Castlevania & Devil May Cry showrunner plots Duke Nukem series after acquiring rights

by admin June 21, 2025

The man behind Netflix’s Castlevania and Devil May Cry series has yet another series in the works after buying the rights to Duke Nukem.

Netflix has been fully embracing video game IPs by releasing a slew of animated shows based on them.

The streaming service stunned audiences with Cyberpunk Edgerunners, The Witcher, Arcane, Tomb Raider, and has Splinter Cell: Deathwatch coming later in 2025.

As it turns out, yet another project appears to be in the works. Adi Shankar, the showrunner for Netflix’s Devil May Cry and Castlevania, has revealed he’s acquired the rights to Duke Nukem.

In an interview with Esquire, Shankar was asked about what he was working on next and explained that he had video games in production with more DMC on the way.

“I’m being approached with different IPs and companies that want to work with me,” he said. “I bought the rights to Duke Nukem.”

According to Shankar, while he didn’t buy the gaming rights to Duke Nukem from Gearbox, but could be making a movie or TV series instead.

Shankar already has ideas for Duke Nukem, too. The 90s FPS icon hasn’t had much in the way of media attention lately, especially after the disastrous release of Duke Nukem Forever in 2011.

“It’s a middle finger to everybody,” Shankar said of his vision for his version of Duke Nukem.

“When Duke Nukem blew up, a bunch of people sat around trying to turn it into a brand, when it’s just a middle finger. Duke Nukem can’t be made by a corporation, because the moment a corporation makes Duke Nukem, it’s no longer Duke Nukem. I don’t intend on having anyone tell me what to do on this one.”

It’s also unclear how this project may impact Legendary Entertainment’s Duke Nukem film after the studio acquired the rights to make a movie back in 2022.

This all said, Duke is still on the backburner as Shankar works on DMC Season 2 and wants to absolutely dominate the competition on Netflix.

“I have goals. I want to body Arcane, surpass it in viewership… Arcane is the Joker lighting cash on fire, and it’s great,” he said. “With season 2 of Devil May Cry, I want to beat that. Show up to a tank fight with a water balloon and destroy the tank. Because that’s cool.”

Star Trek Beyond writer Doug Jung announced as showrunner for Amazon’s Mass Effect series

by admin June 9, 2025

Star Trek Beyond writer Doug Jung has been appointed showrunner of Amazon Prime’s Mass Effect adaptation.

As reported by Deadline, Jung will also serve as executive producer on the project. Jung is currently executive producer and showrunner of Apple TV+’s Chief of War. He also has credits on series including Mindhunter, Banshee, and Big Love.

Jung will join writer Dan Casey, who is also an executive producer on the project. Electronic Arts’ Michael Gamble, Cedar Tree Productions’ Karim Zreik, and Arad Productions’ Ari Arad and Emmy Tu will also produce.

Amazon’s Mass Effect adaptation was greenlit last November, when Casey’s involvement was also announced.

The streaming platform has found major success with its adaptation of the Fallout franchise, with its second season premiering later this year. It has also been renewed for a third season.

Star Trek Beyond co-writer joins Mass Effect TV series as a showrunner

by admin June 9, 2025

Things are picking up on the Mass Effect TV series. Over the weekend, it was announced that Doug Jung – known for his work on the upcoming Chief of War and as a co-writer for Star Trek Beyond – has joined Amazon’s Mass Effect TV series as a showrunner.

As reported by Deadline, Jung will executive produce the upcoming show with writer Dan Casey. They will be working alongside Michael Gamble from EA, Karim Zreik of Cedar Tree Productions via its overall deal at Amazon, as well as Ari Arad (Uncharted, Borderlands) and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions.

Casey has been writing the Mass Effect TV show for “almost a year”, the publication noted. Amazon officially announced a Mass Effect TV show was in development in November last year, when Casey’s involvement was initially confirmed.

While we don’t know any casting details at the present time, fem Shep actress Jennifer Hale previously told Eurogamer she would love to be part of the Mass Effect series, and believes the original cast should be involved as well. Meanwhile, once upon a time Henry Cavill said he would “love” to be a part of a Mass Effect TV adaptation, however following his time in The Witcher the actor has now been snapped up for Amazon’s Warhammer shenanigans.

As for the world of video games themselves, Mass Effect 5 has been announced, but lacks a release date and appears to still be several years away.

In October, project director Michael Gamble said Mass Effect 5 will not seek to tweak the sci-fi franchise’s established visual style. This is something developer BioWare did with its recent release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

The Long-Awaited ‘Mass Effect’ Show Has a Showrunner Now

by admin June 8, 2025

Prime Video’s upcoming Mass Effect show is progressing slowly, but surely. On Friday, Deadline revealed the live-action series gained Doug Jung as its showrunner.

Jung, who most may remember as the co-writer for 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, recently ended a showrunner/executive producer stint for Apple TV+’s Chief of War. He’ll be working alongside writer Dan Casey, and both will EP for the series alongside franchise producer Mike Gamble. As Deadline notes, this is a “major step forward” in the show’s development, which was first teased all the way back in 2021, then had its existence reaffirmed back in 2024.

To date, Prime Video’s kept mum on what exactly Casey’s pitch was for the Mass Effect show. Among fans, the general thinking is that it’ll just adapt the initial trilogy of Commander Shepard gathering allies to fight the Reapers. (This also seemed to be the plan when a movie seemed likely back in 2007 after the first game came out.) But shows like Castlevania and Prime Video’s own Fallout have taken a different approach that tells an original story inside the worlds of those series. (Fallout in particular carries itself like a Fallout 5 we’re getting to watch but not play.) Others, like Tomb Raider and Dragon Age, continued (or hoped to) the stories of the games they’re based on.

There’s certainly different routes for the Mass Effect series to take, and we’ll be interested to learn Jung and Casey’s approach in due time.

The ‘Wheel of Time’ Showrunner Still Hopes Its Story Continues Elsewhere

by admin June 6, 2025

Fans haven’t given up on The Wheel of Time—the Robert Jordan epic fantasy adaptation that was just abruptly cancelled by Amazon after three seasons—and neither has showrunner Rafe Judkins. Prior to what turned out to be the show’s final outing on Prime Video, Judkins spoke about his commitment to finishing The Wheel of Time‘s story, and he’s renewing that vow in a new social media post.

Judkins took to Instagram to share his reaction to the cancellation (he feels fans’ pain, that much is clear), praise his collaborators, and weigh in on the current state of the TV industry. Here’s the full statement:

“I’ve been asked the same questions many times the last week—why was The Wheel of Time cancelled? And the truth is, I don’t know. I wish I could say something clear and tidy that explains to all of us who love it why it’s coming to an end, but sadly, I can’t.

What I can say is that the actors and crew on our show are the most talented and wonderful group of people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. And we’ve all been incredibly lucky to make something that not only was beloved by fans (and even critics! ha!), but was also watched by huge numbers of people all over the world, appearing in the Nielsen Top 10 for nearly 20 weeks, a feat very few shows have been able to match in the last decade.

One of my core goals in making this show, even from the earliest crafting of the pitch, has been to tell the whole story. Because the Wheel of Time books do what television has always done best—get better as they go. And as our actors and team came on board, they too could see the potential if we were allowed to finish this incredible story. We made many sacrifices, both personal and creative, along the way to get to that ending, so coming up short feels like a devastating blow for all of us.

Much has been written about this larger trend in TV toward fewer seasons with less episodes and finding quicker ways to acquire additional streaming subscribers. But I genuinely believe this goes against the fundamental strength of television—long-form storytelling. It is an art form, much like epic fantasy, which at its very best, gives people a place to go and spend time with the characters that they love year after year. And I believe there are executives, studios, and networks who know that. I believe that we will find our way through this current iteration of the industry and back to what we do best—bringing great characters into people’s living rooms and lives every week.”

Finally, Judkins offered some hope for Wheel of Time‘s future, referencing another fan-favorite series that got a joyfully unexpected resurrection after being cancelled.

“Will Wheel of Time get to do that with another network and finish the story? Sadly, it’s not something that happens often. But it does happen. In fact, one of the reasons we first chose Amazon as a home for the show was because they were in the midst of picking up The Expanse after SYFY cancelled it. So, who knows, perhaps the Wheel of Time show will do what the books have always managed to do since day one—defy the traditional definitions of ‘beginnings’ and ‘ends’. I certainly hope it does—because this book series and these fans deserve to see the story finished.”

We’ll keep you posted if and when The Wheel of Time does indeed find a new home on a different streamer. Considering the reason given for the Wheel of Time being cancelled was financial concerns, it’d have to be a deep-pocketed outlet. Maybe Netflix will pull a Lucifer-style rescue and add another fantasy title to its library, especially now that The Sandman is ending soon?

‘The Sandman’ Showrunner Still Maintains 2 Seasons Was the Plan All Along

by admin May 28, 2025

Hollywood is no stranger to doing damage control when a creative person does or is accused of something so distressing it affects the projects they’re associated with. Think Ezra Miller, Jonathan Majors, or Neil Gaiman—the latter being a particularly notable case because when he was first hit with sexual abuse allegations, which he has denied, he was involved with multiple TV series. That includes two much-loved titles: Good Omens on Prime Video and The Sandman on Netflix.

Good Omens‘ solution was to have Gaiman, co-author of the original novel and showrunner/creator of the series, first step back from being involved with production on what had already been confirmed as the show’s third and final season. Then, it was announced that in lieu of a full third season, the Amazon show would close out its story with a single 90-minute special.

The situation is a little different with The Sandman. After a very well-received first season, the show was renewed in 2022 and a Netflix press release shared at the time promised “the Sandman world will continue to expand” with “with more episodes and stories to be adapted from multiple Sandman graphic novels.” The announcement didn’t specify how many seasons that might include.

However, in late January 2025, Netflix confirmed season two would be The Sandman‘s final outing. In a Variety story released at that time, showrunner Allan Heinberg shared a statement that read in part: “The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season.”

In April, fans learned that The Sandman‘s two-part final season would arrive in July, wrapping up the show for good. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Heinberg re-emphasized his earlier claim that two seasons of Sandman was something the team had been planning around for some time: “It was a decision we made three years ago.”

He framed Netflix’s announcement, made at the height of Gaiman-adjacent negative press, that The Sandman would return for a second and final season as “unfortunate timing, for sure.” He told the magazine the Gaiman stories started to hit just as The Sandman was close to finishing production and moving into postproduction.

“I can’t say that it affected our process, which is scheduled years in advance,” Heinberg said. “It’s been in the periphery of my experience and the background of my experience, but it hasn’t been part of the world of the making of the show, if that makes sense. Every production is its own little island.”

The Sandman season two drops its first block of episodes July 3, with the final block arriving July 24.

The Last of Us TV showrunner confirms four season plan, says “no way” to wrap things up in three

by admin May 20, 2025

Craig Mazin, the showrunner behind HBO’s acclaimed live-action TV adaptation of The Last of Us, has confirmed the team is working to a four season plan, insisting there’s “no way” the narrative can be wrapped up in three seasons.

This isn’t the first time the magic number four has been floated in regard to The Last of Us’ TV adaptation, of course. Mazin started the chatter all the way back in 2023, suggesting the show could “end up being three or five [seasons]. But four seems like a good number. Some seasons, because of the story we’re telling, will need fewer episodes and some will need more.”

Then earlier this year, HBO exec Francesca Orsi mirrored those comments, saying it was “looking like four seasons” for the adaption, but stressed HBO didn’t have “a complete or final plan”. Instead, she appeared to defer to Mazin, adding, “I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it’s looking like this season and then two more seasons after this and we’re done.”

And now Mazin has seemingly made that official in an interview with Collider. Discussing the big Joel moment that kicked off season two, Mazin explained, “It’s so impactful. It’s such a narrative nuclear bomb that it’s hard to wander away from it. We can’t really take a break and move off to the side and do a Bill and Frank story. I’m not sure that will necessarily be true for Season 3. I think we’ll have a little more room there.”

“There’s a decent chance that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2,” he elaborated, “just because the manner of that narrative and the opportunities it affords us are a little different… but certainly, there’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.”

As for season two, there’s just one episode to go following this week’s sixth instalment. Opinions on the second season have been a little more mixed compared to the widely acclaimed original, with Eurogamer’s The Last of Us superfan Victoria Kennedy recently pondering if Mazin and team might have bitten off more than they can chew.
