“So we have a plan…” Team Cherry’s William Pellen told ACMI. “But the plan is never so calcified that it can’t bear a change of course two weeks later, or two months later, or two years later.”

Silksong’s Second Patch Is Revealed But Don’t Get Too Excited

Hollow Knight: Silksong hasn’t been out for even two weeks yet and it’s already getting its second patch. But for anyone still struggling in some of the game’s more brutal boss fights and platforming sections: don’t expect any more relief just yet. The Metroidvania Soulslike’s new update mostly takes aim at some of the smaller bugs fans are facing.

“We’re getting close to finalizing the second post-release patch for Hollow Knight: Silksong,” Team Cherry announced on Steam on Tuesday. “Where the first patch dealt mainly with critical issues, this next one focuses on a few still remaining, while also cleaning up some bugs around specific tools.”

While not live in the game on PC or console yet, players can test the fixes in the public beta branch on Valve’s storefront while the developers work on adding a few more fixes and improvements. Here’s the full patch notes so far for Silksong update 2:

– Added Dithering effect option in Advanced video settings. Reduces colour banding but can slightly soften the appearance of foreground assets. Defaults to ‘Off’.

This patch will arrive as players continue to debate Silksong‘s difficulty and whether some of the more challenging sections are hard for a reason or just annoying for no reason. The game’s first patch took aim at some of these complaints, including making the dreaded Moorwing boss fight easier to survive. There’s also been some debate over whether Silksong is too stingy with Rosary Beads, its main currency for purchasing equipment, unlocking benches (save spots), and other important resources for the adventure.

Even some super fans of the original Hollow Knight claim to have bounced off the sequel due to the more punishing gameplay. Team Cherry hasn’t signaled yet if it plans to eventually make deeper changes to Silksong to address some of these concerns, or add difficulty settings to help struggling players experience more of its excellent world and story.

Team Cherry has detailed what’s planned for Hollow Knight: Silksong’s second patch, but don’t expect any balance changes as with the first.


“Where the first patch dealt mainly with critical issues,” the studio said in the patch notes, “this next one focuses on a few still remaining, while also cleaning up some bugs around specific tools”.


This second patch is now live in Steam’s public-beta branch, with further tweaks expected before full release on all platforms – it’s currently unknown when that will be.

Silksong’s surprise release was “a little callous”, says Hell is Us creative director

Hell is Us creative director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête called the surprise release of Hollow Knight: Silksong “a little callous”, believing it had an impact on his game’s sales.


Rogue Factor’s adventure game was already locked in for its release ahead of Team Cherry’s announcement, but the two games eventually released on the same day.


“When you know you’re that big, I think a shadow drop is a bit like – wow,” said Jacques-Belletête on Skill Up’s Friends Per Second podcast. “As the ‘GTA 6 of indie’… to shadow drop something like this is a little callous.”

After Team Cherry’s announcement, the Hell is Us development team discussed with publisher Nacon whether to change the date. “It was a real thing,” said Jacques-Belletête.


However, the “real pain in the ass”, Jacques-Belletête explained, is that changing release date means refunding pre-orders. And while that wasn’t a deciding factor, the team believed they could weather the storm.


Still, Jacques-Belletête admitted Silksong’s release did impact the launch of Hell is Us. “I don’t have any specific numbers,”he said, “at least not at this time. But for sure it did.”


Above all, Jacques-Belletête highlighted the difficulties of finding an appropriate release window in the current climate.


“That’s the thing nowadays, honestly – getting a window where you’re pretty much alone is almost impossible,” he said. “15 years ago, the mid-end of the summer was always a dead period. But there’s no such thing anymore. It’s just constant madness.”

Plenty of games did change their release date in the wake of Silksong’s launch, including Demonschool and Baby Steps.


“Hell is Us is an absorbing, nightmarish meditation on the horror of war, but divisive design choices prove tedious,” reads our Hell is Us review.

Hell Is Us Dev Is A Little Salty Over Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Shadow Release

After years of anticipation, Team Cherry only gave the video game industry and players two weeks notice that Hollow Knight: Silksong was about to arrive on September 4. While a handful of indie games were moved away from that date, Rogue Factor had already staked out the same release date for Hell is Us six months earlier. Now, Hell is Us’ creative director is sharing his belief that Silksong’s shadow drop negatively impacted Hell is Us’ sales, and he doesn’t sound happy about it.

Jonathan Jacques-Belletête acknowledged that Team Cherry had the right to pick any date it wanted to during his appearance on the Friends Per Second podcast (via This Week in Video Games). However, Jacques-Belletête feels that the decision to do so on such short notice was “a little callous.”

“When you know you’re that big, I think a shadow drop is a bit like–‘wow,'” said Jacques-Belletête. “As the ‘GTA 6 of indie’ … to shadow drop something like this is a little callous.”

According to Jacques-Belletête, discussions were held between Rogue Factor and publisher Nacon about delaying Hell is Us. But there were too many complicating factors, including the need to refund any pre-orders that had already been placed.

“We decided to keep the date, and I’m happy that we did,” added Jacques-Belletête. “We’re still much bigger than some of the smaller ones who would have gotten a lot more affected and who decided to change their dates. Changing the date of Hell Is Us would have been a pretty big [endeavor].”

Jacques-Belletête went on to note that he believes Silksong’s release hurt Hell is Us’ sales, but also acknowledged that he doesn’t currently have the sales numbers available to illustrate that point.

As for Silksong, it debuted with a massive concurrent player count on Steam during its first weekend. A common complaint about the game is that it’s too difficult, and mods designed to make Silksong easier were released almost immediately. Team Cherry subsequently released its own patch to lower Silksong’s difficulty.

I just found out I’ve been using Silksong’s powerful Thread Storm ability wrong this entire time

I’m making my way slowly to the end of Act One in Silksong, and one of my mainstays has been Thread Storm, a powerful AOE multihit ability that can be acquired fairly early on. But I’ve been a fool: despite using the attack in multiple boss fights, I actually haven’t been getting as much damage out of it as I could’ve. Thanks to a PSA video from Jason Mondal on YouTube, I only just learned how to use Thread Storm to its full potential.

Instead of pressing or holding right bumper on a controller once to activate the ability, you can rapidly mash the button to extend its duration without using more silk, giving you more damage per cast. The only downside is that this leaves you vulnerable to a counterattack for longer, but that’s kind of the basic tradeoff of Thread Storm already.

My preferred deployment is at a diagonal, up and slightly to the side of a boss to get them in the AOE while having a good chance of avoiding any attacks. Against enemies who can be staggered by Thread Storm, though, there’s practically no disadvantage to using its max duration⁠—this ability can be a huge help during any of those tricky wave fights.

Where to find Thread Storm in Hollow Knight: Silksong

You can grab Thread Storm in the second half of Act One, in the Greymoor area. Instead of traveling west on the critical path to Bellhart, go east, past where Shakra is selling the map for the area, until the path dead ends at a building you can enter.

Inside, you’ll find a tough wave fight that, frustratingly, Thread Storm would be a great help for. Beating this encounter causes ladders of balloons to spawn outside: You can perform a downward attack in the air to pogo off of them, climbing to the top of the room and the entrance to a new area. The shrine with Thread Storm is at the end of a platforming section in this final room.

Hollow Knight: Silksong’s surprise release date was “a little callous,” says Hell is Us lead

Hell is Us’ creative director, Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, has described Team Cherry’s surprise reveal of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release date just two weeks before its launch as “a little callous.”

As reported by This Week in Videogames, Jacques-Belletête appeared in the most recent episode of Skill Up’s Friends Per Second podcast, where he discussed his and Rogue Factor’s experience releasing soulslike Hell is Us on the same day that Hollow Knight: Silksong was released, having had only two weeks’ notice that both games would release on September 4, 2025.

“We all jumped on our phones really quickly, with our publisher [Nacon] and all sorts of things like that,” Jacques-Belletête said, describing the moment the studio discovered Team Cherry had unexpectedly announced Hollow Knight: Silksong’s long-awaited release date in a trailer posted on August 21, 2025.

“I mean, they’re allowed to do what they did; there’s no laws or rules against that,” he continued. “And I don’t want to say: ‘they caused this to us or somebody else’. I don’t really care about that. I don’t want to get into that type of debate.

“But when you know you’re that big, a shadow drop is a bit like ‘wow.’

“As the GTA 6 of indie – and I know now this term gets thrown left and right, but in the industry that’s already how we were calling such a game – to shadow drop something like this is a little callous.”

Hell is Us was first announced in April 2022, with a release window slated for the following year. In October 2023, Rogue Factor announced the game was delayed until 2025, with its final September 2025 release date revealed during Sony’s State of Play livestream in February 2025.

After learning about Team Cherry’s plans to release Hollow Knight: Silksong on the same day, Rogue Factor “decided to keep the date,” said Jacques-Belletête. “And I’m happy that we did.”

“We’re still much bigger than some of the smaller [studios] who would have [been] a lot more affected and decided to change their dates,” he continued. “Changing the date of Hell is Us would have been a pretty big endeavour.”

When asked whether changing Hell is Us’ release date would have been feasible, Jacques-Belletête explained that “the real pain in the ass” of doing so was that the studio would have had to reimburse and refund player pre-orders.

He did clarify, however, that the decision to keep the date was not “just” because of this.

“We were also like ‘no, I think we can get through the storm’. But it was a thing.”

“That day, a lot of emails, texts, and messages went back and forth between a lot of people, between us and our publisher,” he continued. “It was a real thing.”

Hollow Knight: Silksong surpassed half a million concurrent players following its launch, while Hell is Us’ all-time peak concurrent player count stands at 4,431 (according to SteamDB).

When asked whether he believes Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release impacted Hell is Us’ performance, Jacques-Belletête said: “I can’t prove it, I don’t have any specific numbers, at least not at this time. But, I mean, for sure. For sure it did.”

Jacques-Belletête did emphasise, however, that “it’s not just Silksong” that had an impact on Hell is Us’ release, pointing to Bloober Team’s Cronos: The New Dawn, released on September 5, 2025, as an example of another title released during the same period. “It was busy.”

“That’s the thing nowadays, getting a window where you’re pretty much alone is almost impossible,” Jacques-Belletête continued.

“15 years ago, kind of the mid to end of the summer was always a dead period. But there’s no such thing anymore. It’s constant madness.
