Controversial shooter Ready or Not passes 13m copies sold across platforms

Controversial and violent shooter Ready or Not has now sold over 13m copies across platforms.

In a press release, developer Void Interactive added that its game – which was released on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in July of this year, following a spell of PC exclusivity – has sold over 3m copies on consoles. That means Ready or Not has sold over 2m copies on consoles in under two months.

Ready or Not initially released in early access back in 2021, and soon after this Void Interactive said it had parted ways with publisher Team17.

Earlier this year, Void Interactive said that Ready or Not’s console port needed changes “as absolutely required by our first party partners” before it could be released on Xbox and PlayStation. This included tweaks to dismemberment and gore, nudity, mistreatment of children, and “explicit representations of violence”. This move ignited a certain amount of backlash from the game’s community, with some leaving negative Steam reviews citing “content censorship”.

Void Interactive sought to quell these concerns soon after, stating it had seen “misconceptions and misinformation circulating around the scope of these changes”.

Left 4 Dead creator teasing new four player co-op shooter

Left 4 Dead creator Mike Booth has announced he is working on a new four-player co-op shooter.

In a post shared on reddit over the weekend, Booth said the upcoming game will be “built on the foundations of what made [Left 4 Dead] special”, though he stopped short of giving his new project a name or indeed any concept art.

However, in the words of the developer, “if you enjoyed the teamwork, tension, and replayability of my past games, you’ll probably find this one interesting”.

Booth added this shooter will expand on the co-op gameplay formula in “ways I’ve wanted to explore for a long time”. Curious.

Booth currently works for Bad Robot Games, which is a subdivision of JJ Abrams’ film and TV production company announced in 2018. In his reddit post, Booth said the team is still in the “early stages” of the shooter’s development. There are, however, going to be playtests for a limited number of participants. Left 4 Dead’s creator is making a comeback to create the next big co-op shooter

Left 4 Dead creator and lead designer Mike Booth announced that he’s stepping back into game development and feels that there’s some unfinished business. He’s aiming to make the next big co-op shooter.

Left 4 Dead is a series that has only two games, both of which are close to two decades old at this point. However, these two titles still have an iron grip on the games industry, with their influence being tangible to this day.

Mike Booth, the main creator and lead designer of the original game, is coming back with a completely different studio backing him to try and make lightning strike the same spot twice.

What’s more, they’re far enough along in development that they’ve started taking playtest applicants.

Mike Booth’s career has hopped around a lot since leaving Turtle Rock Studios in 2012. He was with the studio through Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 but left to join Blizzard and work on an unannounced project.

Turns out this project “wasn’t a good fit” for the company according to Booth himself, and he left to go work with Facebook (now Meta) on VR projects.

These days he works with Bad Robot Games, a subdivision of JJ Abrams’ film and TV production company of the same name. They’ve got a newly formed internal development studio that’s backing Mike Booth’s vision and has been working on this game for a while.

“I’m Mike Booth (creator of Left 4 Dead), and I’m excited to share that I’m working on a brand new project —a 4-player co-op shooter built on the foundations of what made L4D special,” he explained in a Reddit post.

“If you enjoyed the teamwork, tension, and replayability of my past games, you’ll probably find this one interesting. It expands on the co-op formula in ways I’ve wanted to explore for a long time.”

And, while it’s not close to release by the sound of it, he has opened up a signup form for playtesters to get some early opinions on the title. You can sign up for that playtest here.

Upon signing up, there’s a small bit of information about the title, the only thing we currently know about this game other than it being a co-op shooter: It’s currently called “Project Tacoma”.

It remains to be seen if Mike Booth can recapture the magic of Left 4 Dead and create a genre-defining title all these years later. However, considering that the core Left 4 Dead series has no sign of getting a new entry from Valve, fans are excited to potentially get a new game.

Most of the time, I’m an FPS guy: third-person shooters tend to lack the immersive qualities of first-person bang-bang, and the weird over-the-shoulder perspective makes aiming a headache (which I am sure has nothing to do with the fact that I don’t play many TPS games). But every now and then one comes along that’s just too good to ignore, which very circuitously brings us to the point: The new Steam TPS Fest, a week-sale that’s all about disembodied gunplay.

“It’s a fest full of games in the third person,” the TPS Fest page says helpfully. “And those persons are shooters.” And indeed they are, but in terms of specific genre—at least as defined by Steam—there’s quite a range to choose from: 569 action games, 276 adventures, 101 RPGs, 81 “casual” games, 63 strategy, 54 sims, eight sports games, and—somehow–two racing games. (I suspect someone may be playing a little fast-and-loose with some of those designations.)

Anyway, the pick of the litter as far as I’m concerned has to be Control Ultimate Edition, which includes the base game, The Foundation and AWE expansions, and all other additional content for just $4/£3.29/€4—90% off the regular price. That’s a whole lot of videogame for four bucks, and Control really is primo stuff—and, I have to admit, its extremely effective blend of gunplay and powers almost certainly works better in third person than it would as an FPS.

My personal favorite, though, is Max Payne 3, and I mention it specifically because it’s grossly underrated and deserves the love—and if you haven’t played the first two and don’t especially want to, this final part of the trilogy works perfectly well as a standalone game. It’s an incredibly cinematic shooter, very different from Remedy’s take on the character (which is mainly why it tends to be not as well regarded) but easily up to their level. For $6/£5.39/€6, you won’t regret it.

And if you do want to play the first two Max Payne games (and you should), you can also get those on the cheap. Take note, however, that the Max Payne Complete Pack bundle, which includes all three games, actually costs more right now than buying the games separately. I have no idea why and it might be changed at some point, but for now double-check before you push the button.

Helldivers 2, one of the most popular third-person games to come along in years, is actually not on sale right now, but that’s okay because Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint and Ghost Recon Wildlands are, and they’re both a lot of fun, especially if you can jump in with a friend or two.

Breakpoint had an infamously tough start but Ubisoft did a good job of whipping it into shape with post-launch updates, and for $6/£5/€6—90% off—it’s a solid pick. Wildlands is actually 50 cents more than Breakpoint for some reason, and I quite like it too, but honestly you don’t need both. Breakpoint would be my pick, but maybe check to see what your friends are already into if you’re not sure which way to go.

Earth Defense Force 6—I used to work with a guy who was a big fan of the EDF games, and this one is a solid addition to the series. Half-price, $30/£25/€30.

Star Wars Outlaws may not be the most original Star Wars idea, but it’s still a very good game—I’d probably play it myself, except I really don’t like Star Wars. If you do, you can score this one for $31.49/£27/€3149, less than half the regular price. If you’re not sure, there’s a demo so you can get a feel for what it’s all about.

Senior editor Wes Fenlon is a big Risk of Rain fan, and that’s good enough for me: Risk of Rain 2 is 67% off, taking it down to $8.24/6.59/€8.24.

If you like a little survival horror mixed in with your firefights, The Callisto Protocol is down to $9/£7.49/€9, 85% off. It wasn’t a huge hit but it does what it does quite well.

And one more, although there’s a lot more to rifle through than just what I’ve mentioned here: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is 95% off, taking it to just $3.49/£3/€3.49. And sure, it had problems, was probably a bad idea right from the jump, but if you can’t get three bucks of fun out of this thing, I think we have to consider the possibility that it might be a “you” problem.

So there you have it, even more ways to spend your money on Steam. You’re welcome. Steam’s Third Person Shooter Fest is live now and runs until September 1—after that, you get a week off and then it’s time for the Steam Political Sim Fest. No, I am not kidding.

WTF is Waifu Tactical Force? A genuinely good shooter with Valorant and Titanfall inspiration

At first glance, Waifu Tactical Force might seem like a joke, thanks to its name and aesthetic, but after playing it at Gamescom, I was pleasantly surprised to find there is a really polished and engaging shooter to enjoy.

Putting the Waifu thing to one side – the weapons feel great, the animations are crisp, and the map I tried had a bright, stylish look that gave off Valorant vibes.

The developers explained that their biggest inspiration for movement came from Apex Legends and Titanfall, and it shows. Sliding, double jumps, and more movement options with certain abilities keep matches fast and vertical.

They are still debating whether to add wall-running or wall-jumping, and early access players are just as split on the idea. Whatever direction they choose, the core movement already feels tight and responsive.

Team WaifuThe movement is very Apex Legends and Titanfall-inspired.

The demo focused on small-scale, round-based matches with options for 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3. I could only play on a controller for the demo too, which wouldn’t be my preference, and the game is clearly intended for keyboard and mouse. The developers mentioned aim assist is something they are looking at for the future, and it will be necessary if controller players are to keep pace.

Between rounds, you can spend points on upgrades, from small bonuses to faster stamina regeneration, and possibly overpowered double damage (trading off slower reloads and half the magazine size). There will be some balancing still required here, but no matter what upgrades you choose, winning definitely depends on raw gun skill – this is no hero shooter.

Weapons are grounded and familiar, with a few twists. There is a smart pistol secondary, very obviously inspired by Titanfall 2, while the red dot sight on one rifle had a heart-shaped reticle that added a playful touch. It is part of the balance the developers are aiming for, mixing the silly waifu aesthetic with a serious tactical shooter.

Internally, they joke about calling it a “modern military shooter for people with brainrot” or simply “Wives of Duty.”

Why Waifus?

So, let’s address the elephant in the room. The demo featured three waifus, with more planned, and they are not hero characters with unique powers. Instead, abilities are tied to your loadout and chosen before matches, which keeps the focus firmly on gunplay.

So why exactly are they waifus? Just because, really. The developers, Team Waifu, wanted to stand out, and that is reason enough. Especially with all the samey shooters out there to choose from.

But before long, they realized they had a very talented team making a really good game – it wasn’t a joke. Oh, and they are all big anime fans, obviously.

Team WaifuDuring gameplay, I forgot I was running around as a Waifu.

Producer Bernardo Paz explained that there is also a story, and players will be rewarded for engaging with the narrative and building up their own army of waifus. It is still in progress, but it should add a layer of progression alongside the competitive matches.

Waifu Tactical Force is planned for release in 2026, but players can already request to join the playtest on Steam.

Based on my session, you shouldn’t write it off as just a silly idea for a shooter. Beneath the anime exterior is a well-crafted shooter that’s smooth, fast, and skill-based. And it definitely has the kind of unique hook that could go viral on Twitch if the right streamers pick it up.

But the challenge for Waifu Tactical Force will be convincing a wider audience that it deserves to be taken seriously. For now, it is one of the most surprising and genuinely fun games I’ve tried at Gamescom.

Pragmata’s blend of shooting and hacking is the most stressful new idea I’ve seen in a shooter in generations, and it’s brilliant

We’ve said it before, here, already: Pragmata represents Capcom at its weird, experimental best. To me, it’s in line with Exoprimal and Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess as a game that shows the publisher is confident to let its studios run with any ideas they have. Whilst those two may not have been commercial (or in Exoprimal’s case, critical) successes, I think Pragmata has a bigger shot at penetrating through the mainstream thanks to three key things: it’s a shooter, its main character is more of an everydad – his name is Hugh Williams, for goodness sake – and it has one of the most exciting genre hybrids I’ve seen in a while.

In a recent demo at Capcom’s offices ahead of Gamescom, the publisher let me loose on a new demo of the game: a slightly beefier version of the Summer Games Fest demo Alex wrote about in the preview above. The main difference took the form of a boss fight against a mechanised walker that stomped all over an arena that’s also an elevator (standard) that put me in mind of Lost Planet, Vanquish, and I guess… Watch Dogs?

Like I said, it’s a really peculiar grab bag of genres glued together with what seems like a plot that would have to have more structure to be paper thin. But that doesn’t matter. I don’t think people are going to be picking this one up expecting a Hugo-winning tale of redemption and loss, to be honest. What you get with Pragmata, instead, is a very video game-y video game. Strafing around shooting a boss that looks like something from Metal Gear’s cutting room floor whilst a young girl that’s also an android hacks into its systems is peak video game. For me, this is a good thing.

Everything about the demo is peak video game. Hugh wanders around gruffly, muttering about whatever as he solves simple environmental puzzles, exchanging a little bit of mumbly dialogue with Diana (the android). Every now and then, the GLaDOS-like security system wakes up some robot goons that you need to kill, and you push on. The mob enemies all have shields, so Diana needs to hack them before you shoot them. It’s pretty, with this nice clean space station sci-fi aesthetic, and a great little training ground for you to figure out the third-person shooting/hacking dichotomy before the boss.

So, enter the boss. It’s here the twin strands of Pragmata’s DNA form into a beautiful helix that shows off what the game is going for. As the walker slams about the platform and you dodge out of the way of missiles and AoE splashes on the floor, you need to use one of your three guns (it looks like there’ll be four in the final game) to inflict damage. There’s a pistol with a relatively low damage output and slow reload time that makes up for its shortcomings by having infinite ammo, a shotgun that has ridiculous damage-per-second but can only hold six shells at once, and a fun little stasis net that slows down your prey and does a little damage over time.

It’s a nice trio of arms. Swapping between them to maximise damage whilst minimising threat to yourself is the aim of the game, here, and it all ends up feeling a bit like a combat puzzle you solve on the fly as you strafe around the room. It’s not exactly Halo, but that’s where the Lost Planet reference earlier came from. Bosses like the walker have weak points (identified by Diana as you aim down sights), and in the case of this mechanical lump, it was a fuel tank on it’s back.

Once you’ve got the lay of the land, and you’ve identified where to ‘spend’ your limited shotgun shells, you pop out a stasis net, circle around the back, and get to work. I let out a horrible little laugh as everything came together in my preview – after slowing it down with the net, I unloaded a full clip of shotty shells into the tank whilst I used Diana to hack to the machine, immobilising it and spending some of her resources in order to lower its defence. The way it all mingles together under your fingers feels natural, like I’ve done this before. But, of course, I haven’t. Because this whole concept is completely batshit.

You shoot and aim with your standard trigger setup, then use the face buttons to solve a very easy puzzle and hack an enemy mid-fight (there’s the Watch Dogs nod). You can also jump and dodge, using the shoulder buttons, making your fingers hop across the whole pad in a glitchy, frantic little dance. It’s overwhelming, but in a flustering way that scratches the same part of my brain Vanquish did back in 2010. And once you’re au fait with the scheme, that desperate dance you do with hacking and shooting feels surprisingly natural.

Watching my footage back, I really don’t think what you see on screen does justice to Pragmata; it’s very much the sort of game that you need to feel in your hands in order to understand. I pray Capcom releases a demo (for its own sake), because the elevator pitch may be a little too obscure for some. It represents Capcom’s confidence, though, and hooks onto the same philosophy that Dead Rising did back in 2006: take a well-established genre, take it apart, and put it back together in a wholly new way.

There are still some anachronistic game design decisions in Pragmata (most of the story is told to you via text logs left scattered around the deserted moon base or projected holograms, very is still very 2006), but mixed in with these new ideas and genuinely fascinating combinations of genres. Pragmata is intriguing. I think games like this represent Capcom at its best: experimental, weird, and willing to break away from the triple-A pack in order to do something left-of-centre, a bit bizarre, a bit proggy. And ultimately, to arrive at something that’s all the better for it.

‘Wilder World’ Launches First-Person Shooter Game With $100K Tournament

Wilder World launched a high-intensity shooter game mode into “super early access” at the annual Gamescom conference on Wednesday.

The Ethereum-based project aims to create a broad metaverse of gaming experiences, which kick-started last year with the launch of the racing game Wilder Wheels in partnership with Lamborghini.

The PC-based shooter is a 10-player free-for-all deathmatch that blends first and third-person perspectives. Available on Epic Games Store, each match will last for 10 minutes, with players earning points as they battle in a fragment of Wiami—which is a 1:1 recreation of Miami, and the future foundation of its open-world metaverse. Gamescom attendees will also be able to claim Samsung-branded playable NFTs.

To celebrate the launch of the game, Wilder Worlds is hosting a $100,000 tournament with qualifiers running from August 25 to September 9, before a round of playoffs and finally an in-person final at an undisclosed location on September 24. The five players who qualify will be flown out to the final, all expenses paid.

Wilder World’s shooter game mode comes as the second release in its broader metaverse vision, which is targeting an early 2026 rollout.



Pseudonymous co-founder and Executive Producer n3o told Decrypt that the full game will include “racing, combat, resource mining, exploration, concerts, art galleries, and branded cultural experiences” that “coexist within a living, player-driven economy.”

“Launching individual modes first allows us to refine gameplay mechanics at a world-class level before bringing everything together into the open world,” they added.

The project launched an Ethereum token in 2021 and approximately six months later set its all-time high of $7.44, according to CoinGecko. Wilder World said that the launch of WILD was “foundational” to building the game, as it raised over $30 million to fund development. Over the past month, WILD has climbed 37% to about $0.40, but still remains down nearly 95% from its peak price.

“Think of [Wilder World] as the world’s first truly living digital city—where you can race, fight, build, trade, attend a concert, showcase your art, or launch your own brand.” n3o told Decrypt. “We are targeting early 2026 for the full open-world release, with Super Early Access modes like racing and FPS serving as the foundation that evolves into this broader vision.”
